  • If you have water dripping from your top-mounted freezer down into your refrigerator, don't call the repairman. It could be a simple solution that you can fix yourself.
This issue commonly happens when the defrost drain line gets frozen and clogged. During the defrost cycle, the (normally cold) coils get heated, and any excess frost/ice melts and drips down into a drain pain. The drain can easily become frozen and will no longer drain.
The solution involves first melting the ice and making sure the drain line is no longer clogged. Then you'll use a small scrap piece of copper wire wrapped around the heating element to transfer heat down into the drain (preventing future ice build up.)
Several manufacturers sell an aluminum clip that attaches to the coil and sticks down into the drain. These parts are usually $5-10, but you can achieve the same results with a free piece of copper wire.
This issue can happen with side-by-side refrigerators as well. The solution is similar, but obviously the process will look a little different.
