So informative! Years ago, I worked at a wholesale florist and the designers would do the lights on the display trees exactly like this! Same rule of thumb: 100 per foot. Add more if needed. This jogged my memory. Thank you! I have a prelit tree that the bottom lights have stopped working on, (but I love), and I think that I can "fix" the problem now. 😊 Thank you, Joe!!
God Bless, you, Joe. Wrapping every branch...mama mia...I can't!! I want to...I can't !! LOL It does look so beautiful though when it is done propelry. You gave really good hints too. We have a pre-lit tree...ONE tree and I go bananas. At our last house, we stored the tree in the attic. The attic had pull down stairs. Guy hates spiders and I don't do attics or basements, so this was not a pleasant experience for either of us. Guy would sit at the edge of the opening with his legs dangling and then throw the crap down to me to catch. One year when we were putting everything away after the holiday, I had just handed over the bottom tier (one of four tiers) of the tree to Guy and it got caught on something before I could check out what the problem was he yanked it up and I heard "ping ping ping ping ping." There went all the lights on the lower branches of the side of the tree. Guy looked like the Grinch sucking everything up the chimney with his skinny legs hanging down. That was 10 years ago. We still have the tree, but there are no lights on the bottom on the right side. I don't even have the patience to put lights on those few branches, let alone an entire tree! Whew, I'm exhausted just writing about it. Anyhoo, can't wait to see the beauty you create this coming Christmas season! Xoxoxoxo
Lololol..I should come there to light that tree for you. Wellll one year I was putting the Christmas stuff in the attic and I was moving so fast my foot slid between an open beam and my leg fell through the ceiling. When I looked through the hole I saw I was hanging 19 feet above the floor in the foyer. I got instant diarrhea and almost didnt get out of that hole in time..ugh. I was sick for a week following that. Oh ps MaryAnn fell through the ceiling at her moms house one year putting things away too..uuuuggggh

Lol, no no a lot of people use this method! Especially in retail. Nowadays due to prelit people are losing the art of tree lighting, but if you look at any professionally decorated place the lighting design is usually this wrap method, 100 lights per foot of tree. Thanks for stopping by!

We in the U.K. certainly need advice on how to put Christmas tree lights on. We have different plugs here so not sure we can do it the same. Will give it a go. Thanks Joe. 😀🇬🇧🇺🇸xx
Hi, really? I wasnt aware of the difference in plugs. Make sure to read the box on how many end to end you can use, we dont want any mishaps. Stay safe.
Wow that is very informative thank you so much for sharing I am going to try it that way this year. LOL I normally go around the tree which is what you said not to do. I'm going to give it a try. Thank you.
Thank you Joe for the tutorial i shall be trying to put my lights on my tree this way, i have never been a fan of putting lights on my tree. It's always been so stressful doing it, so hopefully your way will be the easiest for me as i have osteoarthritis in my hands & hips. Which can be very painful standing & using my hands to put lights on the tree
So glad I came across your video! I am putting lights on our tree right now and have always wrapped them around and around but this time before I did that, I decided to look up tutorials. I’m so glad I did because I love the way you do it! I’m actually excited to do the lights for the first time ever! Really enjoyed your video and thorough explanation! Thank you so much! Subscribed!
@@LifeWithMaryAnnJoe when I was wrapping the lights around each branch, the wire seemed to flatten out the fluffiness, making the branches look more like sticks. Any advice? We have a Vickerman Flocked Alaskan Pine. Thanks so very much!
@@burky3490 hi. Sorry I was asleep I just saw your question. So possibly you pulled wire too tight on each branch, I mean you wrapped it too tightly. Possibly you put too many lights on each branch which would mean have very little space between the lights and it cause crushing. Maybe you a couple of branches with less tightening and less lights per branch area. Can you send me a picture? Send it too creativedesignsbyjoe@gmail.com
@@LifeWithMaryAnnJoe Oh ok great! I’ll give that a try! I’ll take a few pics and email you. I can’t thank you enough for everything! You’re truly amazing to go out of your way to help a stranger! The world could use more people like you! Thank you so much!
Hey brother I've watched 100's of how to UA-cams all to end up confused. your technique is perfection, it's simple to the point and easily viewed as in your video on exactly how you're wrapping those lights from end to end. thank you so much for an excellent tutorial. have a great Christmas from Texas 🙂🌨️☃️🎄🌲🌲
Wow I just found you two, I am putting my lights on our 7 foot tall white tree so far the top three feet are done and it looks fabulous. I always wondered how to do the lights it's simple but time consuming. Every brand back to front then back again keeping the wires tight then wrap counterclockwise. Thank you. After the lights what goes on next? Do you have a video about how to do the rest of tree? Thank you very much.
Next is the topper. Then If you put ornaments inside tree for a denser look they go next. Then I usually like to do the ribbon. Then comes picks ug you use them. Then larger ornaments, then smaller ornaments, then finishing off with more picks and ornaments to get it full.
I considered myself a Christmas tree pro but you stepped it up! I think I’m going to half to set up the tree in the middle of my room to do this and then move it lol. I’d better start now haha! By the way I made MaryAnn’s wings and Mac n cheese last night for dinner and it’s easily a new favorite for a cold day needing comfort food! Delicious!
Hey Suzi, glad you enjoyed the food! It is exactly what you said, nice and comforting on a chilly night. As for the tree..lol..take your time for sure, especially if trying out this technique..my back starts to ache like halfway in..mama mia.
🤷🏻♀️Ok , I’m that person who does it the first wrong way 😂😂😂😂 Thanks for the explaining & showing me after 46 years , how to do it the correct way . My hubby gave up when we started to buy trees already Lit ! I always feel there’s never enough Lights on them 😂 🥰🌲🎄🌲🎄🌲
Yes you're right..prelit us great but generally speaking lackluster in the number of lights But they do serve their purpose!! Bottom line is have fun no matter what, especially in this world we are living in right now.
Hi Joe! I will have to say your trees always come out beautiful and it does make a difference wrapping the branches like that... I wish I had your kind of patience..lol😁 I am a weave lights in and out on each branch girl just not as neat as yours. I wanted to tell you... I went to Big Lots with my mom today and she found one of those mimicking snowmen like MaryAnne has. She played with that thing through out the store and yes she bought it. I totally understand why you wanted to stuff that snowman with the others on the high ledge in your foyer😂😄 I feel your pain..lol. I have a feeling my moms will go missing before Christmas gets here!😂😁
Oh.. one more thing... I bought a bunch of led lights from Lowe's after christmas on deep clearance. If you ever decide to switch over go to the home improvement stores after christmas. They can link 7 strands together per 100 light strands and they don't get as hot. I still use both but the led are nice.
Thanks Joe for the tip. Question: whats the led wire length you used on this tree? I’m looking to buy led lights for 7.5ft Christmas tree. With your method I think it’ll need some more sets of led to decor the tree.
You made me laugh out loud when you threw the lights on at the beginning . Thank you so much for the tutorial this is going to help me this Christmas with all my trees. Please show how you add your ornaments so they fill in the spots and don't hang too low.
Joe, is it true that you should plug no more than three sets of lights into each other? If so, then I should use multiple extension cords.. Ha! I think you just answered my question.
Yes incandescent ( not LED) can usually only handle 3 sets of 100's end to end. Read the box for each companies guidelines. LED I think can handle up to 7 sets end to end....and yes extension cords up the trunk of the tree help handle the overload...thank you for stopping by!!
hi this is amazing but ive bought a tree with about 1200 tips and 1200 lights so im just wondering if a should miss a branch when putting the lights on?
I looked at many videos for tutorials (some w/1 million + views) and this one is by far the best. You actually show up close what you are doing, with the lights on, what not to do, and explain everything slowly & methodically. My question is, we have a 12 ft tree - do I have to wrap every single branch?? Because that would take a LONG time - there are tons of them! Or is there any way to skip a few or give some less coverage? If its best to cover every branch, I may just do this in stages, over time. Thank you for the amazing video & covering all bases!
This method would be so tedious for a 12 footer. .uch wider wrap per branch. Just keep stepping back to see if you're getting the look you want. Best wishes for your work.
Hi well originally I went to school to be a dentist but I started teaching Anatomy to nursing students and became an adjunct professor. That lead me to a teaching position in a high school where I taught Chemisrty, Biology, Anatomy and eventually mostly Honors Bio and Advanced Placement Biology...very different side of my artistic abilities.
OK I have a quick question.... When you say "wrap every branch".... Do you mean every MAIN LONG branch that comes out of the center or each individual little branch that comes off of each LONG BRANCH? 🤔 {lol did that make s sense? }.... Ooo ALSO, when I ordered my tree a couple of years all I knew was I wanted a BIG WHITE TREE! Well it came in and it was DEFINITELY a BIG WHITE TREE, however, the ONLY place I can put it is in this one corner.... Well it just stuck out soooo far, that I would literally get anxiety every time I had to go over into that area for something... So LAST YEAR, I decided to pull all of the branches FORWARD so the tree could be flat against the wall {plus it helped fill in the GAPS OR HOLES}... How exactly do you think I should do the lights for that type of tree?
Good idea, I do that too..that's why now I measure the circumference of the bottom of the tree and then draw it out on paper at home and talk around to see where it fits...its work but with it. Hmmm now fircyour lights I would do the long branches, if you do every small branch it will cause too much compression of the needles and you might wind up using way too many lights. I mean I've done it in the past, every single branch but it was overwelming and actually didnt need any ornaments!. Send me a picture to creativedesignsbyjoe@gmail.com
This is how I do my lights, too, but find it easier on an artificial tree where all the branches are sturdy and evenly spaced. This year I bought a real tree where there is more open spaces and not all the branches are sturdy enough to hold the weight of wrapped wires. How do I deal with these two issues? And, I have to add, nothing stresses me out more than hanging the Christmas lights!! 😩
Hi, well real trees are certainly a baffling situation for me too. I would say you're going to have to lay the lights on the branches they cant take all that work. I'm guess you shoukd look on UA-cam for a tutorial on real tree light placement. I never use real trees. I wouldn't be able to do what I normally do with one. Although they are beautiful. I may get one next year to experiment on. Sorry I couldn't help more.
Thank you for your quick response! I don't know what possessed me to buy a real tree this year when I have a perfectly fine artificial tree with the lights already on it. I guess I will just have to work through my stress and figure this out as I go. 😬 Thanks again!
I have a friend who just gave me a 9' tree but of course the lights don't work would you suggest that I take the time to search out for the Burnt bulb or just add new lights, having said that do I need to take off old lights before adding new ones?
Hi.welllll hmmmmmmm. It might be worth a chance to see if one or more are loose but that a tedious job....and frustrating. So the choice is yours, meaning that option, or you could take off the lights off tree, a scissor makes quick work of it..or you could leave them and put your lights over them..BUT I'll warn you that you will see those unlit bulbs and personally it drives me crazy. But do what is best for you! Whatever makes you happy. Let me know what you do!
I have one of these little devices but I find it difficult to use on the lights that are ccx attached to the tree. It's easier to use when the lights are not attached to the tree.
Great tutorial, Joe! Do you remember the big, HOT Christmas lights when we were kids? (Well, you might be too young). My mother said when I was about 3, I was sitting in front of the tree when the entire Christmas tree fell on top of me! My parents rushed over, just knowing I had been burned by the lights. Thankfully I was okay, but after that Daddy always wired the tree to the drapery rods!
I do remember those lights and thick wires..when I was young we transitioned those to outside..but yes its clear as a bell. How times and technology have changed our lighting options..
My Mom ALWAYS...my whole life...put up a BEAUTIFUL tree! A 6ft tree with 1000 colored lights and it was ALWAYS PERFECT! She passed last July and I wish I had watched her on how! Thanks Joseph for the great tips and the easy steps to follow. I learn a lot from you explanations and ready to apply them🙏🙏🙏
Great! So glad it helps somehow!!! Take care.
Yes tips are helpful. Thank you for sharing. Pat in NC
Hi Pat..thank you!!
Thank you! Great tutorial you explain very well.
Great video Joe!! You made me laugh 😂. You are definitely king of putting lights on the tree, well...Christmas too 😂. That tree looked gorgeous just like that 😁. Before I had a pre-lit tree, I would take great care in wrapping the lights like you do. Now my tree has three options of colored, white, or both. Hope you guys are having a nice Friday evening 👍🏻😉.
Prelit is gooood.saves all that cursing. Lol..I'm looking at a new 12 foot prelit LED..going to see if I have some extra pennies.

Great! Thank you for stopping by.
awesome tips! Going to do like you said section at a time so I can leave them on.
Great!!! Stay calm!
Thanks that’s brilliant. I always hate the wire runs showing. Can’t wait to try this!
Thank you, be patient! Its frustrating! Thank you very much and take care.
This makes me sooo happy thank you I really needed this video
Thanks so much. Yes I hear you I'm kind of out of it too.
CLEVER! I'm going to try it in a couple of weeks!
Great! Let me know how it goes!
Thank you.
Please practice on a small tree first, I dont want you cursing me out over this technique..lol..its not hard but its tedious! Let me know!!!!
Very informative video. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. Looking forward to watching your Christmas 2020 videos. God bless!
Thanks for watching. Greatly appreciated!!! Have a great evening.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I learned something new. I appreciate you, my friend. Enjoy your weekend and stay safe. ~Blessings 🕊🙏🏼🕊

Thank you! What a great bunch of tips. This is great! Hope you are doing well.
Thanks Diann, doing ok just stressed and anxious like the rest of the world during this tragic time. Be well and stay safe.
Oh please take care, it's not worth excessive pain.
Hi Joe! I love this hands on video. Good tutorial! Happy you are going to do more of these.
Have a great weekend 👍🎅🤶🌲
Thank you very much. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I hope to do more if these very soon!! Thank you again.
Subscribed!
Thank you! Thanks for subscribing too! I greatly appreciate it. Take your time with the lights dont get frustrated!
Send it too
creativedesignsbyjoe@gmail.com
@@LifeWithMaryAnnJoe Oh ok great! I’ll give that a try! I’ll take a few pics and email you. I can’t thank you enough for everything! You’re truly amazing to go out of your way to help a stranger! The world could use more people like you! Thank you so much!
I'll check my email for it!
Great! Glad to help!
Thank you for share you ideas

Joe I have waited sooooo long for this video from you thanks so much!!
Thata great, so glad you enjoyed it. Hope it's helpful!
Joe.. You are growing on me... lol. But every branch?? Not if you have a BIG tree. But I will definitely try your technique
Lol, yup every branch even on my big trees! Talk about back breaking!
Woww,i am new and i just subscribed.Amazing

This is the proper way to put lights on a tree. It’s painstaking but it beautiful.
🙋🏻♀️BTW my hubby watched the video and said , he used to do that 🤣
Before the lit tree 🤣🤣🤣🤣okkkkk, 🤣🤣🤣
Lol
🤷🏻♀️Ok , I’m that person who does it the first wrong way 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the explaining & showing me after 46 years , how to do it the correct way .
My hubby gave up when we started to buy trees already Lit ! I always feel there’s never enough
Lights on them 😂
🥰🌲🎄🌲🎄🌲
Yes you're right..prelit us great but generally speaking lackluster in the number of lights
But they do serve their purpose!!
Hahaha too funny..but so so true..MaryAnn just told me..She found more at BigLots..hope she doesnt think about creating a choir!!! Oh boy....lol
Yes I need to do that for sure! Thanks for the tip!!!!
@@LifeWithMaryAnnJoe a choir??🤣😂 To funny!
Thanks Joe for the tip. Question: whats the led wire length you used on this tree? I’m looking to buy led lights for 7.5ft Christmas tree. With your method I think it’ll need some more sets of led to decor the tree.
Hmmmm length of wire....I'm going to make a guess at ten feet or so. Hope that helps. Every manufacturer is slightly different.
You made me laugh out loud when you threw the lights on at the beginning . Thank you so much for the tutorial this is going to help me this Christmas with all my trees. Please show how you add your ornaments so they fill in the spots and don't hang too low.
Thanks, I will try to do that video for you.
Great video! I always have trouble hiding the wires. It's because I don't go to the back after I wire them. I seen my mistake and now I can fix it.
Great!!! Problem solved, how great is that?!!! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you this helped me out a lot
hi this is amazing but ive bought a tree with about 1200 tips and 1200 lights so im just wondering if a should miss a branch when putting the lights on?
Yes you can miss here and there but keep stepping back and squint to see if lights look distributed correctly.
Great information! I was just curious as to what you taught? I was a middle school history teacher and the last nine years I was a school counselor.
@@LifeWithMaryAnnJoe I thank we are lucky that we gifts tp pursuers we get older or can retire.
How would you add an accent light like a twinkle or a color ? Do you add them on the same branch that your white lights are on?
Yes an accent color does share some of the same branches. Hmmm I think I should do a tutorial on that.
I'd love that!!!
I try to change the fuse if not and it's not a visible light I use wire cutters it's a lot easier .
Yes!
Google LIGHTKEEPER PRO.
I have one of these little devices but I find it difficult to use on the lights that are ccx attached to the tree. It's easier to use when the lights are not attached to the tree.
thankyou
Thanks so much for the video😁
You're welcome, but thank you for stopping by!
I think you could see that tree from space!!! Wow that's a lot of lights on a tiny tree 😂
Lol..professional lighting scheme is 100 per foot..it is alot but appears even more on the video.
Can you do warm lites on ctree?
Hi. These were warm lights, it's just that they look so bright on the video.
Nice thank you.
Thank you!
