Highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games as Mexico's Humberto Mariles Cortes and Ruben Uriza Castro win the gold medal in the equestrian jumping event.
The Equestrian jumping competition at the London 1948 Olympic Games took place at what would now be considered a very unusual stadium, Wembley Stadium.
The Prix des Nations - as it was called at the time - was rightly celebrated as the world's greatest show-jumping test for both man and horse.
Over forty riders from fifteen nations competed on the thousand metre course with sixteen obstacles each with its own peculiar difficulties.
After a fierce competition which included many refusals, falls but also fantastic performances, it was the Mexicans who dominated the events.
In the Individual competition it was fellow countrymen Humberto Mariles Cortes (riding Arete) and Ruben Uriza Castro (his horse Hatvey) who took the top two positions on the podium for Mexico. Jean Francois d'Orgeix (with Sucre de Pomme) won bronze in third place.
Mexico also won the team competition, staying ahead of the Spanish team in second place, and the British hosts who completed the podium taking the bronze medal.

Umberto Mariles on Arete won gold in team and individual show jumping and bronze in eventing. This even though the stallion was one-eyed. Fascinating! Different times, though, the riders were not as specialized as they are today.
In memoirs, General Humberto Mariles says of his horse "Arete" was too lazy as he never liked to get hurt therefore, he won each time".

General Humberto Mariles first competed in Berlin Olympics of1936 representing Mexican Calvary and won greatest amount of Gold,Bronze and Silver awards.

Almost. But yes, equestrian sports stem from military training. Very few military riding schools remain today, like the École de Saumur in France.

La historia de ese equipo mexicano es de novela, Miguel Alemán les había prohibido participar creyendo que harían el ridículo al llevar un caballo tuerto, Mariles desobedece la orden y parte todo el equipo a Europa para una gira continental antes de la olimpiada asumiendo toda la responsabilidad. Intentan arrestarlo en España pero logra negociar participar en un torneo, el equipo mexicano sorprende a todos ganando pruebas y quedando en varios podios, lo cual tranquiliza al gobierno y dan su visto bueno para participar en Londres, el resto como dicen, es historia.

nope, and nope, these are fantastic horses, but the riders miss the point of bio-mechanics, horse can`t jump a 4`4 ft 1 stride at a gallop, that`s why they refused

Yes, you're right. It was 1948, they didn't know THAT much about horses as we use to do now. They still had to learn how horses "think/work" 🙂 ( but the clapping and stuff could have been a factor too 😉)
Maybe the saddle or the rider
It wasn't olympic level as usual. It was 1948, and most riders had just come out of the war. They only had a few years to prepare themselves and their horses.
Also, the shoeing as you can see in this clip, was very rough, and not as accomplished as today, same for the saddles. They rarely actually considered any fit.
Note that Mariles deliberately jump into the water. Everyone who accelerated to jump cleanly over it could not re-collect quickly enough and had faults at the nextfence. Marilee had a few fences inhsnd, so he did that at the water and took the faults he could be balanced and jump the wall cleanly. Also, that horse only had oneeye.

1-2 in individual jump for Mexican riders, 1st in Prix de Nations, and 3rd in the 3 days event. A memorable achievement that all Mexicans ought to keep in mind.

El equipo fue un orgullo para México en su tiempo, no sólo en 1948, sino hasta ser disuelto. Aún en 1956 y 57 Mariles viajó con un equipo civil a la gira de Harrisburg, Nueva York (Madison Square Garden) y Toronto (Royal Winter Fair) y obtuvieron los últimos triunfos.

Antes del inicio de la final del torneo olímpico de futbol de Londres 2012 el "televiso" Javier Alarcón se refirió a este evento..."Para México Wembley es un amuleto pues 64 años antes aquí el General Mariles obtuvó para nuestro país la medalla de oro en equitación"... La historia ya se la saben.

Efectivamente en ese estadio Mexico a conquistado 3 de las 13 medallas de oro que tiene, 2 ese dia de la clausura de los juegos de 1948, y una por la selección de futbol en los juegos de 2012.

Mexican horses are like sons to us but more importants, hahahaha that horse will never ever fail even totally blind. because he was so much loved by his owner.

Oh my god! And not in a good way! Those poor horses, I've never seen so many falls in a competition before!
Well back around this time, many did not know how to keep their leg still, in matter of fact, most barely had a solid leg on their horse (if you notice after the first refusal shown) and were always in their horses mouths, and they never really sat back giving their horses the chance to refuse. but you got to hand it to them, these jumps are massive!!!
The 2 dislikes are from the silver & bronze medallists, rt?

They were excellent then and they are excellent riders now. Although we don't get a chance to see Mexico's riders often, they are very skilled.
