    We operate 60 year old vessel. Engine rotates clockwise. Propeller changes pitch. From captains order in two seconds from full forward to full reverse. This must be from beginning 1900. Before titanic.

    4:05 The spring holding the followers clear is not only to reduce wear when not in use. They also prevent the followers blocking the movement of the camshaft.

      also prevent accidental delivery of starting air into the cylinder when engine is firing and one of the cylinder air valve is leaking

    For many years aircraft have used a propeller reversing system which is much simpler than all the mechanisms shown in this video. Is this technology not viable in ship operation?

    • @johnmiesner
      @johnmiesner 3 роки тому

      There are ships that do this. Most notably there are Navy destroyers that reverse propeller pitch to reverse thrust. They need to be able to stop and maneuver more quickly than commercial ships. This mechanism is too expensive and requires too much maintenance for commercial ships

    • @svxnger
      @svxnger 3 роки тому

      @@johnmiesner Its not that uncommon, most modern ships today use Variable pitch propellers (there are a frew different types). Another solution which, again, can be found of many modern ships is a Diesel-Electric setup where the propeller is driven by an electric motor not the engine itself. Another reason why VPP's are great for cargo ships is that they require different ammount of power to navigate the seas depending on how much cargo they are carrying, you can optimize the pitch of the propeller and maximize fuel efficiency

    • @TheNeshkey
      @TheNeshkey 2 роки тому

      I believe u're referring to variable pitch propellers, which are very effective for low-weight applications, such as ur turboprops, but are mechanical nightmares for anything the size of a ship!

    How long does it take for the complete reversal process to take place? What is the lag time between full propeller forward and full propeller aft?

    • @marineinsight
      @marineinsight  3 роки тому

    Thank you for this video. It is very well done! Two stroke slow rpm diesels make so much sense as they can be directly coupled to the propeller shaft, saving the cost of a gear box. Further savings with a fixed pitch propeller. I have a question. Prior to the engine and therefore propeller reversing, is it only starter air introduced to the cylinders? (No fuel) I ask this as I was trying to make sense of this video. ua-cam.com/video/1fs2cU_MsRQ/v-deo.html They don’t provide much information but it is a container ship reversing. The engine speed (and propeller speed) stay constant until the speed of the ship is such that they can reverse. Is this the moment in time that the diesel stars fire ring? You can hear on the video, prior to the engine reversing, something is slowing down, but it’s not clear to me what.
