BUYER CAUTION: Since posting this video, I have been made aware that the sealant MAY potentially not adequately reach puncture sites on foam-filled tyres. Use with caution.

Had a flat up on Central Coast. Not great experience getting a Tesla temp replacement to whole day plus week to replace tyre. Have a kit. But that experience convinced me to buy a spare tyre and wheel which I have strapped in the boot plus a low profile heavy jack in the frunk. Peace of mind. And yes there is still space for the groceries and impact on range negligible.

  • @zagan1

There's other kits that are way better than spraying a glue into a tire.
If you use this you are expected to replace the tire straight away, as you can't refill the tire with air once you put in the glue.
But a 4x4 puncture kit is way better, as its a thread of material that seals with heat and handles highway speeds.
And can last for a long time.

Whilst tyre is flat, you didn’t explain operation of sealant. Once clear tube is connected, how much sealant do you insert in tyre and how long does it take. Do you immediately inflate tyre after. Is the machine only good for one operation since tube etc is full of sealant.

  • @brett7801

Don't recommend using this system unless absolutely necessary. My Audi has it, and I had to use it.
It worked, no problem there. But the tyre shop I visited to get it replaced was not impressed. I had to leave the car overnight so the tyre could drain. (They drilled holes in it)
It still made a mess of the workshop when they took it off the rim.
Thankfully they didn't charge me any extra.
So in addition to a new tyre, I was also out of pocket for a taxi to and from the tyre shop, and a new tyre mobility kit. ($250ish I think)
I would have been better off using road assistance and I now carry a space saver tyre in the boot also.

The liquid guey stuff will have its limits sealing tyres as do plugs have. But it is very convenient when it works. As a country driver I do prefer a spare wheel. The frunk of a Nose Cone RWD can hold a spare tire with minor mods. A BMW X5 space saver wheel (2nd hand Ebay) fits for the Model S but you need to change the tire (expensive) to get the same outer diameter. To lift the car I use a 2.5 ton 85 - 385mm low profile jack and a jack pad. The torque of the wheel nuts is quite high (175Nm on my car) and I carry a long 21mm socket plus a torque wrench for leverage and tightning to specs. Perhaps an overkill for most but I do travel inland a lot and it is a peace of mind thing for me.

FYI for LR & P OWNERS: AFTER SERIOUS RESEARCH
The sealant method will not work with tyres with noise cancelling foam. This is as the sealant will not reach the puncture on the rubber as it will be absorbed by the foam.
Some Tyre shops even charge more to get the tyre removed if you do use it prior !!

An admittedly severe puncture in an an almost (less than 200k) Continental, so congratulating myself on my foresight, out with my Tesla puncture repair kit. Compressor worked fine, but I could not get the sealant to work. Checking the instructions (when things don’t work) to be advised that you should not rely on the sealant if its use-by date has passed. Purchased the car in 12/19 and bought all appropriate accessories shortly thereafter. On examining the sealant container, I find that it expired on 12/17, more than two years before it was sold to us. Checking with my local Tesla service centre, they had two replacements, and when we looked, they had expiry dates of 12/18. Piss poor effort Tesla.

I'm thinking that a better solution might be to buy a good portable 12V DC compressor that you could also use on a regular basis to top off your tires when the pressure is a little low, as mark123655 has said. Then, if you ever needed to inject a sealant, you could connect that compressor to a can of Slime or Airman sealant. Myself, I think I would inject a sealant only if I couldn't plug the tire or couldn't get expeditious roadside assistance. FutureSystem has mentioned that a bit of strength may be required to plug a tire. I have a neighbor who has acquired the Stop & Go 1075 tire plugger. That kit supposedly makes it a bit easier to plug a tire. Can't vouch for that, since I haven't used the kit myself. But, FutureSystem, it's something that you might want to look into.
