Salmons, from deadIy waters to native river

  • The history of life on Earth and that of fire are intimately linked: volcanism is at the origin of the formation of the first organic molecules and the appearance of life on Earth.
    In Alaska, the fresh water that feeds the rivers comes from the snowfields of the highest mountains in North America and the most active volcanoes. When a volcano erupts, the river poisons the fish. Scientists are trying to understand what may have happened more than 2000 years ago and are trying to find an answer to the salmon's specific behavior: return to their native river when death approaches. On the way to an extraordinary epic.
    Directors: Bertrand LOYER, Jacques BEDEL and François de RIBEROLLES

    Fun fact is all salmon do not return at 5 years. Some 2 some 3 some 4 years, this is so if conditions are not right and there is a die off on one year it will ensure them as a species. Also salmon do tend to stray into other river systems for the benefit of the species...

    • @brianjohnston4207
      @brianjohnston4207 2 дні тому

      @eriks9576 straying creates diversity and is a natural occurrence to prevent too much inbreeding.
      The smolt barging program on the Snake River was criticized because of straying but the Corps of Engineers, local Tribes and state agencies determined that the rate of straying from barging fish did not exceed the rate of straying of Native fish that weren't barged so the program continued.

    Such a shame we must do everything to save these animals before its too late. Salmon fishing season have Closed in CA and AK, it should be shut down entirely and us fisherman, hunters and conservationists need to all fight for the future recovery of our fish and other species.

    • @fredtflail
      @fredtflail Рік тому

      The best thing we can do for Salmon is leave them the fuck alone. Nothing we do is working. Hatcheries, Fishing Regulations, forcing rivers to run a flood levels and they are still declining. We have greatly altered their environment and never gave them a chance to adapt.

    • @islandbirdw
      @islandbirdw Рік тому +2

      Catch and release, barbless hooks only. That way it teaches appreciation for more than one or two meals worth, rather the culture and hopeful abundance in future. Looking at how wild and pretty they are, such a strong life force you sense from them. Releasing the fish connects the angler face to face with the fish. The thrill is palpable 😃

    • @cammontreuil7509
      @cammontreuil7509 9 місяців тому +1

      @@islandbirdw you can do that with trout.
      Salmon use a lot of energy. Catch and release doesn't work so well with them.
      Many don't recover after a long battle.

    • @andrewcallistini104

      What you state In your comment Is misleading and not truthful. Ca. has had some of the best salmon returns In years and has not closed. And AK. never has "closed". Our returns cycle normally within the 5 different species...ie: 2023 for all species was above the 10 year average. Bristol Bay where evidently this has the worlds largest sockeye return and has been setting return record numbers In recent years. Teary and over dramatized "documentary's" such as this only fits a a mislead narrative, not the truth.

      Catch and release sport fishermen accounts for less than 0.1% of salmon deaths. Commercial fishermen using gillnets catches hundreds of times more fish than sport fishermen. But the real problem is loss of habitat. Cutting down trees next to the streams where salmon spawn have a devastating effect not only on the adults returning to the streams but on the hatchings as well because the water becomes too warm without the shade of the trees.

    The narrator is missing the point of the salmon migration. It isn't a sad thing. His every word is morbid. He is looking at it like someone who is uneducated about the whole thing. The salmon migration is a cycle of life that has been happening for thousands of years. Sure it brings death, but death smiles at us all. These migrations are bringers of life! This only seems sad, if you don't understand it.

    Alaska is one amazing place. Washington definitely had the good fortune the Russian Tsarist family decided to sell off one fifth of her real estate for a sellout price . No wonder the U.S. never forgave the communists for taking on the Romanovs for that ultimate deed of patriotism .
    Wonder what the Pentagon would've done if one of the two allowed U.S. political parties decided to sell off Texas ......While now it's attempting to drag the Ukraine into its orbit of influence , with sadly no royal Tsarist family to assist this time.
