      nothing beats russian army at this: they do not wear socks at all -- they wear RAGS. literally they wrap rags around soldiers feet. socks are effing banned in russian army. the principle is: a good soldier MUST SUFFER.
      they also issue atrocious high boots without bootstraps (straight pull-on) that always slip off, are not water proof at all, had stiff like iron soles and equally slippery, and heavy on top of it. russian bots are made of FAKE leather that is thin, porous, and has zero thermal resistance.

    • @p_serdiuk
      @p_serdiuk 5 років тому +58

      @@sillysad3198 Where the hell did you hear that?
      First, _portyanki_ are not rags, they are strips of cloth that soldiers wrap around their feet. They are very effective at preventing blisters when they are wrapped properly, hence the ban on socks. And they are regularly washed and changed just as socks would be; they are not discardable.
      Second, the USSR army and its descendents used ordinary, laced, leather combat boots, the same as could be found in US and Europe. It's known that prison labor is extensively involved in making these, so there are quality issues, but the boots are functional enough. Leather needs to be treated with shoe wax to resist water, and a good pair of wool socks plus wool boot soles solve the problem of cold.
      Third, Russia does use modern composite material combat boots as well.

    Some additions from personal experience of a 530km long hike:
    Use a pair of socks that are made out of that material womens stockings are made out of under your woolen hiking socks. Works like a charm and keeps your woolen socks alive longer because there is less friction. Also they tend to stay dry better than wool.
    If you are prone to blisters you can use a wax-stick (you can buy them) to increase friction where you need it on your undersocks and you're perfect afterwards.
    Most importantly tough: Keep your feet as dry as possible. I use 3 pairs of woolen socks (undersocks stay all day long). Pair 1 for the morning until my lunch break. Then i change to pair 2 while pair 1 dries on my backpack when i walk on afterwards. When night falls and you put up your hammock/tarp you change to pair 3 for the night. Those (again) are dry and also don't smell as bad which means your sleeping bag wont. Which is nice. Comfort is important outside and reasonably clean as well.

    I, a US Army veteran, was taught by more senior soldiers to wear woman's knee high stockings under the issue wool socks. I used them in ranger school (plenty of walking there) and they did a great job of protecting my feet. The stockings are kind of slippery so they perform the same purpose as the thin inner sock you mentioned.
    Hard to believe a non-military person would go on a long unnecessary foot march just to validate a blister avoidance technique.

      @@Pax.Britannica Just wanted to add my experience. Went on a backpacking trip in boy scouts for a week. Bought a winter boot to train for 6 months before the summer backpacking trip. 16 y/o self didn’t consider I’d have to wear the same heavy winter boots for a summer trip. Scoutmaster took us to hunting store and gave us this same two sock tip. Four the first I’ve bought a thin polyester sock. Similar to a dress sock. Second sock was thick wool. So summer hike with two pairs of socks including one thick wool. You would think this would be a recipe for disaster. My feet still sweat however ut doesn’t matter. Friction never occurs between your feet and the shoe. Always between the layers of the sock. Since that trip, apply it in everyday life. I’ll use any kind of thin polyester sock and then cotton sock over that. There really isn’t too much to over think. Just need that first layer sock to not absorb water.

      @@KB4QAA any recommendations for the inner sock's material?

  • @michaelblacktree
    @michaelblacktree 5 років тому +2

    Yes, the US Army does this. We were taught to wear a pair of dress socks (very thin) underneath our BDU socks (thick wool) during road marches. And it works. Also note that the BDU socks are thick along the bottom and sides of the foot, for extra padding. But the rest of the sock is thin enough to breathe well.
    That said, if your foot gets completely submerged (wading through a creek or whatever), you lose some of the benefit from having 2 layers of socks. I think the water makes the layers cling to each other. The fix for that is to carry spare socks, in a zip-lock bag.

When not walking, get your feet out of your boots but don't remove your socks unless you plan to replace them with a clean pair, putting used sock back on can make them sit differently on your feet and lead to blisters, despite the double sock

    When I first started hiking after moving to Seattle in 1973, this was the method recommended by the guidebooks to hiking and implicitly recommended by what the outdoor supply shops such as REI stocked. However, more recently in Front Royal, Virginia next to the Blue Ridge Mountains, the shops for hiking etc. know nothing of it, nor do they stock appropriately. Moreover, I asked my godson in the U.S. Marines about and he never heard about the method. It seems the Marines and the Army have different opinions and perhap different research and results.
    Anyway, back many years ago in Seattle the recommendation was that the inner, thin socks be silk or a silk-like synthetic. I am inspired by Lindybeige to experiment again with the two-sock system, and with both wool and silk (if I can find the shorter silk socks anymore).

    Speaking as a soldier in the US, one of the ways we managed to toughen up our feet (particularly in preparation for things like ranger school) is to use our boots without socks. In the short term, doing this once a week with a heavy load on your back will be uncomfortable and almost guarantee blisters, but over the course of months can help condition the soles of your feet to endure through aggressive terrain without much issue.

    I've been hiking in two pairs of socks for the past 5-6 years and have never suffered from blisters since. Hiking in trail running shoes rather than mountaineering boots has also helped, however.
    I heard about the two sock method and intuited that having a thin inner sock would be advantageous, so I have been doing that from the start. Personally I go with a coolmax inner (thinnest sock I can find) and a thicker synthetic on the outside, though wool might be a better option for cold temperatures. Another option I thought might work but never got around to trying would be a pair of 5-toe socks as an inner. These would probably help reduce chafing between toes.
