      School aged actors (I'm a MS TD) have to have more respect for what they work with. They're using the only one and there's usually not a replacement sitting in the wings just in case. Professional shows have people on staff whose job it is to make sure everything works every time.

    • @CaptainDominic

      What looks better throwing a box upstage to show passion or handing it to a chorus member to gently place upstage.
      Sometime you just have to accept that so. Etching will get broken and plan accordingly, be it Re enforcing the fuck out of it or having multiples so one can be repaired while the other is used.

      as someone who was on stage and behind stage for all of high school and collage you only will be doing the plays 4 maybe 6 times. Wear and tear on items do happen and since they are doing a show a night for months on end the prop is going to wear out faster no matter how good something is made.

  • @slowgold20
    @slowgold20 4 роки тому +31

    This theater BTS stuff is very cool! I'd love to see more. I'm a rigger and theater technician, and at risk of spoiling the magic, I think there is a lot of very cool technology that a lot of people don't know about that goes into modern theatrical, especially broadway, production. Automation is a relatively new game (it's really been around since the 80s, but the industry is experiencing a lot of growth atm), and it kinda seems right up Tested or Adam's alley to look at the robotics and rigging that make a big show happen. Lifting prop tables and furniture out of the way to make room off stage is only the tip of the iceberg--the Hamilton show looks pretty dang roomy backstage compared to most broadway tours I've worked on.

    I got to work as a stagehand in the props department for this show and as a set builder, and it was a fascinating experience, and seeing all this showed off on video when I just got done working around all of it is kind of surreal

    As someone who handles props at the community theater level, they're more noticeable when they're not well done - the Tonys performance of Yorktown was notable for its lack of muskets, but also the performers' clarity that the muskets were absolutely meant to be there, combining respect for the day's events with professionalism. The heavy dueling pistols are probably for that extra dose of realism where the actors can't just wave them around like toys.

    "If it can be broken, an actor will find a way to do it."
    *Thinks back to Beauty and the Beast-*
    Yep.
    (Someone broke the mirror in between the day shows for the second graders. Coincidentally that same person kept trying to wear my candles. I kept catching them. They told their mom, their mom got mad at me. But I stood my ground. I was Lumiere, and each candle was like, 5 pounds, and I was healing from a broken arm.)

    I think another great point about props that are meant to look worn is that things that age over time wear in a different way than a prop being used 8-10 times a week. A box over time will get dings on the corners and edges. A box someone is standing on 8-10 times a week will get foot prints wearing off the paint. To make something look aged with time and not aged with theatre use are two very different things.
