Captains of merchant sailboats in the 1800's kept careful logs of prevailing wind speed and direction arranged by the calendar, the records were used to sail routes which were wind dependable. Not sure if any of these logs survived, but if they did, it would be very helpful in planning routes and avoiding becalmed areas. Good show captain.
It is a good idea and has already been done long ago. This information is available in things called pilot charts. For example here is one for the North Atlantic www.waypointamsterdam.com/pilot%20charts/106may.pdf Pilot charts supplemented by weather modelling are part of normal passage planning. I would assume that Barry did all this before he left but struck unseasonably bad winds.
Hi Barry. Stop all this hogwash about your age. You do what most people would find impossible. You are a credit to all us lazy Barstewards. We tend to forget that you are on your own, living on a very small piece of real estate, in the middle of a vast unpredictable and hostile sea. Keep your chin up mate. Keep the videos coming Barry, they always Brighton up my day. Thank you for that. Stay safe
In the face of divisive, you look at a mirror calling it’s reflecting of you in your nakedness back to yourself,a step back in time, but two forward. Always moving forward ✨
Sod’s Law dictates when becalmed and wishing for wind, that when it comes it comes in abundance. It’s like riding a giant rollercoaster of extremes. Thanks for another great vlog Barry, keep safe. P.s. You’re not old, you’re experienced and that counts for a lot.😊👍
Hello sir good to see you yet again , caught a glimpse of you on reunion island with sailing nangi just before they headed to Madagascar ,,,safe sailing stay safe !
That looked tough. I'm sure knowing you have a loyal band of followers who send messages of support helps. Respect to you for having the courage to do this. Safe travels.
Wow that is scary stuff. I hope all is well with your hand. I'm glad the birds liked the music. So sorry to see the sail damage. Wishing you trouble free repairs/replacements, fair winds and decent seas to continue your adventure.
Good to see that you are now safely in Richards Bay, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. What an achievement Barry - Bravo Zulu is fitting now that you are in the home of the Zulus. 👍👍👌
Suggestion Get a current meter that measures the amount of current leaving your batteries. this will help you Isolate any unusual flows and the loss of battery.
Great video! I've been on Lake Huron when it's hot and windless. You captured the joy of it perfectly! The good news is we don't have stinging water here!!
Keep safe I am enjoying your progress and knowing that the current videos are not what you're currently experiencing as in I would not wish bad times on you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Barry. This was a sad video, full of hardship and uncertainties. No wind, low food and water, going backwards, a tired Barry and finally a dead Genoa 😢. Sailing is made of good days and bad days. The art consists of minimizing bad days, anticipating and avoiding to expose yourself. As global weather deteriorates, the number of areas on earth, and periods where sailing should be avoided I am afraid is increasing. After seing the high occurrence of deadly storms in the Med after mid August, last summer I decided to end my 2025 sailing season end of July, in order to minimize exposure to extreme weather 😢. Good luck for your passage to Indonesia and looking forward to the next episode 👋
Wondering weather? Then the reef thoughts? 80 years of age, aboard since 5, and afloat, I still hear my sail carrying ancestors advice “never doubt your senses take action”
Sailed the Arafura and Timor Sea to Yamdena in jan. 90". There was no wind , so we used almost all our fuel. Later on in February, we got the trade winds against us , and set course for Darwin. Great video's, your an interesting guy, and as I've been around there a long time ago, even more so!
Please start that engine, charges batteries, gets you where you are going and it should be exercised regularly in case you need it in a hurry. just an hour each morning or the like.
“Goodly Handsome”! Your new Instagram handle! We watch every one of your videos and they’re great because you deliver them to us in your own unique way. Fair winds!
Jeez Barry, great footage from a goodly handsome fella. Having been becalmed once in the atlantic, way before modern comms, I know how frustrating it can be. Keep on trucking mate.
Barry again I’m on the edge of my seat I know from it posting you get through the mess and a new sail over it! but man stay safe stay cool stay searching 😎
I had the feeling of drifting in a coffin ⚰️ Must be very scary in no wind situation that Penguin that landed on the back of the boat would’ve been in the pot 😂
My good God. The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner comes to mind. Oh, and the last clip of your Goodly Handsome face. That wasn't a bad shot. :) I envy every sailor on UA-cam until I watch some of your videos. It's like...okay, maybe I'm better off in my safe home.:) Good on ya, Barry. You're the sea dogginest sea dog of them all. :)
Why not just click on the motor. I know youre burning fuel but at least male some miles at a reasonable speed.. You would be 300 tp 400 miles ahead..miss the shitty weather too. Good representation of actual conditions.
See you 📡 in Richards Bay, South Africa since Nov 1st ...bet that first beer tasted goooood! Good onya! 👍 Here's an afterthought.... again....why don't your "generous" Patreons get you a Starlink? Somebody missing a potentially lifesaving opportunity here. But then, it IS the interwebs. 🤨
In 'merican english, "went off" means that an alarm started ringing! Or, the gun just "went off" by itself. But My momma used to say the "milk went off" and that was when it turned to a form of cheese. Yuk.
Been watching you for about a year and have loved your videos. Often felt I could be there with you and I could do it. Not after this video this one finally scared me. BUT it made me actually laugh out loud a couple of times seriously. I kept thinking what would I do, cry was the answer. If you ever get in my area, stop in. I am on an island in the pacific called the Big Island south side, the last finishing village in the Hawaiian Islands. I can relate to some of the places you stop, beauty and remoteness. Aloha and safe travels. I like it, not, how everyone tells ya what to do as they are all sitting in their comfortable recliners. LOL also the sunset was the best ever. Don’t go back that way again…
For your ais situation I would highly suggest an external battery system like a jackery or a bluetti. Have it as an emergency backup up ais power. I never trust house batteries.
Sailing: the gentle art of travelling very very slowly to a destination in order to conduct more boat repairs. And still we love it.
hahahaha
I have to keep reminding myself that if I'm watching the video's you at least got through that particular challenge and were safe. Fair play Barry.
Times like these are always good to look back on once in a safe harbour with friends and other sailors over a beer or two.

They survived.
Climate change is making big differences in those previously dependable trade wind routes.
Old recorded navigation globes rare but still exist.

I love it when you give the sea birds a break.
Your videos contain many life lessons like perseverance, resilience. I need these lessons. Thank you❤
You are doing just fine Barry. How would you know you are truly alive if it were not for those days when you feel like shit.
Cheers !
Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Scary!😮. I’m so glad you’re ok.
Time to rig up a drive for the wind generator and get a little exercise in while charging. Plenty of bicycles for bits & bobs.
That looked tough. I'm sure knowing you have a loyal band of followers who send messages of support helps. Respect to you for having the courage to do this. Safe travels.

Barry. You are captain of your soul and master of your fate. Already a celebrity.
You are a star Barry in your own way.

Darwin - sometimes she just doesn’t want to let you go 😁 I don’t envy you dealing that humidity and heat mate.
Another excellent vlog. I want one. Bluetti are definitely products to consider.
Good lord! What a disaster.😢
I am sorry to say I chuckled two or three times, eg when you said you were only about 100 miles from Darwin. You poor bugger.
Love how you managed to make a becalming interesting and what a bugger about the sail. From famine to feast on the wind front.
The filming style and editing are superb!! I feel like I am with you onboard, well done sir. True adventure.

What a video! I don't know how you do it but I'm so pleased you do! No one does it better. 💪
That was nice of you Barry, to let the birds sit on your boat and rest. Good Karma...
Also that joke about the library was too funny!.
🍻
All part of sailing Barry….
👍

Hopefully the gods will be fairer to you soon.
See pup will never be forgotten.

One of your best sailing videos yet! Thanks Barry! Cheers Mate!!! ⛵⛵⛵
For your ais situation I would highly suggest an external battery system like a jackery or a bluetti.
Have it as an emergency backup up ais power.
I never trust house batteries.
That was painful to watch. Flat calms are peaceful but dangerous. Stay safe Captain Goodeley Handsome! 😂
Sky Pups in Captain Davy Jones Locker
Barry, You always seem to be pushing the Envelope😜 It must be Beginners Luck😎
