I've been sitting here thinking about Taylor Swift's 'folklore' and the triangle made of James and Betty and summer girl.... and now I'm diving into that album's proverbial big sister. I'm sitting here musing on the triangle of The Balladeer and Guitar Man and the Background Singer. So good.
Oh my! Your talent amazing, as are your poignant lyrics that capture the BLESSINGS, JOYS and EMOTIONS of LOVE, FAMILY and the difficulties, perplexities, and price we pay for love!
A Masterpiece! You've come such a long way. Every album since "Paper Wings and Halo" is proof that your journey, from writing songs at your kitchen table, after you put your kids to bed, to writing with some of Nashville's top songwriters continues to blossom. Thanks for the music Lori! And thanks for the "homemade" cookies that you dropped by at WUMB back in the day. I'll never forget that day. Shine On.
There is an aching lilt in Lori's youthful yearning of the Balladeer... shedding tumble dryed tears from whiskey soaked years as if she were the "Lady Of Guadalupe"... standing statuesque at the Bluebird grieving for the Comets as they burn up under the spotlight while a lone tear trickles down her cheek to the beer soaked floor.
"The Balladeer" The balladeer waits in the wings Tugging on her dress, tuning her strings All her whiskey faded cigarette blown dreams She brings herself to her own knees with every line so delicate She sings every song that she knows The way that she hears 'em, sad and slow They're never gonna play her on the radio So she hangs in the darkest bars with downtrodden bleeding hearts A guitar man there who knew all the chords Said he needed her to help him find the words The balladeer never loved anybody more It was magic but she worried what if she ran out of the pain She carried round with her, so proud She wore it like a queen wears a crown She didn't know who she'd be if she put it down So he brought her to the river where she could wash the trouble From her heart and let it shine like gold Felt like angels pouring mercy on her soul And the weight of the world, she let it go And she sang for the first time with her head held high and so much pride It opened up new notes in her throat There was joy in every new song she wrote They got a bus and traveled coast to coast Drinking with their friends and strangers and business people called to say That she was finally headed for the stars Or at least the top of the charts They changed her clothes and bought fancy cars Till the guitar man caught the eye of a pretty background singer with the blues Oh, oh, oh... The guitar man cried 'cause he done her wrong The background singer took the next flight home And the balladeer wrote herself a song About brokenhearted dreamers who are searching for something they'll never find Mmm, mmm, mmm...
As the legendary Bob Harris (BBC -UK) says: 'One of the great songwriters of our time.' I anticipated the new album 'The Balladeer' the same way that I have the most recent from Bruce ('Western Stars') and Dylan ('Rough and Rowdy Ways'). And, of course, I haven't been disappointed; three great albums. There are few people that I have wanted to see live that I haven't yet seen and Lori is one of them. She truly deserves a bigger audience for her own albums and shows. I daydream that sometime Lori will headline her own shows in the UK. I have thought of the support act too -Mark Erelli.

This song just blew my mind. It is freakin' BRILLIANT!
Omg everybody should listen to her. Her writing is beyond definition
I get chills whenever I hear this song! Love from Brazil
As a songwriter myself i have to say Lori's unmatcheable. The balladeer is AOTY.

Wow. You did it again. Well done, Lori!
Самая крутая песня.
Only 26,000 views? Shocked, this is really good stuff. Better than a lot of the pop-country that gets all of the attention.
Listening for first time to full album on spotify. Thx Lori!!
I've loved each of these early releases and can't wait for the rest of the album!
I have another fave female vocilist . Joins with Linda, Stevie, Pat. Just great
Goosebumps! Love this!
Wonderful as always. ✨💛
Großartig, Great!!!!!

People are obsessing over Folklore but here I am obsessing over The Balladeer. This is the best album of McKenna in my opinion. 👏👏👏
I listen to this on repeat
Love from méxico
"The Balladeer"
The balladeer waits in the wings
Tugging on her dress, tuning her strings
All her whiskey faded cigarette blown dreams
She brings herself to her own knees with every line so delicate
She sings every song that she knows
The way that she hears 'em, sad and slow
They're never gonna play her on the radio
So she hangs in the darkest bars with downtrodden bleeding hearts
A guitar man there who knew all the chords
Said he needed her to help him find the words
The balladeer never loved anybody more
It was magic but she worried what if she ran out of the pain
She carried round with her, so proud
She wore it like a queen wears a crown
She didn't know who she'd be if she put it down
So he brought her to the river where she could wash the trouble
From her heart and let it shine like gold
Felt like angels pouring mercy on her soul
And the weight of the world, she let it go
And she sang for the first time with her head held high and so much pride
It opened up new notes in her throat
There was joy in every new song she wrote
They got a bus and traveled coast to coast
Drinking with their friends and strangers and business people called to say
That she was finally headed for the stars
Or at least the top of the charts
They changed her clothes and bought fancy cars
Till the guitar man caught the eye of a pretty background singer with the blues
Oh, oh, oh...
The guitar man cried 'cause he done her wrong
The background singer took the next flight home
And the balladeer wrote herself a song
About brokenhearted dreamers who are searching for something they'll never find
Mmm, mmm, mmm...
Thanks :)
I don't know how an album gets better and better each time I listen to it but this one is it.
