Damn right we crushed that 1k subscribers. Had Eoin not told us about your talents, we would have been missing out. Also, I honestly did not know that forge welding was a thing. I was today years old when I found out about that.
Hey, just found your channel this morning from your woodworking buddy's channel, I can't remember his name and I'm not gonna risk a guess and butcher the spelling, but I've wanted to be a blacksmith since I read some of my first fantasy novels as a kid, little did I know back then that one day I'd be able to learn from awesome Irish blacksmith on the internet. The fork looks amazing! I'd be honored if I won it. Sidenote, I think 'shave and a haircut' is the most international tune. Anyway, keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your craft with the world.😸
That’s how it’s done. You make my powerhammers, press, and the many tools blush with embarrassment. Basic. Historic. Proper. Greetings from a Texas ranch.
I have always loved and had an appreciation for both smiths and welders, you are able to translate what you are doing with both simplicity and a craftsmen's intuition that it only continues to stoke my interest in the subject, thank you kindly James.
I've been watching blacksmithing for some time now. Eion this morning he said go take a look. Here i am now subscribed. Enjoying your work and videos. Keep up the excellent work...
Eoin Reardon suggested checking your content out and I’m glad I did, I’ve been smithing for a few years now and am learning tips and tricks that I hadn’t thought of , thank you sir for all the ideas.👍
I found your channel thanks to Eoin and your kindness to make him some nails. I enjoyed this video very much and look forward to watching more. You both can be with me while I wash and dry dishes.
Found you thanks to Eoin, came for a longstanding admiration for blacksmithing, and will keep coming back for your excellent description of how you work! No hard feelings if shipping to USA isn't in the works, I'll still give a comment to feed Al G. Rythm.
I have never forged welded a thing honestly. But being a welder my son and I make things alot and we just found you and are going to watch until he falls asleep
Your narration is excellent. It greatly increases the enjoyment of watching you work. With so many newbies, it would be nice if you did a tour and basics of smithing for us. How much does your anvil weigh?
As a welder apprentice hot welds can be overwhelming but you holding tools that close to that much heat is amazing. You throwing sparks of your work is totally beyond cool. Keep letting the hammer do the talking and I’ll keep watching and liking.
great, now I want to be a blacksmith. awesome work btw, I know jack about forging things but it looks amazing! glad to see the channel getting so many subs!
You had a piece of scrap iron and said you were going to make a fork out of it. I told you I would be back at lunch time so I could eat with it. I came back and asked you about it a few hours later and it looked like this🖕.
Hey James, saw you in bunratty a few weeks back, was amazing to see your work and delighted to see you starting up a youtube channel! Looking forward to see what else you make
I'm assuming you need that metal to the temp where you have sparks coming off the metal for the hot weld but is that also not a sign of over heating the metal?
It can be! If you use too much air, you can burn or oxidise your material before you get to a welding heat. It takes a lot of practice to understand the balance. The sparks are from the scale.
Cool, one of my best friends is blacksmith. He rarely is able to show the process but only the end results. Nice to see what he probably does in his days
James, I'm curious as to what your favorite grades of steel are? (Mine are 1090, 5160, and 15N20, beause I like making Damascus blades. And sometimes 440C.)
My favourite material to work is wrought iron for sure. I generally don't use tool steels unless I'm making chisels, punches or hammers for myself. In that case it's en9 for ease of use and good quality. I don't make blades at all - yet. I will eventually!
@@oconnorblacksmith Ah - I see; EN9 is what in the USA is referred to as 1050 - a good, hardenable medium steel. I agree, a good choice. I don't see much actual wrought iron around these days. Mostly what is called "wrought iron" is just mild steel painted black. Fine for decorative work, but not for anything that needs to stand up to a pounding. One of my newest favorites is O-1 steel. (Letter "O", not zero.) It's easy to work, quenches nicely, and takes a good edge. And the best part is that it's free - I get it from steel mills and metal suppliers by scavenging worn-out band saw blades from their rubbish bins! Google says that in Europe it's called DIN 2510. I'm really envious of your power hammer. That would take a gret deal of time and effort out of repeatedly folding and welding billets of steel. I want to build one, but there are so many projects and only so much time... 😄
I came from Eoin Reardon, absolutely loving your work!
Same here
That makes 3 of us 😂

Great video James. The voice over is brilliant 👍✊️
That's a grand fork. Lovely voice and I like how you explain what you're doing as you to, subscribed 👌
Enjoyed the forging and explanation! Maybe in another life I'll get around to developing the blacksmith talent.
James, the videos are much improved with your narration. Splendid job!
Thank you for the feedback! It was well outside my comfort zone, and hopefully it becomes more natural in time 😅
Very nice! Loving your power hammer. That will help save your arm. Excellent work.

My big one is roughly 150kg or so. My Blacker one is 250kg
This is a lovely peace of art!
Thanks eoin for leading me to this legendary channel
Class job lad. 🤘😎 I think blacksmithing is fascinating, but don't know could I stick the heat of it. 😅🤣
The summer is hardy and the winter is lovely. I start very early in the summer months to avoid too much heat. Up and over 56°c in the summer!
@@oconnorblacksmith holy shit, really? I'll stay going with wood and craft work. 😅🤣
Very nice! That's a lovely piece!

Hello from Texas, almost as nice as the fork you made at the castle when we were there last week😂
What fork?? 😂😂
You had a piece of scrap iron and said you were going to make a fork out of it. I told you I would be back at lunch time so I could eat with it. I came back and asked you about it a few hours later and it looked like this🖕.

Just good ol regular h2o 🙂

Job well done and I would love to get that piece. I have one questions and that’s why didn’t you quenching it?
No need, it's just mild steel. 🙂
Cool, one of my best friends is blacksmith. He rarely is able to show the process but only the end results.
Nice to see what he probably does in his days
What temperature does the heat source need to be to be able to forge weld?
I work off the colour of the steel - Bright white is the welding colour. I believe its 1350°c
