Modifying my KTM 390 Adventure. How much did I spend?

    I've done a few more modifications than you did, and I spent a little more--$5800 total. But I paid $5500 for my 2020, so the total comes to $11,300 which is less than I paid for my new Beta 390 RR-S, and the Beta is not as versatile. I did VMX tubeless spoked wheels, which are MUCH better than the KTM ones. I kept the cast wheels with Conti TKC70s on them for when I'm going to do a 90% pavement ride--it takes me about 1/2 an hour to swap. And I replaced the entire exhaust system with a 2018 390 Duke exhaust which has no cat, no resonator, and wraps around the engine instead of under it. Since I did that I needed to make my own skid plate since no one makes one which isn't for the under-the-engine exhaust. I have lots of clearance and my homebrew skid plate attaches like the black dog plate. I tried the black dog pegs, didn't like them and switched to some pivoting flat pegs. I made my own kickstand sensor disabling switch that allows me to bypass the KS sensor if it either screws up or starts bouncing around. I also added a second ABS sensor to the front wheel so I can disable the rear sensor without trouble codes. I switch it to the front with just a SPDT switch. I made my own turn signal/auxiliary brake and stop light mounted on my number plate holder, and modified the wiring on some Cyclops auxiliary lights so the amber running lights are now turn signals, I use Mosko Moto Reckless (rackless) 80 bags and the Mosko Nomax tank bag, which includes a camelbak. I also use crashbar bags, one side for my somewhat huge toolkit, the other for a Green Chile recovery system. It's a great little bike, more versatile than either my 701 Husky or my 390 Beta. Without the luggage on it my bike weighs 330#. I took a lot of stuff off.

      Hi @ponobill sounds like a sweet set up! did you have to modify/weld/cut anything to install the duke exhaust system? Also do you run your can high or still below the swing arm? Thanks

      @@paoloaldi1030no. It’s a bolt on mod. The exhaust header ends in the same place as the resonator so the muffler is in the stock position.

    Thanks for the video, I have a 195kg Adventure bike and a Toyota Prado (AU GX), that I was thinking about doing the same. I'm interested to see how things are going with this set up now after 1 yr.

      I haven't ridden this bike much in the last year. I was riding a Tenere 700 but absolutely hated it and then picked up an Aprilia Tuareg. The Tuareg has been my main bike this summer. I still get out on the 390 occasionally. I just purchased the Veridian Cruise Control for this bike. I think if I had cruise control sooner I might not have purchased these other bikes. I still think it is a great bike.

    Thanks, Matt. Motorcycles are not inexpensive. I bought a new BMW R1250RS and a KTM 390 Adv last year, then added many mods and accessories to both, then riding gear for both, then camping gear. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to add up what I spent. But hey, I'm enjoying retirement.

    just an fyi for anyone who want to do the resonator delete, I have the coober header cat delete and ecu, and they said don't remove due to loss of back pressure, if your running the coober

      Yeah, great tip. You either remove the stock headers or remove the resonator. You can't do both.

    Great review of the mods Matt. I generally do not count bags as a mod, as I have moved them between bikes.

    It takes a brave man to add up what they've spent on their bike. I am a ways behind you with the 390 yet, but my Tenere 700 had everything (more than I needed even)
    I wish my bike had standard indicators rather than the european led ones.

    It adds up quick! That's why it's usually cheaper to buy a used bike that someone else has already farkled. But, the 390 doesn't really have any peers, and the ones that are close would require most of the mods that you did anyway. I've done front suspension, windscreen, skidplate, pegs, tail rack, rackless luggage, fuelx, heated grips, quadlock mount, and I'm sure a couple other things. Thanks for the continued content.

    What do you think about FuelX? You have a lot of customization in your bike, but this popular add on don't. Do you have a specific reason not to do this? Thanks for your videos. I found a lot of inspiration there.

      I am not a fan of fuel controllers. Most fuel controllers require the catalytic converters be removed and the resonator stays in to maintain back pressure. I don't want the resonator due to heat it produces right next to the shock. I also think there is greater risk of damaging the engine if the fuel mixture is off. The added increase in power and performance is not worth it to me. Hope this helps explain why I haven't done it.

    Got a -23 Spoked Wheel model and spent about $1500 on crash bars, rally seat and performance mods (coober ecu, k&n filter). Selling now but if I kept it I would have added another more straight handle bar, hand protection and heated grips.

    Nice! I've done several of the same ones. Seems like a lot at first but if you factor in the suspension and spoke wheels, the balance over a 3 year timeframe really isn't that much. On a side note, didn't you install a throttle lock as well?

      I did add a throttle lock, forgot to mention that. It hasn't been working very well so it's like it's not really there.

      @@advmatt Yea, seems like the only real solution is retrofitting cruise control but it's a hard sale @ $700 orso. I've been using my old GoCruise for a little relief but typically try to take the long road and avoid hwy as much as possible.

    Its amazing how much we spend on extras on a bike........... we never make it back when we sell but hell isnt that the usual when it comes to toys........
    and you hit it on the head......... all the mods are a great way to just chill in the garage and have a great time.......
    I have built a few old Yami XSs and well just a great time in the garage........ told people before I enjoy building them more than riding them........ its just a great way to spend a rainy evening in the garage.......
    and not sure exactly but have at least 2500 into upgrades on my 23 390....... love the BD skid plate but the noise not so much....

      I have a tip for the noise off the skid plate. I used rubber washers to mount it which dampen the noise and that seemed to fix it. Wrenching on a bike is a great way to unwind. Cheers.

      @advmatt Even easier, I coated my skid plate on the engine side with gorilla glue and then sprayed it with water to catalyze it. the glue foams up to about 1/4" and provides both noise dampening and some impact protection if something I hit pushes the plate close to the engine. Banging on the plate with the gorilla glue foam in place produces a little thumping sound. No ringing.

    I bet the Cost per Mile or Cost per Smile is off the charts! So you haven't felt the need to add stuff like Fuel-X controller or smaller countershaft sprocket?

      Completely off the charts. I have not been compelled to add a fuel controller. I have seen some issues where the bike becomes a bit less reliable with a fuel controller. I have been perfectly happy with the gearing and have no plans to change the counter shaft sprocket. I do too much long distance travel to reduce the gearing and I have never had an issue with it at slow speeds. Keep the rpms up and use the clutch.

    Matt, did you like those Zana racks? I juts bought the Tusk and they are WIDE!!! I may go with Zana too. Any issues mounting the WM bags? I have their 30 liter older raft-material bags.

      I overloaded the Zana racks when I had the Givi bags. The Wolfman are a much better setup and the racks would have lasted forever with the weight carried over the seat. Unfortunately I bent the pannier rack when it was overloaded. I am planning to replace the Zana rack with the Hepco Becker. It looks narrow, at least more than the Tusk. The price is high. With that being said the Zana rack have been really good for the money.

    Matt have you ever considered a steering damper? I have 2022, I find that it will wobble at highway speeds.

      I have never felt like I needed one. I don't get any wobble at Highway speeds. I use Ride On fluid to make sure my wheel and tire are balanced and that seems to work really well for me. Not sure if you are experiencing a tire balance issue.

    Have you kept up with the valve clearance checks on this bike? If memory serves me right, they're about every 9k miles right?

      I have not kept up with the valve clearance checks. I did the first one at 8k miles but haven't done another yet. It's on my to do list this winter. Yeah, it should be every 9k miles.

    About half of my mods were to make my 390 _orangier._
    That adds about 3 mph to the top speed ... sorta.
    I put LED turn signals on front and back. Initially they blinked fast, but after a couple of starts they slowed down to stock.
    I'm an excellent mechanic.

    Do you have any tips for the kickstand being too long after all loaded up? On some terrain, the bins wants to tip over to the right because the kickstand is too long… don’t know if people shorten them or what…

      It sounds to me like you need to increase the preload on the shock so the bike doesn't sag so much. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause the bike to sit very upright on the kickstand. I know after I installed the fork spacers the kickstand seems a bit too short and it leans over toward the kickstand a long way. The only other reason I can think for the kickstand being too long is if a lowering kit was installed, effectively a short shock. In this case you need to purchase a short kickstand. I think I have seen short kickstands on AOMC.mx. I don't know if they come separate from the lowering kit but that will solve your problem. Hope this helps.
