Mike I'm with you. My thing is for example. I drove by a ladies house that had these great Japanese irises. I live near her and had noticed they weren't blooming as well because they were compact. So I pull up and tell here they have gotten to compact and if she would let me me I would separate them and make them go all out again all I want is the plants I remove. 3 hours later I have the garden dug up plants separated and 3 50 gallon bags full of plants. Long story short. I planted me a small patch put the rest in #1 pots and sold then for 5 bucks a peice at a local flee market. 1200 dollars less than 8 hours work and cost involved was 66 cents per pot.
I've been preaching that since the pandemic this is the best time in history to make money there is just so many opportunities out there and some of them you might have to give up your time in the beginning but in the end is where you make the payoff you can't have an excuse and good good going on your end
We divide and share plants with everyone we know. Heirloom iris, spring bulbs, hostas, lavender, blacked Susan's, ground covers. We never thought to pot them and sell them. -John's wife p.s. I'd love some wild blueberry plants and so would many people we know! Buying them reasonable or trade.
Mike. Those people that leave negative comments are just simple minded. You could give them $1million dollars and they still wouldn't be happy but they really want more. Your videos are just AWESOME....keep up the awesome work.
I am proof it works. I've been watching a similar channel and yours for a total of 10 years. I didn't believe it was possible either, but a few years ago after my parents passed (I'd been living with them, and caring for them), I took a chance and started propagating plants a little at a time on a backyard area no larger than 30'x4'. One example, I got a non-patented hydrangea, and took approximately 100 cuttings over two years and have propagated those plants too. I also have bought arborvitae at the end of the summer and propagated from those cheap trees. I got at least 100 starts from one tree. I can turn them for $6-7 a plant. I plan to start selling next year, and I have about 3,000 plants to start out. This has all been in my spare time, no heavy lifting, and some soil, pots, and fertilizer. I'm 63. I don't have a greenhouse. It's my retirement business. You just have to be creative and a little crazy plant lady. All thanks to you and the other guy...Mike n Mike. 💜 ...oh, I live in Missouri.
Keep going Mike, you’re doing great! You’re so right. I closed a successful retail business to go full time here at my backyard nursery. Did I mention I will turn 62 this year. I’ve got around 4500 plants on roughly half and acre. No greenhouse. No high tunnel. No employees. My first sale was strawberry plants that I started from runners last year. Sold $1500 in one day so far. My total cost for them was under $50. I know of thousands of small growers who are successful. It’s a state of mind. That’s why dreams put into action are so important. Thank you for everything you do and share with us.
Good video to address these issues. People can start where they are with available space they have. Love how you've built your buisness. you could start small and grow as you go. I've recently discovered using plastic milk jugs like it's own greenhouse to start plants indoors or outdoors. Recycle plastic containers, bird seed, pet food bags like grow bags, garbage bags even, buckets, cardboard boxes ect. Instead of everyone talking about climate change, we should all plant a tree or a forest. It's nature's gift and design to use carbon dioxide and give us oxygen in return. Planting trees are the best thing we could ever do for our climate, wildlife and ourselves. -John's wife
Thanks to you, I got hooked on plant propagation as a hobby last year. It still is. Neighbors offered to buy some of my hydrangeas as they liked them. Then, friends of theirs wanted to buy more. By fall whatever rooted cuttings I kept for myself, the rest were sold. I won’t make a business out of this as it’s strictly a hobby. But now I have people (friends of friends of neighbors) calling asking if I’ll have more hydrangeas this year. And I kept it simple. Make my own pots out of plastic bottles/containers I find thrown on the street. My growing media is whatever gravel, sand, moss, etc… I pick from around. It’s fun. But this year will keep more of my rooted cuttings for my own landscape. That was the original idea anyways :) Thanks for all you do!
Mike, I’m new to your videos, and LOVE LOVE LOVE each & every one of them! You’re so straightforward and considerate when explaining the “how to’s” of planting, propagation and selling for money. Even the way you addressed negative comments was encouraging. Anyways, I’m 62, retired and disabled, and just planting my first veggie garden, to pass the days. Totally out of my comfort zone! But you have taught me so much with your videos, it’s now more than just a way to pass time. Now it’s a passion! I even propagated a blueberry plant. I spent $15.00 on it at Lowes. A branch broke off when I brought it home. I stuck it in the ground to see what happened. Later I saw your video and slapped my head! I should have used root stimulator!!! However the silly thing is putting on a new shoot from the top of it. If I can I want to sell it & get my $15.00 back! You’re AMAZING! Now, I’m thinking about selling cedar trees. They’re growing wild all over the place. A few months back, I told my daughter that we should dig them up and replant them where they would get more sunshine, water and fertilizer and they’d take off. They’re just beautiful trees, but not growing fast. The question then was, “Then what?” I shrugged my shoulders. NOW that I’ve seen your video on selling them, I’m thinking I could sell them! What a wonderful idea you gave me! Thanks for your contagious enthusiasm!
So cool Beth! Sounds like you're on your way. I've done the same thing with cedar trees and they're valuable trees. One year I potted up a random cedar tree at my place and put it in the hoop house. Then a guy came out to my place to put gutters on my shop and noticed the cedar tree. He paid me 10 bucks for a little tree I had just potted up and It wasn't even for sale. That's how easy it is.
This is a good topic. ;) My backyard nursery is about a year in and so far I'm just planting and propagating trees by the thousands and trying to learn as much as possible. Hoping it what I can do going into retirement ten years from now, who knows but everything I hear about the market / industry for plants is super encouraging.
Great video Mike. Some people want everything handed to them. I seriously thought about doing this but I have other projects on my plate right now. I have followed your propagation videos and have successfully grown a cutting of a rose my daughter gave to my wife and a pink valerian that the bees and butterflies love. I love all the free stuff I get from Craigslist, too. There aren't a lot of free pots right near me, right now, but I did set up a search and I get notified when a listing comes up. Update: I posted in a local Facebook gardening group that I was looking for nursery pots. 3 people responded and I now have all the pots I need and the best part is they were all FREE! Thanks Mike
Thanks Mike...am 72 and still get inspired , energized and have dreams....never too later to start, over and over and over again...life can be great, just grab ahold of of it.
Hey Mike, I have been watching your videos for a few years now and I have learned SO MUCH from your channel. I have really gotten into propagation and have had quite a bit of success especially in the year or so after much trial and error. I don’t sell what I grow and really I don’t want to I think it would ruin it for me. I do it because I love it and it is satisfying. When I give a friend or family member something I grew and babied from a little cutting it means so much more than just picking it up at a store for $10. And then to see it years later big and mature in the landscape it really makes me proud to know I created that. No matter what you do there is always going to be negative people dumping on it you have to just walk right past Debbie Downer. Keep up the great videos and don’t change a thing. I know what you say works I have proved it many times
I am kind of like you i love plants and i have a plant that is a cutting of a 70 year old Hoya that i have gotten 8-9 cuttings off of so far, and more to come. I give it to people as gifts.. the arboretum has them too they are near 30-50$ for just a 5" tall cutting in a 3"pot.. i give away a 12 to 24 inch plant in a 5"square pot with hand made bamboo lattice for it to grow up on.. i also found that it is quite satisfying to find out that my near by nursery is willing to give me money for well done plants. the knowing that MY plant will live on with so many copies of itself out in the world and be handed down because they can live that long is what keeps me going. you take pride in your work and that is good but don't be scared to get payed for your works of art they are most likely worth it.
It is not that I am afraid to get paid for my work. For me when money gets involved I get REAL SERIOUS about it. Now I propagate things I want to when I want to. If I made it about making money I would turn it into what makes the most money what are the profit margins blah blah blah. I get really business minded when money is involved and now I do it for the love of doing it.
Thanks Mike, learned how to do cuttings from your videos. Sometimes it’s not about making money, it’s about trying something new. What you do with it is up to them.
Here in Canada lemon, lime and orange trees cost $100+. 😎😎😎 there are youtube vids on how to start these plants from seeds you get from fruit in the grocery store. Those would take a few years to grow but like your quote said , the time passes anyways. So cool!! Ive grown avocado trees from avocado pits. There is always something you can grow/make and sell!
Forget the negative mike life is too short for all that. Like you said they are limiting themselves. You have done it. I have saved all my nursery pots I buy them used. Everything takes time. And we mustn't forget that was 1 type ofplant for $500 well have you only been to a nursery with 1 plant?? Life is too short for all that negative nonsense. Your my hero mike I've been working at a garden center for over a year I am working on starting my own nursery all thanks to you mike. You showed me anything is possible and this goal is achievable!you have tough me alot of what I know about propagation and keeping nice plants. Thanks for everything mike keep it up!
Ask gardeners or landscapers for pots, I've collected countless pots from my clients and usually end up throwing away. Also love your bootstrap mentality!
Thanks again Mike. I am working through some issues to get my Nursery rolling. Right now I only have about 1/8 of an acre to work on, but have figure that there is enough room for at least 5,000 1 gallon pots along with some designated propagation areas and compost and soil storage. My biggest challenge is working out time to work on it. I have tested the waters with a couple ads and each one has had some success. Enough to prove the concept. I continue to do something each day, even if it means sowing seeds in trays at midnight. I love watching your videos and they help inspire me to keep going and keep experimenting.
Hey Michael, I grow on around a quarter acre and I have alot of structures on the property so theres really only around and eighth acre of useable are for me too and what I've found is the best way to do things is, with larger plants like figs I grow them in the ground and I take cuttings and use solo cups and than I sell the rooted cuttings as plants and that way the bigger plants grow really big from being in the ground and produce hundreds of new plants a year per a single fig tree and those figs you can sell for $10 a plant and it's a good deal for you and the buyer but the main crop I grow is alpine strawberries which are clumping and produce yellow amazing tasting and fragrant strawberries and one single strawberry plant will clump into 25 plants every six months and they get hundreds of flowers on the clumped plants and so I started with $10 of alpine strawberry seeds and 99% germinated and I divided the seedlings into solo cups to let them get somewhat big so I could transplant them in the ground and I started off planting them about a foot apart but they dont need that much space and leaving that much space leaves room for weeds to grow but from those seeds I got around 200 plants and I decided to post on Facebook the plants for for sale for $2 a piece and in only a day, so many people wanted them I didn't have enough to sell so I set aside my 50 best looking plants to plant in my garden and sold the rest and in 6 months those 50 plants clumped and became around 1200 plants that needed to be separated so that they could each clump up in less than 6 months again each becoming another 25 plants per a single plant I started with and I sell them when their in a clump of 25 with 200+ flowers/fruit on them for only $5 a piece and it's like an infinite money source and not only that I've found that theres no other plant that people want to buy more than strawberrys cause they can be grown In Lil to no space or in containers or in the ground and they do amazing but not only that 99% of people have never heard of alpine strawberries so everyone wants them plus they taste and smell way better than normal strawberries and yield hundreds of times the berries in a season per plant that a garden strawberry would and also I started when I was 17 and now I'm 22 and I had taken I huge break from my garden/farm because of stresses of life like deaths in the family and having trouble paying the mortgage on our house making me worry I was gonna lose the farm but last year I got back into it better than ever before and in the last 6 months I've done more than I did in the last few years and I have over 10,000 strawberry plants now and I had went years without needing or watering and let tons die and if I didnt move them like 8 months ago than alot more would've been killed by the weeds which were completely engulfing the strawberry plants and now I've moved all but like a hundred plants and covered my old strawberry beds in plastic to kill the weeds for Good and I had made a super nice looking landscaped area before moving the strawberrys so now I have this perfect ground cover area with all sorts of berries growing and figs and the ground cover is all strawberry plants planted close enough that they fully fill the area like a carpet to where no weeds can grow beetween them like before and it looks absolutely amazing with perfectly contouring Lil trails beetween the strawberrys and along the trails theres raspberry plants and snowbank white black berrys and Logan berries and cherry guavas and hardy kiwis and I have probably 20 different varieties of raspberries and I get them litterily all times of the year but in the rainy season the berries never really ripen fully cause they get moldy from the rain before they ripen but my garden this year is like no garden I've ever seen and I couldnt be any happier with it and the strawberry plants all started flowing after transplanting them to the better area with no weeds and so I already have tons of berries and the plants all look healthier than ever right now and everyone who sees it compliments me and I already have had people telling me they want to buy strawberry plants once I'm selling them again and I dont plant on selling them till my whole property is covered in strawberry plants and when I'm at that point I'm going to take the best plants and breed them so that my seeds will get better and better and the plants being baught will keep being replaced by better and better plants!
Oh yeah also I have 7 alpine varieties at the moment and the combo of those produce fruit all year and the rain doesnt ruin them but it makes them taste like apples so their not very good during the rainy parts of the year but the drier parts of the year their absolutely amazing! And I ordered over 20 different rare varieties that got lost in the mail like 6 months ago other wise I would already have nearly 30 alpine strawberry varieties but instead I still only have the 7 I started with but I plan to order the seeds again once they are in stock!
@@GoldenBoy-et6ofNot a single period was used in that entire novel haha. I'm impressed by your progress in multiplying your strawberries though! It's inspiring. 🤝
Absolutely true! When something seems overwhelming, we need to concentrate on the baby steps which set the wheels of success in motion. The $500 per hour is absolutely possible. Although, it will not happen every hour and that's where a lot of folks fall off the wagon... Keep up the good work, Mike...
It would be interesting to see just how far a person could take this. I sit here with a calculator and imagine what it would take to actually keep that going for 40 hours a week. That would be $80,000 a month. It would take a tremendous amount of work, advertising, and ingenuity, plus a little help from my wife and kids. I wonder if it's possible. Even if the in pocket at the end of the month was just $20,000. Winner winner chicken dinner!
@@MikeKincaid79 , Go for it buddy! The imagination can accomplish overwhelming odds if only we put it to use. 80K per month would be awesome. But as you stated above, it would take a lot of work. Of course, space to store the finished product may be a limiting factor for others however, if you are like me, space isn't an issue. I'm looking at trying to pop out 120K per acre. Keep running the calculator and see what else you come up with! All the best...
I really appreciate all your videos. I haven’t started selling plants, but I started propagating because of you and that alone has saved me a LOT of money!! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge!!
So awesome to hear! Yes, it saves a ton of money just doing it for your own backyard. I've created a beautiful landscape with close to 1000 rhododendrons that I could have never paid for. Most of them were cuttings from my mother plants.
Agreed! We set our own limits. I chose to not listen to those people who tell me I can't, they don't know me, they don't get to chose for me. Rock on with your bad self!
You have motivated this 66 yr old lady into trying. Been wanting to start something to make a little 💰💰💰 old folks can learn so much from you kids…. Thanks
I tried a load of fruit seeds last year with the idea of planting out an acre or so in the future. Potted on the seedlings last week in 2L pop bottles sourced from a mate who drinks gallons of lemonade. I used a mix of native soil, compost and perlite, all of which I had to hand. I know folk say not to grow fruit from seed as you are not sure what you will get, but I have not had to invest any money and could potentially have a few hundred trees in a few years. I grow comfrey to make my own fertilizer and make compost. Yes, I am doing this as the land is available, but folk can definitely do something on a small scale without spending a fortune.
My hubby and I love your videos!! You’re energy is a beautiful thing!! We love your enthusiasm about all things plants. We have learned so much from and have put what we’ve learned into practice at our forever home in NC!! We have big visions for our 3.5 acres and that will take time. We are 52 years old and are very well aware of the time it’ll take to accomplish it all. But that’s the joy of it…❤️
That's so cool Joy! I felt a rush of excitement just reading this because you're in the same boat as me and we constantly think of all the things we want to do here. You have the same vision mindset, you see your place as it will be 10 years from now.
Yeah, Mike. It's like when I start tomato plants indoors and can't get them outside because the temps are too cold. The plants get cut back to keep them under the lighting and the cuttings go into little 8oz drinking cups to be rooted. Well, twenty cups later it's finally time to get my larger plants into the garden and then I give away the best rooted cuttings and plant the remainder in empty spots. Those rooted cuttings could be sold and that's what many people will do. The complainers you spoke about would rather burn that bridge when they come to it rather than simply crossing the bridge, lol.
I'm planning to retire from my cubicle as soon as I'm eligible to. A little nursery is definitely one of the ventures I'll be embarking on. Can't wait to have a booth at the plethora of farmers markets in our area.
Just stumbled upon your videos. I watched part 1 and liked it - watched part 2 and I was in love. You're clearly a passionate person. I understand your frustration with the people who think everything is impossible without first having this or that, but you're talking to a wall. Those people are so scared of the first step, the commitment, whatever, that they have shut out any possible way to generate revenue other than their 9-5 grind. Anyone with an ounce of determination and creativity can start building a nursery or just transplant some trees. Hell, take some cuttings when you get new growth and start a new generation.
You share a passion and most here love it, as well. With only 1-1/2 acres, I made a nice living in garden market. But, from early spring into winter, it was intensive; it was something that I loved and never lost the love of. Today I give fruit and other produce away.
Love what you do And the way you consistently have new videos It's always hard starting up But, same methods can be used for other start ups Our area is saturated with backyard growing Sales are very hard Still, free plants into money is good My herbs have gone hog wild So I will sell the volunteers. Free plants
You always inspire me and more than usual this time, your right, time will pass anyway so do what makes you happy and makes you money!!! I have started selling my plants and people love them. You have made me such a happy person and I thank You so much.
Awesome video Mike! I am in the process of building my own greenhouse for the first time. It’s a homemade model, but I would love to start selling some plants on a small scale! You truly have inspired me
Go for it! Start small and prove the concept to yourself. After you make your first 20 bucks you'll be amazed and want to replicate it. Then just grow from there.
@@MikeKincaid79 …. You taught me how to propagate roses and hydrangeas etc… now I need you to teach us how to propagate conifers! 😃 and evergreens in general. Those are the hard things to find around where I live. Everyone sells annuals and hanging baskets. But I have to order all my conifer trees and shrubs online. Keep up the great work. We all appreciate you! 🦋🐝🌹🌸❤️
Hey great video. I watched the first one and it was really interested. I just turned 25 and started doing this myself last year. Living in an apartment there are still ways to do this people! metal rack, grow lights, and I just this week picked up a grow tent since I"m doing it in my room since I have roommates! It really doesn't take much besides maybe some patience. And don't forget now is the time you can go to a nursery pick up plants, and even resell them when they get a bit bigger. I'm working with tomato plants, a bunch of habanero seedlings, monstera seeds I just sowed, I have asclepias seedlings in my fridge for cold stratification right now, I just picked up a couple succulents that I can resell when they get bigger if I want to. I have coneflowers germinating, a mexican buckeye that I just saw the seed opened and I need to get it repotted so it can germinate. I have all sorts of seeds. I'll admit growing inside has it's struggles since I have no porch really, but I just got a community garden plot for $95 for the year. Being in Texas I can move those plants to the garden plot from the grow tent and dig them up whenever I want to resell them. Is it instant cash, no? But am I giving value to any customer I have, you better believe it!
Most of us (at least I am) are here to learn and be inspired, not to copy and Naysay. People will always find the negative in everything, and I feel sad for them. After your last video I did one simple google search and found a source for seedling trees (not as good of a deal as you got, but still less than $1.50 per tree). While watching this, simple Facebook marketplace search came up with 5 people in a 30 mile radius with pots. Am I totally jealous of everything you’ve got going on? Absolutely! I also know I’m just getting started and you’ve been doing it for years. One day, I know I’ll be where you are no matter how daunting it looks right now.
You've got this! Don't think in matters of time, like it will take you a certain amount of years to achieve something. Think in a matter of what you have to get done to achieve it. Then the faster and more efficiently you work, the faster you get there.
Lowe’s here puts out the pots people bring back for recycling for free. I put out all my extra veggies with a coffee can and let people make a donation if they want. The only concern I would have selling plants online would be get a live plant license and getting approved by each state. Some people get around this by just selling cuttings.
The box stores here in Canada take back empty pots for recycling. If you go to the garden centres at box stores and ask, they are usually pretty good at letting you have them as long as you don’t make a mess they have to clean up.
I've been wanting to do this for a few years. And I think I will start this year because I'm already starting a different business. I collect acorns and pine cones and other things. Lots of cuttings. All for me because I like bonsai. But I'm going to run out of space eventually but if I can sell them, I get a bit of pocket money and I can keep another obsession going and be happy.
i watch your videos alot very educating.I live in south africa and started a home based nursery last year to make a extra income and it is going very well. And it does not take alot afford or cost alot of money to start
In my area (NC) the landscape suppliers sell something called "probase" which is the common nursery potting medium or a soil conditioner here. It's basically aged fine pine bark.
Thank you for all your inspirational and educational videos! I really enjoy watching and listening to you - always great advice! You've inspired me to get at hoop greenhouse and to start grafting apple trees :) Much love from Denmark!
Mike, I'm 70 this year. I'm contemplating beginning a backyard nursery! 70 ain't that old. Gardening brings me so much joy. Earning money doing something you love isn't work! I'll let you know how my plans develop!
I think that's a fantastic plan Pat! I think a lot of people get hung up on thinking they have to start a huge business with employees and the like. Not the case at all. Just pick a plant that you love working with, see if there's a market in your area, set aside a small area in your yard for propagating and growing them, and start selling right out of your home.
im absolutely inspired by your videos, ive learned so much about growing and youtube videos(i have my own channel as well) and your flowing of ideas is definatelly going to help me in the very near future with my side hustle. i also try to encourage people with very little room to grow that they can do this even with limited space. grow smaller sell quicker and do what you can not what you can are my mottos. cheers mike cant wait for the next video
Mike, You Got THis!!!!! To the kind and gracious people that shared their unneeded negativity... I am currently rooting nearly 200 green giants that are currently taking up less space than a 20in.by 20in piece of my back yard and can stay that way for a whole year while i find those free 1 gal. pots. Heck you could even get a bag of play sand leave it in the bag. Lay the bag flat cut the upside of the flat bag and BAM!!! you have a starter for rooting cuttings. Some people are so closed off from the realities we live in and because of this and the absents of some other key reality's is what keeps people from achieving what was already decided for them. Well got to get back to the makeshift green house and cut some Solo cups so I can start my garden veggies. Cheers and Blessings from mine to yours Martin
Great video! I have gathered Sawtooth acorns and potted them for years. I enjoy seeing the change from acorn to tree. I also believe in planting for the future. Now i am thing of making money. Thanks Mike!
I like your videos and live in portland, OR. I really like the fact we can propagate these plants that a nursery can charge $50-$100 a pop. Living in the city those green giants are necessary to keep a private backyard.
You know Mike, today I was feeling a bit fed up because I'm thinking 'oh my chillis won't grow, and when they do I won't be able to sell them', but you gave me hope. Tanks for that!
Great videos, and very informative This is my plan for down the road as a seasonal retirement income. For a few years now I have been slowly building up my mother plant supply of snake plants, jade, spider, wondeing jew plus a few others to do cuttings from in the future. I sell some, potted rooted cuttings off at local flea markets for now til the time comes to expand varity including outdoor plants in my retirement.
A title like that attracts people who want to get rich quick. To be successful at anything takes perseverance, commitment and hard work. I really like your video's by the way. Just found your channel the other day and subscribed right away. ~Russ
Thanks for the sub, Russ. Very true. In hindsight, the title is a little glamorous, lol. I make these videos for a specific audience of people who have been following me for a long time and ask for these videos. I just don't realize how far reaching the videos will go and eventually I start getting rif raf in here that have no imagination. I should probably stop addressing it altogether. Welcome to the family, thanks for being here, and glad you enjoy the videos. Much more to come.
This guy can sell ice to Eskimo keep up the good work don't worry about the haters people always going to be looking for a way not to do something it's what what's their excuse today is is all there looking for just keep making a videos I'm glad I found you keep it up
O yea I tell everyone about your channel over here in the UK. I recycle old unwanted greenhouses and make bespoke greenhouses from the aluminium and sell bits and the excess glass. I send everyone your links because I say If you want to grow go watch the pro 😁👌👍
I'm retired and love gardening. Growing vegatables takes time and money. I found a way to make all the money I need to get supplies and have extra money for other things. I started propagating fig trees 3 years ago. I went from selling 20 to 40 to 60 and now this year it's going to be over a 100. If all the trees sold at my minimum which is $20 a tree thats $2000. But I also grow specialty fig trees that are worth from $50 to over a 100. And around half the trees I sell of those. So it's well over $2000. I planted 30 cuttings yesterday took me about 2 hours. At my minimum that would be $600. But half those trees will be going for $40 or more. Each cutting costs me less than $2 per plant that includes the soil and the pot. 90% of the trees I grow now are from my own trees so no money spent buying cuttings. I make my own fertilizer so its only costing me pennies. The rest of my time is spent advertising and shipping which is minimal. I've made a lot of new friends learned a lot about soil, fig trees and gardening more than I have in the last 40 years. Although I probably could make this into a small business I just want it as a hobby with benefits.
Sounds like you've got a nice little setup there. Yeah, those figs can go for some serious money. I don't sell too many figs but I did sell a Black Madeira KK in a dixie cup (newly rooted) for $350 bucks a few years ago. Crazy.
@@MikeKincaid79 Are you kidding me. Someone paid $350? Was it an auction? I just ordered some black madeira KK. I've been selling figo preto so it was pretty similar. But people were asking for the black maderia. I just ordered 2 cuttings 1 tree I'll keep the other one ill sell. The one tree i sell will pay for the cuttings and then some. And hopefully by the end of the season I'll have enough to take a couple more cuttings.
Yep, absolutely true, I couldn't believe it. It was an auction I had listed on Figbid. In fact, it was the little Black Madeira KK plant that I featured in the first packaging video I did about 3 or 4 years ago when I shipped it all the way to Connecticut. During that same auction someone else bid it up to $500 but then a day or 2 later he contacted me and said it was an accident. Kind of screwed up the auction and put a bad taste in my mouth for auctions. I know they work and I've sold them by auction several times but when someone begs you to take their name off and says it was an accident, what are you going to do? I'm a nice guy and not money hungry and I thought it was too much anyway. It just screws it up for the other people. Since that period of time a few years ago, it seems the price of BMKK has come down but it's still just about one of the hottest figs to get, and for good reason.
i do that all the time with small fruit bushes , they sell really easy on marketplace , it's a nice way to make a bit more money at the end of the mont !
I started my garden 3 seasons ago and I have people asking me all the time if I will be selling my plant starts or harvest. I haven't yet but there is certainly a ton of interest from people in plants. A little time and effort goes a long ways. We are only limited by the limitations we place on ourselves.
You can always go into the inspirational talk circuit if this nursery thing doesn't pan out for you. Curiously though that was a really good video. Thanks Mike
I love your enthusiasm... I wish I could get some advice. Propagation is fun. But it is all about patience and timing. Where can you find those seedlings? Love love your channel.
I found these advertised on Facebook Marketplace. You can also look on Craigslist for your area. Wayerhauser also does an annual sale of their seedlings right about this time of year if you check there website.
I truly believe that "Where there is a Will there is a Way!" yep you can accomplish anything .. you have to want it , if you don't then your gonna come up with a bunch of excuses to why you cant ..I was thinking of starting a bunch of Peppers (hot and sweet) and seeing how many I can sell .. 🌱
Yes, do it! Take steps today while you're fired up about it. Did you see the pepper video I did last winter where I sold a bunch of them for profit? There is definitely a market.
Hi Mike. Awesome video. You can only plant seeds in those negative minds but they will always put up roadblocks. You can only try to help, at some stage they have to get off their asses, and help themselves. I am 65 soon. I am going to do this with plants I have available in my own garden. Plant barns also have free used pots and Autumn is a great time to start in NZ. Don't let the knockers knock you down. Keep safe 😃
Hi Mike. How about changing the title to How To Make $500 Dollars In an Hour. Your channel works well because you work your channel by responding to your responders😄
Love your outlook. Love your channel. Love the knowledge you share. How does one search for bulk, bare-root trees (or other bare-root plants)? Are there certain words I should be using or places I should be looking?
We fond these on Facebook Marketplace. It was just a private individual selling them. He had ordered too many for his property. You can also order them through Weyerhaeuser. No sure where you live but there are a few nurseries around here who sell all kinds of native trees in bulk. Good luck and thanks for hanging out on the channel with us.
I visited our neighborhood retail greenhouse in December 2022 and opened a double door into a large rear space that normally holds all their annual plants. They had 6 inch poinsettia starts in there, hundreds and hundreds of them in 6" pots. They were about 6 inches tall. I asked and she told me they do all this propagation themselves. I know how much I spend on poinsettia plants in December - $29 - $49. What I saw was how greenhouses are goldmines. Not to mention what a happy environment to work in. Trolls are going to troll comments. Negative Nancy's have had bad past experiences. You do you!
Love it! Thanks for the uplifting comment. Yes, it's amazing how much money rolls through some of these nurseries. Money truly does grow on trees, lol.
Also, regarding those that poo poo the idea of how much time it would take to do some of these things: I think it’s important to stay in the vibration of what you do want in life. What dreams do you want to chase and one day realize. I went from living on a hobby farm to a tiny apartment, due to a change in marital status. But the next spring, I still started a few hundred veg seeds because I wanted to continue doing what I Love. It was nice to give them away. Free at surprised a lot of people. It’s not always about the money, but it should always be about the Dream ✨
Mike- love your videos- I told my kids about this years ago (our area is red and white pine, some tamarack) to do this and the hourly is impressive……they would rather work with friends at McDonalds, sad. This year I tried 7gal bags for my 4 yr old transplants. Pine are great but lost 50 sugar maple and white pine to rabbits. I fenced in from deer but forgot about peter rabbit, lol
Thank you- much inspired! Watched part 1 also. Great ideas- easily doable. So many may not want to put in the little effort required, but those people will buy them from you :-)
Loved watching these videos I’m definitely subscribing love you positivity and can say you are giving me the forward push to the direction I was already heading in! Thanks
I am really hoping to give some of this a try. With any luck a good number of the Dawn redwood seeds I’ve planted will sprout this year, and that will kick things off. The real stinker is that I want to try all sorts of trees this way. 😆 Even have some Paperbark maple and Black Locust seeds that will get planted this week. White pine might be fun.
There ya go, now you're getting those creative juices flowing. You can do this with all kinds of plants. I'd love to hear if the Dawn Redwood seeds take. Love that tree.
LOLS i did that with a peace lily and made some money. Am curently brewing cuttings of all my other indoor plants to sell. It's totally doable bit by bit.
Love this video. Ty very much. Will you do a video on plant and tree details? Example: Hardiness zones for the Douglas fir, full pt shade or full sun and size growth. Also, I’m interested in laurels. Will you go through the differences in the laurel varieties. I’m interested in the English Laurel you propagated. Planting zones, evergreen, size growth and sun requirements. That would be really helpful for me. TY❤
Awesome video and love the motivation! And I agree that maybe a $100 the first sale will not be life changing, BUT if you invest that 100 back into it and buy more starter plants and supplies the next sale might be $400. Do this over and over and boy will it add up it time.
Well Mike I a not sure how anyone can look at your suggestion negatively, Since what your proposing is really on a small scale for people to do things in their spare time to make a bit of extra cash. Its not a get rich quick scheme its just a way in my opinion to take your suggestions and apply it to their skills to make a little extra money. Thanks for great Videos keep them coming.
18:02 made me LOL and then I realized it's actually advice I needed! 😄 Good follow-up vid. You are def my fave youtuber, Mike!
That means a ton, thanks Jonathan!
Ralph, that story is the epitome of what I'm trying to explain here. Perfect example of what's possible! Thank you for sharing your story.
Love this story!
Love the uplifting comment Jim. You're the kind of guy that's going places!
because a comment may challenge a premise, it doesn't make the comment negative, nor the viewer simple minded.
That's so cool to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience and good luck with your sales!!!
That's great! Good luck!
I’m 66 and started learning about a year ago
This would be a fun job/hobby to earn a little money
@@legauxmc it's where my heart wants to be, working with my plants.
@@legauxmc awesome! You can do it Maria!
THOUSANDS😊
Wow Kathie! That is such an inspiring story and I loved reading it. Thanks for sharing and have fun in the garden!!!
Awesome!
I love reading these inspiring stories. good for you! can I ask where you sourced your bulk containers?
I agree 100%. Too much talk and blame going around and not enough action.
That was the original idea anyways :)
Thanks for all you do!
It's so cool when people are beating down your door for plants, haha. You must be doing something right. Thanks for sharing!
i love it "ya just gotta find the plant you love... and start!" that is pure gold
Glad you enjoyed it, Thomas!
The reason I subscribe is because I like how you start taking excuses away during your teaching thanks
Happy to inspire. Thanks for being here Ricky!
This is a good topic. ;) My backyard nursery is about a year in and so far I'm just planting and propagating trees by the thousands and trying to learn as much as possible. Hoping it what I can do going into retirement ten years from now, who knows but everything I hear about the market / industry for plants is super encouraging.
Plants are like a retirement account that just keeps growing.
Thanks Mike
So cool to hear you were successful with your daughter's rose cutting!
Thanks Mike...am 72 and still get inspired , energized and have dreams....never too later to start, over and over and over again...life can be great, just grab ahold of of it.
I love your attitude!
So cool to hear you're successful with multiplying your plants and having fun doing it. All the best Dale, and thanks for the comment!
I don't want damn piece lilies allover my living room lol
Thanks Mike, learned how to do cuttings from your videos. Sometimes it’s not about making money, it’s about trying something new. What you do with it is up to them.
Yes, that's it! Thanks for hanging out here and glad you're learning.
Absolutely!
That’s so cool to hear. Thanks for sharing that with me and I wish you all the success in the world.
Native plants FTW!! 💚🙌🏽
Ask gardeners or landscapers for pots, I've collected countless pots from my clients and usually end up throwing away. Also love your bootstrap mentality!
Yep, that's another great idea! Boostrapping is what it's all about. Thanks for watching, Julian.
Your, multiple months of results in one video videos, are the reason your my new favorite. Keep it up Mike.
I'm honored, thanks Chris!
Keep doing what you love. "The time will pass anyway."
When you say you can, you can
When you say you can’t , you’re right

I wish I could like this video more than just once.
Wow, plants I love thanks for telling...👏
Haha, love it Paula!
Love your enthusiasm, passion, and great inspiring ideas! Keep it up!
You have motivated this 66 yr old lady into trying. Been wanting to start something to make a little 💰💰💰 old folks can learn so much from you kids…. Thanks
Haha, glad to hear you're going to give it a shot. Just start small and sell one thing for 5 bucks. You can do it Maria! Then grow from there.
LOL, yes that's true. I love how you keep multiplying your tomatoes until it's time to go outside.
You get it!
You share a passion and most here love it, as well. With only 1-1/2 acres, I made a nice living in garden market. But, from early spring into winter, it was intensive; it was something that I loved and never lost the love of. Today I give fruit and other produce away.
That is awesome!
Love what you do
And the way you consistently have new videos
It's always hard starting up
But, same methods can be used for other start ups
Our area is saturated with backyard growing
Sales are very hard
Still, free plants into money is good
My herbs have gone hog wild
So I will sell the volunteers. Free plants
Thanks, I appreciate your support! Good luck selling your herbs.
You always inspire me and more than usual this time, your right, time will pass anyway so do what makes you happy and makes you money!!! I have started selling my plants and people love them. You have made me such a happy person and I thank You so much.
Good for you Glenda! So glad that you're enjoying your plant passion.
Phenomenal speech of professional salesman ❗️
Awesome video Mike! I am in the process of building my own greenhouse for the first time. It’s a homemade model, but I would love to start selling some plants on a small scale! You truly have inspired me
Go for it! Start small and prove the concept to yourself. After you make your first 20 bucks you'll be amazed and want to replicate it. Then just grow from there.
@@MikeKincaid79 …. You taught me how to propagate roses and hydrangeas etc… now I need you to teach us how to propagate conifers! 😃 and evergreens in general.
I love hearing all that. Keep that energy going and keep up the good work Spencer!
$95 bucks for a year at the community garden!!?? We have one locally and never knew how it worked! I'm going to go ask:))
@@MikeKincaid79 It can be daunting at times. I’ve got a goal and I won’t reach it if I’m not focused. Just have to keep moving forward. ☺️
Like your advice and teaching ,really inspiring me to try something I like. Thanks you Mike.
Go for it! You can do this.
Lowe’s here puts out the pots people bring back for recycling for free. I put out all my extra veggies with a coffee can and let people make a donation if they want. The only concern I would have selling plants online would be get a live plant license and getting approved by each state. Some people get around this by just selling cuttings.
"Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it."
Working on your dreams is always worth it, you end up learning so much about yourself in the process.
Absolutely! Thanks Zavia
I am inspired thank you. Never give up on your dream because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyways. Perfectly said.
The box stores here in Canada take back empty pots for recycling. If you go to the garden centres at box stores and ask, they are usually pretty good at letting you have them as long as you don’t make a mess they have to clean up.
Great point! I've seen this myself and it's a great idea for finding free pots.
That’s it man, you’re on the right mindset.
i watch your videos alot very educating.I live in south africa and started a home based nursery last year to make a extra income and it is going very well. And it does not take alot afford or cost alot of money to start
Good luck on building your nursery!
In my area (NC) the landscape suppliers sell something called "probase" which is the common nursery potting medium or a soil conditioner here. It's basically aged fine pine bark.
Perfect!
Thank you for all your inspirational and educational videos! I really enjoy watching and listening to you - always great advice! You've inspired me to get at hoop greenhouse and to start grafting apple trees :) Much love from Denmark!
Well have fun diving in Elzie and good luck on your apple grafts!
That was a really cool quote that you told me glad you shared it with everybody else.
You the man Mark!
Man I love this. This is the kind of stuff I'd love to say but can't, haha.
Great video! I have gathered Sawtooth acorns and potted them for years. I enjoy seeing the change from acorn to tree. I also believe in planting for the future. Now i am thing of making money. Thanks Mike!
Good luck on your journey Gary!
I like your videos and live in portland, OR. I really like the fact we can propagate these plants that a nursery can charge $50-$100 a pop. Living in the city those green giants are necessary to keep a private backyard.
Definitely. Green giants are nice in a neighborhood setting because they grow so tall but are more narrow than a traditional cedar.
This was a great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it.
You’ve got it! 👍
You know Mike, today I was feeling a bit fed up because I'm thinking 'oh my chillis won't grow, and when they do I won't be able to sell them', but you gave me hope. Tanks for that!
There's always hope. Glad you found it. Keep your head up Amanda and remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@MikeKincaid79 awww, thank you!
Great videos, and very informative
This is my plan for down the road as a seasonal retirement income.
Right on! Good luck in your venture and enjoy retirement.
I love your site Ignore Those negative. Comments those people are negative and limited mindset people. .. you are a star!
Hey, thanks so much DJ. Sometimes I get caught up in the garbage, but I always come back to center, thanks to people like you.
This guy can sell ice to Eskimo keep up the good work don't worry about the haters people always going to be looking for a way not to do something it's what what's their excuse today is is all there looking for just keep making a videos I'm glad I found you keep it up
Thanks for the support! I'll keep filming as long as you keep watching.
Exactly! People are so broken these days you never hear a positive word from them. :/
Yes, it's a sad state of affairs. Hopefully the sunshine I try to bring to the game will break through all the clouds.
Hello mate. Proper inspiring. Thanks 👍

O yea I tell everyone about your channel over here in the UK. I recycle old unwanted greenhouses and make bespoke greenhouses from the aluminium and sell bits and the excess glass. I send everyone your links because I say

That's it. Well put Joe!
I appreciate all the support man.
Beautifully put!
Thank you. I am from Chicago looking to retire in a few years and this is great for extra money. and a great therapeutic transition from work.
That's what it's all about Kerry. Glad you're inspired.
Damn this was a great video! I will be moving with my family onto a 5 acre lot and loved this video. That's a good quote. Thanks a lot!
Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck on your move and future plans.
Your enthusiasm gives me confidence 😀
Hi Mike, since all them potted trees are going to be put in around the fence line, you can grow more Douglas Ferns from the trimmings.😀🇦🇺
You got that right
I am always love your videos, those people that leave negative comments they are not happy people.
Hopefully I can convert a few, haha. Glad you love the videos and good to see you here!
Always inspired by your videos, Mike!
You can always go into the inspirational talk circuit if this nursery thing doesn't pan out for you. Curiously though that was a really good video. Thanks Mike
Lol, thanks!
I'm applying all of your principles while living in an apartment and using the balcony.
That's all ya need.
Keep safe 😃
Haha, love that, thanks Chris!
Hi Mike. How about changing the title to
How To Make $500 Dollars In an Hour. Your channel works well because you work your channel by responding to your responders😄
Dude, that’s a great idea. That would shut up the naysayers.
Keep up the great work. I've learned so much from you.
Glad to hear it Nora!
God bless this channel! Thank you so much for such inspiration and guidance!
keep doing what your doing man. love to watch your videos.
Also, regarding those that poo poo the idea of how much time it would take to do some of these things:
I think it’s important to stay in the vibration of what you do want in life.
Well said
Thanks for your inspiring message! Love your positive attitude.
There's always some critter I have to contend with, and it seems to be a different one every year.
I followed your Hydrangeas propagation I am totally
hooked I had success couldn’t believe it HAPPY DAYS
Godbless
Congratulations!
Thank you- much inspired! Watched part 1 also. Great ideas- easily doable. So many may not want to put in the little effort required, but those people will buy them from you :-)
I’m glad you get it, Amber. It just takes a little effort but it’s fun!
Loved watching these videos I’m definitely subscribing love you positivity and can say you are giving me the forward push to the direction I was already heading in! Thanks
You got this!
Yes it is! Good luck and have fun with it Kathy.
TY❤
I'll keep those ideas in mind.
Awesome video and love the motivation! And I agree that maybe a $100 the first sale will not be life changing, BUT if you invest that 100 back into it and buy more starter plants and supplies the next sale might be $400. Do this over and over and boy will it add up it time.
That's it exactly Bill! Thanks for weighing in.
Yep, that's it! I appreciate your understanding of what I'm preaching.
the pot joke/pun got you a new sub and a thumbs up lol
LOL, I was on a roll and had to keep going, haha
In the first part of the video in the high tunnel… What is growing behind you?
Lots of different plants, mostly rhododendrons
Glad I found your channel Mike. Thanks!
You're welcome Ryan!
