Also on the note of the product you used to like but don't anymore - beyond just tastes changing, often it's because our skin and faces are literally changing as we get older! Sometimes your holy grail foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, etc. simply won't work for you anymore, and it can be hard for us to want to accept that and move on because it's a reminder that we're aging. Accepting that you've grown out of a product like that can be really healing.
Yes! I'd love to see a video discussing how to find your own personal makeup style. I'm in the process of revamping mine and would love to hear your take on the subject!
I’ve already done some major decluttering. I’m done with liquid and powder blushes. I’ve fallen in love with the Danessa Myricks Balm Formula. I bought three full size and two minis. One mini is a red by the way. These are all I want and need. I decluttered all medium to full coverage foundations. I just want light coverage. I decluttered so many lipsticks. I wanted tinted balms and tinted oils. I decluttered all waterproof mascaras. I have naturally long curly lashes and I don’t want to struggle to remove mascara. I decluttered all hard or not creamy eye pencils. I decluttered all of those glowy primer products. Most important, I decluttered all hair color products. I’m letting my silver hair grow out. This last declutter has been hugely liberating and self affirming. I don’t want to stress about roots and hair damage.
I really needed this wake up call. I realize that much of my purchases are "in hopes" that it works for me and I'm often underwhelmed despite the rave reviews. I need to buy things that suit ME!
Omg this video has been so incredibly helpful. I have a bunch of powder blush and cream blush that I just don’t like and have kept because I feel almost a weird guilt for having spent money on it. This video really has put it into perspective that I don’t have to punish myself by keeping them to remind myself to be a better consumer. I have already learned that lesson, I don’t need to keep punishing myself for it.
18:30 I think one point of concern is for those with difficult skin tones or undertones. I have light-to-medium cool olive skin, my best match probably be something neutral (grey, but if I had to choose then maybe leaning slightly pink instead of yellow) if I can’t find something specifically for cool olive. I’ve kinda accepted that it’s hard to get a good match and all makeup products go orange on my face after an hour or more so it’s been tough, but I can make it work somewhat by adding green and lavender corrector whenever I use foundation. I’ve made some bad calls on foundation lately and I have 5 different base products that are poor matches so I’m just using these up until I can justify another purchase and can confidently pick a proper match. No one else I know can take the shades that I don’t want but it’s wasteful to throw them out. I also want to gauge how long it takes me to actually run out of a product since it has been a long time since I finished a bottle of foundation.
And I guess there is more value to be learned from keeping these products that I don’t like. I don’t use them consistently enough to evaluate every aspect of performance and usage before I decide to take another plunge. The colour match really bothers me because of how grey and prone to oxidisation my face is, but there are a few different formulas and types of product that I have on hand and it’s a good time to test and reflect on what my workhorse product should be like. Do I like cushion foundations? Skin tints that I can apply with my hand? Do I prefer applying with brushes or sponges? Just concealer blended out? What about powder products? How was my skin condition after using this product almost every day? (The maybelline lumi matte is kinda pretty but it oxidises and is tough on my skin so I can only use it every other day at best) Basically, before getting rid of something it might be good to become very clear about your thoughts on it so it can lead you to better decisions in the future. It’s good to develop more mindfulness about how you feel about these products you spent money on. For those of us who just aren’t quite aware of these things yet, it’s a great exercise to form coherent thoughts about how these products suit their face, their lifestyle, their weather, the different situations they deal with. Like, I almost felt upset with my Tower 28 concealer after getting my Natasha Denona one since I preferred the coverage of the latter. But hey, if I’m not wearing foundation that day then Tower 28 is wonderful and quite forgiving on my skin while ND can be awkwardly high coverage if I’m not careful. Maybe taking a page from the Alexis and Christine (the Lipstick Lesbians), you can check if there are any stand out products that have special ingredients in them that you want avoid or look for more of.
I guess I just want to say that there’s so much that goes into a product, and so many factors going on in our lives and our relationship with makeup that it would be a shame to treat it like single-use plastic. I have made purchases that don’t work out the way I intended but found new life replacing a product category I never bothered to invest in. Like, without intending to do so I have something I can use as a liquid highlighter, foundation and powders I can use as bronzers, correctors and lip products I can use to try shades that I am scared to purchase as blushes or eyeshadow. If you are unsatisfied with your collection, you might find some hidden gems in products that can be repurposed. You might even get more insights about your preferences for those makeup categories you don’t have dedicated products for.
Maybe it’s just me but I think I need to unlearn the impatience to get the best thing right now. I won’t deny I have impulse issues but I just feel like forcing this slow pace to make the most of what I have by refusing to buy much more is a more constructive way to approach makeup. I like the way it fosters creativity and experimentation instead of fuelling this insatiable desire for more and better. Like maybe it’s not the product that’s the problem and it’s not my face that is ugly but I have yet to settle on the best application method for me and my face? I don’t see a lot of influencers with features or preferences like mine so maybe there is a mismatch with what I want? Like, just the other day my hand derped because I was kinda out of it and I accidentally made the best wing liner I’ve ever seen on my face. Happy accidents are part of learning! It’s a funny story to tell about my makeup journey! Messing around and finding out is a blast and it made me miss those breakthroughs I had back when I drew on paper. I keep wanting to pick up my pencil again (but right now getting a face ready for the day is the only time I give myself for something creative) And get this, I have always avoided colour in my attempts at art. I was just never good at making sense of it but between Kakie, Alexandra Anele, and my own antics I am starting to feel a call to try using colour in art. And I can have conversations with my sister and mom about makeup too! We all have different skin depths and undertones so it’s been fun seeing how differently colours work on each of us. My sister has a fine arts degree but she was never into makeup and wanted to try out recently since she could start working soon and she’s found that her face is a completely different canvas than what she’s used to! She has fumbled with some colour choices and we’re aghast that I, the one that loves yellow, pink, and cyan am cool toned and grey, while she, who loves purples and navies and silvers has a bright and rosy-to-peach undertone. And I love any chance to do my mom’s makeup! It feels more real as well to be up close to her and prepare her for an event, I have bad eyes and applying makeup has made me more aware of how old she is and what she has sacrificed to raise us and I want to make the most of what time we have left together.
Makeup is just so complex as both something with utility, a means for beauty, and a chance for expression and creativity. Who are you? What is the image you want for yourself? There are so many unsaid biases about beauty that goes into it and I think it’s wonderful how it can provoke some thinking about what you want and what are your needs. Appearances aren’t everything but it’s not nothing to us. I feel more comfortable having lunches out with family knowing the photos would look nice. I like being able to lean more androgynous with my looks. I like finding ways to make it seem like I am less tired than I am because I am chronically ill and people start acting weird about it.
I may have lost the plot with where this comment was supposed to go lol but it’s just weird how some mistake purchases end up saving something else sometimes. Like Chekhov’s gun or something 😂
Ok I finally looked up the Dior beige eyeshadow bc I’ve loved it so much bc of you and it was 15% off at Macys with free shipping so I bought it. I’m so excited. I have fair skin and green eyes so I love taupes so much. Can’t wait to try it. You’ve influenced me to buy so many great products. You’ve never steered me wrong ❤
Yes! I’ve got so many foundations that are too light for me in the summer. So I recently bought a skin tint that I can use to mix my correct summer shade. Win win - no waste, $ saver and a more preferable viscosity for my mature skin - happy🤗
I just gave one of my friends all of the butter melt bronzers and blush I bought hoping they would one day work, purely because everyone I saw on UA-cam raves about them. I tried each of them at least 6 times, and every time I hated the way they looked. I like a super buildable powder blush/bronzer and hated only being able to take a tiny little tap. My friend is Latina and she loved the colors when I showed her, and I think they will look much better on her deeper skin!
I buy way too much makeup. Too much for one face. I have decided that I do spend too much money trying to find a dupe. I will end up saving money buying what I want in the first place. I also would love a video on finding your own makeup style.
Yes! I always use stuff that is meh and let my faves sit. Like why?? I’m going to start getting rid of those products. Also, anything I know I had before the pandemic or products I know I moved with (I moved a couple of years ago) I’m tossing. Time gets away from me usually but having these events in time enable me to have a concrete idea of how long I e had something now. Tossing! Also, it feels good to get rid of stuff sometimes.
I’m decluttering every single eyeshadow except my bronze divine luxe quad from pat mcgrath. It is my icon, I get compliments on it all the time. And I think I’m done buying eyeshadow for a long time! I want to get a product like this in every category because I spent 10,000 on beauty this year and I am not in the beauty space at all and don’t even wear it to work really so I need to cut back HEAVY. my products are going to waste so this was amazing. ❤ I’m tired of feeling guilty and looking to minimize.
Omg, I totally agree! life is wayyyy too short to use terrible products. I’m a big fan of declutters. So much makeup just doesn’t work out. Why is that my fault?! 🤷♀️
I found you searching for taupe-wet look shadows bc I too am addicted and have been for yeeears😂❤ so pls don’t stop🙃🙃🙃🙃 the holy grail trail is fun and I wear them daily to enjoy them! (No mascara)
Thank youuuu. ❤I finally decluttered the ELF putty bronzer because of you. It made my cheeks break out 😢 I held onto it for years hoping one day it would work. But you’re right! Why waste my time putting on something I don’t enjoy! Or something that doesn’t work!
"The symmetry of these pimples is uncanny" 😂😂 it really is. Thanks for the chuckle hahah. And thanks for another thought-provoking video ❤ also, those earrings are gorgeous!
Yes! Please do a video on finding your own personal makeup style! That would be so helpful. :-) BTW, red lipstick for me is your taupy grey eyeshadow. I feel I must try every red out there. :-)
LOVE this video, Amanda!! I've not been reaching for my Canmake cream blush in Terracotta even though it's lovely, but I don't love the packaging (it's hard to open and the cover pops off if I'm too rough) and I just reach for Merit's blush in Fox way more because it's just so much more pleasant to use, so maybe it's time to declutter the Canmake... Other potential declutters include my only Fenty concealer that is a bit too light for my skintone, an Elf lip oil because I have conceded that I DISLIKE lip oils/glosses, a Sephora lipstick that's way too vampy for me to wear enough on a daily basis, some Tarte palettes that I only ever use 1-2 shades of... the list goes on LOL
Earlier this year, I decluttered all the makeup that I didn't enjoy using. I've been more conscientious about my purchases. I should go through my collection again this year and pull out any more new stuff that I don't want to use anymore.
Very good reminders. I put a calendar reminder on my phone for exactly 6 months after I open a tube of mascara so I can toss it, I wear contacts and it’s not worth the risk. Other makeup tho…I really need to declutter my cream blushes though some as old as 2020 and they are just creating clutter as I don’t use them any more, just stick to my favorites.
Your striped sweater analogy completely applies to me and lip color. I have soooooo many near identical lipsticks 🤦♀️🤦♀️ I mean, I guess that I know what I like??
I have let go of a few foundations 😅 I trust and recommend the about face, salt NY sneaky balm, and heimish moringa bb cream for good formula and shade range. I’m considered a light/medium as I should be in the about face instead of trying to make the “darkest” shade of a Korean brand foundation work for me 😅 the shade 25 in the heimish is perfect for me year round, 27 in the summer or to mix; I believe 11 in the sneaky balm; L2olive and LM2olive in the about face are my best matches. I’m letting go of NARS Punjab because I have realized it’s too golden of an undertone, and Fiji is just too light, so those are the foundation options Im going to be loyal to in 2025
I put my expired makeup in a little museum. I don’t use them. I don’t let the terrible performers into my museum…they get tossed. My sister volunteered at a local food bank in a small city. She always collected the makeup bags and samples from all of us. She would have them as a special treat for anyone who wanted them.
I know all about duplicates. I consistently pick up true red & peachy-pink lip products, mostly as a quick pick-me-up if I'm having a bad day & happen to be shopping. I have to go thru my lip products a couple of times a year to weed out the stuff I'm not using & will likely never use. I don't need 5 red lip glosses that are all almost the exact same shade of red, you know?
I've been on the hunt for a good replacement for MUFE Reboot in R230 for ages. I settled on a GA Luminous Silk that is too light for me. I finally tried the right shade on the MUFE HD Hydroglow, and it's the closest. I had originally tried their recommended match, but it was way too dark, and I gave up. Tried again, and sure enough, I love it. It's 1R02, not 1R12.
Just decluttered my 3 year old Patrick Ta blush in She’s Blushing (my favorite ever 😫) because the texture changed and it smelled like crayons. I was super sad about it because I can’t afford to buy a new one (new mom and money is tight) but honestly I’ve had an opportunity over the last couple weeks to explore my other blushes that I’ve neglected a little bit and that’s not a bad thing. I still miss my favorite, but it’s good that I’m being forced to branch out and get some use out of my other products. 🤷♀️
I know you’re going to “hate” me (not really) but I’m finally going to declutter space cowboy 😂 the undertone looks sickly on my olive undertone and it doesn’t do anything for me. I wish I had friends who wear eyeshadow that I could give it to!
Your comments on foundations - omg I have wasted SO MUCH MONEY buying online and not getting the correct match. From now on, I will not buy foundation unless I try it on first and it matches. I used to wear Chanel which I loved, but the fragrance is so strong now that I can't bear it. I wear Chanticaille Future Skin Foundation and voila! A perfect match. It's pricey but fragrance free, nice and light - so no need to go searching anymore.
Please do the personal makeup style video lol, although I feel like I already know what mine is (the same taupey eyeshadows you use + red lipstick but rarely both at the same time lol, as well as mascara and dark brown eyeliner) but I don't feel entirely satisfied with it and am always looking for a good nude lipstick for my pale fair olive-ish skin, but they all suck LMAO. Also I am very interested in the Shiseido eyeshadow actually lol since it's one of the (slightly...) cheaper high end brands I can get here, not that I want to get things from the brand because of that but I am interested in expanding my options especially if the products are actually good and also a bit cheaper. Are there any Shiseido products you'd recommend? Or just general opinions on their lipsticks for example, if you've tried them. And, unrelated, but are there any lipsticks you have tried that dupe the colour of MAC Diva? That and Dior 777 Fahrenheit (and possibly colour dupes for this as well? I genuinely can't tell if Lisa Eldridge Velvet Dragon is a colour match or not) are my perfect reds ("reds"?) but for whatever reason (the need to spend money) every time I go to buy Diva I end up with a completely different MAC lipstick and I've acquired 6 of them so far (+ 2 glosses and I don't even really wear or like gloss) and I dislike at least 4/6 of them
If at all possible can you turn the closed captions thingy on for your videos? Bc of learning disorders I have a hard time actually grasping what’s being said alot of times without the subtitles.
If I were to declutter my 'officially' expired makeup, according to the expiry date on the pacakge, I would have to declutter half of my makeup lol. I am more careful with liquids tho eheheheh
I have a very small makeup kit and i've decided to not buy anything new till' i'm not finishing what i already have. I have products that work perfect for me and i don't need anything else.
I JUST threw out some mascaras that I KNOW were probably a year, to two years old and was still using. I didn’t get rid of them until I got a stye as a wake up call
This was wonderful. I stopped the video halfway through and was ruthless. Stuff that's too old and stuff that I don't love. Gone. I still have a couple of powder products (eyeshadow palettes and loose powder). But four almost new lipsticks, as well as a couple that are expired and the wrong undertones, a concealer that's way too light and makes under my eyes look like prunes (Elf Hydrating Camo Concealer) and two blushes that were too old are history.
Thank you, earlier I was torn on the Ace Beaute Pro Cream Contour palette. I have no clue how to use it, all the colors make me look like trump so doing an nose contour was a no go, but I overthought it and was like this is worth money, perhaps I should watch 20 more contour with cream tutorials and maybe someday I will make it work... I just threw it away. And two nail polishes that stunk but I was all well they make good base coats for glitter polish.... OMG So does my OPI and Essie.. No need to keep the crap just because it can be used. If I would rather use a different one. The sweater effect is alive in me in Nail Polishes. I only seem to have black, gray, blue and purple (almost the exact same shades in different brands)
Over the years, I've found that I am consistently disappointed with dupes. Some people only look at a product's color and call it a dupe. It is much, much more than that. Does it apply as well? Does it last as long? How does it look on my skin? Unless a content creator, who I trust completely, says there is absolutely no difference between two products, then I don't get the "dupe".
Haha the duplicate part... 😅 I decluttered my make up in the fall and swatched all the lipsticks I wanted to get rid off and let me tell you they were identical 😂 I just didn't use that type of colour I guess. And discussing make up with my sister then ended up yelling at her for still using a eyeshadow palette she got from me in 2017 or so ☠️🤢
I wont do this. But I could actually throw away all of my makeup. I work a factory job and never have time to do makeup in the mornings. So all of my makeup is either unused or expired.
Especially when I’m in a hurry I grab my absolute no fail go to products … Lisa Eldridge skin tint Natasha D powder foundation mini my dream blush Lancome bronzer in fair Lisa Eldridge Rouge SIMONE DIOR beige Mitzah YSL Lash clash Lancome eyeliners in brown 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
I did the trying to get the dupe, feeling that I failed at it, buying the original for bocoup bucks and finding that the DUPES ARE BETTER. case in point: Violette_FR bisou balms < Bobbi Brown crushed lipstick < Peripera Ink Velvet.
You + Sigma = the perfect red blush. Crossing fingers.
So true
This!💯🎯💯
So true! I've never thought of it that way!
As Hannah Louise Poston famously said : ‘you like what you like, so you probably already have it.’ I try to remind myself of that regularly.
so well put!!!
It's embarrassing how many times I've bought the same nail polish or lipstick or eyeshadow because I like what I like.
I mean I accidentally bought the same thing, I wasn't replenishing.
@@morgantaylor517 you are definitely not the only one!
Eesh…. I felt this 😳🥲

I really needed this video. Thank you for giving us the permission we should be giving ourselves.
Omg, I totally agree! life is wayyyy too short to use terrible products. I’m a big fan of declutters. So much makeup just doesn’t work out. Why is that my fault?! 🤷♀️
💯🎯💯
I have really tried to not keep trying whatever is new. Merit rouge is hands down my favorite. Looks so stunning and natural. Also adore Benetint.
This is such a good video!!
Greetings from South Korea!
I have an eye shadow from Mac from 2009 and it performs the same! I sanitize it every so often and I ain’t throwing it out!
This makeup look is beautiful, and I love your sweater 🖤
I love your sweater!
Yes on personal makeup style video!
I’m letting go of NARS Punjab because I have realized it’s too golden of an undertone, and Fiji is just too light, so those are the foundation options Im going to be loyal to in 2025
Hey dry skin sister. Wait until you try the Clinique Moisture Surge Spray. 😍
I needed to hear so much of this!
😬
I put my expired makeup in a little museum. I don’t use them. I don’t let the terrible performers into my museum…they get tossed. My sister volunteered at a local food bank in a small city. She always collected the makeup bags and samples from all of us. She would have them as a special treat for anyone who wanted them.
Would love a video about personal makeup style ❤
Okay, I was so excited to watch this video but I could not stop staring at that sweater!! Where is it from?
Have you tried the danessa myricks blush highlighter? does it last all day long and is it dewy or does it turn matte?at
I know all about duplicates.
I need a highlighter recommendation in liquid, without shimmer or metallic please and thank you ❤
I've been on the hunt for a good replacement for MUFE Reboot in R230 for ages.
I needed to hear the point about trendy makeup you don’t actually like. Bye bye every bronzing drop I’ve tried.
Hannah! Do you follow me on Instagram? Can you send me a DM? I'd love to buy you a new one.
@@AmandaZ❤
I know you’re going to “hate” me (not really) but I’m finally going to declutter space cowboy 😂 the undertone looks sickly on my olive undertone and it doesn’t do anything for me. I wish I had friends who wear eyeshadow that I could give it to!
Yes please to the personal makeup style
Yes, to a video on personal makeup style.
I genuinely can't tell if Lisa Eldridge Velvet Dragon is a colour match or not) are my perfect reds ("reds"?) but for whatever reason (the need to spend money) every time I go to buy Diva I end up with a completely different MAC lipstick and I've acquired 6 of them so far (+ 2 glosses and I don't even really wear or like gloss) and I dislike at least 4/6 of them
Have you tried the Dior glow star filter?
What is the lip color you’re wearing in the video? Thanks! 😘
20:50 this is the combo I used!! :) lovetint and benetint
If at all possible can you turn the closed captions thingy on for your videos? Bc of learning disorders I have a hard time actually grasping what’s being said alot of times without the subtitles.
absolutely! It is on but for some reason it is still processing so it might take a second im sorry about that!
@ that’s ok, I really appreciate that you took time out to help me and possibly others. I really enjoy your content.
I appreciate this too!
I gave away my Dior gloss ..hated it !
❤❤❤
I’m so sad :( for the longest time I suspected that rare beauty blush breaks me out and this is my sign. It’s out
Over the years, I've found that I am consistently disappointed with dupes.
Expired makeup?! Not eyeshadows?! I will not let go of my eyeshadows!
Rhode cream straight up burned. The milk made me red when I put it on even though I used it up
Wait, so you're saying I should get rid of my Coastal Scents 88 Shimmer Palette from 2009? Lol
I love when companies don't make my size or shade. Oh, good you didn't think about me so I don't have to ever think about you again.
Cemetery of Pimps 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have been clearing everything that triggers my fungal acne (skincare and makeup!) which I now found out that I have lol
Would you kindly do us a favor and try to stop waving products around. We can't get a glimpse of what you are showing. Love your videos.
She lists all of the products, whether discussed or used or both, in the description.
