How would the 3rd feature from Manifest Echo work if the fighter with sentinel would have a normal melee range of 10 feet i.e. Bugbear or one of the many weapons with the reach property?

It only works for the purpose of "if the target is within 5ft of you and attacks the Echo, you get an opportunity attack". The Echo itself doesn't provide an additional zone for this bullet point.

Sentinel reaction attack RAW is not an Opportunity Attack, it's a weapon attack you make with your reaction, but it's not called an Opportunity Attack, so your Manifest Echo doesn't interact with it.

Used this lovely little sub-class in a recent one-shot, multiclassed with Barbarian to make a formidable frontliner that could quickly blink around the battlefield, 'scout' rooms ahead by sending waves of his echos ahead, and create near-inescapable pincer holds with Sentinel plus good positioning.
The echo is extremely versatile, and gives the Fighter an extremely valuable tool that lets you solve all sorts of problems-combat or otherwise-before that wizard can even reach for their guano. Plus, the ways you can flavor it vast! For my Warforged, it was a 'hard-light hologram' that was the same shade of light blue as his one 'eye''.
I highly recommended giving this archetype a whirl!

The fact that the echo is magical saves us all from the truly noodly experience of figuring out how it interacts with Animate Objects. (AFAIK it keeps whichever AC is highest, gains 40 HP as per the animated object effect, keeps all it's immunities and can do everything it could as your echo (since those features use your actions) while also being animated itself and getting it's own suite of actions.)

There's no reason to worry about the grapple mechanics if trying to drop a flying creature (and it's debatable what happens whether the grappled condition applies in the first place when you're out of reach). Just make shove attacks to drop prone, they have the same chance to succeed and no need for a free hand and the interaction is far more clean in the rules.

Echo Knight is difficult to wrap your head around, but it's pretty absurd once you understand it. Infinite attack soakers that effectively increase your range, infinite trap testers, later on it's basically infinite Find Familiar. You can teleport up 30ft ledges without issue. Even as just an object, that means so many of the spells in the game either can't target it or are complete overkill to get rid of 1hp that you can bring back as a bonus action. It not being able to use Help is one of the things balancing it XD

    • @stephenwoodfin1059

The DM has a lot of room to avoid it triggering traps at least. It's not a creature, it isn't subject to gravity, it can't interact with a lever/button/idol/rope without attacking it, etc. Like is the party gonna wait for the echo to attack each 5ft section of floor, wall, and ceiling they come across? The echo would probably make a clang noise each time too.

You can get up to 60 feet if you're willing to summon it one round and move it to the edge of your range and then on the next round move it out of your range and then teleport.
Being unable to interact with objects makes it significantly worse than Find Familiar, though. Even if you're not able to get a Flying Monkey which basically has hands. You can do way more with a familiar that can't attack objects than with an echo that can't do anything BUT attack objects.
Of course, against enemies that don't have door technology in their arsenal, being able to send wave after wave of echoes to murder them without expending any resource other than time is always nifty.

The part that bugs me about Echo Knight is that you can only make attacks from the echo's position. You can't (RAW) interact with objects from the Echo's position. But what if you make an attack against an object? Say swing your sword at a lever? Which might then push the lever to its other position. You could potentially do something like that but you couldn't explicitly pull on the lever. Echo Knight feels like it was built for a video game and not a table top rpg.

One more that i had the thought is magic missile. Magic missle ignores your AC. So, if you're wearing full plate it goes through the armour. Next scenario, you are in a metal box, immune to magic missile. You have the magical ability to slowly change MM from room to armour. At what point would MM be able to A) target you, and B) hurt you

Very clear. I see so many people talk about how great the echo is for exploration (once you can see through it and so go more than 30 ft) and totally miss the point that it is an object with only two possible interactions your attack and your opportunity attack. It cannot open a door, it is your size so it cannot slide under a door or through a keyhole and it is extremely visible and easy to 'kill'. It is not arcane eye or a rat familiar let alone an imp familiar. It's scouting use is very very limited. It's combat use to navigate the battlefield or keep you out of reach of foes while still dealing melee damage with you magic weapon is priceless when used intelligently.

Repeat the process and do not duplicate core Fighter Skills/Mechanics like Second Wind, Extra Attack, and Action Surge etc. You only pick up the Sub Class specific mechanics if you dip a level into "Action Surge" from one Sub Class and from another.
Although, if you decide to double dip levels, then you may not be able to obtain at least one Sub Class mechanics from lv3 to lv20. However, if your Character is lv20, then you may dip a level into the lv20 Sub Class even if you spent your levels on lower level Sub Class mechanics.
However, you can only take levels below your Character's Level. So, unless your Fighter is lv20. You cannot take Sub Class levels above lv10 for a lv10 Fighter.
Finally, follow the Spell Slot Calculations for multiclassing.
(It's two multiclassing variant rules that can be merged into one. (1) You level one Class up to a point at its lv1, and then another Class up to a point at its lv1 based on your current Character Level. (2) You can pick levels from Classes equal to your current level up as you go from lv1 to lv20. (3) Merge 1 and 2.)

Since it is an object, someone could also just pick it up and move it, as long as they're strong enough to do so, as an item interaction. While this is an annoyance with an artillerist artificer, it could allow an echo knight to have their echo moved by a faster/flying ally.
Then there is also the question of how movement by an object interacts with it being carried.

Putting two levels of war wizard on an echo knight fighter makes for a surprisingly good "summoner" class. Carry around a golf bag full of different weapons and use them as the "summoning focus" for the different "creatures" you can summon. Reflavor the echoes as whatever creatures you want and the different weapons you have access to as a fighter become different natural weapons. War wizard's level 2 tricks are infinitely better on a melee character than on a caster, and the handful of wizard spells helps round out utility for exploration and social.

Relevant note for ruling not went over at 2:49 - Echo may use the players bonuses, but if one rules that as a object moving around it cant be AoOd, then it also still follows the rest of the objects rules making it auto fail Str and Dex saves no matter what your bonuses to them are.
Notable because auto success and auto failure are not the same as changing the roll or roll total.
Also the list of spells includes everything that has a general target rather than specifies "creature", so it includes at least Magic Stone, Catapult, Thunderwave, Acid Arrow, Scorching Ray, Shatter, Lightning Arrow, etc (its mostly just damage spells so difference doesnt matter much as DM should per object rules judge when and how much a object that is hit or generally has anything happening to it should take damage).

I used this subclass with a character now near and dear to my heart: a lizardfolk which was the reincarnation of the tarrasque, forced to revive now each time in a weaker and weaker form via an ancient curse. What his curser hadn't accounted for was it gaining intelligence and with that came magic. Every now and then when he'd summon his echo it would "glitch" into a shadowy image of his old incarnation and back again, reflecting the might he hungered to return to. I'm currently playing as an echo knight in my first ever campaign. I'm looking forward to the extra questing utility and eventual scouting potential it has while keeping the game fighter-level simple for me. Not as much utility as, say, a Wizard, but I didn't want to deal with managing Spell Slots while I'm just learning the game. And all I had to do was have a long talk about what they would and wouldn't allow for the echo. We basically decided that it's a creature until it isn't (mainly because my DM thought that the lack of flanking advantage and inability to be hit by spells was super dumb), and we're both agreeing to use common sense to ignore dumb stuff that the echo being a creature enables.

There is one way you can still benefit from flanking while attacking from the Echo's location, and it's only situationally useful.
If you (actual self) are flanking an enemy with one of your (real, not-object) allies, and you choose to make an attack on that same enemy from your Echo's space (that creature that you and another ally are already flanking is within the Echo's reach as well) then when you attack through your Echo's space, because you are making the attack and you are benefiting from flanking vs that enemy, the Echo attack will also benefit from the flanking- even if the Echo isn't in a position that's particularly advantageous.
What's the point? Well, one you can look cool by alternating attacks with your cool Echo. But it's also the only real way to benefit from flanking for your Unleash Incarnation attacks, by RAW. Usually you would try to get advantage from another source instead.
EDIT: I guess it can also be used to have advantage on ranged attacks against an enemy adjacent to you, without having disadvantage on the attack rolls and without requiring a feat to remove said disadvantage. You flank with an ally, then have the echo shoot them with the bow/pistol/whatever from afar. You are flanking the enemy, you make the attacks from the Echo's space, and you gain whichever flanking benefit your DM has chosen to run in their campaign. I don't think the flanking rules even state you need to be threatening the enemy with a melee weapon (only that you need to be in proper positioning with an ally), nor does it specify that only your melee attacks benefit from the advantage on attack rolls.

Rules as written, no I don't think so, but what you launched would stop... but only because the only time it references the object "striking" something is when it hits a creature, it impacts objects. I think what's more interesting is that technically the echo has no stated weight and is an object, so you could, by raw, catapult it 90 feet in a direction, then move it normally and teleport to it... now if only there was a way to make it survive hitting the target... It's very hard to give an object temporary HP and an abjuration wizard can only shield creatures.... There’s nothing that says the Echo falls after you move it upward. So you could position it above an enemies head (while using a long weapon) and just stab at them while remaining out of their reach. And also if there’s a flying enemy, you could just keep moving the echo next to them in air and attack them/when they try to fly away they would provoke opp attacks.
Also it works like a lite version of misty step, because you can manifest the echo any place you can see (within 15ft).. need to get inside that locked house? As long as there’s a window you can look through, you can use an echo to teleport inside stealthily

my favourite interaction with the echo knight is the armourer artificer. When you attack with your thunder gauntlets if you hit, that target will have disadvantage on any attack that isn't directed at you, therefore you can stand 30+ ft away, have the echo next to them, punch them, now they have disadvantage against the echo (also the thunder gauntlets don't say attacks against creatures, so the whole "echo isn't an object" speel doesn't apply)

Played an Echo Knight for the first time, in a horror campaign. I channeled my life-long love of eldritch and body-horror into the concept. My echo is flavored as a long, somewhat fleshy centipede that attacked me while I was patrolling at night. When I woke up, I found it attached to my body, tapping into my jugular, altering/digging a channel into my body to coil around me and stay somewhat flush to my skin. The lower third fits into a marsupial-like flesh pocket it created, lined with stoma and shunts into my digestive and circulatory systems, having consumed several of my organs to do so. It is now responsible for several of my essential life functions, such as filtering my blood. I creeped out the other three people at the table a few times, mission accomplished.

First, action cost: the Echo grants you a new condition to use your reaction to make an opportunity attack. Warcaster also needs you to use a reaction to cast the spell. Unless you can somehow get a second reaction you cannot use both features.
Second, the condition of "provokes an opportunity attack from you" is not met: the Echo feature lets you use your reaction to make an opportunity attack, it is never "provoked from you". The feats Polearm Master and Sentinel do specify "Creatures provoke opportunity attacks", the Echo feature is worded differently. The feature would need to be worded as "[...] moves at least 5 feet away from it provoke an opportunity attack from you. You make that attack as if you were in the Echo's space".

Manifest Echo states: "When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, YOU can use YOUR reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature AS IF YOU WERE IN THE ECHO'S SPACE."
War Caster states: "When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from YOU(...)"
If the Manifest Echo specified the ECHO, instead of YOU "can make an OA using your reaction", or if War Caster stated "when a creature MOVES 5 FEET AWAY FROM YOU" instead of "PROVOKES AND OA FROM YOU". then you would be correct. But by RAW and RAI, the info in the video is correct.
This means when the creature provokes an OA from you, that is enough for you to cast a spell with War Caster instead of making a normal attack, so only one reaction is used. Again by both RAW and RAI.
Going back to the "When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it(...)", you cannot forget the wording of the last bit "(...)You make that attack as if you were in the Echo's space". So even if RAW it may be a bit wonky, it still checks out as it's clearly meant to use your reaction and OA.
Technically as stated in the video, it's an object whose only purpose is to function as a secondary valid position for it's owner. It's easier to consider that an Echo Knight is in both places at the same time for the purposes of attacking and OAing a target.

@@antonioperestrelo986 I admit that my arguments depend on your interpretation of what "provokes an opportunity attack" means. My interpretation is that a feature must explicitly say it provokes attacks of opportunity like Sentinel or Polearm Master otherwise it does not qualify.
If your interpretation is that any feature that lets you use your reaction to make an opportunity attack counts as "provoking an opportunity attack" it is fair, but it is not strictly RAW.
RAI is unclear. I think RAI disallows it just like it uses a fixed 5ft range rather than the Knight's reach and does not let them use Polearm Master when an enemy closes up on the Echo.
My DM would easily allow me to use War Caster this way. It's not really breaking anything and you have to build for it, I think it should be allowed. But strictly speaking, RAW is not clear.

See my idea is to utilize the Charger Feat with the Echo to amplify low-tier DPS. Using a Vhuman who starts with Charger then taking Mobile at 4th level(as well as a monk multi-class but I'll save that for a post somewhere).
You start your turn by bonus-action manifesting your echo on your enemy if they're within 30 feet of you. Then you run in a direction of your choosing in a straight line, then swap to your echo, delivering the attack which is +5 to Hit and for Damage. If you then take unarmed fighting and don't have a shield, a point-buy Fighter at this level can hit a damage value of at minimum 1d8(~4)+8 with a 16 strength mod. The key there is the +8 both for attacks and for damage. Alternatively, if you're using a Greatsword with Great Weapon Fighting you can achieve a 2d6+8, giving a roughly equivalent damage value but with a higher potential return on investment(that being a max damage of 12+8).
Once you hit 5th level this gets a bit obnoxious because of your double Fighter attack, meaning you can use this particular form of attack twice in your turn, giving you a straightforward damage-per-turn equivalent to a 3rd level spell(that being either 4d6(approx. 12) or 2d8(approx. 8) + 16 damage). At the absolute minimum with a Greatsword that is a minimum damage per turn of 20 total, assuming(which is FAIRLY likely thanks to the +8 to hit). This would even allow you to save your Action Surge for things like Dodging, Helping, or other potential benefits that can increase your potency without the need to even use magic.
Then, at 6th level you take your 2 ASI into Strength.
7th level to 12th level is ALL going into Drunken Master Monk. Unarmored Defense and Martial Arts are a non-factor. The main things we're shooting for here are Ki Points for Reaction Economy and the Drunken Technique. At 12th level this can bring your total movement up to 65, allowing you to do basically whatever you want and be anywhere on the battlefield you want.

The echo knight's attack should still get advantage if flanking regardless of raw. If using that optional rule. The fact that it is an object not withstanding. The purpose behind giving advantage to flanking as I understand it is one of economy. All of a combat turn is 6 seconds. The target of the attack is engaged for those 6 seconds by the creature(s) in front of it and possibly to one side. This is already assuming a large amount of dexterous skill on the target’s behalf. Presumably being able to defend and interact with up to 4 tiles worth of opponents in up to 6 seconds. All of whose actions according to the rules are happening simultaneously. So the attacks that happen on the flanking tiles have to essentially go uncountered/undefended. The echoes attack would still come from this indefensible direction in that same 6 seconds. To say that the attack itself doesn't get advantage because it technically originates from an object under control of a creature and not an actual creature is more gimmicky than not and undermines the rationale behind the flanking mechanic.

It came about when I made a vergil clone in dnd (echo fighter 3/swords bard 3/hexblade warlock 14) and yes he was as op as he usually is where he's introduced to any medium (mvc3, and special edition dmc)
-can the echo knight smite? (Paladin or Eldritch)
-can the echo knight benefit from devil's sight in the spell darkness
-can the echo knight use defensive flourish (or any sword flourish in general)
    -does your knight proc sentinel?
-does your knight benefit from hexblade's curse or the invocation cursed blade?
-does your knight benefit from +1 and above magical weapons you are wielding?

I have been wondering about how the 2nd bullet point interacts with bonus action attacks. As written a BA Attack cannot originate from the Echo's location, since that requires an attack made through the attack action. On the other hand, the creature of the subclass frequently runs that part "wrong" as well by letting the Echo Knight make off-hand attacks from the Echo's location.

  • @Zr0din

Second bullet point question. I am an Echo Knight fighter with a short sword and a Bow and arrow. I am facing my enemy and I manifest my echo 15 ft away to my left (bonus action). I have two attacks because of level, I attack with a short sword on one attack and a bow from my echo on my second attack.
Is there anything that says both attacks need to be the same (If my short sword is in hand during manifestation does the echo need to take any action to take out their bow?)/ related in any way?
If I tell the Echo to move 15 more feet away, is that taken off of MY (the Knight's) movement speed that round? I assume that the Echo's movement happens in the Knight's movement phase. If the Knight and the echo are running parallel, they would only make 15 feet of progress?

    • @someusername9591

You'd still be the one making the attack so you wouldn't be able to shoot your bow unless you dropped your shortsword, but if you had 2 different one handed weapons the feature doesn't state that you can't, so most likely you can. Same thing for the movement, nothing says that the echo and knight share movement. AS a matter of fact, I don't think the echo has a movement speed to begin with, as it is an object, the feature just states that you can mentally command it to move.

Finally, move up to 30 ft... Then repeat the following process for each Echo if applicable.

As long as you do not use your Bonus Action in order to "dual wield attack" your enemy. Then you can carry two non light weapons in each hand, but you can only use one weapon of one hand per turn. Thus, as the Eldritch Knight. You can wield two double handed Great Swords but you must double one of them in order to make an attack with it. Outside of this, you can just Attack or Shove (Kick) your enemies by using the Feat: Tavern Brawler. (Versatile Weapons are bit easier for this, without the Feat: Dual Wielder.)
Although, to what extent can an Echo mimic your equipment? But for video game logic... I would say... That if you have a bow and a sword on both hands, then you cannot use the bow because you need a free hand to "properly" use that weapon. Aka. For the Echo to use arrows with their free hand. Crossbows are in the same technicality.
Do not give your Echo throw able weapons since you will have to make the Echo pick up its Echo Weapon.

As a note if you find yourself fighting an echo knight and they start spamming echoes all over the battle field your best option is to use magic missile. Multiple targets, guaranteed hits and the echos have a health of 1 so a first level spell can remove 3 turns of setup. I've personally been wanting to do a swarm ranger echo knight. Having the hunters mark or hexblade curse for on hit damage boost is lovely and I personally love the flavor of my swarm issuing forth and coalescing into a mirror of myself. Only unfortunate thing is you can't cast through the echo like you could with a familiar so no vine whip from the echo.

If you multiclass your Echo Knight to be a subclass with a companion, then when you summon your Echo does your Echo have an Echo companion? Like a Ranger Beast Master with animal companion. Casters with a familiar inherently tied to them? Or in my case, I'm building a potential Echo Knight/Artificer Battle Smith that has a Steel Defender. The companion is an integral part of the class.
In my case, the concept in this - Warforged, so my character appears as a construct. His steel defender is a construct humanoid and same size/build, and it looks like him (except less gear of course). It looks at first glance like there are 2 of me. Then I summon an Echo. Now with my echo there, it looks like there seems to be 3 of me. Or... does my Echo have its inseparable companion Steel Defender also, in which case it now looks at first glance like there are 4 of me? The real me, my Steel Defender, my Echo, and my Echo's Steel Defender? I have searched online and cannot seem to find ANY place that even begins to address this.

Its a good video except I disagree with it not being able to move through terrain. It feels deliberate that when you summon your echo, it can only be in an unoccupied space "you can see" vs you can mentally command the echo to move up to 30 feet in any direction. No mentioned of line of sight, or not being able to move through obstructions, terrain, etc. That to me seems like you can move it in ANY direction whether there are obstacles like walls or doors in the way or not. If you move into say a mountain or a wall that turns out to be 20 feet thick and its inside the wall or mountain at the end of its movement, it just dies.
      Thats my interpretation at least.

It's only opportunity attacks that treat you as if you were in the echo's space. I imagine that by extension it treats you as if you weren't in your space, but I honestly don't know. I'm not sure that there's any rule that states you can't occupy 2 spaces at once and it doesn't say "as if you were in the echo's space instead of your own". Mechanically speaking the Echo does nothing. You can still flavour it however you want.
If you are wielding a weapon with Reach enemies provoke opportunity attacks when they move away from 10ft of you, no matter if you have Polearm Master or not. PAM adds that they provoke opportunity attacks when they enter your reach as well. Manifest Echo ignores both of these things, it only lets you make an opportunity attack when they move away from 5 ft of your echo no matter your weapon or feats.
You cannot dip into Eldritch Knight if you are an Echo Knight since they are both Fighter subclasses, unless you homebrew it. You can still get those cantrips from other dips or feats.
Manifest echo specifies you can make attacks from the Attack action from your Echo's location. You cannot attack with Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade from your Echo's location since it's not part of the Attack action, unless maybe if you are a Bladesigner wizard using their special Extra Attack feature.
The vast majority of spells cannot be cast from your echo. The few exceptions are those that target something "you can see" while you are seeing trough your echo, and you must still meet any other restrictions (like range) from your own location.

Multi Classing between sub classes of the same class is no differently to multiclassing in sub classes in different classes. You only take the sub class specific mechanics and not to double dib in the core mechanics of the main class. So no "2x Extra Attack" on the first Extra Attack availability to the Fighter.
But like all multiclassing... Check with your DM.
