Hi David. Really my pleasure and thank you for watching. I appreciate the positive feedback and means a lot that you’d watch my videos once let alone twice! Sending all good thoughts east. That storm damage is devastating!
Beautiful work, as usual. And the narration I find very stimulating, and at the same time comforting. Because your work turns out so nice, yet you highlight your mistakes as you proceed through. The sunburst glue bleed through, I thought looked like an extra touch of detail against the maple, as I imagined it on all of the pieces. Maybe try "screwing up" on all of them next time.😂
Very fun to watch, great content as usual. I may have a suggestion about your veneer seams that creep open - I have had this happen to me as well in the past, especially on starburst layouts. The crux of the problem is this: the veneer absorbs moisture from the glue and swells a tiny bit before the glue sets up enough to keep it in place. Because it swells proportionately to its width, the wide end swells more so the gaps open up on the narrow pointy side. The way around this is not gluing up the seams, but using a (much) faster setting glue. Urea-formaldehide glue in a hot press is the best, it will set within about 30 seconds. Next best is fast setting PVA, which should set up in less than 5 minutes, even cold.
Beautiful work, as usual. Looking forward to the deep dive videos over at SawStop. I wish the algorithm allowed all your videos to be about woodworking process and thought process.
I'm currently making a desk for my teenage son, and am using your technique for making thin veneers with the platform in the planer. Works great. Thanks for the tip.
Great video dude! The internet doesn't provide a very accurate definition of purfling so here's some fun info. Purfling is the decorative border within the lines of the binding or (outside edging) on instruments. It adds yet another accent on the inside edge. So yours would be called binding in the luthery world.
I just glued up a pair of matching drawer boxes, without any issues, and was pret-ty proud of my boxes. Then I watched you make these, where your mistakes are better looking than my final product. Well, always room for improvement. Very nice video.
Those boxes are beautiful ❤ I work with an old jobsite tablesaw..im on limited cash, and it was free, so there's that. The free part came afterit fell off the work truck at 45mph and gave it a versatile, depending upon your point of view, bend on the aluminum top, kinked the saw thing under it that made it all "straight" and busted the power swith right off...oddly enough the stand made it with minimal damage and is one of, if not its only, best qualities. I replaced the power switch, cut the versatil bend off of the top, and prit'near the entire portion right of the blade, about 6 or so many inches. Needless to say the truck never stopped to pick up the saw..so i stopped, pulled it out from under my bumper and i never looked back, praise jesus...Now I will tell you I've worked off that saw for almost 6 years.. and just figured out how to straighten the underbelly out, so im only out of whack about 1/4" now... I know what you're thinking, I could easily be mistaken as a wood master of the universe, and rightly, you would do so. Alas, I am not. Im just a guy on a seriously strict budget and great googly moogly, have you ever just shut the camera off and lower the lights and stand in the doorway admiring your own shop? My shop is a 8x20 with 78" ceiling on the high side to 69" on the low...Ive been meaning, ok ok dreaming, about rebuilding but im still waiting for one to fall off a truck..Hey, it could happen, you gotta put it out into the Universe..you know the same one I am not a master off? ❤❤😂
I always worry that the perfling will not be robust? enough. Like, I'll get it all finished, turn around and brush the wall or something, and rip a chunk of it out. Great veneer work, the boxes are beautiful! Super impressed with the bleed through repair, I probably would have just cried.
Your narrative is the best Nick, and your skills to me are unmatched. I thought my 30 plus years skills were pretty good, then I see yours and nah, my skills are just poop. Lol. This old man really likes your videos.

You are amazing, man! I love your style so much, not just what you make, but your attention to detail, your meticulous and artistic capture of video of the project, and your voiceovers. Hell, even the soundscape is great! I love watching you, and I was especially surprised to see when you did the purfling, and also mentioned the idea of covering a mistake with an embellishment - these two ideas intersected in my box, as my shitty mitre saw caused hella tearout when cutting the mitres... So I routed out the corners and purfled it. Bam! Hahaha don't stop man, I'll religiously watch everything you put out!!!
Dude!! There are peeps I watch and wonder or ask my self { "self..how would I do that with out those tools?"} With you stuff? I sometimes don't even know how you pull it off with the tools you have. Stunning, beautiful, all those adjectives. I have. yet to tackle the intricacies of veneer. I'm interested to see how well the veneer holds over time. I've always heard "thou shalt use hide glue on veneer" and "that shalt use none but PVA on veneer".... etc. Seems to me like they would all work as long as. you get the coverage even. But I think PVA might work better. Thoughts?
Yeah I’ve not had luck with PVA and the people I look up to recommend against it. Hammer veneering with hide glue is a pro approach that I’ve not tackled, but has been recommended. Looks messy.

Those turned out really well. I mean, everyone likes box... -es, even yours. I do doubt, however, that you'll ever land a hand modeling gig, but don't give up! My only thought here other than, "Finally he used lacquer!" is that you've managed to take basic boxmaking and complicate the snot out of it. When I got ready to attempt my first box (we all remember our first box), I watched too many YT videos, and promptly discarded the kind with the fancy corner pinstriping thing that luthiers fap to... way too complex. Great fix on the accidental lid cut, btw. Also, others might be traumatized by the splinter shot, but I really enjoyed seeing you get penetrated by wood. Okay, I'm done now.
