A walk along and through the famous Lock 24 on the Lichfield canal, this amazing bit of industrial heritage has been altered to take a new route through. Join us as we explore the site and what will be done to take this long into the 21st century and help connect the Lichfield canal from Huddlesford on the Coventry up to the rest of the Birmingham Canal Network (BCN). We look at the work on the walls for the tow path and we take a further look at the new planning permission granted for the lift bridges, locks and restoration of another 650M of canal to Gallows Wharf and the St Johns and London Road Section.
We then jump from Gallows Wharf across to Fosseway Heath and explore the restoration as the new line joins the old from lock 18 and the abandoned railway and signal box with level crossing. Taking a look at the new Gabion walls built as well as the fantastic work done by the WRG groups, the Waterway Recovery Groups are a national band of legends who restore the canals across the country, taking on the big jobs that the trusts would take months to complete

Wow! The sheer landscaping alone will add so much beauty to the whole route of a once mighty canal. Ultimately this whole reclaimed part is bound to become a wonderful beauty spot again, as well as a refreshed wildlife habitat. Well done all involved! “ Power to the people!” ✊
Yep, all those tree lines, lines of hedgerow, lines of reeds and then the water, it’ll bring so much nature into Lichfield for the benefit of the people and the environment
I only walked this area a couple of weeks back and boy what you have shown here, a lot has been done. I know where I'm going after my Sunday roast today. I'm glad they get a lot of their building materials from Tippers Builders Merchants, a company for whom I work.
@@WarrenMandy check their Facebook this morning, they’ve got a really good pic from lock 18. Although if you are walking it maybe wait for the surprise! I’m going to have to make another visit soon myself as it’s changed so much. Apparently old lock 24 they’ve started to extend the gabion baskets on the other side as well
Top video (as always) on an exciting restoration project thank you !
Such a shame to see fields being lost to housing BUT every cloud has a silver lining and whilst the developers will no doubt be able to sell 'canalside homes' at a bigger profit, they are actually very much contributing to this restoration so ....
Well played every single person involved with the LHCRT restoration !
That whole side of Lichfield has been built on, it’s helped the canal loads and is a part of the reason it’s got so much happening but it is always a shame to see. The canal trust have worked very hard to get the projects paid for, they’ve got a good team
@@davidh8664 Thank you!
Amazing progress, I don’t live in the area but I find it a really interesting project.
There’s such a variety of jobs going on and moving so quickly, it keeps it very interesting
Thank you!
Yes I agree! I think any project that brings enthusiasts volunteers together in a like minded way is just lovely, and great for mental well being. Boredom and loneliness shortens many lives unnecessarily.
@@philtucker1224 you need a hobby when you retire, I’ve seen lots of fit and able people go downhill after retiring as they don’t get into something. Boredom is a killer
@@CourtAboveTheCut Totally bud, (there’s a lot of very shy lovely people out there that just don’t have the initial confidence to come out). It would really change their lives for the better 🙏
Thank's for a very informative update which gives a real insight into the challenges of this wonderful restoration project and how expertly they are being tackled. Truly impressive.
They seem to make use of every avenue that comes to them which is why it’s so quick!
Great video, thanks for all the updates.
No problem
Great vlog thanks for the update. They are making great progress, always loads happening 👍
It’s always super quick, I’ve got to keep driving up north to keep up 😂😂
@@CourtAboveTheCut they’re keeping you on your toes then 👍
@@paulturner7837 and long may that continue, I need the exercise 😂
Admiring the project from about as far away as you can get. Certainly some serious engineering work going on here.
Is there a best possible completion date for the whole canal to be in water?
I doubt even LHCRT can answer that. I think the initial aim will be to get the canal to where this video ends. The issue is it means locks and getting under a railway, the land is there so if they can work the magic they always do then I can personally see 10 years. Once boats are this far then it’s about securing land in the middle but the ball will be well and truly rolling and the benefits obvious so it’ll make it easier to push the agenda with the councils and funders
So maybe 20 for it to be a complete canal, at a guess
Nice update on this great project!
@@dennyporter2447 thanks
Right on my doorstep, I visited a few weeks ago …. Need to get up more, particularly since I just got a subscription…
Ah amazing you’ve signed up. They are always looking for volunteers as well
😍
@@CourtAboveTheCut I’ll have to think about that one, I travel south regularly with work … but I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
@@thoughtsonnarrowboatingwit3882 imagine cruising through in a few years, with some friends on board and you’ll have the ultimate bragging rights, I built that 😂
@@CourtAboveTheCut I can definitely say that about many places on the railway, including Market Harborough Station, ‘my station’. 😉
