This video has completely changed my prejudice view of James Bay as a musician and artist. I'm not a massive fan of his vocals (which is more a personal preference as they are by no means poor) and it is so easy to dismiss mainstream artists as being "average" without really giving the music a good listen to. I am often put off by songs which are over played on the radio as they very quickly become annoying. Anyway I digress...Very talented player and songwriter and seems like a really nice guy. Has made me take a long hard look at myself, I should not be so quick to judge. Thanks James and Lee for sharing this with us!
I used to go and watch his band play before he was famous. He used to play awesome blues/soul/funk music... They were a great band, and in my opinion, his music then was so much better than the stuff he's famous for now. I wish that he'd stuck to that bluesy style, but he'd probably still be unknown if he had done.
I heavily respect the fact that although you may not like his vocals, you still respect that he isn't bad and you still respect that others may like it. Many people would say "I don't like him so he's bad" which of course isn't always the case so I give you my respect. Thank you ☺️
artists from U.K are guaranteed real talents. even if you hate one direction, listen to them singing individually. then compared them to any boy band ever existed. no crap from U.K, unlike U.S anyway, bay was actually a guitarist before deciding to be a singer
I'm gonna be one of those who always says something like "Bring back the "Chaos and the Calm" good old James!". This album is a masterpiece. And bring the HAT BACK!!!
James is one of the very few artists I can't wait to see grow further. I consider myself very lucky to be close to his age so I can be here for his entire journey.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would love any tips you can give me.
I love that Cap is doing this, it gives us all a closer look to a lot of our idols, and personally inspires me now that these people are so simple with their gear, and so complex with their talent. Please never stop this Captain Lee.
The Captain meets interviews are really some of the best guitar interviews out here. No bullshit, just sheer passion for gorgeous guitar sounds. And you really feel that lee looks up to them. I want my fav guitarists interviewed by lee!
What a player and what a lovely bloke. I met him when he first came to Andertons to try the Tone King (before his album was even released) and he's such a nice, humble guy. He deserves all the success he's getting,
I have just passed the last 46 minutes watching a video about guitars while I had no clue what they were talking about xD Too easy to fall for him being so passionate about it!
Another brilliant interview, these should be shown on Sky Arts or BBC4, Lee is such a natural interviewer. I'd love to see Ronnie Wood, Marc Ford & Derek Trucks in future ones
Pleaaaaaaasseeeee do this with John Mayer.... Andertons + John Mayer = Perfection!!! These interviews are amazing... Learn so much about guitarists from these than from things like tv documentaries... More please!! I'm sure John will do it if you ask really nicely......
James said once in an interview to Total Guitar magazine, that when he sat down to write his debut album, he had to set aside the blues and soul inspirations. Having wanting to be played on the radio and get known, he had to let his style go more mainstream. I hope he gets inspired to write a blues influenced album at some point of his career. He has a spark of blues greatness he has to explore and bring about. These days, when pop music rules the mainstream, he is one of the young musicians, which can carry the blues legacy to the next generation.
OMG! I am so glad I found this!!!! AWESOME INTERVIEW! I think this is an awesome interview and really shows the amazing talents of James, his kindness, realness and how humble he is about his numerous talents. My husband plays guitar and really listens to James because I just love him, his talent and heart felt lyrics that so many can relate to. He's got the balance down and has figured out the formula for success without having to compromise himself. His honesty, maturity for his age and artistic ability blows me away.. not just his musicality but his drawing and so much more...He gets it. He really gets the gift he has and I think he has only barely tapped into what he has in that beautiful heart of his. As a Mom of two teenage sons and a wife of an amazing husband... I love that this young man has such a great heart and a great gift to share with the world. I hope that my sons will have the clear focus, determination, kind heart and work ethic at his age. If so, we will have done our jobs and done them very well. His parents and family must be proud as they should be. You can't fake his persona and humbleness. At some point, the truth comes out and he really is the REAL DEAL. Hoping he comes to Los Angeles again soon. I will be front and center.. with my husband because that's how we roll.... I think my husband will be drooling more over his guitar abilities and equipment LOL!!! Thanks for sharing this
Unexpected, refreshing and insightful. Someone already said it, but he has my respect based on this. I'll even listen to the album now with fresh ears. Really good.
What a wonderful nice genuine down to earth guy James Bay is. He seems to b his own man and not someone who feels he has to follow the fashion in equipment. Thanks Lee for this insight.
Never really paid much attention to James Bay's music before, however, watched this video has given me an appreciation of the guy. Seems very genuine, down to earth, and knows his history of blues. I also went out and bought his album today. (I was listening to Machinehead and BFMV yesterday... James Bay today.... It's great)
Captain just like he really doesn't know how good he is. It's true, his guitar ability is underrated, especially in songs like hold back the river. Great interview capt.
What a great interview... hanging out with cool musicians, talking guitars and playing vibey music. James Bay is a true talent and an absolute gentleman. Great job Lee.
I've been watching the Anderton's videos for a long time, is it just me or in the last couple of years has the Captain turned into a pretty damn good player ?Way to go bro, you are an inspiration to those of us who are casual players that if you practice enough and hang out with great players like Rob Chapman it will rub off on you.
Epiphone are underrated!!! Thay have that sound, the new as the vintage and pre gibson epis (bigest concurrent back at the day to gibson!!!) and the elitist (new high end epi line since the 90s) (high end 2000€$+)....all epis are superb!!
I really enjoyed the beginning and end jams a lot. Subtle blues lead guitar duets are so cool. I have never heard of this young man, but he seems very pleasant and talented. Yes more Captain. Much more.
I'll admit, I never heard of James Bay. Of course, I haven't listened to anything recorded past 1975... But what a great young man. He looks very much like David Gilmour in his younger days. Funny, it's the few times a '58 reissue, hand selected, Les Paul took a back seat to an Epiphone.
When James does play humbuckers as a lead he's incredible. He says his next album will concentrate more on ability to play lead. Right now 80% of his set is without a pick. He's been touring just about every day since the release of Chaos on 3/25/15. He might be gigging as much or more than Bonamassa. He also had 3 Grammy nominations, dude is for real.
This was a JOY to watch. So informative but casual and laid back. I didn't want it to end. My admiration for James has just grown. Fantastic interview :)
I will admit that I don't like pop music AT ALL. But this guy, who I have probably heard on the radio in Australia more times than I can remember (and I work at one) has jumped out at me as one of those few who although has made it mainstream, actually has mastered his instrument and shows genuine love for his craft and to his instrument. The way he plays makes me want to buy an Epiphone or similiar hollow body guitar and write songs... Thanks for sharing this guys... it inspires young startup musos like myself to push on. :)
Really am not a fan of modern pop music but have always been a fan of James since I first came about! Think he's such an incredible player and guitarist! Also love how he mentioned the war on drugs, they are one of my favourite bands!!
what a genuine soul. He needs to demonstrate his ability on guitar more so that he gets the respect that he deserves. It's almost hard to watch James bc of how damn talented he is. Mad respect
I watched this entire interview with the silliest grin on my face and i just couldn't stop! Im just blown away by James genuine love for music and guitars. A true inspiration!
literaly best interview ever!!! it is so cool to see james in his element talking about what he loves doing with someone who loves the same thing and who understands him !!
Nice to see a British 'pop' star who has an understanding of guitar history and players. Though my view of him has changed, he seems less a pop star and more a guitarist who wrote a pop album. Be interesting to see what he comes up with next.
You and this kid should do a blues record together. Absolutely beautiful jam you guys did. Unfamiliar with his music but what a fantastic player. I'll have to check out more of his work now.
Agreed ,Lee what a great guy down to earth and a top notch interview one of Lee's best and to be able to play along with James what a experience thanks guys
This is great, I was a bit on the fence about James Bay but he seems like such a genuine, excitable lover of all things music related that it's very difficult not to like him. Will definitely check out more of his material than the singles that I've heard.
I had a good time listening to you two playing and talking. I think that say's a lot about how good this was. I even played along and dialed in the tones i was hearing from James into my amp. it's nice to learn new tones. I like what I heard.
Lee Anderson is getting better and better at the interviews, they seem more like a chat down the pub rather than the un-natural 'I have a list of 20 questions' style that everybody else does. The mic'ing is fantastic too! Another great video, well done!
The Captain is one of the top 5 interviewers, certainly in the guitar rhealm. He just loves music and loves to hear about where it comes from and what inspires it. James Bay is probably one of the nicest and coolest guys ever and his story is quite interesting as well as his guitar of choice, the Epiphone Century. Long may you both run boys!

Yup. Same here

I wish that he'd stuck to that bluesy style, but he'd probably still be unknown if he had done.
i dont think he would be if he tried it now
I heavily respect the fact that although you may not like his vocals, you still respect that he isn't bad and you still respect that others may like it. Many people would say "I don't like him so he's bad" which of course isn't always the case so I give you my respect. Thank you ☺️

What a nice man James is. Articulate, unpretentious and and great, great tone.
I'm gonna be one of those who always says something like "Bring back the "Chaos and the Calm" good old James!". This album is a masterpiece. And bring the HAT BACK!!!
James Bay is just brilliant!
James is one of the very few artists I can't wait to see grow further. I consider myself very lucky to be close to his age so I can be here for his entire journey.
James' blues playing is on point! He should do a little like 4 track blues album, that would be insane! He's a brilliant musician, so versatile!
"Music with soul not necessarily soul music"-dope quote
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost my password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Milo Hugo instablaster =)
Great interview. Got a lot of respect for this guy.
+Ry Naylor Guitar Ditto!
Ry Naylor Guitar yes Ry love your james bay lessons
Lee certainly got fired up, I can't remember him playing that well in a long time. James Bay is a breath of fresh air.
That was an enjoyable way to spend 45 minutes, in the company of two decent, down to earth blokes talking about music. Cheers Cap'n Lee and Mr Bay
That old Epiphone has the most beautiful sound, it's immense. The Captain's in love as well haha.
Captain you are a really great interviewer. A natural... I'm really enjoying this series. Great stuff. Greetings from Canada.
I just missed this until now somehow. What a great Meets video and what a gentleman James is ...
I love that Cap is doing this, it gives us all a closer look to a lot of our idols, and personally inspires me now that these people are so simple with their gear, and so complex with their talent. Please never stop this Captain Lee.

What a great interview ...james bay what a nice guy
top work ATV
What an awesome player! Such genuine love for tone, feel and gear. Awesome to see someone doing that in the mainstream
I have just passed the last 46 minutes watching a video about guitars while I had no clue what they were talking about xD Too easy to fall for him being so passionate about it!
Me too a year later!!
I've asked John Mayer a couple questions last week. You can check out his responds on mystupidmouth.com
How about a Captain meets John Mayer? If that is somehow possible (Maybe arrange it via Paul Reed Smith?)
captain would jizz his pants
+xWILZTAx that is certainly true haha, maybe he should bring a second pair of pants if the meeting really happens
+Raphael Vierlinger I would kill for this
+Raphael Vierlinger Forget the Capt jizzing his pants, I would jizz MY pants!
This would be so sick

This guy is right out my street!!! Hope James will have as more success as he deserve.

The way The Captain's face lights up when James says he used a blues junior for his favorite video is absolutely priceless.
Unexpected, refreshing and insightful. Someone already said it, but he has my respect based on this. I'll even listen to the album now with fresh ears. Really good.
This should just be a TV show. The Andertons videos these days are so damn awesome! Lee is a great interviewer!
+Yesidoplaytheguitar Yup - surely this is prime late night BBC4 material...
That would be a lot of fun!
what a really genuine nice guy. total guitar geek in the best meaning. respect to you sir.
what a great guitar player the captain is it has been so great to see him on his guitar playing journey getting better and better.
What a wonderful nice genuine down to earth guy James Bay is. He seems to b his own man and not someone who feels he has to follow the fashion in equipment. Thanks Lee for this insight.
He's certainly got his feet firmly on the ground & he has a real passion for his music.
Never really paid much attention to James Bay's music before, however, watched this video has given me an appreciation of the guy. Seems very genuine, down to earth, and knows his history of blues. what a great interview , i also liked the interview and demo James did on That peddle show.
Captain just like he really doesn't know how good he is. It's true, his guitar ability is underrated, especially in songs like hold back the river. Great interview capt.
Im loving The Captain meets series so much, they are so interesting to watch and the fantastic playing is a bonus
It's so sad that he doesn't show off his blues talent more :(
Didn't know much about James Bay before this, but now he has my full respect. A true musician and artist
What a great interview... hanging out with cool musicians, talking guitars and playing vibey music. James Bay is a true talent and an absolute gentleman. Great job Lee.
awesome! James is both a great guitarist and a singer, and he's a very nice guy in person
love the hippy hand shake/half hearted high five at the end there. legends the both of you
I've been watching the Anderton's videos for a long time, is it just me or in the last couple of years has the Captain turned into a pretty damn good player ?Way to go bro, you are an inspiration to those of us who are casual players that if you practice enough and hang out with great players like Rob Chapman it will rub off on you.

I've been trying to work out who it is he reminds me of for about 2 years 👍🏻
+northof50now I think a reissue should take a back seat to an original 60s axe every time haha

my favourite of the 3 Top Gear presenters
+stupidusername38 this should be on top
This video was my introduction to James Bay. Right after viewing, my daughter invited me to performance in San Diego on Sunday. Serendipity!
The captain played very well in this episode. Bravo
This was a JOY to watch. So informative but casual and laid back. I didn't want it to end. My admiration for James has just grown. Fantastic interview :)

Nice one Captain! Verrrrry cool interview! Definitely your best yet! :-D
Some of the best stuff on the Tube now. Thanks Captain, great real feel format!
James Bay is definately my favourite guitarist at the moment, he knows how to get a good tone too
Probably the best interview I've seen on UA-cam.
I watched this entire interview with the silliest grin on my face and i just couldn't stop! Im just blown away by James genuine love for music and guitars. A true inspiration!
Saw James live in Italy a couple of months ago and what a performer he is already, absolutely electrifying!
literaly best interview ever!!! it is so cool to see james in his element talking about what he loves doing with someone who loves the same thing and who understands him !!
Superb interview
Lee, thanks for keeping it going! Very inspirational!
Most chilling 45 minutes in a long while with Mr Bay and the Captain!
Nice to see a British 'pop' star who has an understanding of guitar history and players. Though my view of him has changed, he seems less a pop star and more a guitarist who wrote a pop album. Be interesting to see what he comes up with next.
Wow, talk about someone who is passionate about what interests them. James' knowledge and talent is splendid.
What a pleasant surprise to find this today
His use of wide intervals is the biggest part of his sound...I would say. Love it.
check john frusiante two note theory
You and this kid should do a blues record together. Absolutely beautiful jam you guys did. Unfamiliar with his music but what a fantastic player. I'll have to check out more of his work now.
It's good to see lee jamming with a proper musician , shows just how good he is . Sweet playing guys
This was an absolutely brilliant video Lee! The respect you give and take is immense :-)
Agreed ,Lee what a great guy down to earth and a top notch interview one of Lee's best and to be able to play along with James what a experience thanks guys
G'day Cap, thank you for the great interview. James is such a lovely lad.
Pure magic what James plays @38:00
This is great, I was a bit on the fence about James Bay but he seems like such a genuine, excitable lover of all things music related that it's very difficult not to like him. Will definitely check out more of his material than the singles that I've heard.
Very well done Captain. Always a pleasure catching these laid back interviews.
James Bay=Top Bloke, and knows how to make his guitar sound cool....love the tones and ideas he comes up with.Roll on the next album
This was awsome. and suprisingly it ended to fast imho. I could have continued listening to these two guys just going on about music.
always thought of him as a singer who could play a bit before this. Much better guitarist than I thought he was, love his playing, and his gear!
Didn't realize James played blues so spot on, love it! Great interview, great sounds..
That was great! More of these please.
Love this series Capt Lee the playing is great and the interviews as well plus hearing about other bands and guitarists thank you
I don't know who James Bay is. But he seems really cool and he knows a lot about music. He seems super chill. I have to check out his music
Good god, you are in for such a TREAT!! Heard any more music of his?
James Bay seems like a fantastic human, good to know considering his massive success.
I had a good time listening to you two playing and talking. I think that say's a lot about how good this was. I even played along and dialed in the tones i was hearing from James into my amp. it's nice to learn new tones. I like what I heard.
he's far better than i gave him credit for. time for a listen, i suppose
That Epiphone Century is so simple, but it's such a distinct sound that he's totally embraced. Single P90, gotta love it!
One of the most down to earth and amazing interviews I’ve seen. Was a fan already, but now I want to buy James Bay a beer and talk music...
Lee Anderson is getting better and better at the interviews, they seem more like a chat down the pub rather than the un-natural 'I have a list of 20 questions' style that everybody else does. The mic'ing is fantastic too!
Another great video, well done!
That opening jam was the best one yet on Andertons.
Probably the best interview video you've done... And I never had an appreciation of James bay before this.
I love love the way James Bay plays his guitar
The Captain is one of the top 5 interviewers, certainly in the guitar rhealm. He just loves music and loves to hear about where it comes from and what inspires it. James Bay is probably one of the nicest and coolest guys ever and his story is quite interesting as well as his guitar of choice, the Epiphone Century. Long may you both run boys!
I really get excited when you talked about the firt guitar. I am waiting for her, one day. Perfect perfect interview, so natural, amazing 40 minutes.
Such a big inspiration to me! James Bay!!!
Incredibly inspiring, comforting interview. You all rock!
Never knew James Bay was such an awesome guy, really love this interview, very inspirational!
Lovely tones and musicality. And people.
What a thoroughly nice guy James Bay is! You both are! I'll defo be going to a gig! Love the Epiphone!
The jam at the beginning was ace! Loving this series
Best interview of James Bay I've seen. The Cap done well! 😎
Vid is dope. Both Captain and James Bay have great taste in gear!
