I love that Marina is never afraid to speak the truth and she articulates it so well
Never would have guessed you’d like Purge the Poison…. The production gives a sense of urgency in the subject matter and the clapping is calling for action, which I think is so smart. When she sings it live people go crazy after the brigde, she sings owning female power and then screams taking back whats ours! On the other hand I thought you’d love Goodbye cause the abrupt piano helps you feel how hurt she was, like going through the stages of grief… the ending gives a feel of weeping 😢 And it was the hardest song for her to write cause she couldn’t stop crying as she wrote it after a breakup that changed her 😢

It will be interesting to watch your reaction to The Family Jewels cause it’s very very very oldschool production, with a lot of synths and upbeat melodies with weird arrangements… but you’ll get to know Marina a little better cause that album is about her family and her experiences growing up… her voice sounds very different as well… and she makes a lot of jewelry references cause her last name is Diamandis which is greek for diamond…. Can’t wait!

@@ashlenamusic i think you’ll like the deluxe songs! they aren’t too heavy on production, whereas the family jewels is kind of a wild card; all of the songs have interesting themes and very alternate melodies and production. i hope you enjoy the deluxe songs for ancient dreams anyhow!!
I was going to say, that part in goodbye is my favourite - was pleasantly surprised when I heard it and TFJ is my fav too. Definitely a nod to that sound.
I think you would like the video for Venus fly trap. She dresses up as all her past eras lol. The man’s world video is also very pretty.

Please check out the deluxe songs. Pink convertible is a satire track, Free woman you heard already and Happy Loner is my favorite Marina song… she’s in her head voice a lot which I know you don’t like much but it’s such a simple and beautiful song. Also I’m happy you liked the ballads!!

Yeah I agree, I love her ballads but I also love the upbeat ones.. she’s always experimenting and creating unique sounds which imo is better than just playing it safe with simple production 😬 I do respect Ash’s point tho
I wouldn’t say “simple” I love a lot of crazy dance music, edm etc. I just think she has a lot going on in her songs that are unnecessary. Just my opinion!

She is so underrated!!! Where are her Grammy's?? This album feels like a continuation of her earlier work. 'I Am Not a Robot' was the first song that got me hooked on her! I think she has German heritage and I can totally hear that 'dark fairy tail' in her songs! Her remixes are great too! I have to agree that some of her songs are over-produced, over-powering her beautiful voice. cheers

Granted, I love just about all her music but that would be my ranking. Love the honesty and I'm glad you liked a few on this album and I agree about Britney, she recently announced she will never step back into the industry again and I can't blame her. But she has been ghost writing so I'm glad she didn't lose her passion completely, that takes some resilience. Loved this reaction, I am STOKED to see your reaction to The Family Jewels. It's experimental but still feels very cohesive.

With Man's world, there is a piano version, stripped back without production
There’s a song on Froot called Can’t pin me down and the lyrics goes “Do you really want me to write a feminist anthem? I’m happy cooking dinner in the kitchen for my husband” which to me is like, I know who I am and I don’t need to prove myself to anyone, nonetheless fans reacted a lot to tha lyric and requested her to in fact write a feminist anthem…. She heard them and Man’s World was made 😍

FINALLY!! I knew that you would enjoy the slower songs like Man’s World, Highly Emotional People, and Pandora’s Box, but Purge the Poison caught me off guard (in a good way, that song is a complete and utter jam)! Now all we have (NEED) left is the Family Jewels!

have you ever heard florence and the machine? if not i would highly recommend for you to react to their discography!! to me lana, marina and florence are the best songwriters of this generation. they started gaining popularity kinda at the same time with tumblr and marina actually used tumblr a lot lmao they were all friends at some moment but marina and lana fought and now they don’t talk anymore lol

Hi, I've been watching your reactions to the full albums invent animate, the plot in you, beartooth, spiritbox and bad omens. I think you'll like the band "imminence". Their latest album "heaven in hiding" is just amazing. If you can't listen to the whole album, then I recommend "Chasing shadows" and "Alleviate". They also have a new album coming out soon and have released singles. "Heaven shall burn" and "death by a thousand cuts" were good. My favorite song from them is "Alleviate". Vocalist Eddie Berg cried at the concert when he sang it, so now he sings an acoustic version with more gentle vocals. Thanks for your videos.

@@ashlenamusicI don’t think it would suit the personality of her songs though. I think following Marina since TFJ her style has always been a little offbeat, playful and experimental. I did want Lana and Marina to collab at one stage but I don’t know if their sounds and genres would mix well
Lana is just boring compared to Marina- her voice is waaay too flat- Marina is more original and takes more risks
@@ashlenamusic gurl just listen to lana then lol. the fact that marina sounds different and constantly experiments with her sound is what makes her so incredible. not all artists have to sound the same, and the fact that you have to constantly wish that the music you're listening to would sound like the music you know you already like is sad.

Agree with pretty much all you say here. I absolutely love Marina's voice, lyrics & melodies, but find so many of her songs are over-cluttered with instrumental parts that over-shadow her vocals & clash with the melodies. Totally am with you that a more stripped-down, acoustic sound would really enhance a lot of her songs. Most of her acoustic versions she has already released I love so much more than the originals. A lighter touch in production would do wonders for her. Pandora's Box is such a great song on this album. Thanks Ash! ♥

Sometimes I feel the same as you: that Marina has great lyrics, great melodies, but the production ends up being either a bit messy or with too many things going on - something you'll encounter quite a bit in Family Jewels as well, so brace yourself!

I don't know how much she is involve in the mixing and production of those song? Their is so much good song on this album, lyrics and vocal are top but some mixes are... not for me let's say, even the sound of the piano on Flower is to low, to dark, like a deep dark old Chamber mini opera :-S So mixed feeling after all, like you said I wish their would be different version of those same song. Thank you for sharing 🙂
