Sony Xperia L4 Review | Budget 21:9 Blower

- Review of the Sony Xperia L4 budget smartphone, the cheapest mobile from the Japanese giant in 2020. Here's my full verdict on the performance, camera tech, battery life and the rest of the Xperia L4 experience, after testing it out.
This Sony phone costs just £179 in the UK, so it's got hot competition from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo and Motorola. But this year's release boasts that same 21:9 design as the flagship 1 Mark 2. Of course, that's pretty much where the specs comparison ends, with a basic Mediatek chipset on board. It's limited for sure, but can still handle a quick PubG Mobile gaming session.
Battery life is good despite the small cell, while the near stock Android experience would be good - except that it's the old Android 9, which is disappointing. Here's hoping the Xperia L4 gets an upgrade soon.
Sony's camera tech is basic at best too, but the triple lens rear camera can shoot respectable looking photos if you take your time. Here's a closer look at the pic and video quality.

I just popped an Android 10 Rom on a Z1 Compact this week, which runs well. No excuse for Android 9 on this!!
Is that still getting updates or are you on custom ROM
@@nothingwrong4008 I used the AICP custom Rom. Last official software for Z1c was Android 5.1.1. instructions are on XDA if you fancy giving it a go!

i've been wanting to put android 10 on my z5 since it was a flag ship phone back in it's day and it'd be a shame to not have updated OS on such a briliant phone.
Nice one Chris. I've been using the Xperia L4 as a budget 2nd phone/work phone. Love it to be honest. For the price NFC, USB Type C, triple camera. You can't go wrong. Only fault as you say is the lack of Android 10. 9 Pie is OK. But there is no excuse Sony

My dream smartphone screen is a 21:9, 120hz, 1440p, notchless pop-up camera display. Imagine the Netflix shos I could binge watch.

You can get a TV for the price of such phones XD But maybe not an OLED one.

Well, he seems to be working with Sony to promote Xperia(look at Sony Xperia UA-cam channel), so not surprising that he cares about it.
Again, yes, I've hosted videos for their UA-cam channel - it's pretty common for UA-camrs to present videos for brands as side-work, it helps to keep the lights on. But these videos are 100% independent, based on my personal experiences.

Unfortunately I can't agree with you they are "Marvelous", they are at best in my experience nothing more than an expensive door stop. I had one, from out of the box was a pain! It went back to Sony Canada 3 times for repair in under 3 months. When returned to me for the 4th time it wouldn't swipe and lost me a final call back for a high profile position. Sony customer service sucked, my provider wrote the phone off and offered a replacement phone with a different brand.
Sony gets no second chances from me, I won't even consider their brand at this point for any purchases. The one common thing I learned through they years is they are not user friendly with menu's within menu's and not as intuitive or user friendly as other brands. They might have great aesthetics and sound impressive with stats, but I'll never put my hand in my pocket to reach for one of their phones, my wallet to purchase their products.

As much as i like Sony, their budget device particularly this one is okay at best, if you're really on a budget just get the similarly priced realme or Xiaomi , you get better bang for your buck, or find a second hand flagship on eBay or something
Agree as much as I love Sony also, the budget and low midrange just never do. Always go for high midrange and flagship from Sony.

Yeah, there's some really tough competition even at that price now. With Android 10 it would've been a better package, here's hoping it'll get an upgrade soon
Pretty much no one can compete with the chinese companies which is a shame as it all benefits their government but the average consumer won't care and you look at what they provide for the price vs other companies it seems like a no brainer.

@@sumanthparakala2005.... You'll need the 10 ll plus, I have a 10plus and an old xa2, when the 10 plus is in 16.9 it is the same screen size as the xa2...
I don’t need a strong, powerful smart phone but simply always love a good design phone and I like Xperia a lot since it started to launch its 21:9 screen, especially this texture on the back of this model L4, instead of the glass on the back for Xperia 1 II. But the fingerprints sensor and the power button got separated AGAIN, bummer!
I'm subscribing because there's not much youtuber covering and giving positive review on Sony smartphones nowadays
I have used Sony phones for like 2-3 years plus and one thing everyone needs to know if you are getting one is buy back up chargers because the socket or charger plug wear out and there will come a point when your charger stops working. Sony gave me three replacements then said no more. So buy a second charger because it’s beyond annoying when it happens. If this didn’t happen to other ppl ok but it kept happening to me, even on different Sony phones. The Xperia is a reliable, easy to use phone.
That dry "Boo" always gets me... I was eating FYI ;) Let's just say that projectiles were expelled.

Hey man, great review as usual, I'm currently looking into getting a new phone. I'm planning to use it for general use, little bit of photography, bit of youtube maybe some gaming. So I've watched all your budget phone reviews and top 10s, but I currently have about £180 saved up, and I'm wondering, which phone would you recommend at that price, or is there a phone that I should save up a little bit more for that would be more worth my time.

Take a look at the Realme 6 Series and Redmi Note 9 Series, both pack some serious midrange punch under 200£

Thank you for your helpful review..i am on a budget and my other sony xperian died on me yesterday despite following all the possible instructions to breathe life back into it. I quickly purchased this L4..Due to price range & duel sim swung it for me..Thanks again for your info..Luckily for me the cons are not a biggie for now, just glad to be back in the game with my new mob a day later lol..However when I can update to a newer generation in the future I will.

I have just purchased this phone so haven't tried it yet so it might be a while before I can post anything of my experience with it. I am not a gamer but do use a camera quite a bit on my present phone which is a Nokia which I have had now for around four years and I am now experiencing problems with it so needed a change but on a low budget. As long as I am able to use You Tube and other media on it I should be happy with it hopefully. It has a larger screen than my Nokia which is a bonus for me for watching films and videos. Thanks for your review on this phone.
Not sure if you will read this but I have a question, I can’t fkd the info anywhere, even Sony does not have the info! As you have played with the new top Xperia 1 , 2 version. Does the L4 have the great photo pro software on it like the top model. Sony should be kicking ass in the camera area as they have the teck in the real camera world.
After my wife put my Sony Xperia L3 in the washing machine, she bought me an L4 as a replacement! I'm pretty happy with the phone so far (only got it today but I was relieved that Google had remembered and downloaded all my apps). It's a pleasant surprise to find it's got 64MB of RAM. I hope it still works with the Sonly Xperia Companion app.
Found your channel and bam immediately subscribed. So many mobile lovers are obsessed with big ram . It would be helpful if you make them clear about how less ram with clean OS can give them better performance over Chinese mobiles which are loaded with bloatware and ram!

There has been no announcement from sony that they have scraped the L series but nor have they released anything new for over two years which is a bit of a shame.

I used 5' 5.7' and 6.2' screen smartphones the last 2 years. The 6.2' huawei for a week and sold it. I hate that smartphones become so uncomfortable and huge so i bought a cubot king kong mini. People i can t explain how this little fellow changed my life.

I was a huge Sony fan and have been with the brand since SE Vivaz, then to Xperia Ray, Xperia Pro, then to Xperia S and Z and Z3 but somewhere after that it simply lost it's charm and felt like the phone's were put together by a 5 year old playing with random parts... Now Sony has made a statement with the Mark 2 but for them to make a comeback and actually gain any notable market share they have to offer something other brands can't even in the budget range. They could have skimped on everything else and just put an awesome camera atleast similar to the mark 2 with full manual control on this phone to make it a bargain like Pixel 3a and 4a did. Otherwise people won't even bother with a huge screen which doesn't even have FHD resolution. Come on Sony... Please make a real comeback this time and stick around for good.

Looks a lot like Android One, except no guarantee on update. Don't really mind if Sony add this to their open device program.
It's been a long time since Sony abandoned budget lineup. Last time we got Xperia S with Qualcomm, then this lineup is Mediatek all around without open device support. I still like their candybar design though, but the premium isn't worth it.
What phone would you suggest for around £200 - £300. I'm thinking maybe a Motorola G8 plus but is there anything better.
My last two phones were Umidigi phones but the first one the Umidigi C Note has a defective Digitizer at the bottom quarter of the screen and the one I'm using to type this the Umidigi Power has a dead ear piece which died after four months use. So I need a new phone.
What would you suggest?

I love Sony with its elegance usually.. But the phones seem to have rather mediocre user reviews on amazon sometimes. I wonder why that is. I'm gonna chose between this one or an iphone 12 mini used.

I think I will buy this, I have only had cheaper Xperias for a couple phones now, but this has glass screen it seems, that`s a major turnoff for me. Why can they not just use plastic, I will still buy it, since it is the phone I am used too, but it will be interesting to see how it holds up.
The phones also just gets bigger and bigger, I remember it was all about having the smallest phone...

Hi i just got today the redmi 9a for 120euros in Greece. So personally i dont get it why people get so obsessed with high specs when the results are the same. You do the same thing browse the Google what so difficult about it . And mostly those who play games they do as well play on PlayStation. Its like having a car let's say toyota and you get crazy addicted to get a BMW triple money same shit

i like this design very much, but it ended up being just another underwhelming, underspec, overpriced sony phone. such a shame since even samsung started to take budget smartphone seriously
I just bought one. It feels like I bought a google phone. They try tricking you to signing in with google at the beginning, and there's a big google search bar at the home page that bounces about, so annoying! God I just wanted a phone, but it's full of google bloatware. What a pain!
Need to get a new budget phone. Thinking between Sony Xperia L4 or Nokia 7.2 or even Samsung Galaxy A21sq as they are more or less the same price .

They need to improve the budget aspect of their game others are leaving them behind but I love Sony.
