  • The Competition Between the Sirens and The Muses - Told by Hera
In this tale the Sirens, once nymphs that served Demeter, cursed to be half-bird half-woman creatures. Hera, fearing the power that Demeter showed the world - baits the Sirens into competing with the muses in a singing competition!
Living Mythology is an attempt to entertain, relax and educate all in the one place. We are trying to forge narratives so that people can experience the religions and mythologies of the world as they were meant to be. Not as dry academic monoliths, but as living breathing tales and parables as experienced by the peoples who worshipped these beings, in an attempt to make sense of their own lives and the world around them.
This channel is in its infancy, so we hope to improve and develop it as we gain more experience.
All of the tales are taken from very conflicting traditions across many centuries, so there will be many a moment when decisions need to be made to create a more cohesive narrative. If we present something that seems to be in contrast to details, rest assured we have researched many forms of the traditions and come to the conclusions we have done to form the videos.
There will NEVER be total agreement on any of these narratives due to the history and differing ways they developed over the centuries.
These videos are for entertainment and an easy gateway to the subject. If you wish more academic details then please direct your attention to the wide source material and others who perform those types of academic video essays.

I am not one that loves seeing someone humiliated. But after what Demeter did to the gods and mankind, I have to say it felt oddly satisfying. Though I feel for the sirens. It is all too often that lesser creatures are abused by the gods. They are used as pawns and examples over events they lack any real agency or blame for. As always Sir Baldermort and Lady Lightbringer, it was a pleasure to listen to you both at work.

I will not blame Zeus. Demeter is a full-fledged adult and she chose to throw a god level temper tantrum killing millions of innocent people. She refused to relent, even if it meant everyone died. THAT was a conscious choice, and thus, Zeus is not to blame.

@@zachariahmousa7652Persephone did not marry hades by choice. He consulted Zeus, kidnapped her (Persephone cried out for her mother so she clearly wasn’t cool with being kidnapped) and Hermes later Persephone in the underworld, crying on hades bed/couch. Maybe their relationship got better, but she was not happy about it at first nor did it start off as consensual.

The love and/or wrath of a mother knows no bounds. Several individuals witnessed Persephone's abduction yet remained silent. All what the Olympians endured could have been avoided had someone said something. Humanity lived in a golden age of great harmony when Cronus ruled, I don't agree with him devouring his children but at least we never suffered when he sat on the throne.

Not to mention the Immediate minded and shallow wishes of most human beings. Hearing this it is obvious to see how humans fall victim for sirens. Look what people do to attain so called societal standard "Happiness" and less than benevolent desires. celebrities are our greatest precedents.

A great tale of intrigue and power, showing how Hera is THE queen on Olympus! I think the whole point of this whole party and contest was Hera demonstrating the authority both she and Zeus commanded over the other gods, and subtly letting Demeter know not to trifle with them again. Hera practically dared Demeter to try and save her Sirens, and in front of the whole court, backed down from here, to everyone present that Zeus and Hera were the true power and authority among the Olympians.

So can someone explain how the sirens losing that way was a power move by Hera? Honestly curious/trying to comprehend.

    • @livingmythology1405
      @livingmythology1405  Місяць тому +6

Honestly it’s all in the politics
Demeter had just displayed defiance of the rulers decision and shown great power. (With the winter brought to the world and refusal to stop when ordered)
The sirens were her nymphs - her people - she is seen here unable, unwilling, to defend her own people against the rulers - Hera and Zeus
The muses are also linked to Zeus and so are representative of him in this competition - as glory and pride would go to the winner/ whoever is their linked god.
If the muses with - so do Zeus and Hera
If the sirens win - Demeter would have won in a way also.
But this showed that Demeter is not willing to challenge the rulers to save her people, and so cannot be seen as rival to Zeus if any god/goddess started a coup against him.
The court / everyone knows now that Demeter will not defend you, she has bent to the will of Zeus and Hera at the end of this piece.
It was a challenge - to see if Demeter would rise to defy the king again.
However the original tale doesn’t state why -
      Pausanias, Description of Greece 9. 34. 3 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) :
"[At Koroneia (Coronea) in Boiotia] is a sanctuary of Hera . . . in her hands she carried the Seirenes (Sirens). For the story goes that the daughters of Akheloios (Achelous) were persuaded by Hera to compete with the Mousai (Muses) in singing. The Mousai won, plucked out the Seirenes' feathers and made crowns for themselves out of them."
I hope this makes more sense now!
