The Art of the Album series aims to give listeners the authoritative release of classic albums. With no extra tracks to distract or bulk up the reissue, the album itself is given the spotlight and for this release, Alan Vega and Martin Rev’s eponymous debut has been remastered and is presented with exclusive photographs and extensive sleeve notes by The Quietus’ John Doran detailing the album’s context, craft and legacy with interviews with many of the players.
Suicide formed in the early 70s, reemerging in 1976 at the heart of the New York punk scene. The band continued releasing and performing until 2015’s acclaimed Punk Mass at the Barbican, London and Alan Vega’s death in July 2016.
Originally released in 1977 on the Red Star label, Suicide were given barely any credit at the time but still it was unleashed into the world, its influence has been incalculable - numerous magazines have included it in their Greatest Albums lists, including MOJO, Uncut, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and NME, and the volume bands they went on to inspire throughout the decades is huge, with New Order, Depeche Mode, Bruce Springsteen, Moby, Soft Cell, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream and Nick Cave just a few who have acknowledged their debt to the duo.

I almost screamed in the theater when this started playing during Civil War. I remember listening to this song all the time in college while driving, always thinking it was the ultimate “stare out the window pretend you’re in a music video” song. So to see it used showing the characters driving through Americana in ruins felt like the director deliberately snatching that scene from my mind. Just an incredible scene!
Dude I had the exact same reaction, what a perfect marrying of two great things !!
Heck yeah----I discovered Suicide by reading about them back in the '90s, got their first two albums on a cassette, and played the hell of them---always liked the first album better though. I also thought it would have been perfect music for a scene in a '70s film where someone was racing through the desert. But.yeah, it was so perfect for the road trip scene it was played over in the movie Civil War, which is both good and intense as hell.
And if that wasnt awesome enough, they end the movie with dream baby dream
iam here ..again because i just saw the movie ....and i heard Suicide back in early 80s and i found it very similar to the Civil War sound track
i concur
Awesome to see many people are discovering this song from Civil War
exactly been a fan for years of suicide
Yeah I got my phone out and Shazammed it.
It’s actually fucking lame.
Movie or music video? Make up your mind. Shits fucked. Now it’s in a fucking Prada commercial.
This went hard as hell when it popped up in Civil War.
The same reason I am here now :) Great song.
Yessir!!
Totally. Such a brilliant choice.
Probably going to get a lot of views like ghost rider did. Civil war
me when I'm driving thru the wasteland that was once the greatest country on Earth
USA was never the greatest country u guys have done nothing good
I've always loved how he uses the vocal echo like it's an instrument.
WE ARE MAKIN IT OUT OF NYC WITH THIS ONE! 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Just got back from a screening of Civil War. I was transported to my life on the Lower East Side in 1977 and started dancing in my seat when this tune came up. Heading over to pull my vinyl and play it nice and loud.
I discovered this album in 1990. Couldn’t believe it was made in the 70s. Still superb in 2021.
Same. Still holds up
Sounds like the no rules 70s to me. It would be strange if it was made in the 40s
@smoki bandit- it is a mixture of rockabilly punk vocals and minimal synth, both of which were prevalent in the 70s- punk (vocals) and Krautrock (pioneering the use of synth), as well as BBC studios.
Suicides sound also has a sound of 70s CBGB's "don't care about making money' attitude.
'Seething' , settle down sweetheart and try not to get hysterical
@smoki bandit - why ? Every act sounded different to each other but have elements that are distinctly 70s.
I just explained as to what elements make it sound like its from the 70s.
Do. You. Comprehend. Or. Are. You. Going. To. Harm. A. Small. Animal ?
Freak
@smoki bandit - your just a handle full of current buzzwords, mostly out of context.
Basic
'We had Suicide with us in New York. Vega was one of the bravest men I've ever seen on stage. No one in England had ever heard anything like Suicide, and a lot of people weren't having it. I seen a bottle miss his head, and then he bent down and picked it up and smashed it off his own head.'
Joe Strummer
Sound was way way too far in the future.
Incredible album.
Genius
“It’s doomsday, doomsday” beyond genius, this was so seminal and galvanising. Definitely one of the 10 greatest albums of all time.
"Gonna crash,
Gonna die,
*and I don't care."*
Words to live b-……..never mind
We drivin to D.C with this one
I like how hypnotizing this music is.
Heard this song and Dream Baby Dream in CIVIL WAR tonight. The freeway scrapyard and the fallen White House scenes were brilliant, and it was movie magic to hear these Suicide tracks playing during those moments in the film. Alan Vega was a genius and truly ahead of his time. I'm glad these songs are making such a splash and a comeback in 2024!
I discovered this band in 2010! Sputnik rip off I thought, then I found out it was made in 1977?!?!? It took me years to get over it! I was huge SSS fan..........
magnificent album! what a song! few bands managed to sound like this! i think it was jesus and mary chain with psychocandy and velvet underground! totally chill, yet so punk rock and new wave

The soundtracks of Alex Garland films are always on point
Alex Garland learned well from his buddy Danny Boyle... 😊
One of the most important albums ever released
perfect fit for the ny scene in civil war
This was right after the Jesse Plemmons scene, right?
@@jamesstetson6581pretty sure it was when they started their roadtrip
the NY scene at the beginning is Lovefingers - Silver Apples

The sonics on this recording kill me -- jesus what an intense paranoid hallucinatory vibe
One of the perks of watching Civil War was discovering this song.
I want to check out the rest of their music
1976 wow, sounds timeless
That movie definitely had an interesting soundtrack, not like the usual soundtrack you'd expect. But maybe a more modern take and like Full Metal Jacket.
Masterpiece! So many bands copy the Echo in his voice. Like i dont F'n know
Here there is nothing anticipation but sometimes that's all you need, sounds very psychedelic and Punk Rockish. thanks for sharing.
Timeless, like Louie Louie.
the big New York sound
Civil war was such a great movie, such a unique and awesome soundtrack.
: its doomsday tuesday : 22 02 2022
love to DJ in the Tate modern playing this along Side Ghot rider And Frankie Tear drop That would be a master piece
Such a good song. Thank you Alex
Civil War brought me here.
Same! Thought it was really good
@@LethalShot3190I really love the atmosphere but the characters were a little flat.
@@syntheticreality549 oh absolutely the atmosphere was done so damn well! The cinematography and the sound was top-notch! I do wish the characters had more development but still the movie ended up being very good👍💯
Its happening, civil war
Proto, pre everything!
Rock It Miss USA (by Sigue Sigue Sputnik)
holy hell civil war got some good old road trip bangers man
I was a massive Sputnik fan in the mid eighties. It was many, many years later that I learned they'd pretty much lifted their entire sound from Suicide.... They even nicked this song title!
and the red star logo
And, to put it bluntly, they were shit. Somebody stop Tony James!
I recently brought a Deluxe Edition of their "Flaunt It" album, 2 songs in I remember they were interesting Garbage at best and overwhelmingly awful as a whole - Tony is at last look still trying to make it. Why is Billy Idol?
@@curly_wynNot early on. They had several good songs.
They were inspired. Much like Duran Duran were by Japan.
Alex Garland's Civil War brought me here... 😎🤘🍻
I can hear the Stooges influence. 1969.
Riding ‘round in my Chevy *69* ;)

drop dead gorgeous
The late Steve Albini (Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac and multi times producer) included this in his top 20 ( actually 27) all time favorite songs. Here's the playlist for anybody intrested: ua-cam.com/play/PLNINWcxxj9hHJy_jbypnlYKcEnyO25GHa.html&si=PibFfJsgwoiiuoo8

I'm amazed they chose this song for the film
My 16-year-old son new this song before me, and I thought i knew music. Please bring this music style back
LOVE this
Civil war brought me here
🔥♥️
I don’t know how I’ve got to 56 years old and never heard this (or Suicide) before. Heard it in Civil War, immediately Shazam’d it and been listening ever since
Sounds like, what happens when you do to many lines of speed.
Akhirnya lagu ini dikenal 😭😭
If I were a black muslim in "the Warriors" I might say "Can you dig it?".
Later, suige suige sputnik.
"If you can count, suckas!!!!"

Thingsll never be the same
Movie reminded me of Apocalypse Now
Suicide ❤
When this popped up in Civil War, the record geek in me almost took me out of the movie for a second. Good pull by Garland and his music supervisor on the movie.
Is this band some sort of Singapore Sling?
8:30 ce matin. En avion, pas en fusée.
Acabo de descubrir este tema gracias a la película Civil War 😮 un gran tema 😊 una canción más para la lista 🎉 saludos desde Perú 🇵🇪
AH!
Civil war 2024 movie
As soon as it started in civil war i instanly recognized it, so surpised actually about the choice of the soundtrack
🖤
Probably my favorite needle drop from A24's Civil War.
Makes me feel as if I were a blonde girl, living in New York.
I drive in taxis through the city. I shop for the best black shoes out there.
I eat caviar that I don't pay back.
I live in the underground of the city.
This is such a great song tbh, especially in civil war I’m like “I’ve heard this song before”
Huh!!!
Didn’t zigue zigue Sputnik just steak this tune ?
They straight up lifted it! Damn you Tony James.
I never heard this song but when I heard it in Civil War I knew it was Suicide immediately
Thanks to civil war for letting me know this beautiful sound....❤
Sounds like a sigue sigue sputnik demo 😀
Bro I was so surprised when this song came up in civil war
Nerdrotic talking about Civil War brought me here
Civil War! brought me here
rip steve albini
shout out to my guy Victor for introducing me to Suicide (the band)
From the D.
Excuse my ignorance but I thought this little hit was from the 2020s, but it's from the '70s! So much for the decade without style.
I imagine My Teacher Aid Driving Away from The city in The Reset😅
Welcome heart of darkness in the United States of America... wait until see.
Another victim of civil war. This tune was in another movie as well, just can’t place it?
civil war 2024
I am from colombia and i am here due to civil war movie.
This sounds like it was made on a Casiotone keyboard - why does anyone pretend it's good?
Dick comment - congratulations.
It's a pretty good song given that it was made on a Casiotone, mainly because that's all the band could afford to use at the time ---that's what I read about them years ago.
Jesus Christ… who sold the rights to use this song in a fucking Prada commercial?!!
Fucks sakes.
NOT punk rock!
Civil war brought me here
Me too
