TheApostleP Not at all, I like the way in which you systematically address both the pros and cons of the piece. It's something I try to do in my own reviews :) Keep up the great work, brother!
I have all three (Sebbie, XM, SnG) as well as numerous others of higher and lower cost. I agree at times the fit (especially out of the box) is less then the Sebbie or XM, but I've had pretty good luck tuning them in to where I'm perfectly happy. I've also definitely looked at that little sliver of titanium on the one side of the pivot and wondered if it could ever fail, but I gotta say I've used my SnG's pretty hard and never had one fail (I've also never seen pictures of a failed one either). This makes me think the design is a lot stronger then that weakness may appear. I do also prefer the SnG's blade shape for all around use as well. The Sebenza's point is a little to fine for me (personally the Insingo is my favorite blade shape from CRK) and while I'm sure the XM blade is comparable in strength to the SnG, I get much nicer slices with the wider full flat grind of the SnG and find it more useful. I do greatly prefer the ergonomics of the SnG as well. She sits in the hand perfectly and you can choke up on the blade better then any other folder I've handled. I also know I reach for a Strider folder 95% of the time when picking my carry knife, which I think in the end says a lot for me personally. I've never felt under-knived or that my XM or Sebbie would of handled a task better (I have felt the reverse). I will also say I think I've seen a lot more beat up and used Strider's out there as well. I think that counts for a lot. It shows that people pick their Strider for actual use (Maybe that's just the circles I run in). I did enjoy your video and do think it was honest and fair review.
What I did to eliminate stick was use graphite on the lock face. It's been working fine for 6 months, with no slip, and no give. It stopped sticking, and dulled the metal in that one spot too, giving it an even, (in my opinion, awesome) greeted look that reduced glare. If you don't have any graphite, just take a pencil and draw over the space.
This blade have a RW-1 profile. I own several old school and msc smf and honestly , this is THE holy grail design from Mick Strider , THE RW-1 is the legendary folder kinda like the excalibur of folder for me , i sold it 10 years ago and still searching to buy another one without sucess since the last 5 years. Omega Rare !
I believe the s30v blades come out of heat treat dark colored. Then the stripes are formed by sand blasting the black heat treat finish away. Good upload!
And they can take a lot of hard use. I have beat on mine for years, 7 to be exact. No problems at all. Have cleaned fish, deer, rabbits, turtles, etc. and love it. The lock will have ZERO stick once broke in. This knife your reviewing is brand new by the looks. Definitely not broke in and has no character. If you squeeze the hell out of the hinderers lock bar like you are this knife it will stick too. I have done it.
I've had crk's and striders. Emersons, benchmades, zt's, and lots of others. Never a xm though. Not to long ago I got hooked on balisongs so I traded most of my high end folders for good bali's. Striders are the one knife I miss the most which lead me to trade one of my high end bali's to get back into an sng. I will say the pt is very small and felt like a toy to me and the smf is a beast! I loved it but it wasn't practical for my edc needs. The sng should be perfect. There's just something about strider that attracts me to them. They beg to be used. I didn't feel that with any other folder.
4 Different Striders with me and I have never seen a problem like those mentioned. They are 3 SMF and 1 SNG. Maybe you should send it to Strider and have it adjusted.
Oh, how times have changed. Strider has passed Hinderer up in terms of build quality and finishing. FWIW, I've had $1000 Shirogorovs that have the same lock problems (F95s) as shown above with this Strider. It's unacceptable in a knife above $150. The dealer (Recon1) got offended when I returned the F95 and denied that anything was wrong (I could squeeze the lock-bar all the way over towards the non-locking side. The lock would get stuck and need a tool to disengage). Now I can't buy Shiros from them, because I returned the knife for a refund. lol
OK so my take and tips coming from an owner of a new SNG; So I was lucky enough to win mine for $26 on a raffle via Instagram. First impression was this is kinda ugly, stiff as all hell, has a late lockup with about 40% of the tang left to travel and still not sure if I was going to keep it. So I did the first things I learned to help remedy issues, I disassembled not worried about messing something up since these are not complicated items, I cleaned off all the locktight, put a little graphite on the tang (it stuck like a mofo) and opened and closed the sucker a few hundred times trying to mate the lockbar and make it smoother. Well the game changer was the graphite, adjusting the pivot screw and my last resort a small amount of Froglube to the pivot washers. Wow what a drastic change in the action the lube did, I was hesitant at first but now I can finger flip this guy with such ease. In conclusion I've fallen in love with this knife and the hype is real. Don't be scared to tune them correctly and don't be weary of late lockups ( people are weird about that stuff).
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Imran Darren Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
FINALLY a video that speaks the truth about the SNG. I had read all the Striderholic stories etc. I knew just from the measurements alone that if I ever bought a Strider it'd be the SMF. I never had an SNG or any Strider for that matter in my hand. Till 5 weeks ago at a knife store I have found. I just shook my head as I held it, the owner let me walk around the store while I tried to bond with it. Ha! My T3 from DPx is EVERY BIT the knife as the SnG plus it's put together better and it's not even close. I hope when I get to handle an SmF that I am more impressed, I guess reading the stories and hearing the fellas on Bladeforums kind of painted a picture in my head. Not anymore. Now why hasn't anyone ever said what I just did on the forums? Incredible. Super vid, I subscribed. Thanks for uploading this.:-)
And this one has the "new" lock geometry that supposedly solves a lot of the problems of the old geometry (yikes :)). So if you do wanna get one, look for one with the new geometry at least. It's important to remember too that this SNG is still a pretty new knife... they are supposedly supposed to get better as they break in. It's a good knife... but Rob/TAP did a great job of laying out the pros and cons objectively.
Just picked up a new one and you absolutely nailed it - a great knife but no way worth over $400. No way! I've flipped mine about 1000 times and have been using the pencil trick on the lock and it's still sticky. I wouldn't even say it's worth $250. I'm going to say more like $175. Heck, a Sage 2 is about $180 and it is better in every way. I also own Hinderers and CRK's and they're in a completely different class. You pick up one of those and you understand why they cost as much as they do. Pick up a Strider SnG and you just stand there scratching your head.
This video stopped me from buying a Strider. I've had one before and sold it. I wanted to try one again, but I'm remembering why I didn't like it last time. The quality just isn't there for the price. I'll stick with CRK and the occasional Hinderer. At least the Strider blade steel heat treat is awesome.
Thank you so much Rob, i wanted to make a video about my SMF, and you did the job for me!!!! I AGREE ON EACH POINT!!! and mine is the SMF GG so it's $650 on the second market !!!! definitely don't worth that kind of money.... One more point you didn't notice is that the blade in closed position crosses through the lanyard hole and would cut any lanyard!!! frankly i couldn't care less since i never use lanyard on my knives, but that's not the problem!!! the issue here is that this flaw in the finish is just unacceptable for a knife of that price!!!! Now for whatever reason, i still love that knife, but i wouldn't buy another one, when i'd joyously own other hinderer or CRK....... and fortunately i do!!!!! ;)
My dear friend Rob... are you saying the Strider SNG is an "image knife"? LOL!!!! Excellent review buddy... you nailed it. The SNG is a good knife, but it most definitely has its flaws. If one can look past those it's quite a fun knife to own, but CLEARLY in the #3 spot of the Big 3! If you'll remember I came by my first Strider via a trade (for a Hinderer I had for sale) and probably wouldn't have gone out and bought one on my own initially. That said, it is an intriguing knife that has a certain character or "attitude" that I enjoy. I'll probably never sell that XM-18 you also have... or my Sebenza... but I can't say the SNG makes it into that "untouchable" category (ie, it wouldn't be one of my "Magnificent Seven" (which, btw, has grown to more than 7 now! LOL!)). But I surely do like it aplenty, despite its flaws. Anyway, once again you have laid down the seminal review for a knife. I think this is probably the most objective review of the Strider SNG yet. (BTW, I cringed and shook my head at the 26:26 mark.) ;-)
i don't mind the wasted cutting edge for the choil, you hand melts into it, feels great and its more than enough blade length for me. but if blade length in a small package is you thing you probably shouldn't consider any of this line of striders, maybe the sj-75
It's called ergonomics bud. CRK-as great as it is-isn't any where near as comfortable to hold and use. Hinderer is close-but not as comfortable. Cutting length is a critical spec of say a chef's knife-not a tactical folder and it still has plenty of cutting length.
As cool as SNG double gunner grip knives look to me, I am no closer to purchasing a Strider than I was when I started collecting knives. They feel like they're mostly hype. Zero Tolerance, Benchmade and Spyderco make products that meet or surpass the strength, quality and value of Strider knives.
ZT is going down the flipper and cool EDC road that you just take pictures of anymore. They're not build like a tank anymore with the new models. Benchmades quality has gone way down hill and spyderco had great steel, quality and designs but they feel so fragile. Striders are on the same par to me with Emersons. They're not the best quality but they just feel like a damn tool when they're in your hand and beg to be used and not just have pictures taken of them. Not speaking on behalf of their customs lol
Prices are really coming down on the Hinderer's. I have been seeing alot of them on ebay with buy it nows from $550-$625. I have my brother or Dad place my Hinderer orders, one is military one is FF/Paramedic.
I really like the blade design myself and it's different if you want a hender buy a hender if you want a strider buy a strider it all depends on what you personally want
Am I the only one who just does not see Strider as much of a tactical producer? To me a Strider (more so the smaller SNG and PT) is a great tool, a great all around fun high functioning EDC knife. If we talk completely objectively the best Strider for the money, in fact is a Spyderco Tuff, my favorite EDC. The Tuff is less expensive, much more smooth (once you put some good grease on it, the later production runs fixed the over heavy lock issues to make a glassy smooth knife), a steel insert on the lock bar eliminates any significant stick, it also is made of premium materials (G-10, 6AL4V Titanium, CPM-3V with a good heat treat), fit and finish is about the same (maybe slightly better after watching this video), and it is very over built... really it's only flaws come with the fact that it is made in Tiwan (an issue for some people) and the grind is a bit steep (the cutting performance was not too great until I put a nice high convex edge on it). Of course that is just objective and does not factor in personal appeal... I love my Tuff, but I would most likely find my self carrying the SNG more if I had one, it is just a really cool knife. I am lucky enough that I may be able to handle a SNG for a day or two in exchange for sharpening like you were in this video.
When a strider breaks in, and you use it like your supposed to, WOW. I can't keep mine out of my pocket. It gets way more pocket time than my XM and sebenza.
the code 4 is stronger and a better cutter close to the same weight thinner .it would be a way better issue knife .but who in the service gets issued striders ?
Good review, I've looked into Strider before but ultimately have decided about the same thing as you. These knives are just not worth what they sell for and the their market will eventually bottom out. That's when I'll get one...
Great review. I was on the fence and I have now made it up. That knife sounds pretty rickety and kind of crappy. I will get a sebenza instead. For me it's a better fit anyhow. Thanks again
also whats the deal with mick strider? ive just heard people say they wouldn't get into it. Im not sure whats up with him, it doesn't sound very positive
Spyderco southard. Any day insted of a SNG or SMF. And half the cost. With that said I really do like the sj75. And saw a custom one that was bigger than a SMF. That is a bad ass knife.
TheApostleP Haha. Well if you ever decide you want to try out an SNG again, i have a SNG lego green g10 3/4 ground stonewashed that is entirely too small for my hand and is basically new, id give you a killer price, as i got a good deal on it. =)
This is a terrible analysis from an other wise great reviewer. Given the age of this video I'm willing to give Rob the benefit of the doubt. Hey Rob, you should review one of the new M.Strider models a re-review and maybe look at the design with new eyes. There is a reason (good reason) for every abnormality on this knife.
I don't "beat" in that league. And.... at 400 clams, I consider that knife the anti-thesis of value. And.... I'm guessing that the snow people didn't approve and told you to not but that knife. And I agree.
I want to love tgis knife tried it three times junk junk junk.I no his customs are nice but the production version horrible.just comes with a tactical zip lock bag nothing else.I own a titanium pt wich I love but had to regrind cause it came with a cheasy ass chizel grind.if he would carbidize his locks add a liner and fix that wack ass pivot and charge only 100$ im in.his fixed blades are nice.
price not withstanding, nothing Strider or Hinderer makes, either production, or custom, can even get within a light year of a Demko AD10 in terms of strength. As for refinement, and fit and finish-well to me lock rock is a sign of poor manufacture.
Good thing I was cooking breakfast and only had this playing in the background or I would've stopped it. Good review but it honestly sounded as if you were slated against Strider as a brand before you even got that one for the review.
Probably right... Like most of us in the knife community, I don't have much love for the man behind the resume who is Mick Strider. Also, there are some general characteristics of the SNG I didn't like before I ever picked one up. However, and I think the review explains this, I do completely understand the philosophy behind the knife, and how many folks, myself included, might want one in their respective collections. I really do think it's a great "beater knife," read "hard use," but would like to see it $250 or so given its level of quality.
TheApostleP so his skeletons got drug out of the closet. If every high end knife makers skeletons got pulled out I'm sure most would be surprised. Everyone has skeletons....some more than others. I look past all that because we are all only animals. Animals do what they need to do to survive and not a single one can be completely trusted 100%, simple as that. It is what it is. Buy what you like.
+OffCamberTJ It much more than that. Mick sold his knives as the knife for operators by operators. He is a POS, regardless of how well he can use a grinder. He is much worse than only being a fraud.
I don't usually gratify comments like yours with a response, but I'm in complete disbelief on this one. Did you really tell me that the blade of a knife I sharpened, owned by a close friend who knows what he bought, is NOT really made from the steel we see stamped into the blade tang? Did you even watch the video? Rest assured that before I spend 30 minutes on a video knife review, I do my homework. By the way, to my knowledge, Strider Knives hasn't used 154CM steel any time in the recent past. They have, however, used CPM 154 in the last couple of years. This knife is not one of those.
JUST GOT MY FIRST smf so disappointed. there are much cheaper knives with way better lock geometry. why in the hell wouldn't strider swallow their pride and change it, period. and to charge 25 to fix it, and to suggest that its done on purpose because its tip up carry and that the lock stick will work itself out. yeah it will work itself right into lock rock. get over yourself strider.
Probably the same kind a people that pay 2 million for an ugly bugatti when you could've had a sexy af 200k lambo.. people are weird and it's the same when it comes to pocket knives, to each is his own.
+john smith exactly and guess what. a zt 0550 new 3rd Gen with titanium and s35 vn steel is 200 bucks.. half the price of a sebenza. all about preference I guess
I love my Strider SMF, planning to buy this SMG next. These are serious knives. They have a special feel about them I don't get from any other knives.
Always wanted to know more about this brand, thanks for the detailed and objective review!
No problem! I just hope this review didn't add to your confusion, LOL :)
TheApostleP Not at all, I like the way in which you systematically address both the pros and cons of the piece. It's something I try to do in my own reviews :) Keep up the great work, brother!

Thanks for the vid, you are 100% on the money about the SNG. Striders are not the best knives, but they are stil my favorites.
I did not expect your cons. Well done! Thanks.
I think these Strider knives are beautiful. I don't understand why everyone thinks they're ugly. Now every spyderco is ugly in my opinion.
4 Different Striders with me and I have never seen a problem like those mentioned. They are 3 SMF and 1 SNG.

Striders are a colossus with feet of miry clay, but I still want one! Something about them is really cool.

+KILLA Senpai 13 that's ONE of the uses, but by no means is it this knifes only intended use... That lock stick alone is not worth 400 bucks wtf??
military operators? please. while its very good for them, most of the consumers are people who want a ergonomic folder...
The Eastwood Kid just remember that striders warranty is the best in the game imo. you're also paying for that..
This video stopped me from buying a Strider. I've had one before and sold it. I wanted to try one again, but I'm remembering why I didn't like it last time. Thanks again for the test drive, brother, and for the kind words about the review. 26;26... Hmmm... what happened there, Mr. Hinderer expert? LOL!!!
Thanks for this review too, it helped a lot

Nice looking knife and I love the drop point but $400 is high as a cat's back at this house :)
I hear ya!
And like you said the S30V is magical
Say what you want to about striders but hinderers do not regularly get double the retail value when sold On the secondary market

Prices are really coming down on the Hinderer's. I have been seeing alot of them on ebay with buy it nows from $550-$625. I have my brother or Dad place my Hinderer orders, one is military one is FF/Paramedic.
I really like the blade design myself and it's different if you want a hender buy a hender if you want a strider buy a strider it all depends on what you personally want
im on the fence about that knife, ive bought the chris reeve sebenza and the hinderer xm18 and the strider was next on the list but in questioning it
Am I the only one who just does not see Strider as much of a tactical producer?
So much for the market bottoming out huh?
noise and light discipline in the field
It's no Sabenza 25.
the hollow pivot needs a grease zert
Great review. I was on the fence and I have now made it up. That knife sounds pretty rickety and kind of crappy. I will get a sebenza instead. For me it's a better fit anyhow. Thanks again
I would love to see a collaboration with Spyderco or CRKT at a $200 price point. It would definitely be a best seller. Camouflaged and pointy!
also whats the deal with mick strider? ive just heard people say they wouldn't get into it. Im not sure whats up with him, it doesn't sound very positive
alot of ppl call him a dick, hes in association with John Willis from SOE.
enough said................
Ayden Neufeld he lied about being a special ops guy or something
Yup he lied about being MARSOC "Marine Force Recon" He also catches alot of flack in 2016 for his business associates.
brous blades made the thickest knife ever. called the t4.
That lock stick sounds atrocious.
Would you consider selling this knife?
Spyderco southard. Any day insted of a SNG or SMF. And half the cost. With that said I really do like the sj75. And saw a custom one that was bigger than a SMF. That is a bad ass knife.
Maybe you just need another week to get to know it! ;-)
I just pryed a beer bottle cap off with my SNG, but then again im nuts :)
Perfect application, buddy! That is exactly what a Strider is for :)

Haha. Well if you ever decide you want to try out an SNG again, i have a SNG lego green g10 3/4 ground stonewashed that is entirely too small for my hand and is basically new, id give you a killer price, as i got a good deal on it. =)
also thats weird mine is 4.6 oz
ill give you $50.00 for it .
my fake sebenza small did the same thing in the lock.
These were the days... pandemic nostlgia
$400 for a jack knife? With no gold inlays!
Yeah! What GLB said. Good review.
This is a tough one, it really is. I'd actually like to own an SNG, but I'll have to wait for a deal, because your "value" logic is on the money.
2.80 cutting edge, mostly handle .... a pass
I really do think it's a great "beater knife," read "hard use," but would like to see it $250 or so given its level of quality.

so his skeletons got drug out of the closet.
Beater???
That is a ghost striped 154cm blade. You should try using one before making all these weak judgements...
Dude, AP wasn’t even that harsh. I thought his evaluation was very fair....even more fair than most
who in the military gets issued this knife.
?
Seems you reviewed this knife to only find faults.
Adam Jackson funny I didn’t get that at all.
Trade u my 1911 for it
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
34 thumb down Reeve owners lol
you spelled Strider wrong lol
JUST GOT MY FIRST smf so disappointed. there are much cheaper knives with way better lock geometry. why in the hell wouldn't strider swallow their pride and change it, period. and to charge 25 to fix it, and to suggest that its done on purpose because its tip up carry and that the lock stick will work itself out. yeah it will work itself right into lock rock. get over yourself strider.
Wow you sound like an expert knife maker
:(
who will pay $400 for that ugly knife?
Probably the same kind a people that pay 2 million for an ugly bugatti when you could've had a sexy af 200k lambo.. people are weird and it's the same when it comes to pocket knives, to each is his own.
+Anthony Burke lol yup I paid $300 for the zt 0456 blue hardware and I think it looks better than those $500+ knives.
+john smith exactly and guess what. a zt 0550 new 3rd Gen with titanium and s35 vn steel is 200 bucks.. half the price of a sebenza. all about preference I guess
I will and have
