From someone who has spent many Christmases deployed at sea: thank you. This brought a tear to my eye. This is my first Christmas home in 8 years and this sums the feeling up perfectly.
I spent 1 holiday season on the Bataan and I thought it sucked but then I realized there were those like you that spend their entire enlistments at sea and I realized how easy I had it. I couldn't fathom spending 2 plus enlistments at sea.
Right after listening to the 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman' cover from Geoff Castellucci, the first thing that came to my mind was: "I wonder when Colm's gonna do his part of Christmas singing..." Thank God I didn't have to wait much ❤
I am a born and bred Scotsman yet this is all so familiar to me. Similar songs but also a a familiar love for history and where you come from that follows the song. I love every song you have covered and can easily say that I will continue to do so.
I feel like many folk songs and traditions have been lost over the centuries. Both Gaelic in the case of Irish and Scots and Germanic in the case of us further down the island. I think people should actively try and at least preserve these traditions as the history is both interesting and complex. And having a distinctively homegrown culture during the holidays is nice I think.
The Scots ARE Irishmen- technically speaking. You're our irritable cousins who got tired of our bullshit and cried, "Fuck it! We'll go see what's on that other Island over yonder! Can't be any worse than here."
@@leolake1475 Pretty much, yeah. It’s very sing-songy, just on its own. And it being so divorced from both Germanic and Romance languages gives it an air of mystery and ancientness.
Tingles from head to toes hearing that chorus makes me wish I could travel back home to Ireland do the ole pub hopping hear the shantys with the boys again. It has been nearly 2 decades already holy hell I need to get back.
I could listen to this any time of the year, not just around Christmas I love songs like this; I can just imagine being on a Viking longboat Merry Christmas 🌲
Practically had this on loop as it came out. :) Another sterling piece. Somehow manages to combine feel-good vibes with hardworking shanty vibes, haha--I guess that's the Christmas influence? Regardless, thank you, Cap'n! Merry Christmas to all the Colmpany, and God bless us, every one!
If there was more Christmas music like this instead of the shopping mall fluff that pollutes the air everywhere I go, I wouldn't be such a cantankerous orc this time of the year. Thanks for the breath of fresh air, Colm.
It's simply amazing how you put so much work into these pieces of art for us. It's a journy to different lands everytime a new cover gets out. I so regret not having been able to be there for the premiere
I just want you to know, I’ve been dealing with panic attacks and anxiety to the point where I feel I’m having a heart attack. But your music and videos are so soothing, they have helped me though my pain! I love you and my wife says thank you!
Blast! Now I'm drenched from head 't foote. I should know better than 't lean over bow when we're at full sail! But we make for safe harbor an' I long for Christmas by me own hearth. Thank 'e for the rallying song to lift our spirits.
This song needs more love!!! It is the only Christmas song I listen to all year round, but even better than that it just brings me endless joy to listen to! Thanks Colm💙
My mom officially knows you as “Sailor boy”. I was listening to you in the car Mom: *Excited child voice* is that sailor boy?! Me: yes…? Mom: Put him on the car speaker I wanna hear!!! I got her just as hooked as me 🤣🤣🤣
You’re getting better and better and you were already great. This is beautiful! Keep growing, keep making music. This song is so Irish I feel the Atlantic wind on my face all the way out in California.
God Rest Our Merry Colmpany, let nothing you dismay Another premiere's come and gone, still the piper comes to play Another song to cheer our hearts and keep the dark at bay O tidings of jumpers, tea, and joy - boy oh boy O tidings of jumpers, tea, and joy
You know there is beauty in all music if you are willing to look far enough, but something about Irish music just smacks you in the face with it lol you continue to prove once again why you are my favorite artist, I appreciate that you and many others are bringing this music to life again It seemed to be hard to find as if forgotten to the modern world until recently. Thank you
Another masterpiece, it's beautiful. Since I found the first of your songs around 9 months ago, I listened to all of them. Some of them became my Top songs overall. I wish you a merry Christmas
As someone who absolutely LOVES Christmas, I think this is a beautiful tune. While I’ve never had to spend Christmas at Sea, I can still appreciate the great way you convey the emotion of the song. Well done, Colm ❤👍
Absolutely wonderful in every possible regard. This was the perfect solution to my Christmas blues. After all, is é ceol na Nollaig na hÉireann an ceol Nollaig is fearr. GRMMA, Colm!
Oh my word. So many emotions from this song. I love this. The way it's sung, the way it's arranged, even just the expressions on your face. I can FEEL these sailors. I can feel their exhaustion for this life that they may love, but the pure joy with the very notion that they'll be home for Christmas. I can feel that pining in my very core. Well done, sir. You've earned a new subscriber.
Now we just need someone to post the lyrics in the comments section, but with how to pronounce all the Gaelic parts. I really want to learn this song and sing it properly for my grandma when it's Christmas time.
I like your originals better than most of your covers. You bring a modern sense of catchiness that’s so awesome. You can really see you’ve taken the idea of old school shanties and turned it into something more. Love this song!
It's easy to just listen to music but this song screams meaning. Men who have been out at sea for ages are finally coming home to see their families on the most important day of the year.
We have to quarantine unexpectedly until Friday and the shield maiden and I danced around the house to this quite a few times! Lightened and livened up our day! Thank you 💚✨
I am consistently mystified by the way Irish and Gaelic sound. It's really gorgeous, written or spoken. As an American, I can't help but wonder what the average Irish person's familiarity is with it? Regardless, this is beautiful music, a beautiful voice, a beautiful video. Thank you, Colm
Brain: Hey Em, is there a reason you aren't getting any school done? Heart: This 😶😶😶😶😶😶😶😶 How have I lived my life without this???? How have I made it this far??
I just absolutely love your original songs. I listen to this and it sounds so cozy and warm. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! It definitely hits the nostalgia for me for listening to Celtic Christmas music with my mother as a child, but beyond that I'm sure I'll be listening to this well after Christmas.

LYRICS (with translations)
Éist anois (Listen now), sons and daughters
I’ve been out on these waters
And it’s been quite some time
Since we’ve hit solid ground
But I’ll give yis’ a song
For it might still be long
‘fore we all reach the port
So let this one resound
So come on lads row
Let’s haul her on home
And we’ve still far to go
While we’re freezin’ and swearin’
‘Cause there’s nothing here for us
So we’ll head for home agus
Ba mhaith linn an Nollaig
A chaitheamh in Éirinn
(And we want to spend Christmas in Ireland)
Go n-éirí an farraige leat
(May the sea rise up to meet you)
Toisc go bhfuil muid I bhfad ó bhaile
(Because we are far from home)
Is olc an ghaoth nach séideann do dhuine éigin
(It is a bad wind that does not blow)
Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin
(There's no fireplace like your own fireplace)
Ní huasal ná íseal, ach thuas seal is thíos seal
(Neither noble nor lowly, but up for a while and down for a while - [in other words]: no matter your status, you'll always have ups and downs)
Táimid beagnach ann
(We’re almost there)
So come on lads row
Let’s haul her on home
And we’ve still far to go
While we’re freezin’ and swearin’
‘Cause there’s nothing here for us
So we’ll head for home agus
Ba mhaith linn an Nollaig
A chaitheamh in Éirinn
And we’ve still far to go
While we’re freezin’ and swearin’
‘Cause there’s nothing here for us

Thank you for the sacrifice!
I hope you enjoyed your family time at home. And thank you!

I say Hooah
Thank you for your service! I've got a little over a year in college left before I head out to do my time.
It's Irish.
It's Christmas.
It's a Shanty.
It's sung by the Lord of Song himself.
What the heck's not to like?
I really wasn’t feeling the Christmas spirit this year but this song was an instant fix! Simply magic! Definitely a favorite
Even in the dark may music help those in need.
I wish i could say the same
Same
Mandolins, violin, penny whistle…
So very very Irish. I love it.
Right after listening to the 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman' cover from Geoff Castellucci, the first thing that came to my mind was: "I wonder when Colm's gonna do his part of Christmas singing..."
Thank God I didn't have to wait much ❤
Right?!? Geoff & now Colm, and Dan Vasc should have his video up soon too. So many great Christmas songs this year!
What I wouldn't give for a Colm and Geoff collab.
I remember watching it premiere, it was awesome…
Just imagined how this could be in a Ireland tourism ad video for the Christmas Season. Wonderful piece and keep it up!
I am a born and bred Scotsman yet this is all so familiar to me. Similar songs but also a a familiar love for history and where you come from that follows the song. I love every song you have covered and can easily say that I will continue to do so.
I am English and feel the same way. Enjoy your Christmas my friend.

To spend Christmas at home is most beautiful of all.
Incredible as always! Anyone else think an album's worth of upbeat, holiday shanties just like this would be absolutely amazing?!

Magical and spiritually uplifting. Pure passionate Irish energy 💚🤍🧡
You make me smile and bring me home to Ireland’s shore even on the coldest winter days. Thank you Colm for my love of Erin’s green shores.
Can't wait!
The harmonies and melody sounds so nostalgic for some reason, the lightness of the music, its beautiful
Something to dance while at work!!! woohoo!
Love it!!! I love Folk Songs and Shanties....always full of heart and adventure.

Merry Christmas 🌲
I love how uplifting this is! I really like how the Irish and English lyrics flow into one another. That counter-melody line is 👌
Literally bright me to instant tears.
Thank you.
A thousand times my gratitude to you.
Thank you.
I listened to this song while walking through my town full of Christmas fun and attractions ... I literally felt like in a fairy tale

After 40 odd years of generic Christmas music, this kind is a WELCOME change of pace. Thank you.
