Did the trip from Kyoto to Himeji and back as a day trip last November. The grounds are so big. We did 2 stories in the castle, but the angles going up and down the stairs are just crazy. Plus being about 6 ft (180 cm) tall was not easy as well. Also the castle has the windows open, so it was brisk to say the least.

OMG such a shame things were closed up! Honestly though unless you are into woodwork and historical architecture there's not a lot to see in the castle keep. All the floors are empty except the top one that has a small shrine. It's something you do for the sake of being there, and to get a good stairmaster workout! ☺

Yes! we were unlikely with that unfortunately! It's good to know that perhaps we didnt actually miss too much though going by what you say! We definitely didn't need another work out after the amount of walking we did haha :)

Really bad luck. I hate to say this but you guys seemed to have missed the Koko-en Gardens just a few hundred meters from Himeji Castle. The ticket price for Himeji should include those gardens. They are absolutely gorgeous and I would rank my experience there on par with, if not better than, Himeji Castle (and I was inside the castle too).

Ahh no way! We’re gutted. It gives us an excuse to come back and visit again! 😍
