As someone who competed in cycling at an international level of sport...I can honestly say that I have never had a doubt that these guys are doping. My guess is many of the top guys are, and maybe many more. I believe I actually asked you in a comment some time ago about testing protocols and if triathlon did test at all. It is a shame, but in endurance sports it is what happens. And I don't believe for a moment that Colin won clean. If you are winning clean, why then go on EPO? Great video Ari, and thanks for your thoughts!!!

I think there are reasons for a successful clean athlete to start doping. But I agree with you here that Collin's explanation about starting doping doesn't make sense. If he had been winning clean, I don't think he would have had the sense of despair that he talks about as driving him to do everything possible including crossing the line into EPO. He switches coaches, has incredible success, and then despairs over his results? It doesn't add up. It makes so much more sense to plateau just beneath your goals, feel like a failure, and then turn to EPO/doping to push you to your goals.

@@tak-el-uc Your theory about athletes plateauing below their goals makes a bunch of sense if you remember his story from the Kona Vlogs last year on Lionel's chanel. Colin was basically pushed out of the ITU by [redacted] because he wasn't A. winning races and B. wasn't as young as the new talent constantly flowing into the sport. Dude said it himself, "I had to start making money in the sport because I had taken out a loan." In his eyes, it was either "Start doping and win some races and continue to be a professional triathlete" or "Get a different job, quit triathlon, and pay back that loan."

If you look at scientific data analysis his is simply not explainable in all of running history. They have to diet for hundred grams and he runs with a bmi of 24.4 That is more than suspicious. I hope that by owning the doping Collin Chartier is isn't as skewered about being caught than some of the people who have offered lame excuse after lame excuse.
With the recovery boosts to be gained in PED doping for training, it is hard for me to believe that many (most?) of top endurance athletes aren't doping. I am probably a bit jaded as I am a cycling fan going back to the time when it was expected to have a few cyclists a year drop dead from doping. I believe that testing really just keeps a "level playing field" at a usually not fatal level of doping rather than keeping the sport clean. A clean athlete has to have a significantly better baseline than a doped competitor and then be able to train just as hard as doped competitor to beat them.

That said, taking these drugs is clearly extremely selfish and lacking of empathy, and that such a behavior should deserve empathetic response is only half true. You should be strive to be empathetic, yes, but also be cautious. A person resorting to doping and only admitting to it after getting caught should reasonably be considered narcissistic, psychopathic or anti social to some degree and be met with caution as they may very well still try to manipulate the situation and those around them to their own benefit. Like it's the honourable sport where everybody is clean and proper. I bet if you blanket test everyone in the KONA/PTO world you get a very, very long list of cheaters and bans left right and centre. It's like the GranFondo racing series in cycling. The older the athlete, the more gear is used. Blanket testing is the only solution to end this.

Racing as an age grouper and fully jacked on the gear. Regardless of how many pro's are on it, I believe it's rampant amongst age group triathletes. There are guys out there I absolutely dusted as a kid and young adult who in their late 50's and early 60's are fully ripped and obviously have a friendly G.P. It gives me the shits.

All the people that aren’t doping are being railroaded. The dopers are remembered for losing the win, but no one remembers the people who ACTUALLY win.

Maybe I'm just a naïve fool who wants to keep on believing in my heroes past the point of logic, and I'm *sure* I have a very different perspective on the issue since I'm just an age-grouper, but even if we have confirmation of one person doping in triathlon, I'm not ready to start jumping to conclusions about other athletes doing the same, no matter how much success they may have had recently. That's a lot of weight and disdain to put on someone for something they may not have done, and I feel like it gives too much of an "out" to discount someone's legitimate accomplishments by saying "Oh, they must've been doping." Innocent until proven guilty, as far as I'm concerned. I just hope I don't end up eating my words on this one.
