    This is actually an awesome way to swatch!! I hope you keep doing it. I don't mind watching people swatch squares, but it can get a bit boring (mostly for myself when I get new colours), so for sure this is a fantastic alternative. Great video and also love how the tiger turned out! Thanks for the inspiring idea.

    What a novel and FANTASTIC idea, using the color-wheel approach just in general and especially in swatching! I have to say this: You have grown so much as an artist here on UA-cam more than any other artist I've been following for the last three years I've been retired and "studying" watercolor. Hats off, I'm impressed, and it takes a lot to say that. I currently follow just a few pros I respect, and I always check out your unusual product and pet videos (my interest), but I've been highly impressed lately with your meteoric rise in all areas. Go get 'em, girl.

    So beautiful! The company should use your painting on their product's packaging! A tiger is a tough act to follow, but how about a butterfly, raccoon, or an owl? Or perhaps a red panda? I love all animals, and you paint them all so well. ❤

    We all have our preferences, but I am on the “I hate to swatch my pigments“ side of the fence. You’ve found a wonderful way to swatch materials with this tiger drawing. I’ve never said the words “I love what you’ve done” before on a swatching video, but I’m saying it now! So nice! Maybe the next time I have to swatch pastels on a toned pastel mat, I’ll try drawing a tree with different colored branches.

    Thank you, Emily. This was a great video. You’ve discovered such a creative way to swatch out colors! I love ❤️ QOR paints and how well they flow and after seeing your demonstration, I hit your affiliate link and bought them (there were only 8 left when I did this afternoon so hopefully others are trying them out too)! I think Golden has the best online swatch samples and information about their paints. I have the 24 tube set of QOR and love them and these paints will be fun additions. It makes total sense that you can’t get deep values from Ultramarine Pink and Cobalt Teal but that is just the characteristics of the paint - you wouldn’t expect to get dark values from a Lemon Yellow either - lol 😂. That reviewer must not have been familiar with those colors. As far as the palette is concerned, I love it! It’s so innovative when compared to other palettes. I look forward to receiving mine and exploring these paints. Thank you, Emily!

    Hullo Emily, I have found some inventive swatching worth watching and I have even tried some of them myself! I am concerned that this particular swatch exercise has not shown a mast-tone nor a wider expanse for a good granulating example. I was hoping for more from the outside area of your circular grid, but there is always a learning curve for new techniques, right? Thank you for sharing this sweet swatching experience with us! I am hopeful that you will be trying out more QoR paints in future videos. I purchased the 24 tube set and it is a good range of these watercolor paints. I got them on SUPER Sale at Jerry’s Artarama a few years ago and they were just so easy to use. I did have a bit of trouble with water control but I am told their new synthetic mediums will travel faster than gum arabic and ox gall. There’s that pesky learning curve again! Thank you for sharing your experience with us and I appreciate your honesty and hard work in creating this video!

    I hope it'll be the next swatching trend. I've been using PG50(sennelier) as a substitute for hoblein turquoise blue in your tutorials. Color wise it's a pretty good match, but it's so granulating and so "liftable" that it's pretty hard to manage when layers are involved or when you want something to look smooth. Still a fascinating pigment. It mixes amazing colors.

    This was great! I need to look back at your other videos and see if you've addressed this, but I find that certain papers will highlight this granulating aspect more. Of course, I'm a fairly new painter and to see that kind of granulation was alarming to me because it wasn't what I was going for! I was using the Stonehenge cold press watercolor paper and it was making colors look granulated that looked more "normal" on an arches or canson paper. I confess to being confused about this kind of thing -- paper choice, especially. It really feels like it changes the painting. With the Stonehenge, I've also encountered areas where it will give that granulated look in a patchy way. I was trying to do a broad wet on wet background color and there were parts of the paper that took in the color unevenly. I think a lot of this is operator error but I would love to hear guidance on paper choice. Thanks!

    Two (of many) things I love about Emily ... "I have no idea how this will turn out, but it will be fun, so who cares" (not a concept that I was raised with, but one I needed to learn) and "I'm going to just leave these like this, because they're pretty" (ditto). I enjoy painting so much more since spending a year in Watercolory Mastery!

    Would you use this brand of granulating pigments in the same painting with other brands of granulating or non-granulating paints, especially mixing, since they use different binders?

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  4 місяці тому

      That's a great question! I do use them together, however I have noticed that QOR paints flow much faster than paints with traditional binders, so you just have to expect it and adjust for that.
