- UA-cam is not telling you the WHOLE TRUTH about COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act). And the consequences are disastrous … FTC fines of $42,530 per video, video de-publication, and worse … LOSS of YOUR CHANNEL. In today’s video, I take you through an in-depth history of COPPA, UA-cam & the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), including when the FTC fines UA-cam. I tell you what you can expect from COPPA & UA-cam as of January 1, 2020. I also breakdown the NEW COPPA UA-cam rules and give you a COPPA UA-cam update. As you may already know, if you get a UA-cam COPPA violation, you could lose your channel. So, you’ve got to practice solid UA-cam COPPA compliance. Messing with UA-cam COPPA FTC is no joke. You’re probably going to need legal representation if you suffer a UA-cam FTC fine. That’s what I am here for -- to give you guidance on how to comply with UA-cam COPPA law. Thanks for watching.

Dear parents,
We are not your childrens' babysitters so get UA-cam Kids and stop putting people out of business.
Signed,a lot of people
I assure you that the parents could never watch over their children to prevent the type of data that is being taken from them. One digital marketer said “if most people understood how much data they lose every day, or could physically see it being taken, it would cause widespread outrage.” What the FTC is trying to do is- in theory- not a bad thing. But the heavy handed response and UA-cam's apparent "self-destruct" response is extremely concerning. I'm not really sure how a lot of UA-cam creators are supposed to continue. 😢
Imagine if we owned our data and was allowed even a small slither of the revenue from that pie. Wow, we’d all be rich. Data is the new currency. These big companies just do want the masses to know. They are mining it from us like liquid gold, but we get no cut 🤷🏻♂️.
@Random Gaming Well, that is not the dark side. That's the bright side!
"...a lot of people"
Thats an understatement
Not really fair to blame all parents because some are actually shitty parents
I think *UA-cam* is being rather ridiculous and going overboard with this whole erasing comments mess.
Like for instance deleting comments on a video just because some random little kid walked by the camera; and was never seen again while their parent was filming and talking about some thing else, and doing it to kids cartoons such as *Arthur* and the *The Chipmunks* .
I just wish that it would go back to the way it was before. : /

nah just don't give them access
The same thing goes for adults. We don't need the government protecting us all the time that's our responsibility.
If I understand it correctly the government is going after creators for UA-cam collecting kids' data while the parents do nothing.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. This wouldn't be an issue if kids followed the rules and didn't make accounts of they're not 13. And this wouldn't happen if parents actually cared about what their kids do online.
The problem is that the current parents didn't grow up with the internet so many of them aren't fully aware of these rules, but that still isn't an excuse.
Can someone tell me how this is not a 1st amendment violation from the FTC.

@Smurfette Did It then shouldn't it be Google being punished and not the content creators? If they are so easily able to tell when a child is watching UA-cam then couldn't they just turn personalized ads of for those viewers?

So let me get this straight: I want my kids to be able to watch safe, child friendly content online. Content requires money to the people who make content, otherwise they will have no time because they need to have a job elsewhere. Result: Nobody is going to make child friendly content as a job, and 80% of kids who watch UA-cam on a regular basis is just going to, what, settle for the narrowest selection of content made by volunteers on their day off? No! They're going to go watch inappropriate content with personalized ads targeted at them in a few years. Which is like a million times worse than watching child friendly content with ads targeted at them now.
And what even are adult targeted ads anyway? Shaving cream? Dildos? Because I guarantee that 90% of ads out there includes products that can both be enjoyed by children and adults. You think a 12 year old is not interested in that new brand of milk? They're not interested in action/romance movies?

Completely agreed. Parents need to be more proactive with what their kids watch, and UA-cam needs to work with their creators more than they have. I'm not a creator, but I worry about the creators I do watch and enjoy. My sub list could get a lot shorter, and I'm not happy about it. UA-cam was supposed to be a safe place for creators to post video content for their viewers. Their rules are such a grey area, and everything is blurred as to what is kid friendly, and what isn't. I don't think any platform is safe from the FTC, unless they hold to strict guidelines and help their content creators not to get sued by the FTC.
So either make Kid Friendly content and make no money, or make non-Kid Friendly content and be demonetized... and make no money. Ok. Got it.

Sounds like a Narcissist's Abusive Lose/Lose trap where they can just beat you no matter what you say to them. The FTC must be going against the constitution by going after free speech, right? Aren't they also making excessive fines which is also against one of the ammendments?
Phantom of the Gab the fine could possibly be identified as cruel & unusual punishment/inappropriate punishment . However, you think you’re going to win against their lawyer & them being able to format damages done to kids to equal out to 42k ?
@@problemsnearyou3863 the damage done is caused by the blanket collection of data that google does, not by content creators. I am fairly certain that holding content creators responsible at all doesn't have a leg to stand on, and that if they stopped the blanket collection of personal identifiable information across the board, they wouldn't have so much trouble or risk being unconstitutional.
Thomas Stewart well overall I don’t think any of this falls on the content creators . UA-cam didn’t make it clear to people who create content what does & doesn’t fall in line if they’re going to be given targeted ads via partnership . But also the FTC is making the rules here in terms of what is & isn’t acceptable & them being the government complicates things greatly in terms of content creators being able to properly defend themselves . So yeah UA-cam paid the fines, but in my opinion, content creators shouldn’t have to suffer over something their provider never made clear to them

*I left this comment on the petition:*
My 6th child is recently learning her ABC's and other preschool related subjects. This change has inhibited me from making playlists of each subject (examples: One letter of the alphabet, Sign Language, or potty training songs) that HELP me to EDUCATE my child. I am not able to do this with UA-cam Kids. If these channels made for my child can no longer make revenue for their hard work, then SO MANY CHILDREN will lose the ability to learn in fun ways! :( Personalized ads (for toys, games, etc.) towards MY child (who has MY permission to watch content on MY channel) is MUCH BETTER than the MATURE ads that I'd prefer her NOT to see. This "protection act" is NOT protecting my child. I'm having to protect my child from the unpersonalized MATURE ads that are now being exposed to her as a result of this change! I feel stripped of my right to parent my own child. Let me (the actual parent) determine what I let MY child watch. I hope you receive this well.
I have a simple solution. First, we each have a conscience, and therefore, how would you act around children while the parents are around; especially when you don't know the parents? Use that as your measuring stick. Second, read a couple children's books that is geared towards children thirteen and under, then one or two that are geared toward teens above thirteen, and you can use that as a measuring stick as well. Third, watch a children's movie from back in the 1990's or earlier that has a "G" rating, another with a "PG" rating, another with a "PG-13" rating, and finally one with an "R" rating. (I suggest the last bit there because stuff back then was a little more safe for children for a "PG" or under rating than it is now most of the time. My own mother cannot believe what they now think is suitable for children these days and allow and air on CTNW and Nick. As she said, and I quote her on this, "They would have never of allowed that or showed that in my day as for children." And she said that while the show was airing around just the time when children were getting out of school.) Anyway, while doing that, look up all such ratings mentioned, and also learn of how they decide what is suitable for children and not. Fourth, all movies and television series that are not suitable for children on television, start with the proper warnings; like for example, "Parental Advisory Warning: The subject matter may not be suitable for children under 'such and such' an age." Basically this throws it back into the hands of the parents, forcing them to take responsibility, as it should be; and the content creator of whatever platform, whether it would be for simply buying a DVD with an "R" rating or watching it on television, no longer worries about it. We as content creators here on UA-cam can do nearly the same thing. When all research is complete, you can begin to put a warning label at the beginning of your videos.
For my channel, of which I just started back in November, I came up with a Color Coding System as soon as I heard about this whole ordeal with UA-cam, the FTC and the COPPA Act about a week ago. I don't really see at it as a means to try and get rid of freedom of speech and the like. I do think, however, that people have forgotten what morals are, and they think that everything is just relative. But also in saying all of this, there is a balance that needs to be stuck. If they hit UA-cam for targeting children with ads, then CTNW and Nick need to be hit with it well, and any other station or platform that has ads that are targeting children under thirteen whatsoever. And then, let's find out how fast the FTC and the Government get sued, because those companies are not able to market there products properly. McDonalds and BK need to be hit with it as well, because they have ads that are directed at children. And ect... There needs to be a balance where everyone can get along as a nice big happy family, and everyone still makes a little revenue. Point blank, period... If content creators don't start being responsible, then acts like this from the FTC and the Government will always feel like it's taking away people's rights. The lesson to be learned here is, don't make them take action and there won't be any problems.
Same answer as I gave previously!! 😲

If a child lies about their age to get onto UA-cam, then I don’t see how anything of what they are implementing will make a difference?
It won't.
Because this law is about harvesting their data intentionally and not doing anything to prevent accidental data collection to target things at them.
Google can now reassure the FTC that some measures are in place to reduce the risk of this happening.
It's only the sensible thing to do.
Children can bypass this if they want, but it won't be Google's fault then, or at least reduce their part.

Is this going to be retroactive? You'll have to label newly posted videos, or you'll have to go through old ones and label them as well?

TOTALLY agree -- animation does not = kids content
Animations with blood as well

Dude under these fucking furry porn could be considered kids content. This is so fucking stupid.

If kids show up the same issue applies, it doesn't matter what you say you're doing if you're gathering information from children. This means it once again appears UA-cam has lied.
