    It's nice to hear somebody on UA-cam say "solder" rather than "sodder"

    The first computer I remember my family owning; I used to complain about the lack of color and a CD-ROM drive

    this is very satisfying. I used to recover and fix these in the early 90s. Had 10 perfectly working CCII's upgraded for the internet and used a couple as mail servers.I miss the old irc mac channels. Was so fun.

      @@theserialport oh god so long ago. It was pretty straight forward but I remember getting the software from the irc channel. And I should correct myself. It was the late 90s and early 2Ks. I had to order the 10/100 ethernet card from ebay. back in the days when ebay wasn't so scammy. Hooked it to my local network and it took a couple days to get them to see the network. Unfortunately it was not plug and play. I remember getting like 20 ethernet cards and 11 were borked but it only cost me 10 dollars. put them in a few mor eclassics but they were too slow for anything but the mail server and an irc chat.

    Slowmo on the floppy insertion would have been perfect. Also love that you're recording typing on the keyboard and clicking the mouse. Oh and the sound of the ROM insertion.

    Would have loved seeing my old 4004 based computer being restored back to it's original condition. Beautiful board considering it was approaching it's 50 year mark. It now resides in a museum in Germany.

    You have to rotate the cover for the mouse ball 180 degrees. The sliding foot should be facing the 6 o'clock position of the mouse, instead of 12, like you had.

    I worked on many of these and other early Macs like the Plus, SE, SE30, and the classics. I remember cold solder joints were another failure point in the early Macs. Still have a Classic, SE30 and original and plus Macintoshes with all software and books. Most of my 'collection' still boot up.

    6:20 I'm not sure the right tool to use for this is, but in general I have seen people use desolder guns or a tweezer soldering iron adapter that heats 2 spots at once that would make these caps a lot easier to remove.

    Low melt solder is fine, but paste isn't really. That stuff almost never fully melts with just an iron (meant for hot air). I've restored like 500 or so macs and amigas in my time and I've seen systems fail from the solder paste oozing and shorting stuff out. Normal solder is what you should use, solder one side then the other side. I can't make out what caps you used for the analog board, but hopefully low esr in the power circuit. I do see a panasonic FC cap in the 470/50 position so that's good. :) Also see what looks like a Nichicon PW in the 220/50 near flyback. Only thing is that solder paste, I don't trust it =)

    Amazing video! Maybe should have shown a bit more of the recapping process? Also may I ask what the ultrasonic cleaning is? Btw I just subbed. I’d love to see you get popular.

    • @theserialport
      @theserialport  Рік тому

      Thanks for subscribing, glad to have you along. Ultrasonic cleaning is very effective, and safe with small parts- our ultrasonic cleaner was perfectly sized for this job. It uses high frequency sound to cause cavitation in a cleaning liquid.
      We wanted to show here the restoration in an entertaining, easy to watch video vs a detailed instructional "how to" video. But we also want to create some more videos where we go deep into the procedures such as ultrasonic cleaning and soldering.
