Fertilizing ALL the Container Fig Trees: The Timeline

- I’ve had great results with 4 heavy feedings starting shortly after bud break at intervals of once per week. This year I’m trying 6. That was with a 9-45-15. I can’t say for sure exactly how much each tree has received. However, once my bag of 9-45-15 is gone, I’ll be switching to a 10-5-8. That by my estimation is the right fertilizer ratio for figs. Maybe even a 10-4-12. I’m still undecided. Additionally this year, I will be foliar spraying at one month intervals Dyna-Gro Protekt even into the fall. Which is a 0-0-3 with silica. Literature states some spectacular benefits from silica and anecdotally seems to be worth it in figs. Especially for those of us that have issues with rust. I’m hoping this product will aid in better lignification, cold hardiness and overall plant health. Ph should be around 7 and there’s an argument to be made for something between 7-7.5 for better uptake of magnesium. Lime for the micronutrients is highly recommended and of course make sure all of your bases are covered in terms of micros.
What you don’t want to do:
There’s very little reason to apply nitrogen feedings after you have your desired fruit set. Nitrogen is the main factor in annual shoot production. While necessary, too much will ruin proper lignification and lower fruit quality. You will without any doubt see more cracking in your fruits and I know some will think that’s beautiful, but your fruits will not taste more beautiful. Ideally you want your trees to completely cease growth after achieving your desired fruit set. This is accomplished with ceasing nitrogen and decreasing waterings after fruit set. For some of us that’s nearly impossible. It’s certainly possible in containers, but getting that right is again the most ideal scenario.

Thank you! Wonderful video. Such a comprehensive overview with detailed tips and instructions. I'm a beginner and this is yrs of trial and error saved.
Finally somebody talking about diatomaceous earth as a silica source! It's a very important nutrient, especially for drought and pest resistance, yet so little quality information about sources. It seems the vast majority of sources on the internet recommend some overpriced liquid silica fertilizer when low and behold cheap, readily available diatomaceous earth does the same thing.
My good friend runs a very large nursery, and uses a liquid automatic delivery fertilizer system. He told me regular maintenance is the key. He also says he uses multiple "filters" easy for him it never freezes in Ventura, Ca.
Thanks Ross for the tip! I'm surprised you didn't also include alittle boron that you can get from Borax to balance out your fertilizer mix. I remember reading the middle east, especially Isreal has the highest concentration of natural boron in their soil than any where in the world. And we know they love to grow figs!
Look good Ross. You've got it all figured out! I'm going to try major pinching this year
Thank you I learned something, never thought Diatomaceous earth can be used as fertilizer beside insect repellant
Nice to know about different fertilizer.
Good video Ross , love seeing what others are using for fetilizer, very informative.
Las Vegas is ideal for figs, if the fig loves heat. Man, do we have heat. What Italian variety of fig do you recommend?
hey Ross, im a big fan of the Chanel and blog, just wondering why use a high phosphorous fertilizer when your trees are breaking dormancy?, i usually give them high nitrogen tp give them a boost so the can develop some leaves, then i move to a balance 18-18-21 like miracle gro tomato, once i see figlets move to high phosphorous
It would be great if you put the exact recipe for the fertilizer… of diatomaceous earth, ironite and lime. Such are 1/2 cup of diatomaceous, 1/2 cup of ironite and 1/2 a c cup of lime.
I am worried about using to much of one of the items and harming my figs.
YES! Great idea!
Hi, I have very little plants that I’m growing in my garden, so I want it to be very simple and easy, and cost less, I can’t buy all of fertilizer you recommended, I have so far Dolomite Lime, Miracle bloom booster Flower Food, Diatomaceous Earth, would these be enough for my a fig plant, and a tomato plant, strawberry, blueberry that in the pots, and some flowers in ground, as hydrangeas, roses, azaleas, also sasanqua in the pot.
I’d appreciate your help, I am very beginner on gardening correctly, I really am getting confused as listening on UA-cam.
I live in Germantown TN.
would love to hear your lessons on fertilizer after this year, especially since you abandoned slow released granules. are you going back to slow release next year?
Hey Ross, great info and always I'm always learning. I got the fig growing "bug" a couple of months ago. Went from 3 general fig types in pots to a total of 11 in the space of 2 months. Can I suggest that for obvious reasons, your camera panning is slowed down please. Thank you.
hmm, from a layman's pov, I've got one tree, in ground. any brand name fert that will have all I need?
Ross, You did a mix of ironite, diamacious earth, and garden lime. I don't believe I saw what the ratios of those were. I'm getting ready to topdress my parents fig plants before I leave today. I was wondering if you could give me the ratios of those?
Equal parts of each. Read labels for application rates
@@RossRaddi thanks very much. Just applied a quarter cup of the mix to each 5 gallon container
I really enjoy your videos, but watching them on a big computer monitor makes me dizzy. If you could try holding the camera still for longer, it would make your videos so much more watchable. Thanks!
Ross, I agree with Michael, please try to not move constantly it does make it hard to watch.
So ironite will do the same as azomite yes? I also fed mine a little worm castings. I have 5 or so still in containers that I will leave until winter I just didn’t have enough time to plant them.
Ps- I just read an article about watering blueberries with water with white vinegar (1/2 to 1 cup per gallon) have you ever heard that? It makes sense since it’s pure acetic acid?
Ps you should mention using a synthetic fert you will need to flush the pots so salts don’t build up. I use doctor earth’s fruit tree and compost tea.
Monique, I have used a lot of compost tea in the past, but I found in my experience, in pots, it gets washed out fairly quickly especially in areas where you have to water a lot like in the SouthWestern US where it reaches 100+ every day for 4-5 months. I used artificial fertilizer with filtered water and because I tend to water so often, it does not build up. I constantly am monitoring my PH and it is always 6.0-7.0 which is where I want it to be. In the ground though the PH here will rise to 8 easily because of the soil, it is a battle to keep the PH low or neutral.

Yeah here it gets so hot I have to be careful with the water (we get a decent amount of rain, like Florida ) - last year I had plants that would dry out on the top half of the pot and the bottom remained moist (despite 2 sets of drainage on sides and bottoms) and the heat baked the roots. Sinking them works better for me then the ground wicks away the moisture. In ground is best the roots stay nice and cool in the clay with a good bit of mulch.
Still learning lol, I come from zone 7 so this climate is still a thing for me to get used to.
Thanks for the reply.
Which drip irrigation system do you use? I bought a line from Lowes and by the end of the first season, it broke apart in the cold weather. I am thinking of converting an old rubber hose by perforating it, thoughts?
Get the real drip irrigation lines from a drip website. I use something called Spot Spitters.
What amounts of lime and diatomaceous earth and ironite you use
1/4 cup per 5g of soil.
Why are your trees so leafless?
2 fourth cups ?? Quarter cup and half cup ?
CAmera is moving too quick felt dizzy I stopped watching please slow down your action no need to see every inch in your beautiful garden few samples is fine good day
Can I use MiracleGro all purpose plant food?
Yes.
Hey Ross, have you ever used compost tea?
ceili
He actually answered this under my comment- look further up in the comments under my name he explained to me what he does and why
Can you ship the dragon fruit?
6:47 So... 2/4ths of a cup is 1/2 cup, right? LOL! Math is interesting.

Hey Ross, love your videos. In turf management a lot of us use Feature 6-0-0 to get micronutrients, figured it might be worth a look. I'm trying to learn more about fruiting trees and you've been a lot of help. PS the singular for granular fert is a prill.

Have you ever used horse manure ?
No.
I really want to watch this...but serious motion sickness.
The camera is moving too fast.. There is hardly any time to focus on the objects. It is irritating watching this video !
