I can definitely relate to this. Music is my life's passion and I'm endlessly curious about all things related to playing and composition. That been said, it's very hard to balance a life between passion such vast as music and normal everyday stuff like social contacts. To get really good at the craft of composition, you need thousands and thousands of hours of focused work, not to even mention the lifelong learning and the fundamental musicianship skills that being even an okay composer requires. That's very hard and requires a lot of sacrifices, like skipping events and even losing some friends along the way. Thanks for your honesty!

You should read the book called The War of Art. I also felt similarly when I got my music degree. That book helped me to recapture my passion after 10 years.

I didn't totally think about quitting or giving up pursuing this degree, but I almost went to the point of it only a semester before I graduate. I majored in music education in piano emphasis for my bachelor's degree and that's 4 years of intense pressure and lack of social interactions due to commitment in studying and other music-related stuff even though I was contented that I can accomplish all this, which was the most unexpected thing as someone who's truly passionate in music. The truth is despite after getting a college degree, I never think about pursuing master's degree in music right after and I want to do something outside studying in school even if I'm still processing. The thing is I never abandon my love of music because that's how passionate I am and that's who I am.
Thank you for such an insightful video that you shared! Keep on loving music always in many ways!!

Thank you for this video! I'm about to graduate with a Master's degree in voice, and I'm finding myself to be completely disillusioned with the business... I've been feeling extremely unhappy, and the anxiety I've developed around performing and auditions has become debilitating. I still have a couple more major projects to get through before graduating, but I'm already planning on abandoning my dream of being a full time musician as soon as I'm free from academia. It's inspiring to see that there are others who have made similar decisions!

Truly grateful for your thoughtful and honest commentary about composing since you're very enlightening. As a guitarist playing original music for book trailers, I relate to your reasoning and feelings since I felt the same after studying music in college so I too took a long break from composing but eventually I discovered an inspiring change in the world that caused my drive to compose and perform to take off again especially since I was no longer working within the confines of traditional music courses.
I was free to experiment with ways that break from theory in order to create a more signature sound of my own. So maybe one day you'll have a similar outcome once you've had the perfect duration of a break that meets your personal needs and if that is a wish of yours I hope you get it. Or, if you end up enjoying being able to appreciate and find fun in others' music, that's a wonderful mindset too.

I have a bachelor's degree in classical piano and currently studying for a master's degree. I'm only interested in teaching as it's the only job available. I am lucky to live in a rural area and have good connections with the manager of a music school.
However, I feel like it's not enough for my self worth, and I should also be doing something else. I don't like performing live and everybody seems to consider teaching inferior to playing, even though one pays the bills and the other doesn't.
I want to do something else along with teaching. If I feel like I am not good enough, I can tell myself that I have another profession.

I started with a lot of energie in music. I thought i'm goin to become the next big thing because i thought i had that talent for it. Turns out that talent is also something very subjective... After spending about 8 years in music ( i started on piano, went to trumpet for about 3 years until an injury hit me, went back to piano (although i never completely quit piano) I did begin in classical music but it was only about playing pieces who others made and it made me feel like a fraude in a way. I was only capable of playing what i was learning from a page and that felt like a prison, so i really wanted to play like some people on the internet and feel free. I was fascinating with jazz so i took lessons and really got on that train. until now, after all that effort i stil feel inadequate. In jazz, there is not a straight line structured path to walk on like in classical music so i do question if i should continue this process. It drains my energy because i'll never be good enough compared to what's necessary to be able to pull it off well. Then there is that money issue all the time... i was thinking about the idea of becoming a great jazz musician but that seems to be to good to be true. I see a lot of great artist and they seem to struggle aswel ! i question if that's me but i just can't quit because i spend so many hours practicing. It would be so sad to trow that all away... but i just don't know what to do else with my life if that would be gone...

I can understand why you quit the "making-background-music-in-short-time-under-a-lot-of-stress"-type of composing. I wouldn't ever be able to do that, but I started to compose solo piano music, although I have an organist bachelor degree, but when I was in high school of music, I discovered that I love creating chord progressions on the piano, that was my very first step on the road of falling in love with composing, and after many many years I decided to try to become the best piano-composer I possibly can. I regret that I didn't change to composing major back then, but that regret is one of the fuels that keeps my fire hot to go on with my piano-composer-dream, so it didn't completely go to waste. I wish you joy and good luck with your new path/major!

I've been a working club musician for 45 years - played all over the US and in other countries. I knew that's what I wanted to do and stuck with it. Anytime I thought of quitting, I knew I'd be miserable doing anything else. I think it's either in you, or it's not. A lot of people get into music that didn't really have it in them as a main desire, just a sideline thing with a bunch of other stuff cluttering their life. You can do well at anything in life if you stay focused and keep working at it ... most people look for a quick payoff and when it doesn't happen, they quit.

I'm not sure if I'm wording this right, but thank you for the honesty. You're very strong to be able to decide that a life in composition maybe wasn't for you. I understand somewhat, in this way; I have a bachelors degree in music education, but have yet to get hired for a teaching job. Even during my time as a student teacher, while it was fun, it did feel like a lot of work, definitely a lot of paper work. It's been a couple years now and going back to grad school for music composition, the urge to teach is somewhat diminishing. I feel like I do still intend to teach in the future, but I know the fire for that type of field is not what it used to be. But one thing is for sure. I will never forget the experiences and opportunities I've had in my undergrad, and I know they will stick with me for the rest of my life. Subscribed!

Hi Tiara, I really enjoyed hearing your journey, and I see I am not alone. I am 76 years old and studied music decades ago. It was very constricting. When I was 15, I became severely and then chronically ill and disabled. I couldn’t play the piano anymore because it crippled me. It was a relief, but also sad. When I was 73, I bought an acoustic grand piano and followed my inner guidance to improvise. That was the ticket. I can’t play composed music, but I can improvise my own classical piano music that is in alignment with my body and I don’t have to practice, which I can’t do, because I can only play a certain period of time before my body craps out. I’ve started a UA-cam playlist called The Improvisational Pianist. It’s on my UA-cam channel, Beth Green TV. I would love you to take a look and make comments, if you feel so moved. I also livestream Beth Green’s Magical Piano Improvisations every Thursday on Facebook at facebook.com/GrannyRocksOn, if you have any interest. I hear you - that you are out of the pressure cooker and going on with your life. I just wanted to support you and let you know if a different path where my passion for music has been rekindled and I can finally find my voice through music again. Hugs to you.

The big difference is that you have no choice. You have to give music lessons and you must also work or do musical projects, because unfortunately with only one job, the money is insufficient. While a person of any other career such as, for example, a Systems Engineer or an Accountant, can live on a single job for a long time. These professions begin to teach at prestigious universities or institutions at an advanced age, when they have already had a long professional career and when it is already a little more difficult for them to work because it is not the same as when they were young and had more energy. The Musician, from the age of 24 must start teaching and doing musical and artistic projects to survive because the pay is not enough with a single job.
it is not easy to live on music, in a society that values very little the work of an artist, art, and culture. To start a musical career takes as much time as money and effort, and in the end, sometimes it is a stroke of luck everything. Then the demands of living day to day knock on the door, and you have to decide between continuing to build the "normal and routine" life or building the dreams, which have the same cost and a drought of several years until you stick it.
Doing a master's degree in music is not a good idea because the companies will not pay you more money for that master's degree. A master's degree in music is only useful if you are going to want to dedicate your career to the education industry only. I have a BA in Contemporary Music and I totally regret having invested time and money, because I have not been able to earn enough money to be able to live on it alone. Right now I am in that process of change, because unfortunately, in the arts, in music, and in culture there is no future. Society does not value it and even more so in a third-world country (I am from the Dominican Republic). I'm looking into going to the tech and business industry because with that I can have a better future.
Here is a ranking of the best university degrees (based on the United States economy). Also on the same channel you can see a ranking of the best masters worth doing. In the end it is very important that money is not invested in careers that will not give you back what you have invested.

The skill you acquired from being able to compose so many songs for tv is a great asset. I know there is no inspiration in it. But the skill is profitable. If you distribute under a musician name, and just release all those compositions weekly, you should see money return. Since many listeners are always looking for a new song.

I think that this is unfortunately one of the sad realities of the American educational model applied to the creative arts. Because of the intangibility and immense subjectivity that pervades all aspects of the creative process as well as what qualifies a work of art, the school system relies on quantity to provide as evidence of “work”. The issue of course is that the output of work by an artist has next to no relation to their quality as an artist - by that metric, Mozart would be considered 10 times the composer that Beethoven was. Additionally, in a time where music in the academic setting is extremely niche and advanced, a musician such as yourself who has only had the opportunity to do a Bachelor’s degree is automatically at a disadvantage and racing against the history of music in order to understand the current language and direction of contemporary music so as to eventually find their own footing or ‘voice’. One of my absolute favorite composers of all time, Franck Bedrossian, has only ever published 20 or so pieces. He is world renowned and has been composing since he was 12 (he is now in his 60s). The beauty of art is that you’re allowed to be extremely critical, precise, and meticulous in your art-making (youre allowed to be Beethoven!) The problem is that academia in the west, modeled after stem related research and international corporations, do not encourage that type of behavior.
If I can give any advice, it would be to take some much needed time off and instead just listen to music. We often forget as composers that we learn far more about our own music from listening to others than from writing it down. Reground yourself in your math and enjoy teaching! I hope (and I’m sure) that there will come a time before long where you’ll find yourself taking out the ruler and writing a treble clef again. Best to you!

I was thinking of finishing my college degree in music composition. I went to college 18 years ago for piano performance and music composition but I could not finish because my debt got up to almost $100,000 and I got scared of the debt so had to drop out and find a job. I now have been teaching piano for about 15 years and I am studying theory to become a better composer and I compose usually only when inspired. I do have a private composition teacher and he has his doctorate in music composition and he said that I would be forced to compose things I didn't like if I went to college for this.
Lately I feel really bad I didn't finish my degree. I I just feel like there's an empty puzzle piece to me because I never got to finish my studies. Is it worth it to finish my composition degree? Maybe I can get really really great at composing and then get a scholarship to finish my degree. Then I wouldn't be going into massive debt again. I did really enjoy college while I was there. Will finishing the degree help me in any way other than just having that feeling that I "did it! I got my degree!" Will it help me gain more students in my private studio when they hear of my education? Also, if studying composing at a college may be a bad idea for me maybe I could go back for piano performance. Would that be better? Then I could perhaps charge a little more for lessons.
What do you think? I am sad I didn't get to finish up my degree/s but I don't know if I should.

Info for those would usually get sent out through listservs, I’d sign up for a ~10 min interview, then send the director some samples of my work. “Commissions” is a little misleading because most student films don’t pay anything. I guess if I had any advice, it’s try not to get discouraged if you get rejected. I was rejected by sooo many directors, but if you keep applying you’ll eventually get an opportunity and the more films you have under your belt, the easier it is to get more

I agree i feel like in college they teach you to be a worker and not a thinker i hate how they dont teach you how to market and sell music. its true your always your worst critic. And the music degree is very demanding and i work 40+ hours a week and night shift i dont have 5 hours a day to play guitar and piano. it was a pain in the ass i didnt have much time.i took it to enjoy it rather than trying to be the best guitar player or pianist etc. i agree though school sucks haha i hate the gen eds the gen eds are useless anyways theres plenty of musicians who probaly failed math english and history science etc and still went out and sold records. I get a discount for working at my college so i took it to enjoy it. College makes you feel so pressured and stressed and when that happens you dont have fun with it

I can relate, although I think we're both a little like Billy Joel's "James" in reverse. ua-cam.com/video/qwxwWVQN_Yk/v-deo.html I'm happy for you that you've found something more promising as a profession after ruling out music. I hope you've found a way to continue to express your musical self also. Happy 2023!!

"CLEARLY", YOU DON'T HAVE THE DESIRE FOR MUSIC 🎶 IT'S PROBABLY NOT YOUR BAG!!! "I", HATE SEEING THIS VIDEO THOUGH. 'CAUSE, YOU MAY "DISCOURAGE", OTHER PEOPLE WHO AREN'T THAT STRONG IN THEIR COMMITMENT TO MUSIC 🎶 , YOUNGER PEOPLE WHO MAY LOVE MUSIC "MORE", THAN YOU FOR INSTANCE. COME TO THINK 🤔 ABOUT IT, I ACTUALLY DESPISE PEOPLE LIKE , "YOU"; FIGURE OUT WHAT "YOU" WANT TO DO "YOURSELF", "FIRST" YOU OR YOUR FAMILY BEFORE TALKING DOWN OR SADLY ABOUT ABOUT WHAT ANOTHER PERSON COULD BE DOING, "PLEASE". "WHO", ARE YOU AGAIN?!! ..... THIS VIDEO IS, "POISON" 💀💀💀💀💀 "UA-cam", SHOULD TAKE IT DOWN.
