  • OPEN ME!: Welcome to a new vlog! In today's vlog I talk about one of the things that came up in the comments of a recent video, the idea of a mid-life crisis or a mid-40s identity crisis. I had some thoughts on this, particularly on whether we should think of this as a "crisis" or as something different, and perhaps more positive. I'm fascinated by the idea of how our identity changes as we get older and wanted to talk about that more. I also talk about some changes I'm making to my online identity. It's the end of an era for sure over on Instagram. Plus there's a strip to the hair salon (I'm a redhead now!) and Whole Foods. I hope you enjoy! :) xx

I've been seeking more content from women in their 40s as a 40 year old myself. The algorithm blessed my feed with your videos, the fact that you're also a writer is just the icing on the cake ❤😊

I literally just saved a video to my "watch later" of Paul Chitlik about starting a new creative life after age 40. I feel like that is exactly what I'm living now, having finally decided to start focusing on writing at the age of 42. That video is going to be my reward today for getting all my responsibilities handled. This life in your 40s subject seems to be a real thing and I'm totally here for it. For so long I've felt alone and like maybe I'm weird and the only one going through such a shift right now.
BTW, midlife shift is a MUCH better way to term it. It might feel like a crisis sometimes but it doesn't always. Shift is a much better word for it.
Me realizing right now how close this book is to release and how soon I'm going to be able to get my hands on it. Yes!! So excited. I've mentioned before I'd buy it without a cover on it but you've talked about the cover so much now I totally want to see. haha
Loving the red hair. Also, the ex-photographer in me is not curious about Instagram. I haven't picked up a camera in years though so I don't know if I would set up an account. I imagine there are a lot of photographers who post their stuff though. I hope so at least. I may need to check it out. So you're account over there that you kept is just your name, right?

It’s not often that it’s said out loud that it’s ok to change our identity. That it’s normal. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability and honest experience.
    LOVE your hair. So fun.
By the time you posted this so many people have died. The careers they all have shared with the world is astounding. ❤

I am so happy to have found your channel as a 26 year old who is a little lost right now after deciding to leave the path of academia. It is nice to know that it’s okay to not have it all figured out right now or even later on in my life - I love the idea of an identity shift rather than the negatively framed identity “crises”

I think your other video was so popular because it’s so relatable. It’s hard to find channels that aren’t the stereotypical 20s people that we see everywhere. You’re giving voice to success as a woman who *gasp* gets older and enjoys life *gasp* as an older woman. There is no age we don’t feel vulnerable. And it’s fruitless to struggle against it. LOVE the hair. I got my hair colored and highlighted for the first time at age 45. It was so fun! Favorite Maggie Smith is Sister Act. 🔥

I’ve been super emotional and wobbly recently and everyone is telling me that it’s down to my identity shifting. I know I’m only 24, but since going freelance I feel like so much has changed! it’s a jarring feeling, and surprising, as I never felt this big of a shift after graduation or what not. there’s definitely a big lost feeling but I know I just need to keep pushing through.

🔥Hi, the new hair color looks good on you! As far as identity goes, I know I am not exactly who I was ten years ago, or even a year ago. I think a lot of people are constantly changing, and that can be a good thing. I do find the older I've gotten the more caring I am, yet the less I care about what others think of me. Which I don't think is bad. I've heard the same from others, the older you get the less you care what people think of you. Which is great because that helps you be more authentically you.

A few observations: 1. The nature walk narration was almost Bob Ross in its soothing nature. Divine. 2. Being a grad student is tough because it is a really enjoyable gig, but it can't go on forever. I still have happy memories of the ratty couch that we had in the grad student office. 3. It would be hilarious if your real persona was completely different than your online personal. That would be quality performance art. 4. Nice hair-do!

I love your red hair. 🔥 It's stunning! I've been realizing recently that I'm in the midst of an identity shift in regards to parenting. I have daughters who are 19 and 16, and I now have to figure out what it means to parent adult/almost adult children. It's different, and it seems like it's not talked about as much as being a new parent and the other childhood stages.

I think you are really brave to do what you do and put these videos out because I don't think I could do that because I am very much a private person and my life is not something I want to share with millions of people over the internet but you put out the highs and the lows of your life which I think is very courageous

My favorite Maggie Smith was A Room with a View, but my very first was The Secret Garden. Loved her subtle sass.

🔥 Really LOVE the red hair, Andrea! I feel like I should call you Aundrea lol - The ginger is giving me squirrel fur vibes :) I've always wanted to go red but one of the reasons I don't is because it fades so quickly. But yours looks amazing so maybe I might give it a go.
I like the term 'identity shifts' instead of 'identity crisis', and I think it's important to take stock of your life every decade not to be critical of what you haven't achieved but to be grateful of how much you've accomplished and how far you've come.
When I was in my 20s someone told me that when I get to 40 I won't care what people think and I thought it was hogwash. Then I turned 40 and the switch was automatic and I laughed to myself; they were right.
I still haven't gotten over Angela Lansbury's passing so Maggie Smith's broke me. The Dowager Countess made Downton Abbey for me. Every line she delivered was so iconic with that deadpan stare lol. R.I.P. Miss Smith, you'll forever be a legend in my heart.

I can really relate to you on so many levels. We are almost the same age, I felt very similarly finishing my phd, and even have similar hair color (now). I want to thank you for sharing and being real! I also am experiencing an identity shift, and it’s more of a merge than a 180. It’s not easy, but knowing there others out there helps!
