Apples grafted onto semi-dwarf and dwarf rootstock will fruit sooner than than those grafted onto standard rootstock. You can expect semi-dwarf to fruit 2-3 years, and dwarf varieties 2 years after planting, and 4-5 yrs+ on the standard rootstock. With regards to the pollinators, as especially pears, it's important that they all bloom at the same time, otherwise you may receive little or no fruit. So, when selecting trees, make sure they match the blooming sequence of the pollinators or visa versa. Also, its important to identify leaf buds and fruit buds.

I bought and am planting my first fruit trees ever. 63 yrs old and just started gardening 3 spring seasons ago. This year, I redirected slightly to add permaculture beginnings and espaliered fruit trees are part of that plan. Small land plot of 3/4 acre but a perfect size for this old lady's experiments. Great info! Thanks, Mike! I'm off to pinterest now 😉

I love how the fence looks too, but also how you have plenty of apples, pears, etc. production in such a manageable, reachable and yet compact space. It's like a dream orchard without the large scale production going on like in commercial growing. TYVM for the excellent videos Kincaid's! 👍

You're so welcome Darla! That's originally one of the things that drew me to doing this style of pruning. I love the production in a small space, and like you said, very easy to manage.

Nice Job on the espalier. Gala is a good variety in N Tacoma. The Gala apples can be a little small if you do not thin them early. I thin every spur down to a single apple shortly after petal drop, then thin again when they start to swell. The gala consistently come in at 15-16.5 Brix, but I water somewhat sparingly 4-6 weeks before harvest. We had a tasty Fuji tree, but It had to come down due to repeated lawnmower damage. Right now, we just get Gala and Jonagold apples regularly, but I am hoping Queen Cox will bear this year. Jonagold is by far the best apple we have grown-seriously, if you think Gala is productive, Jonagold will blow you away. I have Taylor's Gold (Russet Comice) and Bosc pears, but only Comice looks like it will flower this year.
My apple and pear buds are open, but not flowering, so I have been treating for disease and pests. Yesterday was Immunox, today was Spectracide, and tomorrow will be copper spray. The trick is to get apples and pears after the buds have broken, but before the flowers are open-when the bug eggs are tender & vulnerable. Have you had serious issues with coddling moth and scab? I bag the fruits when they are >1 inch in diameter, and I have been getting great fruit. For good quality, don't forget the late Summer potash/magnesium feeding.
I bought a bunch of Geneva 969 rootstocks to graft onto. Supposed to be fully dwarfing and self-supporting in WA, as well as being extremely resistant to disease.
Apples and pears are nice, but early-ripening European plums are by far the best fruit tree to grow in W.WA. They have fewer pest and disease issues, and are amazing when grown right. Sweet fruits have a tendency to crack/split when September rain/cold comes.
Early Laxton, Early Italian prune, Opal, Queen Victoria, Green Gage, Purple Gage, Rosey Gage, Oullins Gage, Imperial Epineuse, Geneva Mirabelle, American Mirabelle, Mirabelle de Nancy, and Parfume de Septembre Mirabelle are all proven Euro plums for W Washington.
Other plums and plum hybrids are nice, but earlier blooming & not as care-free as the Euros.
Shiro plum, Superior plum, Black Ice plum, Hollywood plum, Redheart plum, AU-Rosa, and Emerald Beaut are good Japanese-type plums. Flavor Grenade Pluot, Flavor Queen Pluot, Dapple Supreme Pluot, Splash Pluot, and Candy Heart pluerry are proven plum hybrids.
White Gold cherry is self-fertile and is very close to Rainier cherry in taste.
Nikita's Gift persimmon is a natural dwarf hybrid that thrives in our climate.
Frost peach has showy pink blossoms, fruit over 19 Brix, and actually grows in W. WA.

    Apple trees look phenomenal.
And yes, it takes time for fruit trees to bear. We already have four saplings that are still growing at (4 years) still no fruit, but they look extravagant with their branches and foliage.

I lived at one house for 26 years. I had two apple trees and two pear trees left to grow in the conventional way, not trained. The apples were very productive especially the cooking apple. The pears never did much until it was about year 20 when one of the trees started to produce a few fruits, around eight or ten. The apples produced enough to keep right through the winter until early spring. At least one apple was eaten each day. Apples always gave tonnes more than pears. All of the trees were treated the same. Although there was never much fruit, if any, on the pears the pollinators loved the flowers.

I am curious as well on the pears as I did just plant and prune 2 bare root ones as well 2 Asian pears that were potted and a few years old.
I did just see a video that said pears don’t like early pruning. I was about to plant a few more Asian pear Esspellier style, but need to research more before.
I am just easing into the whole pruning and it can be stressful, but necessary. But all trees are different. So much to learn, thanks for your content and would love to hear updates.

So far the fruit trees I have didn't produce anything and I bought them fruiting size but every year we had a frost after they flowered. Annoying! No, but only because it's all fenced off to about 6.5 feet in height. The deer got into the orchard once after a tree branch knocked down the fence. The deer did some damage but I repaired the fence and they haven't gotten in since. I wish I could get rid of all the fencing but the deer love the apples and everything else I have planted in the inner orchard. The figs have fared very well so far without fencing.

We put up a 3' high picket fence. Used tall posts every 20' to support the trellis wires for the trees. We grew the trees up to about 7.5 feet tall.
Around the outside of the espalier fence we put a single strand of electric fence wire to keep the deer from browsing our espalier fence.

Your videos are the most helpful I've found and I've seen many! Im trying to prune apple and pear espaliered trees that were neglected a bit. This was our dream orchard and hubby studied and did everything. But he got covid and passed away, now I'm trying to maintain his beautiful orchard. Last year they didn't get any attention at all. The other videos say cut no more than 1/3 but I have many water sprouts that exceeds that limit. Do you think it is ok to finish the job anyway?
The Bartlett pear I have really produces a lot! Its 6 years old. My problem with that tree is it grew so fast its maybe too tall for me to prune...like at least 10ft tall in the center! Any advice on that? Cut anyway? Or let it grow?
I appreciate any advice as I'm a little overwhelmed.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. That's a tough thing for anybody to have to go through. You're taking on a lot by continuing what he started. You can prune more than 1/3 of the plant but only do that in winter while the plant is dormant. If you need to do a major pruning to get the trees back down to size then now is the time but don't wait until they wake up for spring. You may need to hire help if they are too big and you are unable to manage them on your own. If it were me, I'd prune them back to where you want them right now, even if it is a heavy pruning. Then do another light pruning in the summer to get rid of water sprouts and encourage fruit spurs. Good luck and I wish you all the best!

@@MikeKincaid79 Thank you for your response! I will do as you suggest. The apples are still dormant (though not for long I imagine). It has water sprouts that have grown unchecked for over a year....so they are relatively big. If it's not raining tomorrow I'm going to get that done!

Beautiful young shaped trees but my problem is older, neglected trees. Does anyone have a link for how to renovate/rehabilitate apples and pears?

Hello Mike, Ron from Show Low Az. I have a question. What kind of grass seed did you use around your fig orchard ? Looks great !
I need to do something similar . I’ve got 40 acres of desert dirt .
    Thanks Mike . 👍

We used a horse pasture mix. It's a very aggressive mix of grasses and grows strong. We have to mow it more frequently but it really gets established well and crowds out most other weeds. I love the stuff but you better be committed to mowing, lol

I think you need a different variety of pears flowering at the same time for a good fruit

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 роки тому

These all flower at the same time and are known cross pollinators. I think the main issue is that they just take longer to develop.

After you get good at using that you're going to have to bring it down to Texas so we can do some massive changes of the property just for fun at my house lol I want to make a 900 ft tunnel from my house to my garden hahaha

Here goes nothing. Hopefully I don't have the same problems. The last iphone edited video made me look green, lol.
