The Atlas here is the old Star League AS7-D variant. This one has no large lasers in the arms, only four meds, an AC-20, an LRM-20 and a SRM-6. It's not the newer AS7-K with large lasers in the arm and med pulses in the torso, not the one which is the popular "default" Atlas config in MW4. Hope it clears things up somewhat ENJOY!
The atlas was probably the old Atlas AS7-D 4 medium lasers (2 to the rear), SRM 6, LRM 20, and AC 20. The LRMs have minimum range and can not be fired close. Which is why you dont see much missile fire. The AC seemed to fired as 4 vollies instead of one volley. The Warhammer is an unseen and should have won, since he was using cover effectively, but he got anxious when the Atlas overheated and did not go near cover and backed off far enough for the LRMs to get the lock and hit.
After all this time, you catch little details. Like the fact that you can see the Atlas in the upper-left of the Beagle's camera at 0:39. *"Two* unidentified targets." Or that you can just barely see it rounding the corner as the dust cloud overtakes it at 0:56. Most of all, I want the music that starts off with that "dunnnnn dunnnnn DUNNNNN" at 1:03. What a perfect motif for the Atlas. I felt my hair stand on end.
the interesting thing is that Atlas will still be evolving well into the 3060s even with the introduction of clan tech it still maintains its position and when its fully decked in clan weaponry its even MORE deadly than with standard issue inner sphere... the lesson here is not to confront an atlas if you can help it as it WILL kill you or at the very least maim u even if you take out the majority of weapons, good play by the atlas to cover the jenner while it works on getting up and retreats...
In the lore of the MW universe Mechs had a scaled-down variant of the power cores used in freaking FTL-capable Starships. If they implemented a %chance of total core meltdown "feature" (like in the old, old, original tabletop war game) then pvp would be about suiciding your heavy mechs in the middle of the enemy team rather than trading shots for fifteen to twenty minutes.
After playing MWO for a while and coming back to look at this trailer I am slightly upset... In this trailer it shows: >Detailed environment to give a sense of scale -Currently in MWO buildings looks like painted boxes >Warhammer missing shots due to Atlas knocking the mech around -Completely not in current MWO >Destructible buildings -Indestructible buildings in current MWO! =/
Well we lack a Warhammer completely and I do miss shots because of the damn screen shake abuse of LRM spam or dakka dakka. Destructible buildings is a must honestly, or at least stop having a small stone wall or ledge stop a 100 ton Atlas...
I think the issue here is that this trailer was not MWO it was from Mechwarrior 5 that was already in development at that time (2009) but was subsequently scrapped when no publisher would pick it up. Now why PGI reposted it as MWO is a mystery but maybe at the time they had nothing ready to show for MWO but still wanted or had to put something out so they threw this out.
Dirges Smith & Tinker was working with PGI at the time of this trailer's release (look in credits), but left after the legal issues (Robotech lawsuits). That's why it changed from MechWarrior 5 (or Reboot) into MechWarrior Online.
Gamuray the hell does robotech have to do with anything??? I don't get it, the mechs in mechwarrior aren't even remotely close to the mechs in robotech. What kind of hamfisted lawsuit could they pull out of their ass that could even support its own overblown weight???

I was already a fan of the Mechwarrior Franchise, having played the original on a 286/88, then MW2 on Mac "Pentium 2 clone", MW3 on my WIndows 98/2000 machine (my favorite in the series), MW 4 Black Knight, MW4 Mercenaries, on my first dual core, so, when MWO was announced, I admit to a tiny touch of joy knowing the franchise was still alive. And I felt this trailer exactly caught the flavor of the series. Great job.
MWO is a good game, but it's much faster than this, and matches usually consist of the two teams hiding behind cover, taking potshots at each other and raining down LRMs, until one of the teams feels confident enough to push. Wish I could play THIS game. A lot slower, more tactical, a nice campaign with all the customization options MWO has to offer.
I know this comment is seven years old, but god damn it I still want MWO to have a SP component. Yes yes, MW5 exists and I could buy a single player Mechwarrior game now for more money than it's seriously worth, but it still sucks massive balls that they never even gave us a mode like that trashy "Practice" mode World Of Tanks has. Fuck, it really doesn't seem /that/ complicated on their end even. All they'd have to make is the interface to set what mechs the game should spawn and a map chooser.
@@igorbukovy4313 TBH I always found the rock hugging of MW3 sorta nice even. You had to be careful of what the dimensions of your mech was so you didn't eat a ton of lasers to a side.

David Tay why do you think I put "huehuehue" around the statement. I have seen people on every video with mechs in it saying "titanfall ripoff!" even though they can be almost a decade older, and they say it like they are serious.
SirMadHornet its not even a copyright, I am just saying, ever since titanfall came out, people think that titanfall did mechs first, calling every mech game, that can be even 10-20 years older, a ripoff of titanfall. Its sad really.
well the Atlas pilot may have swapped out the lasers for AC 20s for example, or maybe the arms took enough previous battle dmg to render the weapons offline?
well we have to ask, was the atlas previously battling? I'd assume so seeing how fast its arms got blasted off, we all know the armor on a atlas is thick as hell, so it may be hes/shes out of ammo for the avail weapons left, also like I said earlier every pilot uses different weapons they are rated for and able to use effectively, SO he/she might not have every weapon available and may be set up differently...
This is the mechwarrior 5, I wanted. One day, the Unseen will be used and without any redesigns. VMI owned the rights and they were cool with it. HG is a lying, corporate greedy bully.
Here we are in 2022, 11 years after this reveal, and the game does not look or play remotely like this reveal video. Hell, an entire single player game, MW5, was created and isn't remotely as good looking as this.
I've only ever played Mechwarrior 4:Vengance and the Black Knight expansion pack, so I don't know too much about the time frames or storylines other than what was in those games. Is there a MW story website?
I'd like to see it on certain things. Bridges and structures housing volatile materials for example. The disregard for physics bothers me when a mech stomps on a car and it's perfectly fine afterwards. Seriously, who builds a car that can handle 80+ tons?
SIM is not arcade it is the exact opposite, and yes if you have a random disembodied camera floating behind your mech then it does change it. At least in they could do something like what eve online did and explain why you have a 3rd person view in the way of camera drones. So if they added little drones floating behind the mech then that I could shoot (albeit hard to hit because of size), then I would be ok with there being a third person view.
A modified Atlas AS7-D-DC: Sporting ECM, a faster engine, two small lasers, two AC/5, and two SRM 6's fit into both the left and right torso. Left arm easily destroyed due to low armor or ammo explosion.
Mechwarrior was originally released for the the SNES so being on Consoles is another similarity, on and as for Arcade based, when I played them they definitely were NOT resembling Galaga or a rail shooter which leaves the final kind of Arcade game out there, which is SIM. Changing the angle in which you see something does NOT change the kind of game it is.
FASA DID in fact get a license for the "unseen" designs. They licensed it from a Japanese company, Big West I think. However, they might not have had the authority to issue that license, depending on how you look at it.. Harmony Gold owns the US merchandising rights. They argue this includes RPGs and computer games. FASA and company of course argue they are separate business sectors and thus HG's rights don't apply. So we have years of legal tussles as a result.
@paketep that depends since first they did say the progect was scraped but that dosnt mean that they jest distroyed all of it. they may have saved it and used it as a starting point. second the people who are curently making it are actual fans of the game and are influensed by the people on the forums that say what may be a good idia to put in or what isnt a good idia. i would rather have a game made by them with the fan support then a corporate game like skyrim or cod.
Was this really in game footage though? The dev videos show some concepts that look exactly like this. plus, the new mwo looks a bit different. not knocking it, just curious.
+Evang Neiiel -- All of which started out as Macross in 1982. Robotech was the American version/adaptation of it. Many of the original mechs in Battletech (Battledroids) are taken form Japanese Anime such as Macross, Crusher Joe, Gundam etc.
Some were found(their was a lawsuit) to be "infringing" on the macross license. MWO had to remake the mechs to look different, and they didn't do to bad of a job. I just wish "Russ" had stayed true to the plan (he has been deviating from the tabletop/older game which he promised to be faithful to).
Nah dude, this is footage from a version of MechWarrior that I don't think is being made anymore. The whole project is now, what you're playing- Mech Warrior Online. Would be awesome if they continued this one though, looks amazing.
This is a trailer of MW 5, which was cancelled due to some patent dispute, just like its movie did. And after all these, things turned into MWO. So this trailer had and has nothing to do with MWO.
As said by the developers, there never was a MechWarrior 5. The same company that's working on MechWarrior Online (Piranha Games Incorporated, or PGI) is the company that produced this trailer. Notice that the trailer itself never puts a "5" anywhere in there. I think this was more or less a proof of concept to try and bring the franchise back in a big way and get the fans excited! I know I am.
this may be online and both players were fighting like the Atlas and the other....thing but the Atlas looked like a GOD DAM BOSS when they started fighting
Iknorite! I took a 2 month vacation from MWO so I wouldn't get completely burnt on it, and to give PGI time to normalize missile damage and to do something to nerf the ERPPC sniper-meta, and when I came back, I didn't read any patch notes or nuffin, and when the game starts SURPRISE! it's in 3rd person by default and I'm just like "OMFG you have GOT to be kidding me. Seriously?"
basicly, the developers of mechwarrior 5 couldn't get permission to actually create the game, so abandoned it in 2009, but now some modders have got together to make mech Warrior online, but its gunna be unofficial
So going back to when FASA existed.. The thing about the Warhammer was that it was never FASA's design, it was a Tomahawk destroid from Robotech/Macross FASA borred a lot of designs from Robotech and at some point, they had to issue re-sculpts of those borrowed designs (explaining why no warhammer model outside of the original starter set looks like the one in the trailer) Piranha Games doesn't have the permission to use those battletech designs. I believe that's why there was a lawsuit
The reason it looks so different is because all the shit from this video is from development prior to going with CryEngine3. I don't know what engine they were doing this initial development with, but it features destructible environments, so Refractor2 maybe?
The thing to remember is that Piranha games got wasted by copyright nonsense and publisher pressure. I'm fairly confident they fully intended to make the game shown here, but outside forces pushed them to make what we got instead. Granted, it's still a fun game to play, but it's definitely not got the grand sense of scale, focus on strategy, and slow pacing we'd hoped for. If I had to describe MW:O to someone, I'd say "World of Tanks, but more enjoyable."
Because this is the video they released before they actually started developing the game. I doubt destructable terrain would be useful in a MW game anyway. Personally I'd just flatten the city with LRMs so the rest of my team could have good LOS every game.
Ico light Wut? I played a single match and got a million C-Bills. That means that after 14 matches, or about an hour or two of play, you can buy the most expensive 'mech in the game, and after two matches you can buy a 'Mech to start with. It hardly requires giving up on life.
Ico light I hate to disagree, but I'm still playing and well out of the newbie bonuses. Depending on how things go I can get anywhere from 100-200k C-bills per match. (losing notwithstanding) most matches take 4-10 minutes, (and keep in mind, I'm probably below average) so if I wanted to buy a new mech for 4 million C-bills, (like my current Phoenix Hawk) I would only need to sink 4-5 hours. It isn't a no-life grind.
@NostalgicLink wait you say this is cheesey and then mention mw4's opening? dude if this is cheese then that was a mixed cheese sauce with a side of cheese.
I'm glad this is going to be free to play on the PC, but part of me wishes that the company wouldn't get sued for the use of the Warhammer mech, if that was the case then the game could have released on consoles in addition to the PC (which I think was the original intent) I can't say how much it would have been for my friends and I to play this on our Xbox's with headsets. But alas, I'm the only friend with a decent gaming computer so that means I'll have to make more friends online
Amazing how quickly the ability to improve things vanished with the original coders.

I'd assume so seeing how fast its arms got blasted off, we all know the armor on a atlas is thick as hell, so it may be hes/shes out of ammo for the avail weapons left, also like I said earlier every pilot uses different weapons they are rated for and able to use effectively, SO he/she might not have every weapon available and may be set up differently...
agreed. I like the unseen. and I would have loved to see this as a story based reboot too
i love they way the mechs explode but in the beta they just simply do a normal world explosion and then they fall :(
This is the mechwarrior 5, I wanted.
This was the coolest shit I saw as an teen, now I'm playing mech 5, still pretty good.
Too bad that the MechWarrior 5 from this trailer never happened.
I'd like to see it on certain things. Bridges and structures housing volatile materials for example. The disregard for physics bothers me when a mech stomps on a car and it's perfectly fine afterwards. Seriously, who builds a car that can handle 80+ tons?
Actually, the Locust is the one that is being added to the game next month.
SIM is not arcade it is the exact opposite, and yes if you have a random disembodied camera floating behind your mech then it does change it. At least in they could do something like what eve online did and explain why you have a 3rd person view in the way of camera drones. So if they added little drones floating behind the mech then that I could shoot (albeit hard to hit because of size), then I would be ok with there being a third person view.
they will release a coop as the game goes on but haven't announced when
Can't wait to see a trailer with CryEngine3 gameplay
when will we be seeing screenshots of the Warhammer ingame?
Mechwarrior 4 Vengence ...i love this one the most, top tier.
So my question is...aside from the online multiplayer battles, is there going to be a campaign as well?
@paketep that depends since first they did say the progect was scraped but that dosnt mean that they jest distroyed all of it. they may have saved it and used it as a starting point. second the people who are curently making it are actual fans of the game and are influensed by the people on the forums that say what may be a good idia to put in or what isnt a good idia.
i would rather have a game made by them with the fan support then a corporate game like skyrim or cod.
It's an MHD reaction, and yes this would actually be ideal since all the rising heat would give you a hot air balloon effect.
Was this really in game footage though? The dev videos show some concepts that look exactly like this. plus, the new mwo looks a bit different. not knocking it, just curious.
@IstasPumaNevada They just announced that they are using CryEngine 3 so it should at least look this good.
@SOCAdam oh and mechs from waht i know, well atleast in the TT would rarely explode on "death"
This isn't the MWO reveal. This is the old MW5 game trailer before it was canceled.
Didn't this start as a CryEngine 2 mod? Because the first time I saw something like this was on ModDB.
Robotech (anime 1985) used the Warhammer but called it the Destroid Tomahawk
Battletech (board game 1984) used the warhammer
+Evang Neiiel -- All of which started out as Macross in 1982. Robotech was the American version/adaptation of it. Many of the original mechs in Battletech (Battledroids) are taken form Japanese Anime such as Macross, Crusher Joe, Gundam etc.
Some were found(their was a lawsuit) to be "infringing" on the macross license. MWO had to remake the mechs to look different, and they didn't do to bad of a job. I just wish "Russ" had stayed true to the plan (he has been deviating from the tabletop/older game which he promised to be faithful to).
@ValentinoDagher Yeah, but it's that ONE time that it does that becomes your last time...
That Atlas walking backwards is just like, "Oh this is bullshit".
Nah dude, this is footage from a version of MechWarrior that I don't think is being made anymore. The whole project is now, what you're playing- Mech Warrior Online. Would be awesome if they continued this one though, looks amazing.
no he has more weapons, however heat and reuse times are a constant factor especially when fighting an atlas >.
This is a trailer of MW 5, which was cancelled due to some patent dispute, just like its movie did. And after all these, things turned into MWO. So this trailer had and has nothing to do with MWO.
Man if I ever meet a genie I’m wishing far an atlas with unlimited ammo and no overheating.
Thank you, kind sir. Your post is truly awesome.
Most anticipated game
honestly if this was the product we recived i wouldn't complain. feels very gritty and "boots on the ground" if that makes sense.
this may be online and both players were fighting like the Atlas and the other....thing but the Atlas looked like a GOD DAM BOSS when they started fighting
Seriously?"
Mechwarrior franchise pls. Make this a game and take my money!
+Pete Rivera mwomercs.com/
@SOCAdam Your mech doesnt go critical everytime it blows up tho.
basicly, the developers of mechwarrior 5 couldn't get permission to actually create the game, so abandoned it in 2009, but now some modders have got together to make mech Warrior online, but its gunna be unofficial
You didn't read Michael Stackpole's BT novels much, did you? :)
I think it'd be a smart idea to reupload this without the "in-game footage" watermark.
@Stormeris lol like the mauler for instance.
So going back to when FASA existed..
The thing about the Warhammer was that it was never FASA's design, it was a Tomahawk destroid from Robotech/Macross
FASA borred a lot of designs from Robotech and at some point, they had to issue re-sculpts of those borrowed designs (explaining why no warhammer model outside of the original starter set looks like the one in the trailer)
Piranha Games doesn't have the permission to use those battletech designs. I believe that's why there was a lawsuit
@novacat415 Nope, Hula girl gone by 0:27, its @0:25
Tip: Currently SRMs are actually broken in terms of hit registration. You are reasonably better off with streaks.
The reason it looks so different is because all the shit from this video is from development prior to going with CryEngine3. I don't know what engine they were doing this initial development with, but it features destructible environments, so Refractor2 maybe?
NOTE footage might not resemble actual game play
@trinex7 It's free to play. google Mechwarrior online.
This is the pre-lawsuit hiatus MW5 trailer.
эхх, такую детализацию окружения и анимацию бы в мво
how is this going to translate to current gen? i remember having to play mechwarrior 3 with a tricked out joystick
Your face when you will never, ever, ever get a real Mechwarrior game - let alone one set during the Succession Wars - ever again.
Instead we get an online game where you have to give up on life or buy all the things. FUCK.
With no cheesy FMVs, no overwrought voice acting, no interesting missions, and no map variety.
Bein' a mechwarrior ain't easy in 2014.
Ico light Wut? I played a single match and got a million C-Bills. That means that after 14 matches, or about an hour or two of play, you can buy the most expensive 'mech in the game, and after two matches you can buy a 'Mech to start with. It hardly requires giving up on life.
BlackFenixGaming Aaaaaaaaaaand you got sucked in by the 'newbie bonus', which adds crazy bonuses to your first few games.
It's called BETA for a reason, and nice breaking the NDA. And if your in with a good group, its really fun
@NostalgicLink wait you say this is cheesey and then mention mw4's opening? dude if this is cheese then that was a mixed cheese sauce with a side of cheese.
I'm glad this is going to be free to play on the PC, but part of me wishes that the company wouldn't get sued for the use of the Warhammer mech, if that was the case then the game could have released on consoles in addition to the PC (which I think was the original intent)
I can't say how much it would have been for my friends and I to play this on our Xbox's with headsets.
But alas, I'm the only friend with a decent gaming computer so that means I'll have to make more friends online
Good question. Is MW5 and MWO one in the same now or what?
looking forward to it
It's lost to time because it doesn't exist
