- It's a little spooky how even in the final film, some of Donkey's dialogue was intended for a different Shrek.

Fun Fact: Mike almost went with a Canadian accent for Shrek instead of the Scottish one. They recorded the entire film with Shrek having a Canadian accent but last minute he wanted to try a Scottish accent and he re-recorded it willingly without compensation and gave us the Shrek we know and love today.
Mike with his regular voice sounds like if Ray Liotta was cast as shrek
ua-cam.com/users/shorts8DcJ-SSBims
Mike Myers seemed to have started the trend on giving other fairy tale characters Scottish and Cockney accents. Harold and Lillian, Goldi and the Bears.
Fun Fact Chris Farley completed about 90% of his Shrek lines.

In a way, from these little clips Chris’ Shrek feels younger. At least from the dialogue he feels less abrasive and irritated, even if slightly. Chris’ shrek feels like a young adult shrek whose been on his own for a couple years but he’s still figuring his place in the world. He’s a little more open with the dialogue happening a little quicker. Mike in the other hand to me feels like a shrek who was forgotten about. Like donkey showed up way later. Shrek is a man now. He’s been living with this for a very long time, and it’s so deeply jaded and embittered him. The way he sounds, his aggression and slightly more volatile temper (helped with some of the extended dialogue scenes we know from the actual film) feels like he’s someone whose given up on trying to find his place. Idk if this makes sense but this is the vibe I get.
I’m sure had Chris not tragically passed away they woulda redone some of the dialogue maybe added a bit more aggression but both VA communicate different types of shrek to me. They add their own perspective and experiences to define who this shrek is and how he sees himself, the world and his relationship with the world.
It helps that Chris Farley was in his 30s.
Great observation
I get it.
It's not a science mate

@@benjir5264Mike did a fantastic job but his was the polished version and could have multiple takes to get right. Chris’s were probably pretty rough draft overall

I would never have realized how talented Mike Myers is as a voice actor without Shrek. He’s really got an amazing voice and the inflections he uses are really next level.
ua-cam.com/users/shorts8DcJ-SSBims
The difference between the 'they judge me before they even know me' lines is really interesting to me. Myers' Shrek sounds disappointed and resigned, but Farley sounds annoyed and even slightly baffled. Like it hadn't really sunk in for him yet that everyone has those preconceived notions of ogres and he thought it was still possible for him to fit in, while Myers has given up trying. I love the Shrek we got, but it's fascinating to see what could've been.
Eddie Murphy was there in the Chris Era, which is cool.
Chris did good, but I can't help but to feel like Myers was the better fit. We can't really know for sure, since we're comparing the final lines to napkin sketches, but Myers just puts a little more worn down emotion into it. As others have said, the Farley Shrek feels younger, and the Myers Shrek feels like someone alone and forgotten by the world.
ua-cam.com/users/shorts8DcJ-SSBims
I feel like Farley's Campfire scene was good until when he suddenly broke out and said "Aaaah! A stupid, stinky..." etc when it became clear in his voice that it was a kids film. It sounded like he was trying to entertain whereas Myers sounds like he's genuinely upset
You can feel the loneliness in Chris’s voice and delivery but I think mike was the right one for the whole thing
He was lonely alright... Lonely because his wife died or left him and he never had sex again!
You make me sick
ua-cam.com/users/shorts8DcJ-SSBims
I can't imagine Shrek without Mike Myers, but hearing Farley's delivery always makes me think about what might have been. The role seemed really well suited to him. I've heard stories in interviews about how he was frustrated with being typecast as the "funny fat man fall down" guy, and you can hear some of that come out in the campfire scene. He was way more talented at acting than he let on.
I don't think Chris was acting; He was genuine.
"Yeah... I know..."
yeah he was a real ogre
Lol are you people really forgetting that he was a drug addict at the end of his life and was high 24/7. This was just before he died of drug overdose, you can clearly hear it in his voice. that he's not well

I may be biased because I am a Mike fan, but I prefer his performance over Chris' any day. It adds so much character and uniqueness, and I doubt Shrek would be as iconic as he is without his Scottish accent, which Mike suggested. I don't understand when people say they would have preferred Chris, no disrespect, just don't see it

I think more than anything else it's because people still miss Chris Farley, I do prefer Myers performance, but to get it under the circumstances we did was tragic.
It's because people are used to mike meyers and got a taste of what might have been. In an alternate universe where chris farley played shrek, nobody would care because it would be what everybody was used to.

I agree, Chris's version resonates a lot more with the inocence of a child discovering the world is actually mean. Mike's version has a tone of someone who undestood this long ago, but is no less affected to it. It resonates with children by showing them even adults suffer bullying, but it also resonates with adults who tried to shove the pain deep inside.

Both versions of Shrek are amazing in their own ways ✨
To be honest, I prefer Mike Myers for the voice of Shrek.
I might be going a little deep here but I think the two styles show us how Chris’s feelings toward rejection look and how Mike’s look. Chris still held on to a lot of hope that things would be better. Mike is hardened and confident about his stance. From what I’ve seen of the two men I think some of this was true in their real lives. Mike is probably a tough nut and not easily pushed around. Hearing this I miss Chris. Kind and gentle soul.

I feel like Farley's Shrek would've had more heart/human moments. Not that Myers' didn’t, but I think Farley would’ve bought more of a gentle tenderness with his interpretation. Myers' Shrek had his sweet moments DGMW, but I feel like the crass, blow-hard, self-deprecating moments were more his strengths IMO
Farelys showed a more compassionate and human side as ogre/monster more than the humans did; while Meyers showed more reclusive and misunderstood ogre that wanted to be left alone and treated like a normal person

The Scottish accent was the correct choice! Still I don't know Chris Farley could voice act so good too!
There's a universe out there that Chris Farley didn't die and he had his version of the movie. Would like to see that.
There are more emotions you can hear in Farley's voice, that you can feel. Myers just sounds like he's reading.
You could tell Chris was really speaking from the heart, RIP.
Heya!! I'm a voice-actor, so maybe I can bring a different perspective! I love Chris Farley, but Mike is much more natural in his dialog. The way Mike says "doesn't that bother you?" and "no, this is one of those drop it and leave it alone things", sounds more normal like how a regular person would say them. Chris was going for a much more larger-than-life personality with a skip in his beat, even in his quiet moments. I'm not sure it would have worked so well since Shrek often has these intimate moments. Compare both of their "they judge me before they even know me" -- Mike's is very clear and evenly paced. Chris still has his big energy and rushes through with "theyjudgemebeforetheyeven KNOW me". He's slurring a bit and it's a bit hard to make out what he says.
Chris was so well-known for being a big goofball with big energy, I get the feeling he was struggling to rein it in. He was beloved, but I think Mike was honestly the better pick. Even Eddie Murphy struggled at first. Notice how he pitches up at first with his "Ohhh, this is another one of those onion things", before pitching down at the end in the final movie, which sounds more natural. I think they both needed help and were struggling to get that, even though this is a cartoon, this was a bit more grown-up than the stuff they've seen before. But to his credit, there was some great ones Chris did like his "Alright, alright!!" and his "people see me and they go~". I think, with more time and direction, Chris could have calmer and subtle performance that Shrek called for. That all being said, Mike knocked it out of the park and helped make the character iconic. Great video!

The first one is basically me in the shower.
I love that that mike did a Scottish voice over Chris normal voice
As much as I am curious to wonder what Chris Farley would’ve done with the character, Mike Meyers was the right fit for Shrek

Whats even more fucked up is that they erased his existence until we found out 💔
I love both actors. Gotta appreciate the way they both took on the character. Chris Farley definitely had great potential and might’ve went on to do bigger things. Shame he died so young. I bet he put a lot of his own personality and how he was treated into the performance.
Mike Myers us just the one we’re used to for the last 20 years. His idea of giving Shrek a Scottish accent was just the icing on the cake to make Shrek got in we’ll in the 16th century fairy tale world. I think Mike Myers started the trend of other characters having Scottish or Cockney accents. I believe Goldi and the Bears have Cockney accents. I think it’s the same with Harold and Lillian since of course John Cleese and Julie Andrews are from the U.K.
Mike sounds a lot more genuine in his delivery. I would have loved Chris Farley as Shrek for other reasons, but he does sound like Chris is "trying" to deliver the lines; rather than just delivering them naturally.
You're hearing the finished product of many takes in Mike's delivery. Chris' delivery was never polished to the same extent.

I feel Mike Myers throws just a touch more sadness into the role imo. The "I'm just a big, dumb, ogre" bit shows justle little more humanity than Farley's take. But both are great reads.

Damn I never realized how important shrek and the message behind it really was
I just watched the Chris Farley documentary and this makes me wish we got some form of his version of the movie
Ultimately the Scottish accent was a stroke of genius; it was simultaneously incongruous and undeniably ‘out of left field’, and yet fit into Shrek’s fairytale world so, so well . . .
“They judge me before they even know me.”
No offense to Farley, but that line was delivered WAY better by Myers. Farley just says it like an observation, but Myers says it like a statement of fact. A very cold, sad, but true fact.
I have to disagree Chris’s delivery seems to Come from a very real place, like he was talking about himself
Listen to it again, Farley was saying it from the heart
@@jonmartin9732 Maybe, but even so, I think the other version fits the character better. Shrek is supposed to be someone who already knows who he is and how he’s perceived by others.
