TikToker explains reason why Lululemon got its name

- Lululemon shoppers are losing it online after finding out how the athleisure brand got its name - and it's low-key offensive.
It turns out that Lululemon actually doesn't mean anything at all.
In fact, the founder of the brand, Chip Wilson, wanted it to sound 'Western' to Japanese speakers, and what's more, he wanted it to be really difficult for them to pronounce.
He previously said: "I recognised that the Japanese consumer liked a name with an L in it because the letter isn't in the Japanese language. It sounded American. So I thought if I ever have another company I am going to put three L's in it."

This isn't the real reason... The real reason is because of L being absent in Japanese language, Japanese culture at the time considered Western brands with the letter L in the name to be exotic. The creator did acknowledge it was funny to hear them pronounce it, but that wasn't the reason.

It was the reason, he is directly quoted saying "I wanted something that would be difficult for Japanese to pronounce."
That seems pretty intentional to me.
@@nadaniceguy-he did it so that you t would gain popularity in Japan as well, by having a challenging name. He wasn’t doing it do be straight up mean to the Japanese. He wanted his product to sell there too.

It was actually because the founder understood that in Japan brands with L where considered foreign and more interesting. Later he admitted that it was also a bit funny.

I thought it was a marketing stunt to make the most Western-sounding name possible, mainly bc of how popular Western companies can get in Japan. Swear my grandpa showed me a newspaper story about this when I was in elementary school or something. The whole narrative of "he did it to laugh at them" might have just been popularized by the Best Friends podcast.
