  • Various voyages serving as engineer for Houlder Bros and bank Line on world wide voyages 1969 till 1974. Mainly on diesel powered general cargo ships.
The first ship on the slideshow is the Royston Grange in Royal Victoria dock London. This ship was usually on a run from London to RIver Plate for beef both chilled and frozen from Argentina. as it was on a regular service which could also include Rotterdam, when the ship got to London the crew would go home for three weeks or so and reliefs would work on the ship as it did about a three month round trip. On May 11th 1972 whilst I was on the Shaftesbury on a run to Central America the Royston Grange was in collision with a tanker in the River Plate off Montevideo and caught fire resulting in total loss of life 63 crew and 10 passengers also an Argentinian pilot.
The tanker Tien Chee also had 8 out of 40 crew killed.
The Royston Grange also had some butter as cargo which ignited from the oil on the tanker. A sad day for British shipping.

Remember well a ships visit from Gravesend sea school to view the Harwick Grange. To my eyes a beautiful ship and everything that going away to sea encapsulated in 1976. Who knew that by 83 it was all but over for the once great British Merchant Navy. Ships, shipyards & crews.

@@tonyjones99 remember it well I was on the Shaftesbury on a Liverpool River Plate run when we got the news. I knew a few of the crew on the Royston Grange having done relief work on board in London a couple of times for around 2 to 3 weeks whilst the regular crew went home but no one ever wanted to leave the ship as it was a good run and steady number with a round trip of around 3 months with a short visit ti Rotterdam en route.
      Thanks for the response. Brian

An interesting collection of photo's Brian, you've certainly seen the world through your career as an Engineer, I like the one of the bow crashing through the swell and I bet you went through a lot worse than that one, many thanks for posting regards nige

@@thirdengineer Hi Brian, yes I checked out what footage is on the tube, an awful disaster and when you see what the ship was like after the fire its not surprising there were no survivors totally gutted, it must have tore through the ship with that much speed making evacuation impossible, would have been very hard for you I would say having worked on that ship while in port then later while at sea hearing the very tragic news, nige

We have been on the Royston Joya and the Edenmore but only the Edenmore at the same Time and only for a few days in South Shields where I paid off I was eng cadet at the time John Heaton
Guess you remember the Silver fox if you were on the Royston in London
    Take care

Hello John good to hear from someone who worked for Houlder Bros they were a good company but I lost interest when the cargo ships were being sold.Yes I knew the silver Fox and also another coasting engineer called Ron Angel who was a very nice chap. No one would leave the Royston or Hardwicke but there was always relief work to be had in London when the freezer boats where in probably a blessing I did not push for a trip on the Royston!
Went to Bankline for a year and then to KSC which became UASC
Which I never regretted and stayed with them for 12 years.
Now retired and 75 in January l still miss those days more so BA
      and Brazil!
      All the best Brian

      Hello again John
I also knew the chief eng on the Royston Tappit I think his name was and the 2nd was a smashing bloke from Warrington called Dave Reville. The chief freezer eng who
I dont think was on in the collision as I think he only did coasting was called George Jeery from Norwich I think? Brian

Sorry I cant recall you on the Edenmore although it was very brief.I joined in South Shields15th Sept 72 and did a run up to Narvik and back to Newport SW then a run down west Africa to Monrovia and back to Newport again where I paid off 27th Oct 1972 .Chief Eng was a Scotsman called Craig who was a great chief, he had a trip off when I left and rejoined again in Newport I believe and was in the pilots cabin one night prior to handing over when there was a fire in the accomadation and he sadly lost his life.!
