All of us who own one of these old 3 on the tree vehicles really needed that video. Those old 303 transmissions can be daunting. Thanks for giving me the confidence to fool around with the linkage a little bit.
Good video. I would recommend putting a jam nut where the one is missing. It will prevent stressing the adjustment threads as the lever is moved back and forth.
Thanks for the info. My 3 on the tree finds 2nd pretty easy when down shifting, but always wants to go to reverse when up shifting to 2nd. Hopefully this will fix that problem
on my 73 f100 under the hood where shift rods fasten , there's a hole in each arm (the arms w/the plastic bushings that hold the rods) right up next to the tube . you're supposed to lock both arms together by inserting something thru both holes while in the neutral position . a 16 penny nail works , though not perfectly . it seemed to help me to find neutral with the shifter lever , then securely zip tie the shift lever , in neutral position , to the steering wheel before any adjusting . i had to bend one of the rods for clearance too . welded a short 1/4 inch bolt to one jaw of an imitation vise grip , sawed off the other jaw nearly 1/2 inch to make a tool for pressing rods out of bushings at column , so i could safely heat the rod and bend . not a perfect tool , but with a little wrangling , it got the job done . hope this helps someone .
Thanks so much.. it's true it's hard to find a simple video I'm getting a 52 Chevy styleline and owner said hard to find 3rd gear? I'm hoping your video will help
idk what finding centre means but I'm giving it the college try. My issue is I'm just barely pushing the rod far enough with the shifter to get it to engage park. I feel as though if I get it in park, have the shifter in park and just back the rod in or out to give it more throw it should fully engage park. I'm getting tired of chocking my wheels or parking nose downhill incase it slips into reverse.
I’m having a hard time getting it into 1st. Always wants to go into 3rd when taking off, then obviously stalls if iI try to take off in 3rd. It actually got stuck in 3rd and I couldn’t get it out using the column shifter. The shifter and sleeve on the column seems to have gotten loose from fighting to find the gear. It now has quite a bit of play. Any advice for tightening that up? Thanks in advance! Your vid is great! I have a 65 F100pu
Go through what I howed in the video, I think it will help and sounds like all your linkage bushings are wore out and should get replaced. Going to do a 3 speed with overdrive trans swap soon I hope ..
Reverse I can use, but pops out. I can rarely get it into first. After I disconnected the rods swinging the transmission arm, searching for the middle, reverse and first locked up. After getting everything hooked up again, Rev & 1st was still out. Not until I went back under and gave it a yank then it came free. I’m guessing I have bigger issues internally?
Mine did simular, just did this linkage adjustment. Drive it all the time with no issues. Give it a try. Put the trans and the linkage in neutral and adjust till it all lines up like the video.
Yep... the shif linkage is basically the same. Back in the day, GM and Ford did not build all their transmissions. Companies like Borge Warner, Saginaw, etc built them and the manufacturers had to connect them to the shifters with the linkage. So the linkage will differ but the rest is the same
My dad and I used to race stock cars back in the 80s. A freind had a 67 Plymouth Baracuda, and he had my dad drive it ocasionally. It had a slant 6 that was well built. It was Number.... 6 Pack..

Glad it helped
Thank you for making this video! I literally need to adjust my 3 speed and this will help immensely
You are welcome, good luck.

Thanks. Looks like the appropriate fix. So nice when folks share these remedies.
Thankyou so much, it's really hard to find good information on these classics.
You're very welcome!
Simplest explanation I have ever seen. Thank you.
Great explanation, easy to understand, perfect! Thank you!
Your right there was nothing on UA-cam on this. I'm have the same problem on my 1966 f100. Thanks my friend.

Cool idea! Thanks
I think this is the video I've been looking for my issue

Incredibly helpful, thank you!
Great video, thanks for the help.
Thanks for the explanation.
Having this problem with a 63 Mercury M100. Hopefully this helps!
Go all the way forward then all the way back then stop in the middle or neutral with both shift levers.
Yes thanks! I need to try this on my ‘64 F100.
Mine won’t go into third. Hopefully this helps. 😊

thanks. just what I wanted.
Figure this would be a similar job for a '53 Packard linkage? Mine keeps getting stuck in third
Yes.... I have had a couple Studebakers, works the same...
My car was off and my kid pushed shifter knob out of gear without engaging clutch. But it's still stuck in gear. 3 spd Ford. Is it a hard fix?
No.. just do what I did here. Be good to go.
Hell yeah thank you !!!
Is this same application for a 48 Plymouth? Chevy is different
Yes
is this the same process on a 1957 chevrolet 210 3 speed ?

Would you happen to know where I can find those rubber bushings for the shift rods to the transmission linkages?
CJ pony parts has them $10.49.
I was looking at a 1976 dodge pick-up with a 3 speed column linkage issue. Does yours and a Mopar similar in mechanics?
Yep, all work about the same. Is the dodge a slant 6?
@@GlennsSpeedShop yes

@@GlennsSpeedShop thanks for all your great knowledge and videos. Can I email you for more questions?
Shoot me another comment here for now. Working on new email addresses and will publish one for the youtube channel
What do you mean found center on shifting arms?
The center of their throw
