McGard cone spins to help protect wheel finish when it seats it is designed to not spin. I have also read it help maintain tq specs.

I have the Gorilla lug nuts on my JK. After a couple of winter seasons driving though the salt brine we have on our roads they are very rusty, even more so than the original lug nuts (although not as bad as the ones you displayed). I am thinking about switching to McGards for that reason as they claim to be more rust resistant.

Good to know... I'll definitely be paying attention to the long term condition of these. Maybe it's a good thing I am putting different brands on each Jeep. I can really tell which will rust faster since we will be in the same conditions at the same time!

How are the McGard holding? I assume you used a breaker or torque bar - since you know about that. Did you have any issues with cracking McGard tool?

I bought West Coast Wheel Accessories spline chrome lug nuts 14mm x 1.50 and they are of great quality for $40 for set of 24.

Gorilla lock nuts are great. Rotating collars are harder to remove than your usual locking nut.

Great video! Thank you for showing me the McGard lug nuts. I recently purchased a Jeep JKU and I’m coming from the luxury import world. These McGard lug nuts remind me of my $200 project kics lug nuts I had. The spinning ring at the conical seat are actually protection for your wheel. While the gorilla lugs puts an enormous pressure and scratches the lug holes of the wheels, these McGards will help minimize or prevent major damages to the actual lug holes of expensive wheels. I purchased a set of Fuel D238 2 piece wheels and not many people will spend $100+ on lug nuts; however, I will definitely purchase a set of these once the wheels are installed with the lift kit.

Awesome! And you are indeed correct. After I posted this video, I learned that conical washer was there for exactly as you describe.... very cool design.

Actually, you could not be more wrong. The wheels have an insert in the mounting hole, and the Gorillas do not scratch the mounting holes, and the "enormous pressure you speak of, is 165lb ft of torque, applied by me, via a torque wrench - the same amount of "enormous pressure" I placed on the McGard lug when I mounted them on an F250.
For a Jeep, if you don't buy the spline drive, the cone set lugs do not have the spinning washer. My belief is that the spinning washer exists because (their installation tool is not constructed as well as the one by Gorilla - as noted in the video) the installation tool might strip trying to tighten the lugs to 120 (or more) lb ft. whereas the normal lug nuts would not have an issue attaining proper torque with the normal 6 or 12 point socket.

    Hey,
Great vid…I know it’s 5 yrs old…but looking for an answer to this question. Just got new wheels for my JLUR and as you mentioned in the vid above, some wheels have a smaller lug hole opening (as mine did) so I needed to get spline lug nuts. I ended up going with the gorilla version. I’ve seen some ppl mention that the spline lug nuts along with the aftermarket rims have a different torque spec than the factor lugs/rims… Is this true?
I know Jeep (at least the JL asks for 130ft/lbs) but ppl say to torque around 100ft/lbs when using spline.
I did 100ft/lbs to install them for the time being. But before I resume my normal daily driving with the new wheels, want to make sure I’m doing proper spec without over or under tightening (yes Im using a torque wrench :))
Any input would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

That cone portion of the new lug nuts seems a lot shorter than the factory which would concern me on the seating.

Thanks for the great presentation on lug nuts, I will be picking up my new Wrangler JL with steel stock rims and I wish to replace the factory nuts with black ones. I am not sure which to get but McGard has a good price for the set on amazon. Would you still recommend the McGard black chrome lug nuts? Thanks.

"Expensive".... Not at $105 they aren't. Look up what a set of Project KICS lug nuts cost. But, you also call "wheels" "rims"... so I digress.

Those McGards suck. The metal piece rusts and breaks off, normally stuck inside the wheel.
