Hello professor, I hope you will read my comment. Few months ago I was looking to get into modern and I watched this video. I then built this deck and started playing it and tweaking it a bit. Finally last friday I have won the fnm at my local store with a tweaked version of this deck. Although the meta in that store is very competitive and players use a super super expensive decks, I have managed to win the whole thing with this deck. I would really like to thank you for these videos and for your support. The match ups were 2-0 vs Zoo 2-1 vs Green/Red Tron 2-0 vs Jnk 2-0 vs 3 colour Burn The list I am currently running: 2 Collateral damage (so many creatures that leaves the battlefield anyway, so why not a free bolt?) 4 Lava spike 4 Skullcrack (because life gain and damage preventing is a thing) 3 searing blaze 4 Lightning bolt 4 Rift bolt 2 Thunderous Wrath (It is a risk if it was in the opening hand, however it is a bomb if it wasn't) 2 shrine of Burning rage 2 Eidolon of the great Revel (probably the only card that cost more than $3) 4 Monastery swiftspear 4 Keldon Marauders 3 Grim Lavamancer 4 Hellspark elemental 18 mountains Sideboard 2 smelt 2 combust 2 searing blood 2 slagstorm 2 dragon's Claw (The look in the eyes of the burn player when I had this out on turn 2 was priceless) 2 Rachet Bomb (Just in case of Bogles, tokens and some enchantments) 3 Molten Rain (because I love seeing Tron players cry) This list is super cheap and it DID WIN ME THE FNM. I really hope you read this comment professor :)
+Mikel Campbell I don't think it actually was. It's listed as part of the full version. Even in March 2014 a playset of Goblin Guide would have cost $50 - less than the $120ish you pay today, but not cheap.
+Thom Brekke Also Thinks about the price spike of that damn Blood Moon! That card used to be a nice $20 bill to get one, but now the Star City Games has bumped it to a whopping $50! This is all outrageous!
+Camo Hardie You're not wrong! Will say that even if you skip a lot of the expensive spells here - Blood Moon is a luxury in this deck, and a sideboard luxury at that - you can have a lot of fun playing Red Deck Wins. Vexing Devils makes it doubly nasty, but isn't super necessary, and even with it in this build should be doable under $70 which is kindof a steal in Modern!
Just won a 11 man tournament at my LGS with a slightly tweaked version of this deck! my little 150$ mono Red took out a 1000$ twin deck with confidence to secure the win. Thanks for this wonderful video prof! red decks win!
Thanks, you dead on about blood moon. it's price has skyrocketed for a reason. It shuts down whole chunks of the format. 2 Main boarding can just win you games.
+Tolarian Community College professor please help im a little new to magic could you please give me a sideboard for this deck id very much appreciate it.
Could you maybe make an updated version of this deck? The prices of the cards have really changed so it would be nice if you could make a new $30 budget mono red modern deck. Btw keep up the great quality videos, love all of them!
Eleos I know this is a really late reply, but if you're still looking for a mono red deck try out 4x monastery stiwftspear 4x Kiln fiend (win con) 3x dreadhorde arcanist 4x expedite 2x braid of fire (optional) 3x brute strength 4x invigorated rampage 3x manamorphose 3x run amok 4x temur battle rage 4x tormenting voices 2x chandra torch of defiance. 20x mountain It's a consistent 4 turn win deck. It's a red combo deck using kiln fiend and monastery swiftspear. The +3's and +4's add major damage and trample. If you remove manamorphose, chandra and braid of fire, you can replace them with creatures that add mana like skirk prospector for example and the deck would run for around 20 to 30 buucks.
Great video. You are seriously the next big MTG UA-camr. Your videos are well edited, you give useful information, and you make your viewers look at some things like fat packs and booster pack value from the other side of the spectrum. Keep making great videos and continue to help thousands of players.
That feel when almost ALL of these prices have gone up dramatically... Lightning Bolt and Vexing devil are the same, Magma Jet went down; But so many people must've loved your video because Lava Spike, Skullcrack and Shard Volley are like $3 each now, Goblin Guides are $30 each. And Blood Moon for sideboard is over $40 now... Jesus Christ, Modern...
3:12 This point is really valid. I had a mono red burn when I stopped playing around 2010. I started playing again recently and it only costed me something like 20 buck to update it after all these years (mostly because of eidolon of the great reveal, since cards like Searing Blaze, Monestary Swiftspear and skullcrack aren't expensive at all).
You are hands down the most helpful and informative Magic channel I've found. As a new player you're advice is amazing and I really appreciate your videos. Keep up the great work.
I've builded that deck a few days ago and i'm gonna try it on a modern tournement on 26th july. I actually won almost every match against my friends. When you put in the vexing devils , goblin guides and bloodmoon its a very strong deck
I know this video was made a year and a half ago, and at the time Bump in the Night was a much-loved splash, but these days burn is typically red/white, red/green, or, increasingly, red/white/green. Cards like Atarka's Command, Destructive Revelry, Boros Charm and Lightning Helix add a considerable amount of versatility in both the mainboard and sideboard. Additionally, there are some great budget options for people who don't want to drop $120 on Goblin Guides. My preferred budget option was Blistercoil Weird. Its ability to get pumped when you cast instants and sorceries makes it a slower Monastery Swiftspear, and the untap option means it's a viable blocker if you get into a bad spot and need one, which can happen against certain fast aggro decks like infect and zoo. It's not hasty and therefore it's far from ideal, but if you can't afford to drop the cash on the Guides (I don't blame you), it's something to consider. If you're playtesting a deck for a modern tournament and have the opportunity, be sure to test against burn. Burn will be seen at any modern tournament, and if you can't beat it you're going to run into trouble. This is true for other decks as well, but burn is a really great benchmark for how your deck holds up in the format. Here's the list for my own r/w burn (I'm on a budget, so the Atarka's Command and the manabase needed for the green splash are out of my price range, as is Blood Moon now - the Goblin Guides in it are even borrowed!) 4 Goblin Guide 4 Monastery Swiftspear 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Lava Spike 4 Rift Bolt 4 Skullcrack 4 Boros Charm 4 Lightning Helix 2 Searing Blaze 2 Shard Volley 2 Magma Jet 4 Wooded Foothills 4 Sacred Foundry 10 Mountain 4 Wear//Tear 2 Smash to Smithereens 3 Leyline of Punishment 2 Kor Firewalker 2 Anger of the Gods 2 Rending Volley
thats quite good but i would like 2 grim lavamancers instead of magma jet, also this version of burn need 20 lands so i'd cut shard volley, and then of you have money you can buy more fetch and some checklands and you can add 4 searing blazes instead of 2
+Matteo Gorni I think you're right. An ideal/primer version of the deck runs 12 fetches, 4 foundries and 4 mountains along with two lavamancers and 4 Searing Blaze. The differences here are based around my own preferences when playing the deck (yeah, it turns out there's a lot of room to play around even in burn!). I'm just personally not a fan of Grim Lavamancer in terms of how I play, though I do know it's really good.
+Morn also i think burn will change a lot after gp porto alegre where 2 burn make top 8 and the were both running a particular version with 4 nacatl and the same things happens one months ago at scg open and in both events a zoo deck won (this make me think nacatl was banned for a good reason...)
+Matteo Gorni Wild Nacatl is a very good creature, and it's three damage on turn two, which is like the bare minimum of what we want from Burn. However, it also forces the turn one and two plays and is a terrible topdeck. One of the reasons I like Burn so much is because it's a very versatile deck in spite of the vast majority of it boiling down to "throw damage at opponent until there's not an opponent anymore." Not to say that it can't work in the deck, and the results speak for themselves. It's just an option I don't want to take for myself.
Hey great video as always! One thing I really like is how you always promote your local game stores at the end of your videos. That's super important for everyone to remember!
Honestly I think Monastery Swiftspear is almost better since most spells in the deck only cost one in the first place, prowess shouldn't be hard to get each turn and then you're not feeding your opponent land
Tempest and a Computer Most burn lists run playsets of both. 8 1-drop haste creatures? Yes please. Swiftspear is to Guide what Lava Spike is to Lightning Bolt. It's additional redundancy.
Gonna be playing a variation of this deck in my first Modern event tomorrow. So far it's undefeated in my casual games, and once I add fetches, I'll branch into white for Boros Charm and Lightning Helix. Thanks so much for the deck! Now all I need to buy is Goblin Guides, and a full set of Zendikar full art mountains
I can really see this channel take off the more you post the more it will grow :D.Your content is really good keep up this excellent work it will pay off.
Thanks. I'm trying to keep the posts up and am listening to what folks are interested in. The videos are a lot of fun to make and it feels great when I hear I've helped someone out.
I just got into it and its great really addicting and fun . Just started getting into the living cards games and they are great . Great channel and great videos
Good video and I have to agree. Though Red Deck Wins is used to described a red deck heavy with creatures while a mainly direct damage cards referred to as burn. Mono red decks are super fun to play!
I play solely Modern, and have a bunch of decent decks, but still, your amazing commentary sold me on the deck. I already have the singles, and cannot wait to playtest.
Let me know how it works out for you! I've found it to be a highly successful deck, and also a lot of fun. Fast, fast, fast. Got a two land hand? Keep!
One of things I did early on was build a couple Modern decks so that my friends could pick a deck and get a game. They found the format addicting and quickly made decks of their own.
Blood moon is essentially a must in modern. Especially if your deck has anything red in it. If you don't believe me, check out how many blood moons were in the top eight from Pro Tour Valencia. I am not talking to you Tolarian, I am speaking in general. xD It shuts down Fetches (I think), manlands, shocklands, and any deck with greedy mana pools. It is a worthwhile investment, if you want to play anything red or whatever in modern.
Well, when I say essentially, I mean REALLY competitive. There is nothing wrong with not having it, but just don't expect to be playing with the big boys on top. I know the price tags suck, but maybe your budget will open up one day.
Blood Moon in an all-in aggro deck is perhaps not what you want. Spending your turn three doing absolutely no damage can actually be fatal. I've had a Splinter Twin player dump a Deceiver Exarch on me in response, then untap and play his combo. Sometimes you do hit gold and people just flat out scoop, but it's definitely a card one should be a bit careful about using.
I totally agree Red Deck Wins is a must have. It's a great gold standard for testing your decks. I find many new and experienced players make the mistake of building decks out of costly and complicated mana bases or combos. A red deck to test against would save them the problem of dropping big bucks on a slug. Btw I built two red decks one for my friend who wasn't into magic and one for my girlfriend. They both play and love them.
It moves the price up, but splash white for Boros Charm, Lightning Helix, and Wear//Tear, and also take out the Vexing devil's for monastery swiftspear, and you've really got a competitive modern deck
Professor, I know you probably heard or saw on Twitter that I am making a Mono Black Vamps Commander Deck around Anowan, the ruin sage..mind showing us how you run Anowan on a budget? Or maybe some other mono black vamp commander?
ASteelersMidget Luckily there's a lovely new card called Monastery Swiftspear, which is possibly even superior to Goblin Guide in this burn deck, or at least on par. An uncommon worth less than a buck. Enjoy!
Fair Enough. Also Thanks for the recommendation of the kmc hyper matte sleeves. I've been loving them since i got them after watching your card sleeve review videos :)
Tolarian Community College It is a great budget option, but it certainly isn't better than Goblin Guide. It might be on par, at best. Burn isn't like Delver decks, in which you cast a lot of spells per turn, and you don't want to force casting your instants just to pump your Swiftspears.
i have been running a monored for around 2 years now. I based my original red deck on the 2013 digital red deck, but it has evolved. it can take on many decks with confidence now, although it struggles against my friends esper(WHICH HAS NEVER LOST A FIGHT!) it has more than enough ways of dealing with creatures with cards like flame slash. This is arguably my favorite deck right now, although ive been favoring my while black red warrior deck(mardu based). Still there is something satisfying about feeling like you have become the firelord.
+Edward Schramm how has your friend's deck never lost? I'm running a monored and I've only lost to about 5 different decks, most of which sideboard can take care of
ill give you a thought - isocron scepter with counterspell embedded, and thats just his starting stuff. he controls you out, and almost seems to know what your doing before you do once he knows your deck.
If im remembering his deck correctly, he also mills you out, and does things like act of treason then uses an artifact that exiles all effects on the stack, so it becomes permenant. And i was slightly wrong - his deck lost ONCE against a deck that was strong against that deck type, and even then he lost because they both went through their whole deck, he just happened to have to draw into an empty deck first.
I personally like to include dangerous wagers(1r, instant, discard your hand, draw 2) They provide some nice card draw, are really budjet and can be used to replace cards you might not like. I'm personally not running any shard volleys or shocks. I'm also testing with the new chandra and hell's thunder
Hey, Professor! I just wanted to point out a possible update to this decklist - Mardu Scout. It seems like it could easily be Hellspark Elementals 5-8 in a budget list.
I played RDW burn too! but somehow, after my friends changed the focus of their deck into bold defense and push me harder with big fat creatures, I put some greater red creatures into the deck, like 2 Thundermaw Hellkites and 1 Stormbreath Dragon... they're pricey but they're worth of it... the only minus point is that my deck is not as fast as it is before... but it can somehow anticipate big cratures, mainly those who can fly (I still condemn that baneslayer angel.... :p ) nice video by the way! I'll support you!!
A little suggestion for sideboard, exquisite firecraft is a good card against control decks, it's a little slower than other burn spells cost 3 mana but you can do 4 damage which cannot be countered so it's particularly good
My friend plays a similar deck. Two cards that I fell work excellently in these decks are ball lightning and fling, I've lost more times to a ball lightning attack into a fling combo than any other play.
Budget Goblin Guide: Falkenrath Noble, Rakdos Cackler if you're splashing black; which I highly recommend. Also, if you *are* splashing black, why not put in Bump in the night? It's a black-bolt
I started Modern with Burn. Pretty much the same deck except i have R/B and R/W fetches for Arid Mesa and Blood Crypt, and i run Bump in the Night and Boros Charm. Then after burn i built 8Rack, and after that Jund Dredgevine.
I'm really happy you found it helpful. I view these particular videos not so much as deck tech, but more as ads and arguments for the affordability and fun of Modern.
Everlasting Torment is a decent alternative to Leyline of Punishment. I use them in my burn deck, which coincidentally uses a lot of the cards you showed here.
For the fully budget build, I would recommend Searing Blood in place of Searing Blaze. It's much more reliable in a fetchless build. It may not kill X/3s, but I think the ability to keep Searing Blood up as an option at instant speed can be very important. I would appreciate an annotation about this for everyone who doesn't know, as not everyone keeps up with new cards, and I know Searing Blood doesn't get talked about much.
I like to get packs and make decks out of that, i get small booster packs, i also get those pre made decks if it has a card i want on the front, it's more fun for me and helps me practice my deck building skills
This deck as per October 2015, is now $62.00 Still pretty cheap for Modern! But with Lightning Bolt at 2.25, Rift Bolt at 2.59 and Lava Spike at 3.33, people took notice of this budget RDW!
Damn, the prices have changed. Adding to cart everything that's available on a Canadian online card store and just from Vexing Devils and Goblin Guides, the price goes from ~$35 to just above $200!
Tolarian Community College Hello Professor. I have used this video as a skeleton for my own modern red deck and looking to improve it. In the video you mentioned splashing black. Could you elaborate or do and updated video?
I run a burn deck, and I have to say that while Goblin Guide cannot be replaced, Monastary Swiftspear definitely is a contender. I run both. If youre on an absolute budget, Rakdos Cackler is not a bad option. Ash Zealot is also a really good card, having Haste and First Strike. If you can afford it, definitely look into splashing Green and White, both for Main and Sideboard hate. Atarka's Command and Boros Charm are just BONKERS in the main. Destructive Revelry is a MUST for the side, Deflecting Palm can win games on its own, and Kor Firewalker is a blowout in the mirror. Splashing those colors also allows cards like Path to Exile, Lightning Helix, Creeping Corrosion, Wrath of God, Ancient Grudge (to pay the Flashback), etc for the side. And for the arguments about fetch vs non-fetch builds, consider this: if you open two fetches, that is not only two less lands youre going to draw, but also two cards you thin your deck, and burn is a deck that REALLY does not want to see lands past 2 or 3. 3 is the golden number of lands, and once you hit that, you want to be drawing and dropping burn spells for the rest of the game. So using 3 fetches thins your deck 3 lands, leaving only 12 lands left in the deck, leading to a higher likelihood of drawing a burn card than a land. This is especially crucial when in topdeck mode. If your opponent is at 3 life, youd rather top a Lightning Bolt or a Lava Spike than a land.
+uleeno Sure. I run a savage Naya Burn build. 4 Goblin Guide 4 Monastary Swiftspear 4 Eidolon of Great Revel 2 Exquisite Firecraft 4 Atarka's Command 4 Boros Charm 4 Lightning Helix 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Lava Spike 4 Shard Volley 4 Rift Bolt 1 Arid Mesa 4 Wooded Foothills 4 Bloodstained Mire 4 Sacred Foundry 2 Stomping Ground 3 Mountain Sideboard: 2 Kor Firewalker (Mirror, Storm) 2 Deflecting Palm (Affinity, Stompy, etc) 2 Path To Exile (problem creatures) 3 Anger of the Gods (Affinity, Zoo, Tokens, etc) 3 Rending Volley (Twin, U/W Control) 3 Destructive Revelry (Affinity) If you need any other help, or would like a solid budget list, let me know what your price range is, and I could help you craft one.
also with this being made a while ago, whats your thoughts on collateral damage and monastary swift spear? i think collateral can combo well with the elementals and swiftspear can add some extra pressure early on then get saced for a finisher for damage
Tolarian Community College can you make a video about the different formats in magic and the ups and downs of each to help people be educated on which formats are best for them?
I'd like to, yes. I feel I talked a bit about affordable Modern decks and now want to chat about Commander. After that, I'd like to focus on stuff like Highlander and Pauper, and maybe a few words about Standard and Draft.
sounds good, I am interested in getting into Magic, and My current knowledge tells me that Modern is the best format when it comes to value. What is the most fun constructed format in your opinion?
ran 1-3 with this... made minor alterations, swapping keldon marauders with lightning serpent, sprang for Thunderous wrath, i dont know what im doing wrong...
A budget version of this deck for modern is available at mtggoldfish.com in their Budget Magic Series. I highly recommend to check it out if you are interestet in this deck. Seemed pretty effective even without Goblin Guide and Blood Moon.
I really like the budget decks especially for modern being a new player wanting to get into the format. You have two 30$ builds for modern your red deck wins and goblins deck, which would you say is more competitive for fnm?
That's this deck's biggest weakness. There's no way to get rid of enchantments in mono red. HOWEVER, if you find you keep getting shut off due to Leyline, then you can have a creature-heavy sideboard. I am a big fan of Blood Knight, who is a 2/2 first strike with protection from white. The idea is to burn them out game 1, then side out most of the burn spells for creatures in anticipation of the leyline, and then swarm them with creatures. the proc. white on blood knight is really great
Tolarian Community College I was thinking for a 60 deck consistency I would use 16 Mountains! Why do you recommend 18-20? Returning to Modern (and MTG as a whole).
What cards would you add that would make this more competitive? Like I have heard suggestions of using rakdos cackler, ash zealot, chandra's pheonix, and fanatic of mogis. But I am interested how you would make this more competitive if people had the extra cash?
+zieglerr300 The prices multiplied within a year. Modern is surely getting popular, but it's going to die abruptly if the card prices keep increasing that way. Seriously, how are new players going to adopt modern if they can't find the right cards, and if they do, they're expensive?
+zieglerr300 The main reason is they weren't included in the Modern Master Series. Hopefully Wizards will include them in the next MM if they do another!
I don't know how much work it takes to make a video like this but it would be cool to make one of these every third month or so, since the prices can change so dramatically. Of course, I realise that this might not be a realistic request.
Just wondering what was the shock in the 4x shock in the description supposed to be there? With 11 cards at 4 each it would be 44 cards which would mean 16 lands for a total of 60 cards. Also what about searing blood I think its a pretty good budget alternative for some of the cards as well as flames of the bloodhand both are budget.
I played Magic in 96 and quit in 96. I loved Burn decks. I want to play again and decided that this would be a cool deck to get back into the game. A buddy of mine who plays Magic religiously said that people sideboard for red decks and this deck would get obliterated. Is that true in the current state of the game?
Burn is one of the most played decks right now, also due to its relatively low cost, so depending on your meta, it may be possible to find some burn hate in sideboards. Still, burn is a really valid choice, especially if you splash white, and can manage to still win games after the first. I would suggest you to try the deck out, and you'll see for yourself! :)
it does get sideboarding aggresively, which is why i built a version of this deck, but made it mardu burn. Smash to Smithereens is a great way to destroy cards like Spellskite and Dragon's Claw, and Wear//Tear is a good option to stop Leyline of Punishment, as well as having the added bonus of being able to destroy artifacts for decks like Affinity.
Hey Professor :) I started Modern like 1 Month ago and bought myself a Goblin Deck :) (Yes a Playset of Goblin Guide :D) and now i want to try something else to play with :). My question is: Is this deck still playable with this cards ? Maybe add an Playset Eidelons or Swiftspears ? Greedings from Germany and please keep up your great work :).
Hey Professor, what mods would you recommend making if you own the Fire and Lightning pre-con deck? It looks like a good chunk of the cards you had in this video were from that set.
amdnable Nevermind, some guy met in front of a store led me to his car packed with binders and sold me most of the card for a total of 25€. The prices aren't the same everywhere apparently
finally got my playset of vexing devils and goblin guideswas very hard as 5 people are people this deck in my city and bought all of thosefrom the store
I built a green blue infect deck for about 60.00 it is a very good budget deck I have beaten a top tier deck so I think infect is good if you understand it post your thoughts have fun playing I will post the list if u would like
What do you think about adding goblin pile drivers to this deck. I'm considering combining it with rabblemasters possibly. Will also be adding monastary swift spears also. What should I remove/ switch around
+Drumbum2134 Well, this is an interesting question because you can go so many ways with "Red Deck Wins". You can make it a goblin deck or just a burn deck. If you're playing a "burn" deck, don't even bother with goblin pile driver. Rabblemaster would be a fine card, but doesn't feel necessary. A goblin deck is seriously good, but it's an entirely different deck. You may want to consider Shared Animosity, Goblin Grenade, Goblin Bushwhacker, Goblin Chieftan, Mogg War Marshal etc...There are so many goblins to choose from.
you should add 2 Fire Servants only 2 to the burn deck, yea he costly but it pays out in the end and it is funny to add 4 Guttersnipe's and 4 Thunderous Wrath this is a great combo and a funny one to. :3
Tolarian I was wondering if in a future deck video like this if you could post the name of the cards in the description so one could read them all at one time when entering them in.
Hello professor,
I hope you will read my comment.
The match ups were
2-0 vs Zoo
2-1 vs Green/Red Tron
2-0 vs Jnk
2-0 vs 3 colour Burn
The list I am currently running:
2 Collateral damage (so many creatures that leaves the battlefield anyway, so why not a free bolt?)
4 Lava spike
4 Skullcrack (because life gain and damage preventing is a thing)
3 searing blaze
4 Lightning bolt
4 Rift bolt
2 Thunderous Wrath (It is a risk if it was in the opening hand, however it is a bomb if it wasn't)
2 shrine of Burning rage
2 Eidolon of the great Revel (probably the only card that cost more than $3)
4 Monastery swiftspear
4 Keldon Marauders
3 Grim Lavamancer
4 Hellspark elemental
18 mountains
Sideboard
2 smelt
2 combust
2 searing blood
2 slagstorm
2 dragon's Claw (The look in the eyes of the burn player when I had this out on turn 2 was priceless)
2 Rachet Bomb (Just in case of Bogles, tokens and some enchantments)
3 Molten Rain (because I love seeing Tron players cry)
This list is super cheap and it DID WIN ME THE FNM.
I really hope you read this comment professor :)
I'm pissed that eidolon is 12 now. It double it price days before I got my four copies for my red white burn.
dragon claw: the unsung hero of anti burn deck sideboarding
Only $30 for the whole deck!
Oh wait, I mean $30 for ONE GOBLIN GUIDE.
+Benjamin D - Try 40 now.
+Camo Hardie Don't buy at SCG.
Just won a 11 man tournament at my LGS with a slightly tweaked version of this deck! my little 150$ mono Red took out a 1000$ twin deck with confidence to secure the win. Thanks for this wonderful video prof! red decks win!
+Heir of Arminius Congrats!!!
+Gl3n4ufcr4ck
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Magma Jet
4 Shard Volley
2 Skullcrack
2 Searing Blaze
4 Vexing Devil
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Spark Elemental
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Blood Moon
18 Mountain
2 Searing Blaze
2 Skullcrack
1 Flashfires
1 Boil
2 Leyline of Punishment
2 Grim Lavamancer
4 Smash to Smithereens
1 Devastating Summons
Could you maybe make an updated version of this deck? The prices of the cards have really changed so it would be nice if you could make a new $30 budget mono red modern deck. Btw keep up the great quality videos, love all of them!
Eleos I know this is a really late reply, but if you're still looking for a mono red deck try out
4x monastery stiwftspear
4x Kiln fiend (win con)
3x dreadhorde arcanist
4x expedite
2x braid of fire (optional)
3x brute strength
4x invigorated rampage
3x manamorphose
3x run amok
4x temur battle rage
4x tormenting voices
2x chandra torch of defiance.
20x mountain
It's a consistent 4 turn win deck.
You just made my day. Cheers. :)
he was right 3 years ago
willhren, you were right dude!
U right he has 1/2 a million subs now
back when he has 630k subs
I love going back to these old video. It brings me great pleasure and nostalgia
The sideboard alone is about 250$ now
This would cost 10x more today.
@@nicolasfurger1032 This would cost 10x less today since blood moon is 12€ and leyline of punishment is 0.5€
That feel when almost ALL of these prices have gone up dramatically...
+AzizidarkReborn Yeah, it is really depressing. This video isn't even THAT old.
+AzizidarkReborn sorry, did you say goblin guides are 30$? Try 50. Thanks wizards.
+Paradox Smith lol picked my playset up plus an additional one for 30 each
+AzizidarkReborn This isnt even just for burn, this is a format-wide increase. every single deck has gotten more expensive.
+Paradox Smith they are like 30-35 near mint where are you buying cards starcity games?
3:12 This point is really valid. I had a mono red burn when I stopped playing around 2010. I started playing again recently and it only costed me something like 20 buck to update it after all these years (mostly because of eidolon of the great reveal, since cards like Searing Blaze, Monestary Swiftspear and skullcrack aren't expensive at all).
You are hands down the most helpful and informative Magic channel I've found. As a new player you're advice is amazing and I really appreciate your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, that's really great to hear! :)
I love this series. You're 8-rack video got me to build my first modern deck and this one is making me think about a second.
Here's the list for my own r/w burn (I'm on a budget, so the Atarka's Command and the manabase needed for the green splash are out of my price range, as is Blood Moon now - the Goblin Guides in it are even borrowed!)
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Skullcrack
4 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Helix
2 Searing Blaze
2 Shard Volley
2 Magma Jet
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Sacred Foundry
10 Mountain
4 Wear//Tear
2 Smash to Smithereens
3 Leyline of Punishment
2 Kor Firewalker
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Rending Volley
thats quite good but i would like 2 grim lavamancers instead of magma jet, also this version of burn need 20 lands so i'd cut shard volley, and then of you have money you can buy more fetch and some checklands and you can add 4 searing blazes instead of 2
+Matteo Gorni I think you're right.
I play competitive magic since 2004 and agree with all your vids. Best MTG YT channel man ;)
Thanks, man.
Goblin Guide? I think I will settle for a Monastery Swiftspear.
Agreed :)
Honestly I think Monastery Swiftspear is almost better since most spells in the deck only cost one in the first place, prowess shouldn't be hard to get each turn and then you're not feeding your opponent land
It would take a lot to convince me to remove my Monastery play sets from my BR and Mono R decks. They are just too damn good.
Tempest and a Computer Most burn lists run playsets of both. 8 1-drop haste creatures? Yes please. Swiftspear is to Guide what Lava Spike is to Lightning Bolt. It's additional redundancy.
Tempest and a Computer why not both? I love t1 Guide into Taylor Swiftspear and Spike or Eidolon
Thanks Professor! This was my very first MTG deck, and I've been happy with it ever since!
Still play this deck today! Ok maybe not the same deck but mono red isn’t going anywhere!
Keep!
Yay! Thanks for introducing me to Modern.. now only if I can get my friends to play it, because they find older cards OP in comparison.
One of things I did early on was build a couple Modern decks so that my friends could pick a deck and get a game. They found the format addicting and quickly made decks of their own.
Tolarian Community College thanks for the reply man.
Always! I've got another couple cheap and highly effective Modern decks that are going to be posted shortly, so those might help out as well.
Tolarian Community College I will be looking forward to them!
Always entertaining, very informative, and interesting topics to boot! Keep them coming!
Thank you Professor for the deck. Yesterday at FNM i got with this 5th place 3/2. Only merfolk was a problem for my deck.
Blood moon is essentially a must in modern. Especially if your deck has anything red in it. If you don't believe me, check out how many blood moons were in the top eight from Pro Tour Valencia. I am not talking to you Tolarian, I am speaking in general. xD
It shuts down Fetches (I think), manlands, shocklands, and any deck with greedy mana pools. It is a worthwhile investment, if you want to play anything red or whatever in modern.
It does shut down fetches. ;)
a bit over my budget :(
Well, when I say essentially, I mean REALLY competitive.
Fairly new to the Magic scene, and I think modern/EDH will be the main formats I play. This looks awesome to start with thanks Professor!
Thanks for your vid. Gave me new a burning sensation to get myself going on my first modern red burn deck.
Well Vexing devil is now $10, and Goblin Guide is now $30.
Marauders is spelled wrong in the channel description.
It moves the price up, but splash white for Boros Charm, Lightning Helix, and Wear//Tear, and also take out the Vexing devil's for monastery swiftspear, and you've really got a competitive modern deck
Deck is currently somewhere around 50 dollars as prices have gone up. Still a solid all in to the face deck. Might pick it up.
Professor, I know you probably heard or saw on Twitter that I am making a Mono Black Vamps Commander Deck around Anowan, the ruin sage..mind showing us how you run Anowan on a budget? Or maybe some other mono black vamp commander?
Goblin Guide went up to $30...
Budget no more :(
ASteelersMidget Luckily there's a lovely new card called Monastery Swiftspear, which is possibly even superior to Goblin Guide in this burn deck, or at least on par. An uncommon worth less than a buck. Enjoy!
Fair Enough.
Also Thanks for the recommendation of the kmc hyper matte sleeves. I've been loving them since i got them after watching your card sleeve review videos :)
goblin guide->swift spear monastery is a good first turn and so much "budget", and she takes profit from the spell you cast
Tolarian Community College
It is a great budget option, but it certainly isn't better than Goblin Guide. It might be on par, at best. Burn isn't like Delver decks, in which you cast a lot of spells per turn, and you don't want to force casting your instants just to pump your Swiftspears.
maybe they will reprint goblin guide in the next modern masters it will hopefully bring the prince down.
Love these videos. Especially the budget part about it. Please keep posting more.
Deff gonna SUB
i have been running a monored for around 2 years now.
nice video by the way! I'll support you!!
A little suggestion for sideboard, exquisite firecraft is a good card against control decks, it's a little slower than other burn spells cost 3 mana but you can do 4 damage which cannot be countered so it's particularly good
I would love more videos like this for different modern, popper, or other formats
My friend plays a similar deck. Two cards that I fell work excellently in these decks are ball lightning and fling, I've lost more times to a ball lightning attack into a fling combo than any other play.
Hey Prof this was an awesome video. I built this deck recently, but would you be able to make an update to this video for a more optimal guide?
Video on building/sharing a collection would be pretty good
Budget Goblin Guide: Falkenrath Noble, Rakdos Cackler if you're splashing black; which I highly recommend. Also, if you *are* splashing black, why not put in Bump in the night? It's a black-bolt
Awesome way to jump into Modern. Too bad card prices are obnoxiously higher now then they were last spring...
You mentioned to splash black as well. What options should I go with and replace red with?
I started Modern with Burn. Pretty much the same deck except i have R/B and R/W fetches for Arid Mesa and Blood Crypt, and i run Bump in the Night and Boros Charm. Then after burn i built 8Rack, and after that Jund Dredgevine.
I want to thank you this video has made me actually happy to play modern.
Did Michael bay direct that little bit at 0:23
For the fully budget build, I would recommend Searing Blood in place of Searing Blaze.
I’m tempted to try an updated version of this deck against Nadu.
Wish me luck 😢
The only thing keeping me out of modern is the scheduling of it at my LCS. 3:00 pm on Wednesdays. Why?
That would be amazing for me. I work at 4am on Saturdays. So FNM is a no go.
can you make a video on your personal favorite colors, artist, archtypes, and planes walkers?
Sure!
This deck as per October 2015, is now $62.00 Still pretty cheap for Modern! But with Lightning Bolt at 2.25, Rift Bolt at 2.59 and Lava Spike at 3.33, people took notice of this budget RDW!
With sideboard double your estimate.
True, I was just talking mainboard. Just wanted to give an update of the price for anyone looking into it. I didn't feel like Calcing Sideboard
I'm new to magic and I made this deck online, it's a lot of fun and it wins consistently!
What are you peoples thoughts on playing a modern R/B deck with Rakdos Cackler and Rakdos Shred-Freak?
+metalfreekz13 mind sharing your deck(s)? :D
+uleeno Sure. I run a savage Naya Burn build.
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastary Swiftspear
4 Eidolon of Great Revel
2 Exquisite Firecraft
4 Atarka's Command
4 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Helix
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Shard Volley
4 Rift Bolt
1 Arid Mesa
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Sacred Foundry
2 Stomping Ground
3 Mountain
Sideboard:
2 Kor Firewalker (Mirror, Storm)
2 Deflecting Palm (Affinity, Stompy, etc)
2 Path To Exile (problem creatures)
3 Anger of the Gods (Affinity, Zoo, Tokens, etc)
3 Rending Volley (Twin, U/W Control)
3 Destructive Revelry (Affinity)
If you need any other help, or would like a solid budget list, let me know what your price range is, and I could help you craft one.
also with this being made a while ago, whats your thoughts on collateral damage and monastary swift spear? i think collateral can combo well with the elementals and swiftspear can add some extra pressure early on then get saced for a finisher for damage
8.10.2016 bought the cards ( 30$ version ) price is now about 60$
Could you please do a follow-up video for the modern RDW please?
Is there any chance we ever get an updated version of some of these older deck techs?
Seemed pretty effective even without Goblin Guide and Blood Moon.
adding x4 Grapeshot would be a good idea as, spamming is the highlight of this deck and Fling, as you have to sac some one-time use creatures anyways.
I really like the budget decks especially for modern being a new player wanting to get into the format. You have two 30$ builds for modern your red deck wins and goblins deck, which would you say is more competitive for fnm?
Is there some sort of card similar to Blood Moon for standard?
Sadly, no. I would have loved to see a Blood Moon reprint in Born of the Gods.
Also, any counters against Leyline of Sanctity?
That's this deck's biggest weakness. There's no way to get rid of enchantments in mono red. HOWEVER, if you find you keep getting shut off due to Leyline, then you can have a creature-heavy sideboard. I am a big fan of Blood Knight, who is a 2/2 first strike with protection from white. The idea is to burn them out game 1, then side out most of the burn spells for creatures in anticipation of the leyline, and then swarm them with creatures. the proc. white on blood knight is really great
Blood Knight seems awesome and I've never seen it before. Thanks so much for the help and videos!
And Blood Knight is also nice and cheap.
Tolarian Community College I was thinking for a 60 deck consistency I would use 16 Mountains! Why do you recommend 18-20? Returning to Modern (and MTG as a whole).
man i really like your videos! thank you for making them!
The Professor says splashing black would be good, for what cards though? Terminate/Dreadbore? or more burn like Bump in the Night?
What cards would you add that would make this more competitive? Like I have heard suggestions of using rakdos cackler, ash zealot, chandra's pheonix, and fanatic of mogis. But I am interested how you would make this more competitive if people had the extra cash?
I wish i could've gotten a playset of goblin guides for $48, after 1 year the playset costed me $140 :/
zieglerr300 Eeek.
Alex G Yeah, I don't want to be a buzz kill here but Modern Masters 2 was more expensive than Modern Masters 1. That just irritates me
+zieglerr300 I traded two GGs off this guy who's girlfriend wanted quite a few cards in my folder when the GGs were $6 each.
Professor there are budget decks for standard that are really good like white weenie, counter burn
Hey Professor :)
I started Modern like 1 Month ago and bought myself a Goblin Deck :) (Yes a Playset of Goblin Guide :D) and now i want to try something else to play with :).
I was thinking adding black to this deck. What cards you guys recommend that i should add to keep it aggro but also have some removal.
Bump in the night in the main deck, rakdos charm and rain of Gore in the sideboard, if you're looking for some lifegain hate.
thanks Professor,
Though, at my local (french) store it costs 82€ without the full version.
amdnable Nevermind, some guy met in front of a store led me to his car packed with binders and sold me most of the card for a total of 25€. The prices aren't the same everywhere apparently
finally got my playset of vexing devils and goblin guideswas very hard as 5 people are people this deck in my city and bought all of thosefrom the store
Hope you enjoy the deck!
Chupick Nicolas Well to be fair, ive been putting a goblin deck together. its coming along nicely. i just need the grenades and im set i think
Yup, the grenades are needed
you should add 2 Fire Servants only 2 to the burn deck, yea he costly but it pays out in the end and it is funny to add 4 Guttersnipe's and 4 Thunderous Wrath this is a great combo and a funny one to. :3
guys i want to try modern... but some of the cards seem outdated. maybe Swiftspear > Shock?
what else would you change?
can you give recommendations on cards for a modern Black bleed deck?
Tolarian I was wondering if in a future deck video like this if you could post the name of the cards in the description so one could read them all at one time when entering them in.
I'd be happy to. Give me a day or two and I'll post in the description for each of these videos.
Tolarian Community College Thank you very much my good sir.
Love these deck techs! Keep them coming please. How about a delver deck?
Sure! I'll add that one to the list.
cool, thanks
This is a great video keep them coming and you also got a new sub :-)
Cheers, man! :)
I have played modern for along time and this deck I still bring once or twice a month
would you say swiftspear can easily replace goblin guide? I mean your going to cast a lot of burn spells so wouldn't swiftspear deal more damage?
Is Browbeat a good option for this deck? and How many fetch lands do you recommend playing?
