@29.52 You apologised for this being such a long video. I am privileged to live on this beautiful Island; I've been watching similar videos for 30 years & this is THE best Ever ! Thank goodness I subscribed. THANK YOU !!!

Couldn't agree more. I've been on a nostalgia trip for the last year or so and videos like this are perfect for reminding me of the place I grew up, even though I'm such a long way away these days!

I didn't know the Isle of Wight was so hilly. Very informative. Cheers.

It says Caution Ventnor Haven. The Danish word for Harbour is Havn. Some english words are almost similar to the danish words especially up in the North East of England and in Scotland. Really enjoyed the video.

Great video, brought back some happy memories. I grew up in upper Ventnor so know the route you traveled well. Seem to remember the top of the Shute, where the ground has sunk used to be the playground. Thanks for the video

Enjoyed your recent postings re Bonchurch and Coombe Bottom. I left the IOW and Sandown Grammar School in 1960. So the videos are an informative trip home. Lived in the Niagara Region for 60 years. Thanks. David C.

Thank you David. I think over the summer I'll be doing a lot more research so I can make my videos more informative of local history (I've been helping out the owner of one of the museums here recently so have no excuse!)

Those are cowslips (Primula veris) - primroses (P. vulgaris) have short stems.

Lived off Zig Zag Road! Loved The Golden Sands cafe, the Spyglass Inn and walking over St Boniface Down. My late husband decorated a cafe with old LPs and the place was opened by the then children's presenter Philip Schofield. My sons went to St Wilfreds Catholic school. We all used to walk through Botanical Gardens to St Lawrence and have cream tea at the Old Park Hotel. Halcyon days.

Lovely route! I’ve never seen Old Station Road from above. Planning to visit the island in May and look at the bluebells on Wroxall Down. Glad you’ve recorded the cracking bits before they crumble away. 😢 Edited to add congrats on reaching 1k

Such an outstanding video. The transition from the road and pavement disintegration to the beauty and calm of the section from entering Old Shute Field to the return to Ventnor Town was absolutely incredible.
The part from the entrance to Old Shute Field through Coombe Bottom was idyllic and your commentary on the fauna and flora and birdlife (particularly birdlife, and their migratory habits) was as good as anything on a professional wildlife TV programme - I an surprised that you have not been commissioned by a local TV broadcaster to do an “Isle of Wight through the seasons” programme (particularly of the Ventnor area, because of its micro-climate).
As I mentioned previously, I an an ex-IOW resident, and one epic (for me, because I was over 60 at the time) was to walk from Lake to Shanklin, exit St. Blasius over the stile at the rear, up onto what I simply knew as Shanklin down, then veered off to Wroxall, then up a very steep path onto a ridge (never knew its name) and then down into Chale for a lunchtime drink.
If I had seen a video like yours prior to the walk then I would have paid more attention to everything around me.
Best natural history documentary for a long time (probably because I have a personal interest in the area, but lets not spoil my adulation) - more please, don't worry about the length of video (unless battery life is an issue!)
More coffee is deserved - so I have done that.
Simple question, though - why are “downs” always uplands and why are “bottoms” not at the bottom?

Thank you so much Mike - your support is incredibly generous and very much appreciated. I love the wildlife of Coombe Bottom so will certainly record - and narrate - more videos there and elsewhere in and around the Undercliff. I'll have to plan and record a properly structured nature series for the UA-cam channel. At the moments it's all rather ad hoc and what springs to mind in the moment! It's good to hear that the video quality isn't too poor - it's all done on the iPhone 13 Mini with no attempt to adjust settings (I don't know how to!). I'll be switching to a better microphone soon. Anyway, thanks again for your generous on-going support. I'm really glad people are enjoying the channel. Certainly it feels like the Ups when I climb up there from Ventnor Bay!

OK, I need to contact you directly about your need for a better microphone and a gimbal device for a steadier film presentation - happy to fund them (via multiple "coffees" if necessary) - I think you have 2 email addresses for me (I can never remember which ones I use in specific circumstances) ... your knowledge about bird sounds is amazing - I can distinguish about 4 or 5 birds locally but my hearing has been largely destroyed by years of concert going in the late 60s and 70s to the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Family, Ten Years After etc. Have a great day and try to avoid the caffeine overload, particularly on the narrow paths above Ventnor and Bonchurch - Icarus had a big problem thinking he could fly.

Wouldn't be overly surprised if that second wall comes down before they actually fix that first one, at this point. Ventnor really is falling apart of late 😢

Hi, l hope you might be able to solve a puzzle for me and my other half. On the top of St Boniface down, where the radar station is, you can only drive up to there. There is a gate across now. Once upon a time you could drive all the way to the end where the car park is. Any reason behind it? Cheers Steve.

    • @Cornishvandweller
      @Cornishvandweller  9 місяців тому +1

Yeah that gate was initial closed during Covid and NT decided to keep it closed subsequently to reduce the volume of dog walkers going to the end (where Nightjars nest on the ground; their eggs get eaten by dogs...)

@Cornishvandweller thanks ever so much for solving that mystery! We're coming down home in June (early 18th birthday present for our youngest son) so if you're around and about in Ventnor, we'll give you a shout out
