I come back to this song year after year.
This may be the greatest midwestern anthem I've ever heard. It speaks in a simple and honest voice, so familiar that it might as well be gospel.
    I know this life.
    I know this despair.
    I've seen these seasons pass.

I learned about this song from playing MLB 2K8 on my Wii back home in Seattle. But that was a long time ago and since then I've moved to Minnesota for college. Now I'm on Washington talking to the river. Poetic.

There's not a damn thing wrong with straight-ahead rock and roll. And these cats do it better than just about any band alive.

I first heard this in the Hard Rock Cafe in Manchester. It was on one of the TVs behind the bar. My date was chatting away. I turned my head to the tv, listened for the lyrics, Google’s then and found this little gem. For some reason, my date didn’t appreciate this little bit of research 🤣🤣

We heard about on NOR just after Boys and Girls in America came out, then we drove to Chicago to see them at the Metro. That was a top ten music moment, and I’ve been going to concerts since 1968z

The hold steady are good because the songs they write seem to be about themselves. They write songs that seem to be about partying in minneapolis when they were teenagers. They sound like a bunch of suburban dads trying to rekindle thier youth by making a band. Which is why they're so cool.

Wish bands like this were bigger but there’s just not getting themselves out there enough. To many rock bands are content to have music as a ‘career’ instead of wanting to be the biggest bands in the world!!

Pfft, buck up. You can't change art because of events that happened after it. I went over that bridge shortly before that happened, and I know it could have easily been me in one of those cars, but there's no way that I feel awkward or odd about a lyric.
