For your water you might wanna look into a device people put into chicken waterreservoirs to prevent them from freezing . They use very little power and will probably keep it just above freezing temperatures.
Maybe try to agitate the water surface w like an aquarium bubbler. Idk how cold it gets there's so maybe agitation is not a viable solution for your temps. Cool VW.
I live in a Vanagon tintop around the PNW and use a 5 gallon office cooler water container with a Dolphin hand pump. Easy to carry and refill at grocery stores or other sources. Thanks for all the great videos.
I’m thinking about ripping out the westy water tank so I can use Jerry cans under the sink. Much simpler setup, less water but less to freeze and way more manageable with insulation
For van travel, we swear by using vinegar/water 50:50 for cleaning utensils, countertops, etc Saves a ton of water and the mild acid cleans everything right up/degreases a $1-2 bottle of vinegar at Walmart lasts easily a couple months
I thought much of the beginning stuff is funny. Laundry in Nevada cost half of what your charged. Big problem in Las Vegas is people live in the laundromats and use the washers as toilets. I liked the filming inside the dryer and the time-lapse clothes folding. Great Show Thanks
When I was 27 I bought a new 30 foot Catalina sailing yacht and moved aboard it on the Columbia River in Portland, OR. I used a plastic 6.6 gallon jerry can to fill up with water where I worked and then filled my boat's water tank from the inside during the winter. In warmer weather I used a hose from the faucet on the docks. That worked out fine for me. I usually showered at my folks place. I used electric coffee pot hot water to shave and wash my face daily before work. The boat did have pressure water and a 5 gallon water heater so I could shower on board using limited water if I wanted. The water tank on the boat was 25 gallons.
I would love to get into a sailboat! I spent a lot of time at marinas in Alaska last year and they all had showers and potable water for cheap! I’ll definitely be getting a boat in the future
I have an suv for ref. I'm using a diesel heater to heat a water tank for showers and an ieik pump from amazon. Its amazing! -18f outside was the coldest but similar to a hot spring.
I shower every single day without it you feel dirty, there are people who take a bath with just one bucket of water, cause water is not readily available for some folks. When you live in tropical climates,a shower every day is absolutely a must,in a cold climate where you don't sweat a lot it can be less.
Hey there Sebastian, Jefferson here again with the two Vanagons (and 🌎 first A8L Avant) that are not yet out on the roads but definitely living vicariously through your adventures with your beloved machine. ❄️🖤🇺🇸 If you are familiar with the GREASE CAR waste vegetable oil VWO kits they have a copper coil running through the TIG welded aluminum auxiliary tank so once the thick grease reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit a solenoid can can switched over for their TDI engine to run off that fuel. I am wondering if you can do the same with a copper coil placed just adjacent your tank on either side or below with an electric or manual valve so you can shut it off during the summer? You can tie in the copper coil to your cooling system and have 🔥HOT🔥 G12 pink stuff keep you precious water from freezing. Otherwise what if you just add more ducting to your little diesel heater that will direct a small portion of warm air towards your water tank (I have two of those heaters new in boxes as well😅) Those are my ideas thus far for your situation. I know how it sucks to have to fill such a massive volume tank from such a small spigot as my home's water softener is down and the girls in my family rely on me to fill a 2 gallon tank thrice a week from a nearby water softener company that offers free 24/7 reverse osmosis treated and filtered water 💦 for our town 🌊. Thanks so much for the videos, while watching them I am about pumped to get my silver beast running but really hate to work on it outside at 18 degrees and 2 hours away in Ohio. STAY WARM MY FRIEND. 🦾
when Im on the road in my Westfalia I use one of them cheap plastic garden sprayers you can buy at any Home Depot. I like the 2.5 gal size. You put a kettle of hot water inside and then more cold water. It has a hand pressure pump on top and you just pump air pressure into the unit. I removed the plastic wand and installed a kitchen sink sprayer with five feet of hose but you could just use it as it comes from the store.
Yeah I lived in my car for about 6 months.. had a membership to planet fitness. So when I would travel I would take a shower whatever city I landed in.. hygiene is important. Especially for a female. I washed clothes everywhere. Cheapest place would be Arizona. Love your videos. Glad you were able to get water..
It’s a lot easier than people think! There are showers everywhere if you look hard enough. My first week at work I think I asked everyone here if there was a shower anywhere on the property. Sadly everyone said no but it doesn’t hurt to ask!
Go to home Depot and get a screw on bucket lid to keep dirty clothes in and add white vinegar to keep your socks from tainting youre clothes 😅 it works great 👍
You can buy a 12 volt heating element. It's usually made for heating one cup of water for tea on instant coffee Maybe it would be enough to keep temperature above the freezing mark
It's gonna be a long month of posting for you but looking forward to watching what happens next. That water jug would do better up and off the floor...heat raises, lol
I thought about that and even started looking at trough heaters but they draw a lot so I’d need a battery dedicated just for it. Might be worth it to have running water all winter before I change the setup completely
I have thought of that but I’ll need to route it a weird way or take it out completely and go crazy with a hole saw. I’m planning on redoing the whole system next summer so I can have running water year round regardless of the temperature
Wondering what you might get as feedback to resolve water issues..?? Seasonally, the large capacity tank and your SHURflo set-up is a great little system and a well thought out part of the Westfalia's, but.. despite the many heating options out there for staying warm (inside the van), shy of bringing your water source/container inside with you (at work..?) to keep it from freezing; as you said in your video....could be a long winter. Good luck managing that unique challenge in your VW .!! 😊
If the westy tank was easily removable I would try insulating the wall behind it but right now I don’t think there’s anything between the tank and wall. I know there isn’t much under it. Definitely no insulation which is why it’s the first to freeze.
@@Sebastianstonum Good point and great comments already with differing 'tank heaters', which as you've replied require/use energy. Though my 82' Westy diesel is in storage (here in Wisconsin), I'm familiar with freezing and as a heads up, that SHURflo connection/check valve (if you used it), which allows a city water connection....it freezes and breaks..!! I learned (the hard way) to blow the line from the faucet to the tank as my first outing one spring having only drained the tank; my turning the faucet on for my first coffee... flooded the cabinet below the sink. 😏 Just a heads up once things thaw out and you attempt the faucet again. 👍
You seem like a very intelligent young man. I’m sure you will figure it out real quick. Only suggestion is maybe a tarp for the next oil change? Or something to lay down on, but hey man you got it done and it was impressive. Best of luck
THAT LAUNDRYMAT IS HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!! GREAT VID STAY WARM! THANK YOU

Hey Sebastian, thanks for making this video! Definitely something that prevented me from taking the plunge on full timing in my Subie!
Finding places to shower is soooo easy. There’s no way I’d ever build a van with one in it
Great video. Thnx!
You are a very organised person.
Bonjour and good presentation on the cold 🥶. Stay safe and warm.
Remind me of the days of living in Canada 🇨🇦
For the water freezing issue, Buy an rv tank heating pad. They are 12v and work great. Cheap and easy.
I’ve actually been looking into those! I’ll let you know if I try it
@ I live in my camper full time and it has them. We have been in -10 and it didn’t freeze. Well worth it.
You need a livestock tank heater. It keeps a water tank thawed in the winter.
Great video.

Submersible aquarium heater might be useful to prevent your water tank freezing.

12 or 24 volt immersion heater to defrosting the water tank. It can take long with 12 or 24 voltage, but to melt the ice it don,t has to boil.
As long as I can keep it just above freezing. That’s all I’m aiming for
Does water stay in the pump, pipe, faucet? Is it also at risk of freezing ?
I believe there's wires that heat that you can wrap around your tank and/or pipes.
@@thibaudepeche that,s why the houses in Jakutsk, Sacha, Russia don,t have water pipes due to the feezing cold temperatures 9 months a year.
You can buy a 12 volt heating element. It's usually made for heating one cup of water for tea on instant coffee
Maybe it would be enough to keep temperature above the freezing mark
That might actually be enough! And wouldn’t draw much power so I could leave it on all the time. I’m going to look into this
To fix your water problem just use the heat wire for plumbing.. maybe when you're driving you could plug it in to defrost your tank
How about the kind of water heater that goes in a fish aquarium. Somehow hook it up to your water tank
Maybe you can use a ali express usb heating pad? If there’s a way to place it against the tank
It's gonna be a long month of posting for you but looking forward to watching what happens next. That water jug would do better up and off the floor...heat raises, lol
There is 12 volt tank heating pads you may can try. They would go under the tank if you a have access. No sure how many amps they pull though.
I thought about that and even started looking at trough heaters but they draw a lot so I’d need a battery dedicated just for it. Might be worth it to have running water all winter before I change the setup completely
Could you possibly tap into your diesel heater vents and run a small hose to the cabinets to keep the water tank warm?
I have thought of that but I’ll need to route it a weird way or take it out completely and go crazy with a hole saw.
I’m planning on redoing the whole system next summer so I can have running water year round regardless of the temperature
I see that the tape is still holding up in your water tank 👍
It’s stronger than the cap!
And If I need to replace it, i have a whole roll😂

Gym, Tan, Laundry is now Gym, Van-Laundry. #GTL/#GVL 🙃🤌
Random idea but I wonder if a fish tank heater would work to prevent freezing. I bet they pull so little energy and would prevent freezing

I’m filming on the Sony a7iii and all the pov shots on DJI action 4

How many gallons of water does that van hold?
It’s supposed to be 12 gallons. I wonder how long 12 gallons of water will take to freeze!
