      Wierd question, but would it be possible to get your raw data for the tests? I currently dive with scuba pro nova and supernova fins but I'm considering looking in to split fins because I use a lot of air. I would like to see how split fins compare to what I'm using before I drop any money for another pair. Thanks!

    Always love these articles to stay up on new equipment. Bought my first pair of Jet fins in 1968. Also use Nova fins full foot and open heel. Used Mares & Cressi on a rental dives, they were comfortable.

    Great video - thanks. I have a pair of Mares Avanti Plus for travel and Atomic split fins for my regular diving here in NZ. Mares are just perfect for cruisy, warm water diving. Re the Atomic - I’ve seen some online feedback that suggests these are over-rated/difficult to manoeuvre. My personal experience (after over 100 dives with them) - they are just fine in terms of frog kicking, back finning and general slow speed manoeuvrability. You just need a little patience, given that fluidity in the centre of the fin. Patience and deliberate motion is a good thing when it comes to diving! Where they really excel is at the end of a dive. When you surface in turbulent seas, possibly with some current, the Atomic split fins are absolute weapons. Even with a gentle flutter kick you will find yourself back at the boat well before everyone else. Obviously, it’s not a race/who cares who gets there first. But when your enegery might be low, it’s a real positive. I couldn’t recommend them more. 🙌🏻

    Hello, great video! Thank you for your effort. There is just a small issue with how you have identified one on the fins. The “ScubaPro GO Sport fins” you reviewed are actually the “ScubaPro GO Travel”. The GO Sport is intended to be used with boots whilst the Go Travel is a barefoot design.

    You earned a new sub with this video. Nicely done. Really appreciate your positive attitude about all of the fins finding good and bad in everything and not just bashing the ones you didn't like...way too many content creators who think it's cool to just bash products (especially brands) they don't like, huge turn off. You let the product speak for itself, undaunted by what others think or say. Loved it.

    • @DIVEindotcom
      @DIVEindotcom  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for those kind words! There are no "bad" fins, just fins that are better suited for the job and/or the diver. It's better to understand your individual diving needs and find the fin that fits you, rather than just throwing money at whatever's popular.

    Really good analysis! To add a little detail to the RK3s, the regular fins are effectively neutral, but when you're tuning your trim the HDs with their higher density are noticeably heavier and less buoyant. Per pair the HDs are about 0.3kg/0.6lb negative for Medium, going up to 0.4kg/0.8lb negative for Super.

    You tried different types of fins. But over a 100-foot distance, all the fins had almost the same number of kick cycles, around 22 to 24. So, where exactly does the so-called stronger propulsion of some fins show up?

    Great Review! I have been using the same pair of fins Mares Avanti for over 40 years. I really have needed a new pair of fins for sometime. I just haven't been able to make up my mind. After your video I think I am down to the Diverite XT or Scubapro Go Travel. The price of the GO Travel fins are great compared to others.. There is a trip I want to take is why I was considering the Go Travel. However, I have been worried they would not have enough power. I prefer doing the frog kick and I prefer spring straps so the Diverite XT's sound great.

  • @mathiassalomonsen

    Nice work. My impression is that optimized fins, especially split fins, are constructed for for a pretty narrow window of performance and limited kick style in order to optimize the efficient ratio for a certain amount of energy with the less toll on your muscles. My experience is that these optimized fins often fails in cases you need a higher amount of propulsion energy, such as heavy equipment with more drag (dry suit, double set, stages bottle), strong current, heavy wave, towing a diver or plain panic mode. Would have been interesting to have a pull or push test how much force you can propel before the fins fails and loose its structure (e.g. swim against a load cell or tow line with loading cell). Or just simply compare the experience between an easy setup with a setup with high drag (e.g. towing a fellow diver).

    Hello, nice test ! I would have like something about the easyness of those fins, if they are heavy to use or not. Having small legs heavy fins exhaust me a lot so wobly ones are easier. But to go backward with wobly fins is very difficult ! I was interested in the Apeks RK3 but I am afraid they could be quite stiff and then maybe tiring to use...

    lead Dive tours in honolulu hawaii 4 wrecks and reefs all day and that strong surf, the mares quatro fins are my winners. they are light for the amount of diving i do and they flick back after each kick for extra thrust. legs dont get tired and they move me fast. ive used hollis, oceanic, scuba pro and aqua lung and the split fins same as on here. they all arent worth the dollar they are charging in my opinion but the hollis do have strong thrust but are heavy too heavy.

    Thanks much for the comprehensive review. I learned much from this. Btw my go to fins are the Apollo Bio Fins. It is a Japanese product which might not be widely available where you are, and not included in your test. However is is a great product. A split fin from solid rubber material. Great ease of finning like split fins but with great solid feeling of the channel fins. You should try and review it one day.

      That is the best question ever.
      For any fin, it depends on your finning style and your needs.
      If you're traveling a lot then pick the Aqualung Storm fins voted Best for Travel. We found that the Dive Rite XT fins work best for Frog Kick so if that's your go-to kick style, then these are the ones to pick. If you're looking for heavy fins then pick the Zeagle Recon fins rated Best Paddle-Style fins.
      We rated the ScubaPro Jet Fins as the Best All-Around fins, so that would be a good pick for a fin that does it all really well.

      @cruelolol Absolutely not pointless. Pick up a phone or a computer and order them. They are not in retail shops because they sell directly to the consumer, but that does not mean they are hard to get... in fact, they are easier to get. To say it's pointless to review one of the best finds on the market because they don't play the markup game of selling through dive shops is idiotic.

      @tvelocidad lol yeah okay bro. Have you seen the costs to ship a pair anywhere outside of the US? Don't take my word for it. It's been talked to death on scuba board for years. Typical American, can't fathom anything that doesn't effect them.

    For your helicopter turns, the rotation should be with the fins. You're using your whole body and just really lacking any finesse. It helps if you don't look down and cross your arms.

      You missed the focus here. Andy is using the same techniques to test a huge amount of fins for comparison; more fin types than any other online evaluation up to this date. If you want to criticize, criticize the testing. Crapping on a huge and honest effort like this is petty. Feel free to post your link to your “superior finning techniques” channel.

      Yes, it's not included, but we're testing it and will be adding it to the guide once we're don with the test.

    The faster you kick smoke on the water the faster it goes, you can not kick that fast with nonsplitfins because it is to heavy to make the same movement. There is no drag with smoke on the water but with nonsplit fins it is. After 45 min dive you can still move as fast as you like with smoke on the water but with nonsplitfins you will absolutely take it slow. It is fun to go fast when you want to and fun is the point with sportdiving.

      @@jonnieinbangkok i assume you meant one of the best all around fins? Interesting as I currently have a pair of Mares Avanti Quattro+ as a first fin. the shop I went to didnt have the rk3 and have the mares in green as I wanted the visibility.
      How does the HD compare to the standard RK3?

    • @jonnieinbangkok
      @jonnieinbangkok 3 місяці тому +1

      @@MysticalDragon73 Yes that's what I meant. The RK3s are used by many military and public safety divers, which is a pretty good recommendation. The HD's (high density [compound]) are a bit stiffer and have more negative buoyancy than the regular model. They are better if you regularly dive in high current or wear thick 7mm wetsuits or a dry-suit. If you need visibility, the regular model comes in yellow and pink and the HD in orange.
