  • How to change the gearcase oil or "lower unit fluid" on your outboard motor. This is the same on just about every outboard motor ever made, from 4hp to 350hp.

Thanks for sharing I'm trying to be more handy and learn how to do some of these things to save money. I change the top oil. Watching your video now I have enough confidence to change the bottom I bought Quicksilver SAE 90 for my 25hp 4 stroke mercury. Is there a big difference between the squirt bottle and the pump type?

In your description it says this is about the same for every outboard from 4hp to 350hp. I have recently acquired a 2.5 hp Johnson and a 3.5 hp Nissan. Is there a different procedure for smaller outboards?

When and why would you use this as opposed to 90 weight gear lube with a pump?

my Mercury/Force engine has three plugs: VENT, FILL, DRAIN. I am removing the VENT first, then the DRAIN, get the old oil out, install the DRAIN plug back, then use the FILL hole to refill the gearcase, then install the FILL plug back once some fluid that comes out indicates that we have filled the assembly with oil, and the last plug to install is the VENT plug. Maybe other motors have a different procedure

Is it the same oil for a 3.3 hp motor?

Great video! Two questions: 1) I have a 4Hp Tohatsu that stops after a couple of minutes drive. The propeller is not spinning freely and easy like the one in the video, mine has some resistance. Could it be because of the old gear lube? It has not been changed in my time (5 years, maybe it's 8-10 years old).
    2) Do I need a pump to get the new oil in, or is it just as ok with the tube he used first in the video?

Yes I would buy gear oil and the pump for it

I changed the gear oil. Same trouble, it stopped after a minute all the time. I then took the carburator apart, and found a tiny piece of plastic (probably from a rope) inside a nozzle. I picked that out and assembeled the carburator again, and now the motor goes like a dream :)

do you run the engine to get everything hot before you drain it ?

Is there a reason as to why you fill from the bottom and not the top ?

Ryan Pearce to make sure all air is pushed out the top. If you fill from top air pockets can form
