- Eve Home, the HomeKit exclusive smart home accessory maker, has been on a roll recently updating its existing product line up with Thread support. The company has also been releasing new products with the Eve Weather and now it's the turn of the Eve Energy getting the Thread treatment which is already available in the EU and shortly arriving in the US and UK markets.
The 3rd Generation Eve energy smart plug keeps with the previous design and also features energy monitoring found in previous generations and supports Thread
Note - The Thread version is only available in the EU at this time. UK and US version arriving in April and May. Make sure you get the following for Thread support
Eve Energy (Europe, 3rd generation) - geni.us/MFFIY (Affiliate link)
Eve Energy (U.K., 3rd generation) - amzn.to/3ufWaWg (Affiliate link)
Eve Energy (U.S. & Canada, 3rd generation) - geni.us/EveenergyNA

Another really good video, as usual. Thanks!!
I think there’s maybe a wee mistake at 7:31 but I might be wrong... you state eve energy can act as a border router. But presumably it can only act as a thread router rather than a border router. I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s just a slip of the tongue but just mentioned it in case anyone thinks this can provide redundancy against HomePod mini failures.
Yes, well spotted and I am kicking myself I forgot to edit it out. Thanks for pointing it out, I will pin this comment so people see it and are aware of the mistake
This is why I love the channel. More than willing to admit a mistake and own it
Nice that you pointed out the differences in the meross brand and Eve. People are often driven to price rather than value of what something brings
It’s important to understand the value of what something brings. But in the reverse people often “over buy” so buy something they will never need all the features. I do it sometimes
You create amazing reviews! You can tell you actually use these products. Just need it to arrive in the US now
Thank you! So much, I am told it’s arrive this or next month
@@HomeKitAuthority thank you
Hi John, love the channel continue the amazing work. Can i make automations based on power consumption? Like if the power goes below X make Y happen?
Good stuff Jon. I look forward to the NA version. Having thread is worth the extra charge.
Well it’s the same price as the previous version. Just more expensive than say Meross.
Nice review, best HomeKit channel
Feel humbled
@@HomeKitAuthority keep up the great work
Does it base the projected cost off your current location? Electric costs are different from State to State in the U.S.
£30 just now on Amazon for BF :) I am getting one just for thread, although seeing power usage will be a good bonus.
In our house during GMT we pay 13.26 pence per kw between 02:30-07:30, 19.77 pence per kw between 07:30-22:30 and 13.26 pence per kw between 1:30-00:30 so can I set it up so that I have programmes running at these times with these prices and if I have my computer plugged into one of these sockets during the switch over will my computer's power be affected?
Do any of these have tiered prices we can enter? Here we have different rates for times of the day.
When I plug a device (with Thread, 4th Generation) and it is charging properly, the detailed page of the device, when it shows the Consumption, its value is always 0W.
I have 15 Eve Energy devices, most of them show the proper value in Consumption, but around 3-5 of them show always 0W when there is energy going through the device.
I have unplugged them, but it is always the same Consumption = 0W, with and without load.
Please do you have any idea on how to make them work properly, thank you
Eve Energy (with Thread) vs Hue Smart Plug?
Hi so sorry if this is a dumb question
But it want to control aquarium doseing pump from away from my home eg abroad, now do I just a simple buy the plug and connect to my wifi router or do I need additional equipment ?Tnx
The plug uses Thread / Bluetooth. It’s not going to ever directly interface with your Wi-fi router. You’ll need a HomeKit hub like a HomePod Mini to control it remotely.
Cool. But I just checked it’s £40 for a plug !.. I can get two smart plugs (non homekit) for £20. Too expensive.
Hi fantastic video again I am new to HomeKit yesterday I bought the apple mini speaker because off thread I do have the eve door/window sensors went on the eve app went on thread network it is saying no thread network active I thought the eve sensors was thread compatibility or I might be doing something wrong
Which versions do you have? Have you updated the firmware? Use this page to determine your www.evehome.com/en/identify-your-eve-accessory
@@HomeKitAuthority hi thanks for reply I think they are 2 gen bought them in 2018 will these work eventually?
Unfortunately they do not have the right hardware inside them
I currently have a hue smart plug for my turbo trainer and thinking of getting one for my fan while I’m on the turbo. Would you recommend eve or hue for this purpose? Obviously hue is cheaper
Unless you need a thread router or energy monitoring. Then stick with the hue if it works
@@HomeKitAuthority well I don’t really need energy monitoring. Also I think I just want my first thread product 😂 is it worth the extra money just to get thread started or am I just being a sucker? 😂
If you plan to get other thread devices like the Eve weather and want to place them far away from
The house, then it will help
@@HomeKitAuthority yeah I know what you mean, no other thread products I’d want want as of yet but I’ll just see what comes out. Don’t think I’ll even need to extend the thread network anyway so might just stick with hue
I wonder whether this can do power consumption automations. To create one, you will need Controller or Home+. There’s a current power service. You have to actually create an automation and test it with an appliance to know if it works. There are smart plugs that expose current power but if it is not reported whenever there’s a change then it cannot be reliably used for automations. Please look into this when you get the chance. I imagine it would be informative for many. The only option right now that I know of is the Aqara plug with the original Aqara hub (unfortunately newer hubs don’t expose current power).
If you can do me a favor and
1 Look at the Eve energy in Controller and check if there’s a “current power” service
2 Create an automation using this service and see if it works
The correct way to create this automation is first select “current power” as the trigger and choose “any”, and then use conditions to specify the actual power level you desire.
Do these still work if your ISP goes down? Mine seems to drop once or twice a week, always in the middle of the night when I am working. I only found out after I bought my homepod mini's. Nothing like getting a offline message at 2am to 5am. defeats the Circle View as a security camera too.
If you are inside the home and no internet they will work. But if you are away from the home and your isp goes down, then no device is accessible as you can’t connect.
@@HomeKitAuthority I know the camera doesn’t save when no internet. Just wondering if the usage history of the plugs still works since it supposedly doesn’t leave via the internet...
Any local automations will work without the internet
There's a few reviews on Amazon with people saying the plug blew up, & cut the power in their houses.
Is there something wrong with these plugs with QC?
Or are those people just trying to run way too much power through them , it's pretty concerning
I would have a guess at these people using these on kettles. This device is rated at 2500watts (2.5kw) and most kettles are rated at 3000watts (3kw).
Excellent review as always, do you know if it’s going to be April or May for the UK version
I think it may creep into May for the release
@@HomeKitAuthority excellent thank you!
Are Eve updating existing Eve Energy UK plugs for thread support or will it be a new product that you have to buy?
It’s a new product as the existing devices do not have the correct hardware
Expensive, but would you say this is a must for thread?
If you have devices that are thread end points like an Eve weather outside. Then if you are looking for a smart plug then this is a contender because of its thread router properties
Is this plug capable of handling the power needed to operate an electric fireplace?
Previous generation was rated 13A - 2500W MAX. If you go beyond that the switch turns off.
@@radko412 Really need a 15amp to comfortably control a fireplace
Not come across any 15 amp smart plugs yet for HomeKit
Is this 230v?
Can this plug actually act as a dimmer for a lightsource ?
No
Great review ! Could you make a video about HomePass please ?

@@HomeKitAuthority Perfect ! Thank you very much 👍
i think the url takes me to the old US ones on amazon.
Yes, as per the note the US version is not available yet. Are you US or EU?
@@HomeKitAuthority ah yes US has a bit of more time to wait. i wish they brought back eve flare with thread. eve flare being scalped at 220 on amazon :0
I wished Amazon would clamp down on that. Nanoleaf bulbs on Amazon at 30 GPB, over here they 17.99
@@HomeKitAuthority i was able to order the nonleaf bulbs at retail directly from apple. just have to wait a few weeks. well worth, not paying 40 or 50 a bulb on a second hand market i agree .
Is this a wifi and is it thread? I will be buying smart devices and would like to stay away from BT if possible
Thread
I hope EVE supports Google once they FINALLY turn on Thread & chip certification happend this year.
That will be an interesting move by Eve if they did. The reason being is that the company prides itself on privacy and I didn’t think google will give them enough comfort
@@HomeKitAuthority That’s a really interesting point, I had always thought the obstacle to wider adoption would always be the tech but you’re totally right, the privacy question is important for a company like eve.
That said, i am wondering to what extent eve is responsible for privacy if a consumer opts to hook up their products to google (and provides some tips to users for how best to configure the product to respect their privacy).
LOL.. "The 'Ome app"... As George Bernard Shaw once said, the Americans and the English are separated by a common language...
Too big. Prefer the smaller sized Wemo plug.
Can you trigger HomeKit automations by the current sensing functionality of the plug? The idea being to automate lighting when the television is turned on.
