- Kiribati could soon become uninhabitable due to climate change. Residents are using all available means to protect themselves from rising sea levels.
In Kiribati, residents are building walls to protect their homes from rising sea levels - which worked well for a long time. But the high tides are getting more extreme, resulting in what they call ‘king tides.’ Now, walls are no longer a permanent solution. So how can Kiribati be saved? There have been discussions of an artificial replacement island or filling in some of the 33 islands. But, even though the disaster has been looming for years, these solutions are only theoretical. And the government has remained tight-lipped on which solution it prefers. Meanwhile, residents are repairing their walls and hoping for support from overseas. A report by Luca Schmitt-Walz.

Mangrove is the answer. they can tolerate salty environment, they grow fast and their roots capable of accumulating mineral and particles from sea water thus making the water clearer and creating a new land in long term, in addition to that mangrove forest can act as a breeding zone for many marine animals.
how can a mangrove prevent the rising sea water?
@@Sammyduo214 mangrove are an excellent way to provide stable ground substrate. the reason being in their dense root structures stabilize substrate from erosion. Many marine habitats have mangroves that help against storms. they act as a natural breakwater.
We've tried that. It's not easy for the plants to take roots. Fyi, I live in Kiribati.

And the good thing is that not only the negative aspects are shown but also the positive ones where residents take initiative.
I sincerely support efforts to make the islands secure.
Increased planting of mangroves and plats that produce lots of biomass can help keep erosion away and also add soil to the surface.
But it needs investment from outside to support efforts (wave breakers e.g.).
Leaving should not be accepted as an option for the residents!

Here in November 1943 there was a very bloody battle fought between American and Japanese troops in the battle of Tarawa that lasted just a few days. 1005 Americans were killed and very few Japanese lived to surrender. So sad that the people here still can't live in happiness and security.
Australia and New Zealand should assist in helping them build resilient environments to learn for the world on how to make climate resistant societies. This year we had a hurricane in NZ and we weren't prepared it devastated us. Climate action should be taken seriously before it takes us.
We need to be creating safe haven for the future of these residents, the islands will very likely be gone in a hundred years. Now is the time to start tackling this obstacle. Right now.
It will take us anyways. There are way too many people on this planet.

@@realkevenzelaya Carbon dioxide doesn't drive temperature.. In fact, farmers pump it into their greenhouses for better yields. This whole thing is propaganda.
Needs plenty more mangrove trees and coconut trees, cheap rock imports also, either from the sea bed or from other volcanic Islands. That should increase and maintain the organic foundation above sea level. Takes money too but at least it could be the one with the lowest cost. And it will attract plenty of ecotourism
Very sad situation with rich western nations ignoring their plight, I remember people putting up tide barriers when I was on Tarawa back in 2000 and salt water was seeping into the fresh water ground wells back then. Kiribati is not alone, neighbouring Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands also face the same problem.
Could mangroves help?
It is always scary to leave home, but with climate change and the inevitable sinking of places like Kiribati, it would be stupid to remain and it would be smart to prepare to move out at anytime, moving to places that are racially and culturally related would be a start, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Madagascar are a few places that are options for them, preparing to move out while they still can is imperative, not when nature forces them to move out is the moment they prepare for a new life somewhere else.

Making an appeal to history, we can learn not to repeat history. Currently, China and India are producing more greenhouse emissions than the US. A developing country, India, has the world's largest population. They are just getting started! It's crazy to think about. In 1000 years, everyone will be Hindu 😂
I lived and worked in Kiribati for over 4 years from 2012 ... planning for the effects of climate change had been going on long before that ... and every time people complain about their government spending too much money on "foreign aid" ... it's people like the I-Kiribati who pay the ultimate price.
They need to work out how to stop the earths cycle......its been happening before us humans lived on it.....Sell a story long enough and eventually someone will buy it....
I am sure that we will act but I believe it will be too late then...

I would bet that land subsidence is more to blame than sea level rise, but they have a problem anyway. They need to raise the land faster than it is sinking.
I lived and worked in Kiribati for over 4 years. The atolls are on top of ancient volcanoes and are not subsiding. I witnessed at least 8 metres of one island disappear while I was there, and that was on the leeward side of the island where the island was built up centuries ago by sand. There is a lack of materials to raise the islands. Road metal had to be shipped in just to make a durable main road on Tarawa.
What about mangrove forest
Its also the same here (Philippines) though I do not live really near the sea (its a 40 minute drive) but whenever I go there I noticed that the sea seems to be closer than ever from the sea walls and has gotten deeper.
This process is irreversible, This is multiplied every year, This will reach to every country!

Which is a great idea, but then means diesel needs to be shipped to the island. Kiribati relies heavily on imports, including fuel.
Diesel needs to be imported, and burning it contributes to climate change. They do use solar pumps in some areas, but that requires money ... of course, if countries supplied large amounts of solar pumps ...
That would only contribute to the issue we're trying to resolve, besides, we here in Kiribati appreciate hard work and never back down from struggle.
This affects first the people who had no impact.
We drive our cars in the Western society and this will destroy the lives of people's thousands of miles away.
They do contribute, but not nearly as much. They still use modern conveniences.
Why just the West? Currently, China and India output more CO2 emissions than the US. The only logic in making an appeal to history is by not repeating history. It isn't meant to hold people living today accountable for the past.
It's absolutely insane that the propaganda has convinced each individual that it's their fault and they must change - vs. the actual purveyors of pollution in the corporations and gov. militaries/war.
We are emerging from an ice age. The planet is warming. That is all. All else is propaganda. We need to focus on pollution, not taxing with carbon credits and upward transfer of wealth. We don't need to chastise people for plastic straws and driving to work. These green 'solutions' are environment-destroying and only enrich the corporations.
Humans have been dealing with massive ecological changes since the dawn of humanity. It's called migration. It's normal. So what.

@@ADUAquascaping so true. Why just America or the west when China and India emit more CO2. Here in the US. we are already paying a lot of taxes, especially in California. There are taxes for everything and every utility is charging a carbon tax. Our governor here is saying we will have net-zero emission by 2035 but what is that? It doesn’t mean that we will not be emitting anymore CO2 but we are buying carbon footprint from China, India and anywhere in the world where there are more pollutions. It’s about the money being made but really not improving anything but enslaving us to pay more taxes and punishing us if we don’t buy EV vehicles before they finally ban the selling of gas-powered cars in 2035. But get this, Newsome said that he is mandating that only EV and plug-in hybrid will be allowed to be sold after that. Hahahahaha! I looked at the hybrid plug-in, it still uses gas but with a battery with a maybe 40 mile trip for a charge which means you still have to use the gas to power the car. Isn’t it crazy?

We go to the doctors. Sometimes we use herbal remedies that had been passed down through generations. It's pretty effective in treating the common flu, etc. However, we cannot guarantee that it will work against new diseases like COVID.
They should ask the Chinese for help in exchange for military bases. That Way the west can choose if they wan't to something about it. Excellent levarage that could give them good help.
China has been helping ... it's only the US that's interested in building military bases.

Dutch engineering firms have tried “helping” Bangladesh through world bank sponsernd projects by building polders but using outdated practices they don’t do in their own country anymore because it’s cheaper but leads to increased flood risk over the years.

They just want to scoop up funding from the world bank and abandon the project once the bare minimum is done

To get help I think you are expected also to give something back, unfortunately that is how the world works...there are few countries that have the capacity and technology to keep the water at bay such as the Netherlands..

Provide funding initiatives to introduce the planting of mangrove trees to form dense forests that can help with the islands erosion!!!
The GDP of Kiribati is about $300 million per year. A single billionaire could change the future for an entire people, but of course you have to be selfish to become a billionaire in the first place...
Human need to understand that they have to have the Power to understand that clean ups are already scheduled well in advance of human existence. If you stay on a sinking island then you too can sink. Spirits know that Change is here and we have to get on the migratory schedule. Humans are defiant, while those that Love know why this is a best way to see the Future we have all been waiting for. I remember in our Environmental Science class my teacher brought up this debate if-
" the 1st world countries such as America should be fined everytime a catastrophy (Typhoons primarily) hits us here in the Philippines which is a 3rd world country."

New York is soon going to be 'sinking', did u see and acknowledge what hurricane Sandy in 2012 does to it...? even US navy once proposed a plant to built a seawall around Manhattan so to make 'mini Netherlands' of it so the city is 'safer' from flooding and rising sealevel risk because of Global warming.

Since the oceans have only risen 6 inches in the past 70 years I’d say it’s more likely this island is sinking than being submerged by rising sea water.

So true. The depleting of their water table is being replaced by the sea water. Blaming climate change for everything doesn’t make sense at all. When there’s a low tide, they should shore up their beaches. The people of the island have the responsibilities also of taking care of their environment. Someone said about planting mangrove. They can do a lot more than asking for help from others. Or maybe they should just move to a more viable place where they can survive more than staying in the island.
@@merlie1254I’m genuinely asking though, their ancestors have lived on these islands for years but only in the past 30 years have they been seeing this problem. Are you trying to say they stopped taking care of their island ? Because this isn’t just Kiribati but also Marshall Islands and Tuvalu, a lot of their islands are small atolls where most of the population lives off of the island. This video in particular is in Tarawa which is the main city of Kiribati, the other islands in Kiribati probably live a more remote lifestyle yet they still face the same challenges. I think this is beyond their control
@@santospaul8103 think about it though. Although it’s their island, they are using the small resources that they have by increasing population and not really thinking about how to sustain themselves. I’ve watched several videos like this about the small islands that are losing their shores but not really thinking on how they can help to defend from the nature. They are set on blaming it on climate change. Of course the water will be hard to replace anymore unless they put desalination but that is too expensive to build. So I think the only way they can continually survive is to move someplace else and abandon the island. Those small islands are not meant to be lived on forever as what I had stated. Sooner or later they will be taken over by saltwater.
All these island micronations lack strategic depth. The ancestors were not so wise in choosing to settle there.
All these micronations exist because they can sell their vote in the UN to bigger players. This is the main reason why these nations have got independence. In fact it could be better for them to be a part of some bigger and more developed country.

I feel bad but the reality is it's not going to stop, so either get funding from governments or non profits and think about how to build a floating town or a town on stilts or find a new home........that's just reality.

2. Greenify the ENTIRE nation energy sector NOW. It's do or die.

Kiribati needs a China built airport so that the population can fly away to Australia to be resettled.
IF you look at the map, they got enough island there. Just their whole village is in worst spot possible. If they get the money, it will maybe extend their life there 15-20 years max. They need to relocate their village to higher ground! And rebuild everything and whole island, it means there will be no soil just sand! So in the end they will live in fancy house which is located in a desert, while asking money for everything else then fish. (rebuilding island is just digging sand from sea and making island higher) Not much grows in pure sand, soil they have now, has slowily accumulated there over 1000's of years.
The highest ground on Tarawa is around 2 metres above sea level, and that place is not very big. The atolls essentially are sand ... made from years of erosion by the sea. There is no "sand from the sea" to dig.

You can google maps Kiribati, and see the wall and city yourself, can't see the height or soil from map!!. The middle part look something they could dig sand/ground from.
Overall, the problem stays the same, It will be massively costly to do anything there. They mention "other nation rebuild island or even create them, they just need funds - china/saudis". But those are not permanent living islands, they just part of big country. Even if they build higher ground, it won't fix much. They got nothing else there. Instead, they should get funding to relocate to some bigger island or even Australia, into own city.

I was on Fanning island just before COVID. Wonderful place, great people, who were very happy. I didn't see where they have to worry about rising sea levels. They are plenty high. I don't think we should make these people worry over their future. Let them live in peace.

Rubbish shipped there by Western countries exploiting Kiribati as an "emerging market". Everything the locals ever had before the West arrived simply was thrown on the ground and recycled naturally. Perhaps a better idea would be for all those that shipped all their crap to Kiribati, to come back and take the wastes away. The country has no infrastructure for dealing with Western wastes.

Cloud seeding aircraft can help increase the rain. Coconut water is a great water substitute. It can be used as an emergency IV to rehydrate. I saw a lot of coconut trees in the video.

That's far from the point. The point here, is that Climate change is happening to people as we speak. It's not something that's far off into the future.

You have to seek sources of Food, Water and medicine. It's not easy as I am living in Kiribati. Sometimes, you can't even find a single fish. You have to eat coconuts and trust me, they don't always go down easy, especially if it's on a daily basis.
