Hi there. On the sweet potato question--you mentioned you planted the slips in manure. That is a growing medium that is heavily weighted to nitrogen. Sweet potatoes do not need nitrogen--they DO need phosphorous and potassium. When you plant slips next year, add BONE MEAL (not blood meal), potash, and for extra root growth boost, mycorrhizal and langbeinite. Sweet potatoes handle being left alone quite well--if you are in drought, you do need to water, but not excessively. Your soil looked pretty loose, but you might want to amend it with some peat moss and perlite--nice loamy soil will allow the tubers to grow unencumbered and swell nicely for nice sized baking tubers. Good luck next year--I am jealous that you are still able to grow cool weather crops into November. I am in zone 5a upstate NY--my beds have been empty and winter prepped for a month. Happy gardening!

Glad you mentioned this. I was going to mention the soil was too heavy in nitrogen.

I did much better when I planted the potato instead of slip. I just saved some from my harvest and planted them the following year. They need 4-5 months to grow. Still not bad for your first try.😊

I think you had the wrong soil aswell also next put it in grow bags as I think your bed was too small...also U need to water them...
You can grow starter's by putting one or two of those tubers in water but not alot just so it is say 1/3 up the container and keep it with eater tub will start growing off shoots pull them off they have grown tall say 6 inches or more then break then place in bottle with water so they get roots for next season...
But read person telling you wrong soil aswell...below...best of luck next year...I am having Sumner now...❤❤❤
