when you put the cover plate on with the two shifters one bigger than the other slip on the gears , the bigger rotates and is off set witch way dose it go? took mine off and am not sure I have it turned right
Philip - thanks so much for this video. I just acquired a 52 Chevy truck with a three speed on the column (fully restored 6 or 7 years ago) and began having an issue today with it popping out of third gear. R, 1, and 2 work fine, but it feels like the shifter doesn't quite go down far enough for 3rd to fully engage. Would you have any insights on what the issue might be? Thanks!
I don’t know what it is but a guess would be the shifter detente need attention. This could be something of a easy fix since you might not have to pull the trans to fix it. Just pull the shifter cover side plate off refurbish it stick it back on and try it you have nothing to lose
First step, try to adjust the column and linkage. If you put in third gear the linkage should be free, having some gap, not rigid.follow the settings in the shop Manual. There are lot of tranys sold as restored but are just repainted. If you have to open it, replace all bearings and seals, give it away to a professional.
Good evening. Thanks for this video and the other showing how to take it apart. Looks like this is an older post though. You make it look very easy. I've never done this before, but last year was My first engine removal and clutch job on my 41 Master Deluxe. i tracked a clicking noise to the front of my tranny, nearest the bell housing. Hear it constantly n 1st and ever so slight when I start into 2nd. Two months ago the tranny started popping outta 3rd into neutral. Then the clicking a few weeks ago. A few older friends are telling me maybe the syncro and another just told me there are bearings in the tranny, which I didn't know. Your thoughts? Also in your video video you mention about replacing parts. Where do you purchase these parts? Any help would be truly appreciated....
Sorry for late response, no idea what the clicking could be. There are bearing overhauling kits on ebay. Cost around 120$ The sincro rings are not available as far as I know Good luck
I saw a reference manual on the table, can you tell me the name of it or the ISBN number? I'd like to buy one or borrow one from the library. Cool video. Thanks much.
I have a 59 Chevy, for this car you need the 58 and the 59-60 shop manual. You can buy it from several part reseller just search for "chevy 59-60 shop manual" and "chevy 58 shop manual"
All I can say is do not use this three speed "saggy" in a '67-'72 Chevy /GMC 4 x4. I made the mistake of dropping in my 454 first just to see how it would run and I never made it back home from the test drive !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I picked pieces of that three speed out of my ass-hole for a month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it in a 6 banger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely the best video on transmission assembly, and the man never said a word, nice job

Hi, good job. One question. Where did you bought this rebuild kit?
I think I got it on ebay, but not sure, I did it some years ago now
Nice video! What sealant was used in this video? What is it called and where can I purchase it. Is it like RTV? Or Silicon?
Great video! What kind of fluid did you use?
I use a standard 80W90 transmission gear oil
Thanks for the video. Can you mention the oil grade and spec use by this transmission?
I use 80W90 from liquimoly, if this is the best choice I do not know

Hi mate excellent video. Do you know if these gearboxes are the same between V8 and 235 6 cylinder?
I'm think they had the same on the 283cui, but not sure, the bigger engines had only automatic.
