I dont know if anyone else has mentioned this but the photo that is showed when you mention Yoda's difficulty breathing is actually him 'feeling' the deaths of his fellow jedi during the operation of Order 66, not the fact that he had breathing difficulties but more so the fact that he is so connected to the force that he could feel deaths of other Jedi.

I appreciate that you depart from the ingrained superstitious faith in Yoda, which engenders the "Yoda automatically wins because Yoda" mentality, and actually analyze how the respective strengths and weaknesses of each character would intersect during combat. Great video.
And although I think Katarn would be defeated in a duel against Yoda, I doubt he would be killed given Yoda's inclinations against combat and killing. As such, he would likely survive, and having first hand knowledge of Yoda's techniques, would fight to a stalemate in any subsequent duel.

Really nice analysis, and your yoda breakdown is clearly inspired heavily by jenserai’s in his Yoda vs Malak, as it follows the same beats, and I really love, that you re-stated his believe, that overpowering yoda is impossible. Where you make chances for the better, is that jen is the biggest yoda hater in your UA-cam group, and your analysis is free of some off his more biased negative points. I was afraid going in to this video, as we know how must you love katarn, but you did not fail us, and this is now the finest Yoda breakdown your group has to offer. I can't believe I am just finding your stuff...these are so in depth I love it. You take the time to flesh out each character from as many sources as you possibly and reasonably can, which is something not a bunch of people seem to do.
Lol. Dessan, when amped by Force nexus of the Valley of the Jedi, was able to contend with post-DE Luke Skywalker and even disable him from further fight. Among enemies Obi-Wan fought only RotS Anakin and Dooku might be able to replicate this feat. And Kyle defeated Dessan when he was amped by mentioned nexus AND Yavin's nexus. Add to that Kenobi's shitty Force defense and Kyle wins in a good fight.
I like this style of VS Video, the ones that are more about studying the characters involved rather than settling a debate. They're go farther into the lore of the galaxy and the thematics of the characters involved.

I knew Kyle was going to lose this one. I mean, he won't win every Vs match, I'm afraid. Yoda just seems to have far too much experience in order for Katarn to defeat him. Katarn would definitely put up a challenge to him though. However, he would ultimately lose. Great video!
@@BlackEpyon Yep, i'd definitely say he is around Dooku/early Vader levels in dueling skill, and Dooku level in force powers. Yoda is a tier higher in both dueling and force usage, but it's not a huge margin.
@@BlackEpyon Sorry man, I mustn't have gotten the response when you posted it. Yeah, I agree with what you said. Katarn definitely has a lot of tools to work with, but so does Yoda, and Yoda definitely isn't lacking when it comes to lightsaber combat. Evan was spot on about Yoda having counters to all of the force based attacks Kyle can use as well, which tips things in Yoda's favour due to their reduced effectiveness.
After watching it I have to say that while it was closer than I thought, it's more or less what I expected as I have long equated Kyle Katarn being the Mace Windu of his era
Great vid EvanNova95 I always get excited when I see one of your videos pop up and it makes me so happy to know that you're still doing the versus series. I would like to suggest a double battle with Revan and Malak ( during the events prior to KOTOR 1) and Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi (prior to episode 1)
Think about it, Kyle Katarn fought Desann who was arguably better than him, or even Luke. Kyle ended up using the environment to his advantage to kill the Dark Jedi. When Katarn has failed in engagements was when he was caught off guard by his opponents, but remember that the same thing happened with Yoda, when Sidious used force lightning against him. What I do believe, however is that both Kyle and Yoda are on par with each other, that is untill Katarn starts to become angry and fuels himself with the dark side. If you look at his engagement with Jaden Korr(if his student turns to the dark side) you'd see that Kyle is a beast when he's enraged. He employs frequent hand to hand enhanced attacks, while he disables his opponent saber with the force(a feat that Yoda achieved as well), he also uses force choke to grab an opponent and pummel him in the walls, or just uses lightning. There are instances where his chokes are so powerful that a Jedi Knight can't use force push to break free. You also failed to understand that Kyle Katarn's primary advantage is his insane endurance to punishment, he's also unpredictable and very dangerous, uses his environment to his advantage as well. It's like trying to compare a Porsche with a Tank. In his fight with Dooku, Yoda struggled to defend from his force throws, whenever the Sith Lord hurled an object the Jedi Master barely could deflect it, I can hear his grunts and realize Yoda had a definite weakness because of his size. Even if he said to Luke that size matters not he still died because of it. That's why Yoda started off very fast and aggressive, but that was not his core strength, his strength was in controlling the engagement. The only problem is that him trying to fight Kyle is like trying to match a Tank brute strength head on, that's suicide for the Jedi Master. The only problem is that Kyle also has speed at his side and can win the fight hands down no problem, simply because he's a more well rounded fighter. My opinion is that Katarn is somewhere in between Dooku and Sidious in therms of abilities, but he has more endurance than Dooku, along with a few tricks up his sleeve.

I just want to point out that Kyle might be able to content with Yoda long enough for exhausting to catch up with Yoda, as Kyle is far younger and fitter. A dragged out fight would be in his favor in this instant as it is the most likely chance for him to win. This is only a possibility though and otherwise I agree with your assessment of these two characters and I feel like this was possible your best analysis so far (and I am gleeful to see Kyle recognized for the badass he is, he is one of my favorite characters in the Legends/EU :D).

Ok, I'm just gonna say this: how can half of you determine how well a character would perform against another, when you haven't even read any of material that they're involved in? This hive mind needs to stop; even Evan has said that his opinions shouldn't be taken as fact. It's like trying to say that Revan can contend with Darth Sidious, because he's mastered both the dark and the light, but if you've read the content that they're involved in, and are aware of the accolades and feats that surround both characters, then you'd know that Revan would die in seconds.
I really love this video, especially the way you expertly compared and contrasted their respective dueling abilities and how they stack up against each other. I'm wondering if you could do a similar video with Kyle vs Anakin (as of Revenge of the Sith). I'm interested in how you compare their dueling abilities since they are both Djem So + Ataru users. Kyle has a broader pool of styles to choose from while Anakin is a specialist so I'm wondering your opinion in how they would fair against each other.
I'm also curious about a Luke vs Kyle fight. You say that they're often compared to each other in terms of lightsaber skill so I'm curious about how you would judge a fight between them.
I think kyle would be able to hold off yoda long enough to either learn his style and break it like Luke did, or yoda would get tired eventually and make a mistake. or kyle could hit him with lightning when yoda isn't expecting it and momentarily break his momentum to gain the as advantage
I can agree with that, they were built very similar but Bane has been known to have a great anger, such as when he lashed out against Zannah, so I think Mace, through a hard duel could use that
When it comes to pure lightsaber dueling, would Kyle be able to defeat GM Luke or just be close but not quite able to? The material in this time period makes it difficult at times to determine a real pecking order as Jacen, Jaina, Mara, Kyle, and Luke all seem to be around each other in skill.
+Ryan O'Connell Oh my. Kun is going to crush Kenobi. Dueling wise is tricky because I have no idea how Kenobi deals with Kun's Trakata tactics and archaic saberstaff techniques. Since Kun +his weapon leads to a result that is highly similar to General Greivous, I assume Kenobi can wall Kun but it would take everything out of him. In force abilities...wow Kun stomps. Force power wise, if Kenobi if Palp is a 10, Vader is an 8, and Dooku is a 5.5 then Kenobi is a 4.5 and Kun is an 8.5. Kenobi has crappy passive tk barriers and Kun can penetrate Odan Urr's (who is basically Tales of the Jedi era Yoda in force abilities), lightning, force blasts, and sith sorcery. GG Kenobi. There is no way he is overcoming that.
@EvanNova95 wouldn't the quotes stating that yoda struggled with handling specifically Dooku's force lightning be contradicted by what we've heard/read Dooku say about the fight he had with yoda? I remember hearing something about Dooku's being terrified of the ease at which yoda not only redirected the force lightning but enhanced the strength of said lightning....
Great video--though honestly, I'm wondering if Katarn might be more aptly compared to Mace than Dooku in terms of pure power level. You said it yoursef, Kyle is Tier 1, and while I do think Yoda could pull out a victory here, I think it would be MUCH harder for him than it was against Dooku. Katarn is far more versatile, and arguably more powerful in the Force, than Dooku ever was. Yoda can overwhelm him, but it's on the back of Force abilities--I do see Katarn's saber style to be predominantly offensive, but it's not in the same WAY as Dooku. Whereas Dooku would poke holes in an impenetrable defense, Kyle would bind Yoda's saber blade on his own and shunt-block him through a wall. Even still, you definitely came to the right verdict, and it's great to see you back. I know you guys don't do power scaling much. But the stuff that Yoda gets....... Kyle stands no chance. Kenobi, who has deadlifted 40m cruisers, blasted trees, is the only Jedi other than Yoda to pierce Sidious' cosmic nexus, ragdolled Ventress etc etc, which are feats that quite frankly outclass anything Kyle has done. Was ragdolled by Dooku, who likewise was utterly outclassed by Yoda. I'll give you that your suggested tactic for Katarn, could work. If it weren't for the ludicrous power difference

Evan clearly backs up the accomplishments of Katarn with real feats of his that occurred in the expanded universe. Where are your sources for backing up your perceived notions of Katarns power level?
Max Acree Power level does not really matter honestly. Power scaling is only one part if the puzzle. One doesn't win because he is more powerful. They win due to Tactics, Skill, Circumstance, Senario, Condition, ETC any number of details could be the difference in a battle. Haazen for example. Leaps and bounds more powerful than Zayne Carrick and yet Zayne Beat him with a simple trick. He did not win due to power at all. Sion and Nihlus got beat by somebody far less powerful then them. Sirrik beat them with manipulation, and willpower. Colemon Trebor...enough said. Kyle's fight with Caedus. Caedus beat kyle due to a dirty move and carefully laid out planning. But both are equal in "power" in my opinion. Bane was defeated by Zannah but not due to power alone. The rule of two was meant to test all the abilities of the apprentice and see If they had surpassed their master in most of those aspects. Zannah was a far worse dualist but won due to a few unique force abilities, surprise, and willpower or bane would have been successful with essence transfer. And a last example is Aurra Sing killing Sharrad Hett. Far more "power" than Aurra but the situation he was in left him open.

Agreed. But there's a limit to it. All the strategy and tactics in the world won't do anything if can't touch your opponent. Which Katarn can't. Katarn's showings don't even match Kenobi, let alone Dooku, who was still easily defeated by Yoda, even when amped to hell by the dark side nexus on Vjun.
while your analysis is extensive, it misses on one thing, glaringly. in the "legends" which will be canon to me, always, it has shown that Yoda tended to teach all he knew to those who could become competent. by the time of Luke and Kyle, I notice that these masters all tended to have capabilities that they simply did not pass on to anyone. and I think that, like any good soldier, Kyle would have studied Yoda well before initiating contact. Yoda would be aware and use the meditations and time immersed in the Force to prepare himself. so I would give Kyle a 35% chance, just on these factors. Luke may have shared some things with Kyle too. I also note that those who have been deep in both sides of the Force tend to be full of surprises, some of which come from intuition and simply not using the Force. look at Jaina's time training with the Mando'a to take down her brother. I would always keep something in reserve, a surprise nobody had seen to keep an edge just in case a student fell to the Dark Side.
Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not Kyle could weather Yoda's assault. If he can, Yoda's energy drains and Kyle wins. If not, Kyle's defenses are bypassed and Yoda wins.

+Matthew Aguilar Schnitzer Have thought of that match for like 3 years and made a verdict. Here in just the gen breakdown. They basically = as swordsmen, but Krayt has better force abilities in gen causing Krayt to asspull an win (he barely takes this and will be in for the fight of his life).
Krayt is actually way more powerful than Exar, not only is he the most powerful Sith to of ever lived, but because he was revived by the Yuuzhan Vong he became extremely power in the force, I think before krayt's resurrection exar would stand a chance, but after his resurrection Krayt would almost destroy exar.

even if Yoda has a big chance to win, but really Katarn is something our little green friend must be trembling with shock after finally destroying his saber and win. Katarn is nothing like anyone Yoda has ever met, had sparring time, not even Dooku. Katarn has superb lightsaber skills and a Soresu circle of shelter only below his colleague Luke Skywalker. But in terms of wielding the Force, i bet that Yoda has never seen anyone wielding both light and dark so elegantly, even to the level of wielding the darkside powers while maintaining absolute clarity in his mind and heart, achieveing both tactical advantage of the light and the destruction of the dark at the same time.
I'm glad you pointed out that though obi-wan isn't superior to Katarn he has a better chance to defeat Yoda. I was thinking the same thing early on in the video because like you said Katarn is way too offensive.

I feel its kind of obvious though. They = as swordsmen, but Kyle wins due to greater force power and variety of abilities.

Dessan, when amped by Force nexus of the Valley of the Jedi, was able to contend with post-DE Luke Skywalker and even disable him from further fight. Among enemies Obi-Wan fought only RotS Anakin and Dooku might be able to replicate this feat. And Kyle defeated Dessan when he was amped by mentioned nexus AND Yavin's nexus.
Add to that Kenobi's shitty Force defense and Kyle wins in a good fight.
How can you say being a force ghost has no battle application when Yoda could summon up lightening burning that tree? Looked pretty destructive to me.
This was made before the Last Jedi came out and is referring to Yoda in the Legends continuity where Force ghost Yoda can't do that

I like this style of VS Video, the ones that are more about studying the characters involved rather than settling a debate. They're go farther into the lore of the galaxy and the thematics of the characters involved.

I knew Kyle was going to lose this one. I mean, he won't win every Vs match, I'm afraid. Yoda just seems to have far too much experience in order for Katarn to defeat him. Katarn would definitely put up a challenge to him though. However, he would ultimately lose.

@@BlackEpyon Yep, i'd definitely say he is around Dooku/early Vader levels in dueling skill, and Dooku level in force powers. Yoda is a tier higher in both dueling and force usage, but it's not a huge margin.
@@BlackEpyon Sorry man, I mustn't have gotten the response when you posted it. Yeah, I agree with what you said. Katarn definitely has a lot of tools to work with, but so does Yoda, and Yoda definitely isn't lacking when it comes to lightsaber combat. Evan was spot on about Yoda having counters to all of the force based attacks Kyle can use as well, which tips things in Yoda's favour due to their reduced effectiveness.
After watching it I have to say that while it was closer than I thought, it's more or less what I expected as I have long equated Kyle Katarn being the Mace Windu of his era

I would like to suggest a double battle with Revan and Malak ( during the events prior to KOTOR 1) and Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi (prior to episode 1)

Kyle Katarn vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
Think about it, Kyle Katarn fought Desann who was arguably better than him, or even Luke. Kyle ended up using the environment to his advantage to kill the Dark Jedi. When Katarn has failed in engagements was when he was caught off guard by his opponents, but remember that the same thing happened with Yoda, when Sidious used force lightning against him. What I do believe, however is that both Kyle and Yoda are on par with each other, that is untill Katarn starts to become angry and fuels himself with the dark side. If you look at his engagement with Jaden Korr(if his student turns to the dark side) you'd see that Kyle is a beast when he's enraged. He employs frequent hand to hand enhanced attacks, while he disables his opponent saber with the force(a feat that Yoda achieved as well), he also uses force choke to grab an opponent and pummel him in the walls, or just uses lightning. There are instances where his chokes are so powerful that a Jedi Knight can't use force push to break free. You also failed to understand that Kyle Katarn's primary advantage is his insane endurance to punishment, he's also unpredictable and very dangerous, uses his environment to his advantage as well. It's like trying to compare a Porsche with a Tank. In his fight with Dooku, Yoda struggled to defend from his force throws, whenever the Sith Lord hurled an object the Jedi Master barely could deflect it, I can hear his grunts and realize Yoda had a definite weakness because of his size. Even if he said to Luke that size matters not he still died because of it. That's why Yoda started off very fast and aggressive, but that was not his core strength, his strength was in controlling the engagement. The only problem is that him trying to fight Kyle is like trying to match a Tank brute strength head on, that's suicide for the Jedi Master. The only problem is that Kyle also has speed at his side and can win the fight hands down no problem, simply because he's a more well rounded fighter. My opinion is that Katarn is somewhere in between Dooku and Sidious in therms of abilities, but he has more endurance than Dooku, along with a few tricks up his sleeve.

I just want to point out that Kyle might be able to content with Yoda long enough for exhausting to catch up with Yoda, as Kyle is far younger and fitter. A dragged out fight would be in his favor in this instant as it is the most likely chance for him to win. This is only a possibility though and otherwise I agree with your assessment of these two characters and I feel like this was possible your best analysis so far (and I am gleeful to see Kyle recognized for the badass he is, he is one of my favorite characters in the Legends/EU :D).

Ok, I'm just gonna say this: how can half of you determine how well a character would perform against another, when you haven't even read any of material that they're involved in?
This hive mind needs to stop; even Evan has said that his opinions shouldn't be taken as fact. It's like trying to say that Revan can contend with Darth Sidious, because he's mastered both the dark and the light, but if you've read the content that they're involved in, and are aware of the accolades and feats that surround both characters, then you'd know that Revan would die in seconds.
I really love this video, especially the way you expertly compared and contrasted their respective dueling abilities and how they stack up against each other. I'm wondering if you could do a similar video with Kyle vs Anakin (as of Revenge of the Sith). I'm interested in how you compare their dueling abilities since they are both Djem So + Ataru users. Kyle has a broader pool of styles to choose from while Anakin is a specialist so I'm wondering your opinion in how they would fair against each other.
I'm also curious about a Luke vs Kyle fight. You say that they're often compared to each other in terms of lightsaber skill so I'm curious about how you would judge a fight between them.

I think kyle would be able to hold off yoda long enough to either learn his style and break it like Luke did, or yoda would get tired eventually and make a mistake. or kyle could hit him with lightning when yoda isn't expecting it and momentarily break his momentum to gain the as advantage

I can agree with that, they were built very similar but Bane has been known to have a great anger, such as when he lashed out against Zannah, so I think Mace, through a hard duel could use that

When it comes to pure lightsaber dueling, would Kyle be able to defeat GM Luke or just be close but not quite able to? The material in this time period makes it difficult at times to determine a real pecking order as Jacen, Jaina, Mara, Kyle, and Luke all seem to be around each other in skill.
Luke stomps or curbs, his base is far larger than Katarns
GM Luke would be at the top of this pecking order followed by Caedus. Katarn is powerful and skilled but he wouldn't be able to defeat Luke

+Ryan O'Connell Oh my. Kun is going to crush Kenobi. Dueling wise is tricky because I have no idea how Kenobi deals with Kun's Trakata tactics and archaic saberstaff techniques. Since Kun +his weapon leads to a result that is highly similar to General Greivous, I assume Kenobi can wall Kun but it would take everything out of him. In force abilities...wow Kun stomps. Force power wise, if Kenobi if Palp is a 10, Vader is an 8, and Dooku is a 5.5 then Kenobi is a 4.5 and Kun is an 8.5. Kenobi has crappy passive tk barriers and Kun can penetrate Odan Urr's (who is basically Tales of the Jedi era Yoda in force abilities), lightning, force blasts, and sith sorcery. GG Kenobi. There is no way he is overcoming that.
@EvanNova95 wouldn't the quotes stating that yoda struggled with handling specifically Dooku's force lightning be contradicted by what we've heard/read Dooku say about the fight he had with yoda? I remember hearing something about Dooku's being terrified of the ease at which yoda not only redirected the force lightning but enhanced the strength of said lightning....
Great video--though honestly, I'm wondering if Katarn might be more aptly compared to Mace than Dooku in terms of pure power level. You said it yoursef, Kyle is Tier 1, and while I do think Yoda could pull out a victory here, I think it would be MUCH harder for him than it was against Dooku. Katarn is far more versatile, and arguably more powerful in the Force, than Dooku ever was. Yoda can overwhelm him, but it's on the back of Force abilities--I do see Katarn's saber style to be predominantly offensive, but it's not in the same WAY as Dooku. Whereas Dooku would poke holes in an impenetrable defense, Kyle would bind Yoda's saber blade on his own and shunt-block him through a wall. Even still, you definitely came to the right verdict, and it's great to see you back.

I know you guys don't do power scaling much. But the stuff that Yoda gets....... Kyle stands no chance.
Kenobi, who has deadlifted 40m cruisers, blasted trees, is the only Jedi other than Yoda to pierce Sidious' cosmic nexus, ragdolled Ventress etc etc, which are feats that quite frankly outclass anything Kyle has done. Was ragdolled by Dooku, who likewise was utterly outclassed by Yoda.
I'll give you that your suggested tactic for Katarn, could work. If it weren't for the ludicrous power difference

Can I ask you to elaborate on that one? I'm pretty well versed in Kenobi but I haven't heard that one before.
Evan clearly backs up the accomplishments of Katarn with real feats of his that occurred in the expanded universe. Where are your sources for backing up your perceived notions of Katarns power level?

Power level does not really matter honestly. Power scaling is only one part if the puzzle. One doesn't win because he is more powerful. They win due to Tactics, Skill, Circumstance, Senario, Condition, ETC any number of details could be the difference in a battle.
Haazen for example. Leaps and bounds more powerful than Zayne Carrick and yet Zayne Beat him with a simple trick. He did not win due to power at all.
Sion and Nihlus got beat by somebody far less powerful then them. Sirrik beat them with manipulation, and willpower.
Colemon Trebor...enough said.
Kyle's fight with Caedus. Caedus beat kyle due to a dirty move and carefully laid out planning. But both are equal in "power" in my opinion.
Bane was defeated by Zannah but not due to power alone. The rule of two was meant to test all the abilities of the apprentice and see If they had surpassed their master in most of those aspects. Zannah was a far worse dualist but won due to a few unique force abilities, surprise, and willpower or bane would have been successful with essence transfer.
And a last example is Aurra Sing killing Sharrad Hett. Far more "power" than Aurra but the situation he was in left him open.

Agreed. But there's a limit to it. All the strategy and tactics in the world won't do anything if can't touch your opponent.

Katarn's showings don't even match Kenobi, let alone Dooku, who was still easily defeated by Yoda, even when amped to hell by the dark side nexus on Vjun.
while your analysis is extensive, it misses on one thing, glaringly. in the "legends" which will be canon to me, always, it has shown that Yoda tended to teach all he knew to those who could become competent. by the time of Luke and Kyle, I notice that these masters all tended to have capabilities that they simply did not pass on to anyone. and I think that, like any good soldier, Kyle would have studied Yoda well before initiating contact. Yoda would be aware and use the meditations and time immersed in the Force to prepare himself. so I would give Kyle a 35% chance, just on these factors. Luke may have shared some things with Kyle too. I also note that those who have been deep in both sides of the Force tend to be full of surprises, some of which come from intuition and simply not using the Force. look at Jaina's time training with the Mando'a to take down her brother. I would always keep something in reserve, a surprise nobody had seen to keep an edge just in case a student fell to the Dark Side.
Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not Kyle could weather Yoda's assault.
If he can, Yoda's energy drains and Kyle wins. If not, Kyle's defenses are bypassed and Yoda wins.

+Matthew Aguilar Schnitzer Have thought of that match for like 3 years and made a verdict. Here in just the gen breakdown. They basically = as swordsmen, but Krayt has better force abilities in gen causing Krayt to asspull an win (he barely takes this and will be in for the fight of his life).
Krayt is actually way more powerful than Exar, not only is he the most powerful Sith to of ever lived, but because he was revived by the Yuuzhan Vong he became extremely power in the force, I think before krayt's resurrection exar would stand a chance, but after his resurrection Krayt would almost destroy exar.
Krayt should win.

even if Yoda has a big chance to win, but really Katarn is something our little green friend must be trembling with shock after finally destroying his saber and win. Katarn is nothing like anyone Yoda has ever met, had sparring time, not even Dooku. Katarn has superb lightsaber skills and a Soresu circle of shelter only below his colleague Luke Skywalker. But in terms of wielding the Force, i bet that Yoda has never seen anyone wielding both light and dark so elegantly, even to the level of wielding the darkside powers while maintaining absolute clarity in his mind and heart, achieveing both tactical advantage of the light and the destruction of the dark at the same time.
I'm glad you pointed out that though obi-wan isn't superior to Katarn he has a better chance to defeat Yoda. I was thinking the same thing early on in the video because like you said Katarn is way too offensive.
